Ich schreibees stellvertretend für alle Olympiateilnehmerinnen und -teilnehmerin Sotschi. Für sie bedeuten diese 22. Olympischen Winterspieledie Chance, sich einen sportlichen Lebenstraum zu verwirklichen!Der Sport, seine Werte und die Begeisterung: Das ist das wirklichWesentliche bei Olympia. Und jetzt, wo es endlich so weit ist, sollauch nur dieses Wesentliche im Fokus sein.„Sport hat die Kraft, die Welt zu verändern.“ Dieser berühmte Satzvon Nelson Mandela hat zeitlose Aktualität. Toleranz, Fairness,Res pekt und Wertschätzung: Sport ist eine Metapher auch für diesemenschlichen Grundwerte. Es ist über diese Begriffe viel geredetund geschrieben worden vor diesen Olympischen Spielen – begreifbarwerden sie allerdings erst, wenn sie auch (vor)gelebt werden.Athletinnen und Athleten in ihrer Begeisterung tun das! Indem sieihren Weg zu Olympischen Spielen als tägliche Herausforderungannehmen. Indem sie mit Hingabe tun, was sie irgendwann alsKinder aus purer Freude an der Bewegung begonnen haben. Undindem so viele andere Teil ihrer Mission werden können, wenn dergroße Moment der Medaillenentscheidungen gekommen ist. FürMilliarden von Menschen sind die Lebensträume der Olympiasportlereine so magische Faszination, weil sich darin auch ihre eigenenTräume widerspiegeln und der Wunsch, diese zu verwirklichen. Dasist die gute Kraft des Sports.Die Olympischen Spiele in Sotschi sind seit Lillehammer 1994 meineersten Spiele, die ich von daheim aus mitverfolge. Ob wir alsSportler, Betreuer oder Sportbegeisterte dabei sind – Hauptsachemit ganzem Herzen! The sport, its valuesand the enthusiasm: this is the essence of the Olympic Games.And now that it is finally the time for them, the essence shouldbe focused on.“Sport has the power to change the world.” This famous quote byNelson Mandela has timeless relevance. Tolerance, fairness, respectand appreciation: sport is a metaphor for these fundamentalhuman values. Prior to these Olympic Games these ideas havebeen talked and written about – but they become understandableonce they are also lived and demonstrated.Athletes with their enthusiasm do that! By taking on their way tothe Olympic Games as a daily challenge. By devoting themselvesto something that they have started as young children out of purejoy for the movement. And by allowing so many other people tobecome part of their mission until the big moment of the medaldecisions has come. For billions of people the lifetime dreams ofOlympic athletes have magical fascination as they also reflect thespectators’ own dreams and the desire to make them come true –this is the great power of sport.The Olympic Games in Sochi are the first Games since Lillehammer1994 that I will watch from home. No matter if we are part ofthese events as an athlete, a coach or a sports enthusiast – it’smost important that we are involved with all of our heart!
