to show a more pronounced alcoholic component than have other recent bottles and although it is 

not the best bottle I have ever had, it still offered a great drinking experience. The 1978 Monfortino 

is a pure joy to drink today, and like the Monprivato, its aging potential appears to be virtually

Wine Advocate 171, Jun 2007: 'This wine is the result of a Symington Family partnership with 

Joao van Zeller. Because of this historic Quinta with roots going back to the 18th century, 

Tempranillo is known as Tinta Roriz in the Douro. This estate often presents some of the best 

values in the Douro, serious wines for modest money. The 2003 Reserva is a blend of Touriga 

Nacional (55%), Touriga Franca (30%) and Tinta Roriz (15%) raised for 12 months in new French 

oak. This wine is an excellent value, showing sweet, flavorful young fruit, as well as soft, velvety 

edges. It has some brightness as well. It is elegant in the mid-palate, but expands with air. It does 

not seem to project the pure power that the 2002 version of this wine did, but I liked its balance 

better. Despite its soft initial presentation, an hour of air brings out the tannins and a backbone, 

and at three hours it shows fine integration of its components and increasingly flavorful fruit. It 

should repay some cellaring. Drink now-2014.' Bewertung: 91 / 100 Punkte Wine

Bordeaux Total: 'Extrem dunkles Purpur mit lila und violetten Reflexen. Viel Lakritze, Trüffel, 

Maulbeeren und Brombeeren in der Nase, zeigt eine gewaltige Tiefe in Form von Rauchnoten und 

schwarzen Edelhölzern. Im Gaumen kompakt, fleischig aber gleichzeitig mit relativ feinen 

Tanninen, wie man es bei einem jungen Trotanoy noch selten erlebt hat, Power und Finesse und 

eine Sonderklasse die dem 1998er sehr ähnlich sind, oder soll man so weit greifen, dass an hier 

irgendwann auch eine Affinität zum legendären 61er finden wird? Wer klassische Pomerols liebt, 

kommt an diesem Wein heuer nicht vorbei… (19/20). Im Herbst 2010 nochmals verkostet. Die 

Idee, dass aus diesem Wein einmal vielleicht ein Nachfolger vom 1961er Trotanoy wird, ist gar 

nicht so schlecht. Noch nie habe ich einen Trotanoy so schwarzbeerig und rauchig erlebt. Weil ich 

mir jetzt sicher bind, erlaube ich mir jetzt schon die Maximalmnote zu geben.' 20/20

R. Parker: 'The blockbuster 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes (16.3% alcohol) is a blend 

of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah that usually emanates from the three old-vine parcels they own - 

La Crau, Gallimardes, and Esquirons. The fruit from the latter vineyard, which usually goes into 

the Vieilles Vignes as it did in 2004, did not make it in 2003. This wine is built from the back 

forward, meaning there is huge tannin and structure, so at first the wine seems somewhat 

backward, but with air, the extraordinary perfume of lilacs, sweet licorice, blackberry liqueur, and 

kirsch soar from the glass. There are even hints of roasted meats, smoked herbs, and underbrush 

as well as truffles. The wine has superb concentration, remarkable intensity, full-bodied flavors, 

sweetness, opulence, and a multi-layered palate and finish that literally have to be tasted to be 

believed. This wine spent 100% of its time in tank and is a modern-day monument to Chateauneuf 

du Pape, and the glories of the old vines of this appellation. I would give this wine another 1-2 

years of bottle age and drink it over the following two decades. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it 

merit a perfect score in a few years - it’s that special.' 99/100
