nach Kirschen und Kaffee duftendes Bouquet, reif und warm. Kräftiger und doch feiner Gaumen, 

ein Power-Wein, der einerseits auf Finesse setzt, andererseits aber auch einen eher körnigen 

Fluss aufweist (17/20). 03: Mitteldunkles Weinrot, erster Reifeschimmer. Schlankes, aber sehr 

aromatisches Bouquet, bereits Reife zeigend, Bakelitspuren, legt zu an der Luft. Im Gaumen 

faulige Noten, nasse Baumrinde, grüne Noten. Entweder keine ideale Flasche oder der Wein trägt 

ein permanentes, nicht korrigierbares Problem in sich. Momentan lasse ich noch die bessere

Parker: 'This is an interesting as well as great vintage for Latour. As indicated in my barrel tasting 

report, Latour's 1994 possesses an atypically high percentage of Merlot (27%) in the final blend. 

Because of this, the wine appears to have a sweeter, more fleshy texture than is typical for a 

young Latour, but do not make the mistake of thinking this will be a commercially-styled, easy to 

drink wine. It exhibits an opaque dark ruby/purple color, and a backward, intense textbook nose of 

walnut and cassis scents complemented by smoky pain grille notes that build in the glass. This 

full-bodied, powerful, layered Latour reveals high tannin, but no bitterness or astringency. The 

superb purity, fabulous precision, and remarkable length should ensure 35-40 years of longevity. 

Readers will find more fat, flesh, and glycerin than usual for a young Latour (save for such great 

vintages as 1982 and 1990), but don't be deceived, this wine requires 8-10 years of cellaring.

Edelhölzer. Im Gaumen samtig fliessend, von fast unheimlichem Charme, Beerenaromatik in 

Hülle und Fülle. Der beste Lynch-Moussas, der in den letzten zwanzig Jahren je produziert wurde. 

Viel Pauillac – für sehr wenig Geld! 02: Dunkles, sattes Weinrot, Wuchtiges, intensives Bouquet, 

burgundische, rotbeerige Konturen, die Frucht tendiert leicht zur Überreife, was dem Nasenbild 

noch mehr Kraft verleiht. Süsser, von Vanille begleiteter Gaumen, zeigt eine gewisse Opulenz und 

ersten Schmelz in den satten Tanninen, Dörrfrüchte im Finale, jetzt am Anfang einer etwa

mit sanft ziegelrotem Schimmer darin. Würziges, rauchiges Bouquet; nasse Baumnussschalen, 

Malz und sogar ein frischer Hauch Zitronenthymian. Der Körperbau ist leicht bis mittelgewichtig, 

weswegen die grobkörnige, fast markante Struktur bäuerlich zum Vorschein kommt. Ein Wein, 

den wohl viele zuerst unterschätzt hatten. Wird sich noch sehr lange halten können und schmeckt 

noch besser, wenn man ihn zwei Stunden dekantiert und dann bei 16 Grad geniesst, denn dann

Joao van Zeller. Because of this historic Quinta with roots going back to the 18th century, 

Tempranillo is known as Tinta Roriz in the Douro. This estate often presents some of the best 

values in the Douro, serious wines for modest money. The 2003 Reserva is a blend of Touriga 

Nacional (55%), Touriga Franca (30%) and Tinta Roriz (15%) raised for 12 months in new French 

oak. This wine is an excellent value, showing sweet, flavorful young fruit, as well as soft, velvety 

edges. It has some brightness as well. It is elegant in the mid-palate, but expands with air. It does 

not seem to project the pure power that the 2002 version of this wine did, but I liked its balance 

better. Despite its soft initial presentation, an hour of air brings out the tannins and a backbone, 

and at three hours it shows fine integration of its components and increasingly flavorful fruit. It
