Latest generation of a true original
Noble Blue has written history already. This contemporary
re-interpretation of the famous Meissen Onion
pattern taps more than 270 years of tradition;
that of the most successful blue-and-white pattern
in the entire history of porcelain. The opulence of the
original design now makes way for finely textured
breeziness: classic decorative devices in gleaming
cobalt blue and a strong red appear in a re-arranged
form, whilst astutely placed gilt highlights create
points of inspiringly elegant focus. The upshot is a
modern yet heritage-rich 27-piece tableware service
for life’s truly enjoyable moments.
With its rich variety of individual constituents, the
pattern lends itself to bespoke, uncluttered combinations
which suit any dining or banqueting table.
Each saucer goes perfectly with any of three different
cups. All items in the Noble Blue pattern are
dishwasher-safe and stackable to boot. Thus, this
latest generation of a MEISSEN ® original is an ideal

Zeitgeist und Tradition
Das traditionsreiche opulente Dekor diente
als Vorlage für den neuen Designklassiker.
The heritage-rich pattern served as opulent
source material for the new design classic.
Unmittelbar nach der Erfindung des ersten europäischen
Porzellans und der Gründung der Manufaktur
im Jahr 1710 begann die Suche nach einem ganz
besonderen Blau. Es sollte das Weiß des Porzellans
hervorheben und gleichzeitig mit ihm harmonieren.
Sachsens Kurfürst August der Starke setzte für seine
Entdeckung die damals hohe Belohnung von 1 000
Talern aus. Die Verbindung der Elemente Kobalt und
Sauerstoff erwies sich in langen Versuchsreihen als
optimal geeignet, speziell für Porzellan mit seinen
hohen Brenntemperaturen. Damit war es ab 1722
auch möglich, das Markenzeichen, die Gekreuzten
Schwerter, geschützt in Kobaltblau unter der Glasur
aufzutragen.
Inspiriert von den damals vor allem blau gestalteten
ostasiatischen Dekoren, entstand 1739 in strahlendem
Blau das später weltberühmte Meissener
Zwiebelmuster. Tatsächlich stellt es keine Zwiebeln
dar, sondern zeigt in Anlehnung an das ostasiatische
Vorbild Granatapfel, Pfirsich, Bambusstock
sowie die zarten Blüten von Lotosblume und
Chrysantheme. Schnell fand das Dekor zahlreiche
Nachahmer. Deshalb sind die Gekreuzten Schwerter
im Fuß des Bambusstammes seit 1888 Kennzeichen
für das Meissener Original – aus der ersten
Porzellan-Manufaktur Europas. Noble Blue trägt
selbstverständlich traditionsgemäß die Gekreuzten
Schwerter im Bambusstamm.
Modern with tradition
Immediately after the first European porcelain was
invented and the Manufactory established in 1710,
the search for a quite special blue began. The right
colour would emphasize the white of the porcelain
whilst nevertheless harmonising with it. Saxony’s
Prince Elector Augustus the Strong offered a reward
of 1,000 thalers, a huge sum of money in those days,
for its creation. Many long series of experiments
eventually revealed cobalt and oxygen to be the ideal
combination of elements on account of the high
firing temperatures required for porcelain. As of 1722,
therefore, it was possible to apply the trademark
MEISSEN ® Crossed Swords in cobalt blue beneath
the glaze, protecting them.
MEISSEN ® ’s gleaming Blue Onion pattern, conceived
in 1739 and destined to become world-famous,
was inspired by East Asian schemes, then produced
primarily in blue. Rather than depicting onions, however,
it in fact adheres to oriental prototypes in showing
pomegranates, peaches, bamboo stems and
delicate blooms of lotus and chrysanthemum. The
pattern was soon being imitated by all and sundry.
As a result, since 1888 the Crossed Swords mark has
been replicated in the stem of the bamboo to prove
the piece is an original from the Meissen Manufactory
– Europe's first porcelain manufactory. It goes
without saying that Noble Blue follows tradition by
retaining the Crossed Swords in the bamboo stem.

KUNSTVOLLES
Handwerk
Einzigartig, wertvoll und mit Liebe zum Detail: Das
ist MEISSEN ® s Tradition und Verpflichtung zugleich.
Auch jedes einzelne Teil des Dekors Noble Blue entsteht
mit dem Anspruch höchster Perfektion, Exklusivität
und Qualität. Zur Anwendung kommen
dabei zwei spezielle Techniken der Porzellanmalerei:
Zunächst wird die eigens in der Meissener Manufaktur
hergestellte berühmte kobaltblaue Farbe noch
vor dem zweiten Brand in der Unterglasurmalerei
von Hand mit feinen Pinselstrichen auf das unglasierte
Porzellan aufgetragen. Diese Maltechnik beherrscht
MEISSEN ® als eine der wenigen Manufakturen
weltweit und setzt sie auch heute noch ein.
Die Farbe dringt dabei schnell und tief in die noch
porösen Scherben ein, erscheint jedoch zunächst
grau und matt. Erst nach dem Glasieren und dem
darauffolgenden Glasurbrand bei 1 450 Grad Celsius
erstrahlt das Dekor in magischem Kobaltblau. Dann
wird das kostbare Porzellan Stück für Stück von
Hand mit Rot und Gold veredelt. Dabei kommen
spezielle Inglasurfarben zum Einsatz, die mit Pinsel
bzw. Stahlfeder aufgebracht werden. Beim erneuten
Dekorbrand sinken diese Farben leicht in die Glasur
ein und werden so durch diese geschützt. Damit die
Golddekoration ihre volle Strahlkraft entwickelt, wird
sie abschließend von Hand poliert.
Von Hand werden Akzente in
Rot und Gold aufgemalt.

Consummate craftsmanship
Unique, precious and lovingly detailed – properties
that, for MEISSEN ® , are at once a tradition and a
commitment. Every single piece decorated in Noble
Blue aspires to the same heights of perfection, exclusivity
and quality as ever. Two special techniques of
porcelain painting are used to this end. First, the
famous cobalt-blue paint made in-house at the
Meissen Manufactory is finely brushed by hand onto
the unglazed porcelain prior to the second firing.
MEISSEN ® is one of the few potteries in the world
capable of applying this underglaze painting technique
and still employs it today. The paint is rapidly
absorbed by the still porous body and is initially dull
grey in appearance. The decorative detail only shines
forth in gorgeous cobalt blue once the piece has been
glazed and has subsequently undergone glost firing
at 1,450 degrees Centigrade. Each high-grade porcelain
item is then enhanced by hand in red and gilt.
Special-purpose inglaze paints are used here that
are either brushed on or applied with a steel pen.
These paints sink into the glaze slightly during the
ensuing decoration firing and gain a degree of protection
as a result. The full radiance of the gilded
decoration is achieved by subsequently polishing it
by hand.
