1 st stage Hagen a.T.W.
A man who set out to conquer
the international show jumping world...
Italian rider Emanuele Gaudiano’s
season got off to a good start. He
won an international class at Horses
& Dreams meets Austria and enjoys talking about
why the DKB-Riders Tour 2017 is important to him.
Now aged 33, Emanuel never dreamed that he
would one day be at the top of his game as the rider
with the most points as the new DKB-Riders Tour
season kicks off. Everything’s fit into place perfectly
for him.
Things also generally fit into place perfectly at Francois
and Ulli Kasselmann’s spectacular festival of
equestrian sports, Horses & Dreams, at the Kasselmann
estate in Hagen: the show atmosphere, the
Emanuele Gaudiano (ITA) & Caspar
exhibition, the decorations, the music and all the
other host country details. The host country in 2017
was Austria and the attractions that captivated the
thousands of visitors included majestic Lippizaners,
beautiful Haflingers and Austrian singer Andreas
Gabalier yodelling his hit “Hulapalu”. The Kasselmanns
either do something right or they don’t do
it at all. Guests, riders, exhibitors and reporters at
Horses & Dreams all know that.
Austria makes an impact
Riders representing the host country pulled out all
the stops. Christian Rhomberg, only 26 years old,
came second in the DKB-Riders Tour points class, a
great result and a fantastic sporting achievement
for the host country. Emanuele Gaudiano knows
what a great quality show this is and he’s familiar
with the unique Kasselmann signature. Born in
Matera, he’s been living in Germany since 2005 because
it’s easier to travel to major European events
from here, and because he likes to be close to the
good German shows, trainers and horses.
Schockemöhle, Managing Director of Riders Tour
GmbH. It must be a lot of fun to be either the
breeder or the owner of a winning horse on a regular
basis. Emanuele Gaudiano, the leading Italian
rider who competes in his police officer’s uniform,
feels at home in Germany. It’s the place where he
met his wife Henrike, and where his kids Lisa and
Elia are growing up.
Gaudiano pulled off his win against one of the
fastest riders in Europe, speed demon Gert-Jan
Bruggink from the Netherlands. When Gert-Jan
won the DKB-Riders Tour qualifying class on the
previous day, he mentioned that a Dutch rider had
never been overall winner of this international
show jumping series. “Time to change that,” he said,
without really having a plan.
Gaudiano, on the other hand, does have a plan. The
DKB-Riders Tour 2017 is perfect for him, with the
single exception that he wasn’t able to compete in
the German Jumping Derby because it clashed with
the Italian Nations Cup in Rome. “I love riding in
the Derby,” he said enthusiastically. “To win it is a
great achievement.” He’s postponed that goal until
2018 and is focusing on getting a good result in the
DKB-Riders Tour this year. It certainly started off
pretty well…
Italy meets Caspar
Maybe if he hadn’t come to Germany, Gaudiano
would never have met Caspar, the horse that helped
him to win the Deutsche Kreditbank AG’s Grand Prix
and the Riders Tour points class. Caspar is an
eleven-year-old OS sport horse by Holstein stallion
Berlin out of a Pardarco II dam. His proud breeder
sat in on the press conference because he’s Paul
You’ve scored your first points but you had to miss the Derby. Will you be riding
in Wiesbaden?
Gaudiano: “I’m not totally sure, but I’m 90 percent sure. I always have to check
with the national trainer and what he says goes for the entire season. But I’ve
noted the tour dates on the calendar.”
What do you love about your top horse Caspar?
Gaudiano: “He’s got a great character and masses of scope. He isn’t always the fastest
horse over a course because he loses a bit of time over jumps, but he always tries his
heart out. Breeder Paul is quite rightly proud.”
The first stage of the DKB-Riders Tour is Hagen. Is this series going to feature in
your season schedule?
Gaudiano: “Yes, definitely. The Global Champions Tour has changed its rules so I can’t
take part now. The Riders Tour hasn’t and I’m glad because it means I can compete
in it. I’m definitely going to do everything I can to stay out front with the leaders.”
