Traditionally, jazz is of major interest in the city, but
so is pop music – mainly due to the Popakademie, in
which young musicians and creative artists experience
a profound education. Newcomers like Max Giesinger
contribute to the lively and independent Mannheim’s
creative scene and make it known far beyond the
borders of Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. Major
movie theaters, such as Cineplex and Cinemaxx,
do not only bring blockbusters to the screen, but also
productions of leading opera houses and theatres of
the world. Besides, smaller movie theaters like Atlantis
and Odeon present non-mainstream movies. The museum
landscape is something else to be proud of: The
technoseum delights with exhibitions about technical,
economic and social change; the Reiss Engelhorn Museums
display their impressive collections and muchnoticed
special exhibitions. Moreover, the visual arts
will receive even more space in June 2018: This is when
Kunsthalle opens up their spectacular new building.
This light-flooded architectural work will create new
perspectives on considerable collections with works of
Èdouard Manet, Francis Bacon, William Kentridge or
Anselm Kiefer, and the excellent sculpture collections.
