PREFACE
Margitta Buchert
Various facets of the genesis, transformation and interaction of design and research are
presented in this book REFLEXIVE DESIGN PROCESSES. Perspectives that have already
been accorded importance in ‘classical’ design-related research and furthermore constitute
a recurring topic in current discourses and in practice are highlighted innovatively
and previous discussions are extended productively. What type of processes and
process characteristics can be differentiated against the background of various bodies
of knowledge that cannot be fully grasped and different influences? How do creative
processes and systemization work affect each other? Which design-related and which
knowledge-generating possibilities of action come to the fore? How are specific forms
of knowledge and their interactions generated, evaluated and transformed? The book
presents a wide spectrum of approaches, descriptions and explorations of different types
of processes and process characteristics within the dynamics of design and research. It
shows what cognitive, structural and esthetic potential the thematization of processes
holds and how this can be understood exemplarily and communicated in terms of the
relevance of high-quality design of the human living environment.
The publication preceeded the 8th International DARA Symposium on Design and
CONCEIVING PROCESSES
Margitta Buchert
14
It is by all means customary to view designing, planning and research as a process,
like any action. These actions comprise the intention, purpose, idea, initial decisions
and concepts, consolidation, specification, recursive loops and realization, forming an
almost banal fact and an inherent aspect. The associated connotations of the notion
of ‘process’ or ‘processual’ comprise words such as procedure, development, progress,
duration, becoming, transformation – all terms that incorporate time and change in
a qualitative and active sense. This opens up sheer endless potential for questions
about processes and process characteristics in connection with reflexive design. Even
if insights on this subject can neither be reduced to individual schemata nor be fully
grasped linguistically, there are more general superordinate aspects that allow approximations.
These are the subject of focus on here within an outlined framework. The
intention is to show with which reference points the focusing on processes can reveal
a variety of ways of thinking as impulses, in order to present and stimulate innovative
research methods from the field of design. The resulting bodies of knowledge are outlined
not least to spur on the further research-related qualification and viable future
spatial-physical design actions in the human living environment.
PROZESSE DENKEN
Margitta Buchert
seinen historischen Schichten.
5 | Qin Yufen: Untitled, 2018
Especially the title of the park as a ‘Garden of Memories’, very close to the new synagog
of Duisburg, indicates that the idea very evidently drew on what already existed. Even if
this work by Dani Karavan appears too loaded and too obvious linguistically, it impresses
with its design presence in this location. It is an impressive example of what potential the
location and the task harbor for the generation of ideas. One must tap into this source.
A NEW VIEW OF THE FAMILIAR Designing architecture is often
understood as a search for new forms. This makes sense but is often misleading. The
new form emerges at the end of a process and not at the beginning. Furthermore, the
new – which can be closely associated with a moment of surprise – is gained from the
turning around of accustomed and familiar perspectives. The new gains its meaning by
setting itself in relation to the familiar and placing it in a new context. It can lead to
new qualities, to contradicting the generally expected, to countering conventional with
a deeper understanding of the respective situations, as well as to triggering new sensory
stimuli. What may appear very odd or even far-fetched can evoke new perspectives for
the design, as well as a new attitude towards life.
The artist Qin Yufen pursues this with a wide range of approaches (fig. 5-6). 9 It surrounds
the themes of her artistic work. Her preferred medium is mostly large-scale
spatial installations with familiar, often simple everyday daily items. These include
clothes horses, barbed wire, bamboo, fabrics.
50
The work I am alluding to here has been shown in various surroundings, giving the installation
a constantly changing spatial impression. The respective space is densely filled
in an unorderly manner with identical unfolded white clothes horses, which are available
cheaply from hardware stores. White and slightly transparent cloths of the same size

A given set of tools and routines are associated with the hope that the earlier proven
success of an approach can also be applied to the assignment at hand. Familiar routines,
such as the creation of analysis sketches and work models, are often used as an
introductory approach to a new task. In later design phases, digital or analog detailed
models enable the examination of spatial disposition, material use and connections. When
applying routines, however, it is also possible to overlook problems and opportunities.
Abraham Maslow provides a reminder that proven tools are also often used when other
work methods would be more suitable. 16
OPTIONS AND REPERTOIRE Over the course of the design process,
the designer can make use of the aforementioned methods. Depending on experience,
repertoire and budget, they can be combined or used sequentially. At the beginning of
the examination, various approaches are developed and pursued in parallel. Horst Rittel
suggests the creation and variation of options. 17 For Rheinberger, the repetition and
modification of routines is an important method of gaining knowledge. 18 According to
Ahrens, the experimenter must attempt to “maintain a ‘sphere of vagueness’ [...] that
on the one hand prevents pure frenzy and on the other hand does not drift into being
machine-like.” 19 For certain periods of time it remains unclear “which signals should be
strengthened and which should be weakened.” 20
66
The working method described here is understood by Rheinberger as ‘researching design’. It
does not distinguish between scientific and artistic practices. “The thoughts of inventors
and scientists are directed, like artists, not towards the knowledge of the existing, instead
their notions concentrate on future possibilities.” 21 In the experiment, it is possible that
“commonly used tools [...] take on new functions” and that “unanticipated events” occur. 22
Experimental setups therefore allow the creation of knowledge. Depending on the means
used, involving teams enables an additional probing of options or more in-depth approaches
to solutions. However, if these co-designers are not attuned to each other or are on
different wavelengths, this process can also be very unproductive and fruitless.

genutzt.
mations. The Fyber Space Project wanted to create a tension between the two different
realms, looking for cross-fertilisation. Was it not the novel lens of the diagram,
that enabled Colin Rowe to compare Palladio and Le Corbusier, putting both of them
in an entire new and clarifying light? 14 Encouraged by Kipnis’ text ‘The Cunning of
Cosmetics’, a reading of the work of H&dM which receives its sharpness through the
questions he raises as an apostle of ‘the digital side’, I tried to elope from the digital
camp to the tectonic. 15 Working for Zaha Hadid in London and later Christian Kieckens
in Brussels informed and fed my research.
But it was not until my own practice ‘Voet en De Brabandere’ was founded in 2012 that I
felt free to fully explore these two worlds in a productive dialog, taking on board elements
that reinforced one hybrid design process. As such, the scenography for the exhibition
of the Henry Van de Velde Label (2014) grew from a spaceframe and a knot (fig. 4-9).
The overall pattern was an offset of the Lokettenzaal of the Flemish Parliament, a structure
designed by the modernist architect Victor Bourgeois. We deformed it into a smaller
maze, bringing in the human scale and frames for objects. The central point of control
was utterly structural and repetitive: the inverted column, as an homage to Mies van der
Rohe, and its connection to the beam structure. Depending on the size of the objects and
the exhibition scenario, structural elements were eliminated, resulting in an environment
that intensified the relation between the viewer and the object.
86
THE OTHER LENS TOWARDS HABITABILITY Within the work
of Voet en De Brabandere, the ontological was equally the means to infuse the human
aspect within the generic approach of pattern structures. Beyond the literary and formal
approach of digital or parametric design, the complexity of field conditions induced a
layered architectural discourse as language and as technique that did not aim for a total
rupture with history and the reinvention of the new. It sought fundaments and ontologies,
not as dogmas, but as engaging with an ongoing process where discontinuities,
6 | Knoten | Knot 7 | Knoten-Prototyp | Knot prototype
14 Ermutigt von Kipnis’ Text ‚The Cunning of Cosmetics‘, einer
SPATIAL SURVEY AND SPATIAL IMAGE
Andreas Nütten
The new spatial dimensions of the ‘European metropolitan region’ comprise wider
polycentric areas that are neither clearly city nor clearly countryside. Commuter
connections and various forms of interlinking define the expanse of these areas and
everyday realities correspond to these dimensions. In many cases, however, these primarily
functional spatial units are lacking an overarching new spatial understanding, an
‘image’ that generates a sense of belonging, identification and identity. However, this
is important in order to grasp a wider cultural space with distinctive properties. It can
stimulate involvement, initiative and empathetic bonds internally and make distinctive
existing and new qualities visible outwardly. This requires new interpretations and
new notions of the area. Image-based methods of surveying and presenting urban
regions from the perspective of landscape are suggested in the following. With their
systemizing aspects, the methods research and generate knowledge and furthermore,
as phenomenological bases and starting points, can form significant creative platforms
for more context-related spatial designing and planning.
142
LANDSCAPE PERSPECTIVE ON CITY The hypothesis here is: landscape
is the future support structure of the urban region! In a task-dividing fusion of city and
countryside, significant qualities and (new) tasks are to be expected in the countryside. A
new dynamic will result from the interplay of global influences and local conditions, from

LANDSCHAFTSPERSPEKTIVE AUF STADT Die Hypothese lautet
in the present. Subverting the binary opposition of erecting architecture and causing it to
disappear, research can interrogate discrepancies between what seems to be demanded by
the different processes involved to open up new territories where design may intervene.
One of the recurring dreams in the theories and practices of architecture is to spatialize
the paradoxical interweaving between processes of identity creation and destruction. In
some cases this intention is developed by explicitly expressing the subtractive dimension,
such as in Diller and Scofidio’s concretisation of synaptic laps in the re-enactment of
‘The Memory Theater of Giulio Camillo’, where the consequences of forgetting take the
form of a suspension bridge made out of two discrete structural units that cantilever
Memory Theatre of Giulio Camillo“.
In diesem verwandeln
PARTICIPATION Artistic-participative practices are not politically legitimized
and cannot or do not necessarily want to integrate the wider population, achieve a consensus
or mediate, as ideally envisaged in participation procedures accompanying urban
planning proceedings. However, due to their often low-threshold participation access,
including through e.g. non-verbal and non-frontal organized formats, they generate alternative
content that is not bound to predetermined issues. Owing to their dynamic, they
can pool those involved quite differently from urban planning practice, as well as activate
new involved parties and population groups. They also contribute to specifying target
TIME The understanding and presence of different time schedules influence processes
in a very central manner – from the programming to communication and work on parallel
interlinked result strands. In particular, time is evaluated and processed differently in
various disciplines. For the theater, for example, a two-year project duration enables
the extension and adjustment of the otherwise customary focus on the premiere and
the run-up of just a few weeks by means of the applied principles of ‘researching’ and
‘testing’. However, in order to be truly effective, this transition must occur on a strategic,
artistic, but especially also institutional level. In city planning with a focus on sustainability
and continuation, but also due to the often complex contexts and constellations
of those involved, two years is most of the time just the first phase in which a project
structure, networks, formats etc. are established, before embarking on the actual project
and implementation stage. If this phase ends without reaching any further agreements,
