Dr. Shawn SandersSusan MarquezWhen Shawn Sanders was in high school atJackson Prep, he knew that he wanted to majorin engineering, and he knew he wanted to go toMississippi State. What he didn’t know is that oneday he would be not only saving people’s livesbut giving people a better quality of life in his roleas an interventional cardiologist at Baptist Heartin Jackson. Sanders has been at Baptist Heart forfour years, where a wide range of services, technology,and expertise is offered to keep heartsand blood vessels healthy.Sanders was an excellent student at JacksonPrep, which led to him being a PresidentialEndowed Scholar at MSU. “I was undecided inwhat type of engineering I wanted to do,” saysSanders. “I liked science and math, so I wasn’tsure which direction to go. While I was still at Prep,I got a call from MSU saying I needed to choosewhich field of engineering I wanted to study.The guy told me that not many people were inbiological engineering, so it would be easier toget into classes. I decided to choose that.”While at MSU, Sanders discovered that hereally liked biological engineering. “MississippiState had a good track record for students inbiological engineering being accepted into medicalschool. So I took the MCAT (medical collegeadmission test) and passed. One thing led toanother and I was accepted into the University ofMississippi Medical Center.”Early on, Sanders shadowed family friendDr. Mike McMullan, a cardiologist who was workingat UMMC. “Mike went to church with our familyand was a friend of my parents. While shadowinghim, I learned that a lot of cardiology is physiology,and there is a lot of engineering involved; afterall, the heart is the body’s pump. That was myfirst experience in medicine, and I was fascinated.”As he went through medical school, Sanderscouldn’t help comparing every experience withthe ones he had in cardiology. “Nothing evercompared to that. In my third and fourth years inmed school, I chose internal medicine residencywith the goal of doing a cardiac fellowship.” That’sexactly what he did, and during his cardiologyfellowship, he served as chief fellow. He wasnamed UMMC’s Cardiology Fellow of the Year in2013. Currently, Sanders is finishing a fellowshipin interventional cardiology with particular interestsin the endovascular treatment of peripheralarterial disease as well as transcatheter aorticvalve replacement.As a cardiologist at Baptist Heart in Jackson,Sanders has the opportunity to see people attheir lowest point and later seeing them thrive.“The most rewarding part of my job is watchingpatients get better,” says Sanders. “With interventionalcardiology, I get immediate gratification.People come into the hospital very sick, but wecan do things that can make a patient get bettervery quickly. That’s a great feeling.”Sanders met his wife, Sara, while they wereboth students at UMMC where she currentlypractices internal medicine and geriatrics. Thecouple lives in Ridgeland with their two children,Charlotte (7) and Wilson (5). The family enjoystravel and going to the beach. “We also lovegoing to restaurants. We have friends in NewOrleans and love visiting with them and tryingnew restaurants.” Sanders says he also lovesmusic and art.One thing that Sanders is particularly proudof is that Dr. Mike McMullan texted him a fewyears ago to ask if his son, Matthew, couldshadow Sanders. “He did, and now Matthew’sin medical school. I feel like we have come fullcircle, and I’m real happy about that.” lHometown MADISON • 15
