Gartenreise
zur Hortensienblüte in der Normandie.
Hochachtung, Schönheit und Bewunderung
versinnbildlichen durch die Jahrhunderte
den ebenfalls einzigartigen „Charme“ von
Hortensien!
Bereits Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts trat die
Hortensie ihre Reise aus Asien nach Europa
an. Ihr Name stammt von dem im Burgund
geborenen Pflanzenkundler Philibert Commerson
(1727-1773). Es heißt, dass er die Blume
nach einer Dame benannte – Hortense
de Nassau – der Tochter des Prinzen von
Nassau, zu der er eine herzliche Beziehung
pflegte. Er entdeckte diese Pflanze als er
auf der königlichen Fleute „L’Étoile“ 1767
unter dem Kommando von Louis Antoine
de Bougainville die Welt umsegelte.
Das „mauve légère“, der aus dem französischen
Angers stammenden Hortensiensorte
'Cousine Louise' – Titelmotiv –

"Understanding the beautiful and enthusiasm
for the beautiful are one."
– Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach (1830-1916), Austrian writer –
"Concert apéritif du Piano" presents this
"beauty" in a unique and unforgettable solo
recital by Philipp Scheucher on the Tours
fabuleux! Garden Tour to Normandy during
the hydrangeas‘ blooming season.
Over the centuries, respect, beauty and admiration
have epitomized the truly unique
"charm" of the hydrangeas!
The hydrangea began its journey from Asia
to Europe at the end of the 18th century.
The botanist Philibert Commerson (1727-
1773), born in Burgundy, is said to have
named the flower after a lady, Hortense
de Nassau, the daughter of the Prince of
Nassau, with whom he had an affectionate
relationship. He discovered this plant while
circumnavigating the world on the royal
fluyt "L’Etoile" in 1767, under the command
of Louis Antoine de Bougainville.
The "mauve légère" – the title motif of the
hortensia variety 'Cousine Louise' from Angers,
France reflects this "beauty" and this
"charm" in a very special way! In all its botanical
elegance, it defines the soul of a garden
tour "to experience and to enjoy". This
is also reflected in the beauty of the word
"fabuleux" and the brilliant and masterful
solo recital "Concert apéritif du Piano", conceived
especially for this tour.
What unifies is the beautiful!
In his theory of the "Metamorphosis of
Plants" Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1782-
1832) developed "…a principle that permeates
all details and in which each part enlivens
the other". In "Faust" he explains:
"How each to the Whole its selfhood gives,
one in the other works and lives!"

lequel chaque partie vient animer l'autre.

Unbeschwert
und vollen Mutes beginnt seine
Reise und er erblickt die Schönheit dieser
Welt. Berge, Wiesen, Bäche und schier
endlose Täler erstrecken sich vor seinen
Augen. Franz Schubert erschafft in seiner
„ Wanderer-Fantasie“ eine unverkennbare
Kulisse. Doch auch die Angst und Einsamkeit
werden zum Thema, die Schubert geschickt
auszudrücken vermag. Dabei verwendet
er als musikalisches Zitat das aus
seiner eigenen Feder stammende Lied „Der
Wanderer“ – die Grundlage für den intimen
zweiten Satz in Variationsform und der musikalische
Motor für das einprägsame daktylische
Metrum. Das typische Spiel von
Dur und Moll, Einsamkeit und Trauer sowie
Hoffnung und Freude sind stets im Zwiegespräch
miteinander. Schubert beschreibt
Protagonisten in Franz Liszts „Mazeppa“,
die zum Albtraum werden soll. Liszt beschreibt
eine Episode aus dem Leben des
ukrainischen Kosaken-Hauptmannes Iwan
Mazeppa nach dem Gedicht des französischen
Dichters Victor Hugo.
Seufzer lässt Liszt rezitativartig in seinem
musikalischen Gedicht erklingen. Mazeppa
fällt. Doch dann geschieht das Wunder und
Seite 13
die ersehnte Erlösung wird zur Rettung.
Nach der Befreiung von kosakischen Reitern
wird er zum König des Volkes ernannt.
"Il tombe enfin! ... et se relève Roi!" - zitiert
Franz Liszt am Ende seiner Episode. ("Er
fällt schließlich und erhebt sich als König!")
Kein triumphales Ende nimmt der innere
und leidenschaftliche Konflikt mit dem
Schicksal in der „Appassionata“ von Beethoven.
Die Sonate wirkt wie ein Spiegel seiner
selbst – der zunehmende Gehörverlust,
das innere Ringen und eine Überwältigung
der Gefühle sind bei Beethoven nicht nur
hörbar, sondern auch spürbar. So plastisch

Testament 1802)
Beethovens Schicksalssinfonie entstand
1808, einige Jahre nach diesem Zitat. Abermals
klopft das Schicksal an die Tür – es
gibt Anklänge und Erinnerungen an die
„Appassionata“ und „Mazeppa“. Das wahrscheinlich
berühmteste Werk in der Musikgeschichte
fasste Franz Liszt kongenial
zusammen und ersetzt mit der Klaviertranskription
ein ganzes Orchester. Keinem
vereint.
Mit der „Sonata quasi fantasia“ erklingt ein
Juwel der klassischen Klaviermusik. Der Titel
erinnert noch an Beethovens „Mond-
scheinsonate“, doch mit der Komponistin
Zerline Erfurt lässt sich eine Brücke von
ihrer Heimatstadt Graz in Österreich nach
Frankreich und der Tradition der Salonmusik
herstellen. Kein Wunder, da sie als Komponistin,
Pianistin, Geigerin und Pädagogin
den vom Vater gegründeten Musiksalon Erfurt
im Herzen von Graz fortführte. Es erklingt
dieses hoch romantische Werk mit
wilden Kaskaden und einem Schwall der
Gefühle – leidenschaftlich, zärtlich, ungestüm.
Ein klassisches Wechselspiel von
männlichem und weiblichem Gefühl entsteht
und wird zusammengehalten vom
Einleitungsmotiv, welches als Bindeglied
agiert.
Petruschkas stattgefunden. Losgelöst
vom Schicksal bleibt sein Geist übrig
und macht dem Gaukler eine lange Nase.

A young man sets off on a journey into the
world and discovers the richness of nature.
He begins his journey carefree and full of
courage as he encounters the beauty of the
world. Mountains, meadows, streams and
seemingly endless valleys stretch before his
eyes. In his "Wanderer Fantasy" Franz Schubert
paints an incomparable landscape. Yet,
as Schubert skillfully expresses, fear and
loneliness are also a part of the journey. He
thus cites his own song "Der Wanderer" as
a musical quotation, whose variations form
the basis of the intimate second movement
and act as musical catalysts for the memorable
dactylic metre. The typical play of major
and minor, loneliness and grief as well
as hope and joy are always in dialogue with
each other. Schubert describes a life with all
its ups and downs, in which finally the joy of
life prevails and the young wanderer finds
his happiness in this world, expressed in the
radiant final C major chord.
The protagonist of Franz Liszt's "Mazeppa",
undergoes a completely different journey,
destined to become a nightmare. Based on
the poem by the French poet Victor Hugo,
Liszt describes an episode in the life of the
Ukrainian Cossack captain Ivan Mazeppa.
The story of the then young page begins
with a forbidden love affair with a noble
lady and turns into a tale of woe: as punishment
for the betrayal, he is stripped naked
and tied on his back to the back of a
horse. In a fury of lashing whips, the horse
is driven into the desert where Mazeppa is
to meet his agonizing death. With Liszt’s
shrill arpeggios, surging semiquavers and
highly masterful octaves, the listener is instantly
transported to this painful scene. As
the ride of death winds its course, the pain
becomes unbearable. With his last breaths
he begs for forgiveness – the sound of his
sighs portrayed as a recitative in Liszt’s
musical poem. Mazeppa falls. But then a
miracle occurs: the longed-for redemption
becomes salvation. Liberated by Cossack
horsemen, he is appointed king of the
Seite 16
CD 2
people. "Il tombe enfin! ... et se relève Roi!"
- quotes Franz Liszt at the end of his episode.
("In the end he falls and rises as king!")
In Beethoven's "Appassionata", the inner
passionate conflict with fate finds no triumphant
ending. The sonata acts as Beethoven’s
mirror – reflecting his increasing
deafness, his inner struggle and his overpowering
emotions which in his work are
rendered not only audible, but palpable.
The sonata is so vivid that already with
the first three notes one is immersed in
the dark underworld of the subconscious.
As fate knocks at the door, even a glimmer
of hope in the second movement fails to
free itself from the struggle.
As solace for these tales of sorrow, Consolation
No. 3 by Franz Liszt follows. The music
is reminiscent of the beauty of a blooming
flower.
"There was little missing, and I would have
ended my life – only it, the art, it held me
back." (Beethoven, Heiligenstadt Testament
1802)
Beethoven's Symphony of Fate was composed
in 1808, some years after this quotation.
Once again, fate knocks at the door
– there are echoes and memories of the
"Appassionata" and "Mazeppa". Franz Liszt
brilliantly compiles what is probably the
most famous work in the history of music
and replaces an entire orchestra with his
piano arrangement. No one else succeeds
in presenting such a magnificent work as a
piece for piano so brilliantly, without diminishing
or reducing it in any way. In defiance
of all of life's dangers, Beethoven as well
as Liszt appear here in the fullest bloom
of themselves. A rebel and a virtuoso appear
united.
The "Sonata quasi fantasia" is a jewel of
classical piano music. While the title is reminiscent
of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata",
Seite 17
here the composer Zerline Erfurt creates a
bridge from her hometown Graz in Austria
to France in the tradition of salon music.
It's no wonder, given that as a composer,
pianist, violinist and teacher she continues
the work of the Erfurt Music Salon that her
father founded in the heart of Graz. This
highly romantic work resounds with wild
cascades and a flood of emotions - passionate,
tender, impetuous. A classical interplay
of male and female emotion is created and
held together by the introductory motif,
which acts as a link. It stands as a symbol
for the equality of the sexes and of human
beings in harmony with nature.
Before we arrive in the rich soundscape of
Stravinsky, Franz Liszt's "Nuages gris" (Grey
Clouds) envelops everything. The composer's
formerly distinctive virtuosity disappears
in the development of a completely
new tonal language. It’s no longer about
notes, but about sound, mood and images –
a prelude to the three scenes of Stravinsky's
"Pétrouchka".
Three puppets are brought to life. The scene
is a St. Petersburg fair during the carnival
season. Before a curious audience, a magician
performs a magic spell which makes
his puppets dance (Russian Dance). These
are Petrushka, the ballerina – courted by
Petrushka, and the Moor, as the forceful
opponent. The initially mechanical movements
of the protagonists quickly change
as Petrushka develops human feelings.
We find ourselves in his emotional world
in the second movement (Petrushka’s
Room), where penned in by the magician,
he mourns the unrequited love of the ballerina
– his sighs ringing out and escalating
to sorrowful lamentations. In the third
movement (The Shrovetide Fair), the great
tumult of the fair, with all the richness of
color that Stravinsky depicts in collage-like
fashion, ends with Petrushka succumbing
to the Moor's sudden fatal blow. Even as the
magician shows that all was just magic and
the characters only puppets, Petrushka's
human incarnation had still taken place.
Freed from fate, his spirit remains and he
defiantly thumbs his nose at the magician.

m'a retenu ». – Beethoven, Testament de
Heiligenstadt 1802
