Dear collector friend,
True to the Chinese proverb „Don‘t throw away written paper“, we have spared no effort to bring you a
colourful and high-quality selection of paper money - banknotes and emergency money - for the 99th auction
catalogue. We are pleased to present the catalogue to you today and at the same time would like to cordially
invite you to the 99th Spring Auction Banknotes & Emergency Money on 06 May 2022.
You will find single notes as well as small and large lots from Germany, Europe and the „rest of the world“
with more than 450 lots.
The title note alone should make the mouths of lovers of German banknotes water: Lot 4176 is 50 Deutsche
Mark o.D. (08.1948-30.10.1949), series D/A from the series of Bank Deutscher Länder notes, offered in perfect
condition! Certainly the highlight in the series of German notes.
At the beginning of the auction, however, there is a diverse range of foreign banknotes, e.g. various Chinese
banks, a series from Portuguese India and the present-day United States of America, including 5 Dollars o.D.
(1958), series 541 - Military Payment Certificate.
As already mentioned in the title, emergency money is also in focus here. Besides the legendary Bielefeld
Stoffgeld, numerous cities from A to Z can be found with their colourful prints, including a complete sheet of
20 million marks 1923 of the city of Singen, the Silesian Wohlau and the city of Schwenningen. This auction
day comes to an end with numerous favourably called lots of individual cities or entire collections.
On behalf of the team of the Numismatics Department, we hope you enjoy looking through the banknote
auction catalogue and wish you every success in bidding for your lots. And please always remember the
Mexican proverb: „Let each one take good care of his small change, while the big notes can take good care of
themselves“.
Best regards from Störtebeker Haus in Hamburg!
