Idee - entsprechend der
magischen 12 G (gravity
force) beim Red Bull Air
Race, eine Hannes Arch Signature
mit dem Modell G12 zu machen -
prompt umgesetzt. Wie bist du mit
dem Endergebnis zufrieden?
Hannes Arch: Grundsätzlich find ich
einfach die Technik der Brille, das
Unzerbrechliche, super! Die hervorragenden
optischen Eigenschaften des
Glases, der Tragekomfort und das
Design kommen mir auch sehr entgegen.
Du bist ja 2009 als Weltmeister in die
Air Race Saison gegangen, am Ende
hat es leider für die Titelverteidigung
nicht ganz gereicht. Wie war es
Gejagter und nicht Jäger zu sein?
Hannes Arch: Es ist einfach die Luft
an der Spitze sehr dünn und es waren
ein paar kleine Fehler, die mich den
Titel gekostet haben. Einen Titel zu
verteidigen ist noch schwieriger, als ihn
zu holen, das musste ich in diesem Jahr
auch feststellen. Aber gut ... nach dem
Spiel ist vor dem Spiel! Ich freu mich
schon sehr auf die kommende Saison
und werde mich 100% auf den Sport
konzentrieren!
Ich weiss, dass du vom Extremsport
kommst, B.A.S.E.-Jumping und viele
andere waghalsige Dinge in der Luft
ausprobiert hast. Wie bist du aber
dann zur Fliegerei und zum Air Race
gekommen?
Hannes Arch: Angefangen habe ich
mit Hängegleiten und bin dann relativ
schnell zum Paragleiten gewechselt.
Ich denke man kann schon sagen, dass
ich in Europa zu den Pionieren beim
Kunstflug-Paragleiten gehört habe.
Im Jahr 1997 habe ich den Privat-
Pilotenschein gemacht und habe dann
später in der Kunstfliegerei meine
Erfüllung gefunden. Ich habe alles Geld
in das Fliegen gesteckt und als ich das
Angebot bekam, mich für RedBull Air
Race zu bewerben, war das schon eine
sehr schwierige Entscheidung. Ich musste
alles andere, 20 Jahre Extremsport,
aufgeben und mich mit 38 Jahren voll auf
etwas Neues konzentrieren - was noch
sehr unsicher für mich war. Von Anfang
an kam mir mein Gefühl für die Luft sehr
zu Gute und nach einem Jahr Training
wurde ich bereits Europameister und
stieg dann beim Red Bull Air Race als
Rookie ein und wurde im darauffolgenden
Jahr dann Weltmeister!

Race as the inspiration in creating
the G12 model as a Hannes Arch
signature. Are you happy with the
end result?
Hannes Arch: I find the engineering
behind the glasses as a whole, the fact
that they’re unbreakable, absolutely
fantastic! I’m also really taken with the
lenses’ excellent optical properties, the
wearing comfort and the design.
You entered the 2009 Air Race
season as defending World
Champion, but unfortunately in the
end, it wasn’t quite enough for your
keep your title. How did if feel to be
the one being pursued as opposed
to the one doing the pursuing?
Hannes Arch: It’s very tight at the top
and it was just a few minor errors that
costs me the title. Defending a title is
a lot harder than winning it - I realised
that this year. But ok … there’s always
a next time! I’m already looking forward
to the coming season and I’ll be concentrating
100% on the sport!
I know that you have an extreme
sport background. You were a base
jumper and you tried lots of other
daredevil things up in the air. How
did you get into flying and end up
joining the Air Race?
Hannes Arch: I started off with hanggliding
and quickly switched over to
paragliding. I think it’s safe to say that
I was one of the pioneers of aerobatic
paragliding in Europe. In 1997 I did my
private pilot licence and later I discovered
my true passion in life in the field
of aerobatics. I invested all my money
in flying and when I was offered the
chance of applying to join the Red Bull
Air Race it was a really hard decision.
I had to give up everything else - 20
years of extreme sport - and, at the
age of 38, concentrate on something
totally new which wasn’t even certain.
My feeling for the air helped me at lot
from the very beginning and after just
a year’s training I became European
Champion, then started with Red Bull
Air Race as a rookie and became
World Champion the following year!
