On October 14th in 1867, the care for people with epilepsy was started in
an old farm house near Bielefeld. 12 places for patients with epilepsy,
exclusively boys, were offered. The idea was that the therapy in children
having a short duration of epilepsy would be most effective.
From the beginning the aim was not only to offer effective medical
treatment which then was done with bromide the first specific antiepileptic
drug discovred 1857, but also education, school instruction, vocational
training and participation in spiritual life.
