students shaping the future<br />
With the completion of the International<br />
Consolidation Seminar this<br />
August, ETH<strong>sus</strong>tainability, the Center<br />
for Sustainability at ETH Zürich, is approaching<br />
the end of the first year of<br />
its World Yes Forum (WYF) Project.<br />
The project, which was initiated with<br />
the aim to expand the Center’s educational<br />
initiatives around the world,<br />
was started in the summer of 2004 as<br />
part of the group work conducted by<br />
the participants in that year’s Youth<br />
Encounter on Sustainability (YES) sessions.<br />
ETH<strong>sus</strong>tainability’s vision is to<br />
bring the educational concept originating<br />
in YES, which was first implemented<br />
in Braunwald, Switzerland in 2000,<br />
to other regions. The current approach<br />
is based on the idea that for education<br />
for leadership and <strong>sus</strong>tainability<br />
An educational initiative of ETH Zurich<br />
to be effective, it must be based upon<br />
a thorough understanding of the particular<br />
regions’ culture, history, and<br />
social development.<br />
THE REGIONAL CHALLENGE<br />
The initial project phase began with<br />
the formation of regional working<br />
groups, comprised of motivated YES<br />
alumni. The groups covered seven regions<br />
based on the global distribution<br />
of YES alumni. The seven groups (Africa;<br />
Asia; Europe; Japan; Latin America;<br />
North America, Australia, Canada<br />
and New Zealand; and Palestine) were<br />
each led by an alumnus/a chosen as<br />
the regional project manager. These<br />
project managers were hired by the<br />
Center to oversee the groups and ensure<br />
the submission of deliverables,
