Eating out The music playlist is great and so are the bands that play six nights a week. A gospel choir sings during brunch on Sundays. It’s loud on all the senses, but you can’t help but get your groove on. Susan Birtwistle finds some hedonistic soul in a dark Shoreditch basement I’d already written a piece this month on a small neighbourhood café. I was bigging up the importance of community, especially after the horrors of Westminster, Borough and Grenfell had left us all reeling. But unfortunately it went and closed down before LoveEast went to print. A shame for it, and me. So in a total contrast I’m eating at Red Rooster, the popular hangout that Marcus Samuelsson has brought over from Harlem. It’s more than American soul food – it’s a place that celebrates black culture, food and music; albeit a super luxe version. Actually, I’m lucky to eat at all, as somehow I’d managed to arrive two hours after my reservation and there was no 40 LOVEEAST longer a table. Before I know it, I’m standing there saying, "but I’m doing a review, there must be something". Luckily they’re nice, and a while later I’m sitting in an extremely dark basement using my phone torch to read the menu. Downstairs is much better than upstairs. Downstairs is where the superbling and brash fun stuff happens. You can imagine P Diddy or Mariah Carey turning up here for dinner. Whole chickens turn up at tables with a firework up their jacksies, being paraded like one of those big bottles of booze that certain clubs do in order to announce that the high spenders are in. It’s hedonistic and I liked it. We started with cocktails and slabs of delicious cornbread. Then came Sammy’s chicken 'n’ waffles with pickles and Fried Yardbird with its crispy candylike crust, served with a side of succotash (a mix of asparagus, favas, peas and charred corn). It’s big portions of comfort food but somehow we squeezed in a tasty mint chocolate bavarois. Leaving, I saw the sweetest elderly couple sitting right at the back in a quiet spot. But I won’t be bringing in-law Harry. I’ll be back for a big night with friends. From £4 for snacks to £55 for Obama Short Ribs for two.
