The new walkway links the tram platform with B Floor – making it much quicker and easier to reach the main areas of the hospital. The 90m long bridge was opened on 28 July - the 40th anniversary of QMC and has been named the Sir Peter Mansfield bridge after the pioneering Nottingham scientist who invented the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner. Sir Peter's name was the most popular suggestion in a competition held to find a new name for the tram bridge. Peter Homa, NUH Chief Executive, said:"This is a fitting tribute to the late Sir Peter, who was the main architect of the MRI scanner that established Nottingham's standing as a leader in medical science. “QMC remains the only hospital in the country to be directly connected by tram, a feature which sets Nottingham apart from other cities. Several thousand passengers use the tram daily to get to and from our hospital. The new footbridge will provide quick and easy access to the hospital and main entrance for all tram users, which we hope will only attract more people to choose the tram to get to and from QMC in the future." The bridge was opened by Patricia Petman, one of the dedicated band of volunteers who have helped direct visitors into the hospital from the tram platform since it opened in 2015. She said: "The new bridge will make an enormous difference not only to patients and visitors, but also to the tram volunteers, who have shown dedication over the last 2 years; standing in all weathers to help visitors find the quickest and easiest ways into the hospital.” Richard Bowtell, the Director of the University of Nottingham's Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre, said: "The naming of the tram bridge in honour of Sir Peter is a wonderful way to mark the 40th anniversary of QMC. Sir Peter's ground-breaking research was underpinned by collaboration with clinical colleagues in QMC and the links that he forged persist in the ongoing partnership between the NUH and the University in world-leading MRI research." @nottmhospitals
