A grandfather who is
determined to play golf
again after a stroke is the
first patient to benefit from
a new home rehabilitation
service that’s helping him
recover movement.
When Barbara Priestly found her
husband slumped at the wheel after a
road accident, she could tell instantly
that he had suffered a stroke.
David Priestly set out in the car last
December to help his son in the
office at their family firm. He had
been feeling unwell, but expected the
symptoms would go away in time.
He doesn’t remember the journey, but
was found less than a mile away from
home where his car had left the road
and drifted into a hedgerow when
the stroke hit.
“I remember getting a phone call from
a family friend who said that David
had been involved in an accident and
seemed to be injured,” Barbara said.
“My mum had a stroke years ago so I
knew the signs. His face was down and
his speech was slurred. He kept trying
to say ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry’.”
David had suffered a brain stem
haemorrhage and was taken by
ambulance to the City Hospital for
urgent treatment.
Our stroke service delivers specialised
care to adults of all ages. We care for
around 1,550 patients per year.
people without rehab.
But our new outreach service helps
Over six weeks David took part in 12
lives
It may sound very strange indeed
to say, “if you are unfortunate
enough to have a stroke, then
Nottingham is a good place
to have one,” as the services
available to stroke patients
are among the very best in the
nation, and this is particularly
true of the Stroke Unit at the City
Hospital Campus of NUH.
As a stroke survivor myself who has
been intimately involved with this
admirable service over some 15 years
now, I am delighted to be able to
introduce these three wonderful
examples of the excellent work
carried in the acute and rehabilitation
wards of NUH’s stroke Unit. What
is more, there are many such stories
that could be told of patients like me
and these gentlemen, who have over
time been able to develop as a result
of the services provided, to build
meaningful, positive and constructive
lives for themselves and for their
families, as well as fitting into the
community and social activities
again.
Please read these accounts and
witness the good work undertaken
and be proud of our Hospital’s
achievements.
Care ranges from emergency
assessment and treatments in the first
few hours after stroke, to rehabilitation
(physiotherapy, occupational and
speech therapy). These help the
patient to return home and regain
independence following the stroke.
The service also treats patients with
suspected minor strokes in a daily
clinic in an attempt to prevent further
larger ones occurring.
Complex stroke outreach
David was the first patient to benefit
from a new service to help patients
recover from the effects of stroke.
Our new complex stroke outreach team
offers patients 1-1 rehabilitation at
home. During these sessions specialist
rehabilitation potential.
Green-fingered stroke patients
at City Hospital are making use
of a newly refurbished garden
as part of their rehabilitation
therapy by planting seeds and
growing vegetables.
A rundown greenhouse and garden
outside our Beeston Ward has been
transformed using a 'Just Do It'
grant from Nottingham Hospitals
Charity and kitted out with new
gardening equipment.
The stroke gardening project
enables patients to recover in a
natural environment, offering all
the health benefits of the outdoors
while still focussing on their
individual goals.
His face was down and
his speech was slurred.
He kept trying to say ‘I’m
sorry, I’m sorry’
Lal Russell, who leads the complex stroke
outreach team, said: “Attending the
hospital for rehabilitation can be very
difficult or even impossible for some
people following a severe stroke.
In the past, many patients would arrive
at the clinic exhausted after their journey.
They were unable to fully benefit or even
participate in rehab once they arrived.
There were no options for patients who
couldn’t attend as an outpatient unless
I wouldn’t have got
anywhere without
the staff. I think they
are magnificent
A volunteer from the local Rotary Club
hosts the sessions. The patient’s learn
skills they can take home for continued
rehab, even after inpatient therapies
have ended. It’s all about learning
adaptive strategies, building strength
and endurance, improving balance,
memory and problem-solving,
He said: “At first I couldn’t even sit up
in bed on my own but the exercises were
a big help and gave me something
to focus on.”
Barbara would also take part in the
sessions so that she could help her
husband practice exercises when
the therapist left.
She said: “The transformation was
unbelievable. He got more and more
confident as he learned to do things for
himself, like washing with one hand.
By the final home session David was able
to get in and out of the car by himself
and looked forward to the sessions
at the hospital.” Now, less than half a
year later, David hopes to recover enough
movement to play golf. He’s already renewed
his membership at the local golf club and is
determined to play again.
as well as possibly yielding home
grown tomatoes.
Patient Graham Marson, 73, of
West Bridgford, said: “The gardening
helps because it makes you focus on
things all around you.
One of the hardest things for me
is keeping attention on what’s
happening to my left.
I have to really concentrate to see or
hear things unless they are to
my right side.
“I wouldn’t have got anywhere
without the staff. I think they are
magnificent,” he added.
Occupational Therapist Michelle
Burrows who helps patients to take
part said: “We try to involve each
patient no matter what their level of
impairment. For some patients it is
an opportunity to engage in a leisure
pursuit that they enjoyed prior to the
stroke. For others, it’s more about
the social side of the group or trying
a new activity.” The garden itself has
been designed to allow wheelchair
access and has raised beds, which
are easily accessible from a seated or
standing position.
New surgical
is first in East Midlands
Expectant mums will have access
to all the information they need
about pregnancy via a new
maternity app developed by
Nottingham midwives.
We are the first UK trust to launch our
own free maternity app for expectant
mums, families and friends.
The Pocket Midwife has been
developed by maternity matron
Julia Gudgeon and other members
of her team, with support from the
Nottingham Hospitals Charity.
Patients undergoing surgery for cancer
of the colon can be up on their feet
in just a few days thanks to a new
procedure offered at NUH.
Few surgeons in the UK routinely perform
single incision laparoscopic surgery
or ‘SILS’, a form of keyhole surgery that
leaves minimal scars.
But now two colorectal surgeons who
are experts at this procedure have joined
NUH. Dr Khalid Mohiuddin and Dr Bala
Bharathan previously worked and trained
together at a hospital in the North East,
where they carried out more than 40 cases
using the technique.
SILS is a minimally-invasive procedure
in which the surgeon operates almost
exclusively through a single entry point,
typically the patient’s navel.
Rather than traditional keyhole surgery
where four to five small incisions are made,
a single small incision can be used at the
entry point. All surgical instruments are
placed through this small incision.
Patient Anne Rawson, 73, from Eastwood,
was the first patient to undergo the
procedure at the QMC in April. She
remembers the first symptoms of her illness.
She said: “I came out in red blotches on my
skin but didn’t think it was anything to be
worried about. I wasn’t ill or in pain.
The last thing I thought was that it
would turn out to be cancer.”
Anne was referred to us by her family GP
with anaemia and was booked in for an
urgent endoscopy to find out the cause of
her symptoms. Further tests revealed that
she had right colon cancer causing her
symptoms of anaemia.
The test revealed stage one cancer that was
almost 8cm in size. Dr Khalid Mohiuddin
removed the tumour within two weeks
using the SILS technique.
He said: “The surgery was completely
successful and Anne was back on her feet in
no time. That’s one of the main advantages
of this approach. Patients can get on with
their lives much faster, with less need of
pain relief. And the incision, just below the
naval, is almost invisible afterwards.”
The two surgeons have now performed the
operation on 10 patients for both elective
and emergency colorectal resections
with good outcomes.
Fastfacts
Previously when tumours were
removed using open surgery the
patient could be in hospital for
more than two weeks.
Recovery times following SILS are much
shorter. Patients are typically fit to go
home after three or four days.
It contains general pregnancy
information that is useful to all
prospective parents and their
families, but also contains information
specific to NUH, such as our maternity
leaflets and useful contact numbers.
The app includes…
• a pregnancy calendar, which
describes the baby’s development
and changes to the mum’s body
• a selfie gallery so mums can log the
progress of their growing bump
• a contraction counter for early
labour
• it can also send a birth
announcement to everyone in your
address book
Julia said: “We could see that many
women were struggling to access
information available to them and
what they found wasn’t always
correct. Our aim was to provide
parents with a useful resource
that they could trust.”
The pocket midwife was developed
with feedback from 100 pregnant
women, who were asked what
information they would like.
The app is free to download from
the Apple store and Google Play.

CF Centre
celebrates first
anniversary
‘Surgeons gave
me back my life’
Our £6.6m Cystic Fibrosis centre has
celebrated its first anniversary after a
successful 12 months.
Since the state-of-the-art Wolfson Centre
opened its doors last year we have cared
for more than 176 patients.
The first patient to experience the
new centre at City Hospital, was
25-year-old Sam Deakin.
Exercise enthusiast Sam, from Nottingham,
is currently waiting for a double lung
transplant and worked
full-time until she became too ill to
continue. She said: “I was born at
the City Hospital and have been coming
here all my life.
“I used to hate sitting in a bay on the
respiratory ward. Then I started missing
appointments because I felt guilty about
taking the time off work. But now I’ve got
my own room and the facilities are better I
don’t mind coming so much.
“Everyone says how good the food is here.
But for me the gym is the best.
I used to feel self-conscious working out
in the hospital gym. Exercise makes me
cough even more and people think there’s
something wrong. But we have our own
fitness studio here and I can push
myself further without worrying
what people think.”
The centre – which can cater for up to
250 patients a year – has 16 tailor-made
rooms, a gym, a kitchen, an IT suite, a
garden and a lounge.
It was jointly funded by NUH and
Nottingham Hospitals Charity.
Doctors rescue stroke
survivor from ‘living hell’
A dad who suffered a devastating
brain haemorrhage has thanked NUH
doctors for helping him lead a normal
life and regain his confidence.
Malcolm Jarvis, 66, suffered a stroke when
he was just 52 years-old. It left him unable
to walk without assistance and he lost all
feeling in the right side of his face. But
worse for him was the sense of isolation
from staying inside to hide his face.
On a January afternoon in 2002 the
retired engineer was suffering with a
headache when the pain suddenly started
to get worse.
Malcolm remembers hearing a sound ‘like
a kettle boiling’ inside his head before
losing all co-ordination and falling face
down on the ground. He was rushed to
the stroke unit at City Hospital where he
was treated for bleeding in his brain that
destroyed nerves down the left side of his
body and could have killed him.
He said: “For the first week after the
stroke I was in another world. My balance
was completely gone. I was afraid to walk
in case I fell over.”
The process of recovery begins almost
immediately after patients are admitted
to hospital. Patients recover movement by
taking part in activities that exercise both
mind and muscle.
Malcolm, who led an active life as an
amateur cricket player, made steady
progress with rehabilitation on our Beeston
Ward but found it harder to cope with the
facial deformity caused by the stroke.
“I avoided mirrors for years after the
stroke. My mouth and eyelids drooped
My speech was slurred
and I had a lot of problems
with my eyes. I couldn’t
even sleep properly
because my eyelid
let in the light.
It felt like a living hell
badly on one side. My speech was slurred
and I couldn’t even sleep properly. It felt
like a living hell.”
Malcolm gave up many of the social
activities he enjoyed before the stroke,
even though he was gradually
gaining mobility.
“I didn’t want people to see me. Even
when my son got married I didn’t want to
be at the wedding. It felt like I was grieving
for the life I’d lost.”
His confidence was at an all-time low
before he was referred for treatment
from two specialists in plastic surgery and
ophthalmology.
Plastic Surgeon Dr Ciaran O’Boyle and
Ophthalmic Consultant Dr Katya Tambe
performed a series of operations. Now,
after years of therapy and five operations,
he has nominated the doctors who
helped him for a NUHonours award. The
awards are given out at the Trust’s annual
celebration of staff excellence. Malcolm
credits the clinicians for helping him stand
proudly at his son’s wedding.
He said: “My son's wedding day was one
of the proudest moments of my life and
I just want to thank them for helping me
experience it with my family. The surgery
has really changed my life. It’s taken me
out of a world of isolation and helped me
re-join society.”
patient on their ambulance journey,
are required to drive to Nottingham
• Started her career with Cadbury before
spending over 20 years of her pre-NHS
career in HR at Boots UK
The new Sat Nav and iPad was the
brainwave of Abi Hill from the Paediatric
Critical Care Retrieval Team. The team
transfers around 90 young patients each
year. Two specially trained medical staff
New Director of Human Resources,
Nicky Hill, first moved to Nottingham
from her native Manchester 30 years
ago to study languages.
Why NUH?
Nottingham is my home and I have long
been keen to join the NHS. As a patient
here recovering from surgery I remember
thinking ‘what a fascinating and rewarding
place to work.’ At that time I was working
for Boots and I could see some parallels in
managing a large organisation caring for
people. I got my first chance in the NHS
at Chesterfield which I really enjoyed, but
when the opportunity to work at NUH
came up I couldn’t ignore it.
First impressions?
I’m loving it already. The people here are
hugely positive and enthusiastic and there
is a great will to get it right for patients.
That said, I think there is still work to do
on the way we work and that will be one
area of focus for me.
What can we expect from you?
I’m straightforward, I like to get to the
point, be open and stick to my word. I like
to get out from behind my desk and see
what’s happening on the frontline.
What makes you tick?
I’m driven by working hard to help staff
achieve their best and treating everyone as
an individual. Improving people’s working
lives ultimately means we create a better
environment to care for patients.
What are your biggest challenges?
We always have to work hard to get
the basics right, making the recruitment
process slicker and ensuring people are
getting the right training and support.
Improving how we work and making it
easier to get decisions made more quickly
will be a challenge. I’m also clear that
we have to find a realistic and workable
solution to things like car parking for staff
and we’re working on that.
What is your ambition for NUH?
Spreading a ‘can do’ culture into every
team. I want managers to feel part of a
learning organisation structured to allow
individuals to thrive.
But even after 30 years in the city
we can’t convert you to Nottingham
Forest or Notts County?
No, I was born in Manchester and after
many years on the waiting list I have finally
got a season ticket at Old Trafford next
year. I’ve had to wait but I now have the
chance to make the most of it – a bit like
my role at NUH really.
Are you interested in nursing at NUH?
As a large acute teaching hospital,
we have a wide range of fantastic
opportunities for people looking to
develop their career in the NHS.
Many of our services are nationally, or internationally,
renowned and we have a strong programme of support
Patients shape
improvements
The care we give patients who
have undergone day surgery has
improved thanks to a new project
which uses their opinions to
enhance their treatment.
The project involves using staff called
theatre patient champions who collect
feedback from our patients after their
surgery. They ask questions to find
out how safe patients felt during their
treatment, to understand clearly what
could have been done better and
what worked well.
Mark Young has recently undergone
surgery for a swollen nerve in his foot. He
said: “It is a great idea, patients should
always have the chance to offer feedback as
they have the best insight into what might
need to be changed. Sometimes it might
just be simple things but they can make a
big difference especially if people feel a little
anxious about their surgery.”
Maria Shallow, Deputy Clinical Lead, said:
“We have made significant improvements
to our theatres at both hospitals as a direct
result of listening to feedback from patients
as well as learning from each other to
make improvements to our service. In turn,
we have motivated our teams who look
forward to visiting their patients to see how
I was vomiting all the
My whole body shut down,
I was at severe risk of
kidney failure.
NUH has become the first Trust in the
country to develop a new treatment
plan to support women suffering from
severe sickness during pregnancy.
Women with severe sickness during
pregnancy, known as hyperemesis
gravidarum, can become dangerously
dehydrated which can put them and their
baby at risk. It affects 0.1‐1% of pregnant
women and can be severe enough to
warrant hospital admission and require
intravenous fluid therapy.
The Duchess of Cambridge has famously
suffered during both of her pregnancies,
bringing the condition into the spotlight
in recent years.
Clinical teams from NUH have developed
new treatment guidelines in a joint
approach with GPs in Nottingham,
on how to treat women suffering
from the condition, to help prevent
hospital admissions.
Primary school teacher Rachel Hawthorne,
36, of Radcliffe-on-Trent, suffered with
the condition through her pregnancy. She
said: “I was vomiting all the time. It was
relentless and absolutely draining. My
whole body shut down, I was at severe
risk of kidney failure.
“There's a lot of guilt. There is worry for
the baby’s health, worry about medication
you're given, worry that this will all harm
the baby. To be in your own environment
makes a difference.
“I was really fortunate that the staff at
QMC let me come in for IV fluid rehydration
every 48 hours during my pregnancy, when
I wasn't an inpatient. It's great that this is
now available to many more women.”
Rachel now works with the charity
Pregnancy Sickness Support to offer support
to women with the condition and the
charity fully supports the NUH guidelines.
She said: “It can be a lonely experience so it
helps to not only have support but to have
support from someone who knows what
you are going through.”
Chairman of the charity, Caitlin Dean, said:
“This will make a huge difference, not just
to the women but their families as well.
There is a real stigma about this condition
and it’s not always taken seriously.
The work NUH are doing will be hugely
beneficial. I hope other areas will follow
their guidelines.”
Shilpa Deb, lead consultant for Emergency
Gynaecology at NUH, said: “Hyperemesis is
a common problem, the main issue being
dehydration. We now have a dedicated
hydration suite which is comfortable and
relaxed. We have reduced the number of
overnight admissions significantly since
starting this work, however, we want more
women to be at home with their families as
much as possible during their pregnancy.”
• Historically, hyperemesis was
thought to be a psychotic disorder.
Fortunately, this view has been
Next
day
delivery
New mums can now go home just
24 hours after a planned caesarean
section thanks to an innovative
recovery programme being used
at our hospitals.
Women would previously stay in hospital
for at least a few days after a c-section.
Now, most are home within 24 hours
of their surgery.
Amelia Banks, NUH Consultant
Anaesthetist, said: “The second day of
recovery in hospital was just waiting.
It was unnecessary. Resting at home is
more comfortable. Once women are
mobile, midwives are free to care and
beds are available more quickly for new
patients. As a result, we are less likely
to have to close our doors to women
because we are full, and this can benefit
the wider community. It’s a win for all.”
“It is important to stress that we only
send women home if it is right for them
– we won’t compromise safety.”
Lauren Twells recently had her second
baby Alicia by elective section. She said:
“It’s more relaxing at home than in
hospital. I can recover more quickly and
have my family around me all the time.
In hospital, there are understandable
visiting restrictions. My partner and I
both get to bond with Alicia and her
sister can get to know her. It’s better for
the whole family.”
My partner and I both
get to bond with Alicia
and her sister can get to
know her. It’s better for
the whole family
“I had a similar operation once and I
was in hospital for a week. I was in pain
the whole time. This time, thanks to the
enhanced recovery programme, I was up
showering within hours and home the
next day. I wasn’t in much pain – I only
needed over-the-counter pain killers.
The staff are great but it’s better to be
at home. We can bond more as a family
and that makes a huge difference. Lying
your family – there’s no contest”
Spotlight on dementia
We took part in a number of
activities during Dementia
Awareness Week last month.
Dementia affects around 800,000 people
in the United Kingdom and, nationally,
an estimated 25% of hospital beds are
occupied by people with dementia.
This group of patients is often subject
to longer stays, delayed discharges and
readmissions to hospital.
Throughout the week, our hospitals
focused on a different area of dementia
care each day – from nutrition to hearing
loss. We also consulted with families and
carers about how they could be better
supported, and showcased our Playlist
for Life scheme, which uses the power of
music to help patients.
All the nurses were fantastic and friendly and acted
professionally all the way through. Thank you so much.
I will go to the Emergency Department/IAU again should
anything urgent arise. I love the very nice and vibrant
new IAU department. It helps patients with urgent needs to
be seen more quickly and eases pressure on
staff. It really is 10/10.
Within 4 hours, I had been through A&E and agreed a
treatment plan, gone up to the Maxillofacial Department
for X-ray and then tooth extraction and draining the
abscess, then to pharmacy (half hour wait) for follow-up
medicines. Not the nicest of things to have done but the
staff were very good at calming and reassuring me when I
was very nervous.
I started my nursing career 38 years ago
at QMC. I am, therefore, very pleased to
write about the excellent care my father-inlaw
received recently when he needed urgent
bowel surgery. As I now live in Norfolk the
daily phone calls on his progress were much
appreciated. When we visited we found warm
friendly staff who could not be more
@nottmhospitals how am I supposed to change my appointment if
every time I call no one answers or returns my voicemails?
I attended A&E on Thursday 5 March, in the evening.
Everyone I came in contact with - student, doctor, nurses,
x-ray dept, treated me with courtesy and good humour. I was
subsequently taken to the Ear, Nose and Throat ward where
a blood clot was suctioned from the back of my throat. The
doctor who performed this was fantastic, but another big
plus in their favour was that as they were busy dashing
from room to room, they never failed to acknowledge my
husband and me in the waiting area, and apologise for
keeping us waiting. And a big thank you to the nursing
staff who gave my husband a very welcome cuppa.
I have been doing physio at The City Campus for seven
months and have had great support and encouragement from
my physiotherapist.
From not being able to walk to now running regularly,
my progress has been fantastic, for what is a nasty
and complicated injury. An excellent team and well-run
Are you up to the challenge?
Olivia is on the
road to recovery
Toddler Olivia Fern from Coalville
in Leicestershire is lucky to be alive
thanks to the quick actions of her
dad David.
He sensed his little girl wasn’t well and
took her to get assessed at QMC. It was
discovered that Olivia was suffering from a
rare brain cancer.
David said: "They told us that if they didn't
operate that day, or the next day, then
Olivia probably wouldn't have made it, says
David, “it was that bad. They told us there
was a risk she might not survive and that if
she did, she might be left with a disability.”
They told us there was
a risk she might not
survive and that if she did,
she might be left
with a disability
Two teams of surgeons worked in unison
for the duration of the 10-hour operation
and managed to remove 90 per cent of
Olivia's tumour.
“The treatment we have received at NUH
has been second to none,” says David,
“they saved Olivia’s life and I can’t thank the
medical staff enough!”
Olivia is responding well to chemotherapy
and her tumour hasn’t increased in size.
However she may still need to have an
operation in the future.
Nottingham Hospitals Charity has launched
an appeal to help treat patients with
brain cancer like Olivia, by purchasing an
intraoperative MRI scanner.
The scanner can be used while a patient
is on the operating table and enables
clinicians to see very clear detail, making
surgery even more accurate and giving the
patient the best possible result.
Donald MacArthur, Consultant
Neurosurgeon at Nottingham Children’s
Hospital, said: “Surgery for brain tumours,
especially in children is usually about trying
to remove as much of the tumour tissue as
possible, as safely as possible, from within
the delicate functioning brain tissue. The
shape, nature or location of some tumours
means this is not always straightforward.
“There’s now new technology which can
help me and my colleagues to improve the
care we offer patients. The neurosurgical
teams in Nottingham could be the first
in the UK to use this technology to treat
patients and to support further research
into rare forms of brain tumours.”
Having an iMRI scanner available at NUH
could make all the difference to patients
like Olivia who may need treatment in the
future.
To help us raise the £650,000 needed for
the new state-of-the-art scanner please call
