High School in Mississauga where she
developed a passion for languages and
theatre. As a teenager, her first foray into
volunteering was as a Candy Striper.
After studying at Queen’s University,
L’Université de Strasbourg and the
University of Toronto, she became
a French, English and Theatre Arts teacher, heading the
Drama department at Crescent School and directing its
productions for 32 years. While teaching, she co-facilitated four
Outreach trips with students to South Africa’s Eastern Cape
For fifteen years, she volunteered as a bilingual reader of books
volunteered at an orphanage in Haiti, assisted with the
settlement of a Syrian family and engaged in a Changemaker
observation visit to India.
Currently, she facilitates empathy and peer mediation
workshops, and stress management circles for students in
downtown Toronto schools for Friendship in Action, a non-forprofit
Community Support
In 2004 my husband was diagnosed
with stage 4 colon cancer and passed
away exactly 7 months from being
diagnosed. Six weeks later my father
passed from the same disease. It was
these 2 eventsin my life that made me
realize how important having friends
and family support is to the patient and caregiver.Since then
many friends were diagnosed with cancer and other illnesses
that require support. I now volunteer my time by bringing
them to their treatments, stay with them while they are
inpatients and continue to support them once they’re at
home. When a dear friend passed recently, I worked with his
wife to settle his estate.
One day at the hospital, a stranger approached and handed
me a parking pass, explaining she no longer needed it. That
pass paid for 8 visits to bring one of my friends to their
treatments.
