Just slipping your card in the machine, looking briefly at the
camera, and then walking on through passport control is no
longer science fiction at Schiphol Airport thanks to Privium.
Travellers who have joined the Privium scheme no longer
lose time queuing at passport control, because the unique
characteristics of their iris stored on their Privium membership
card are sufficient to allow them to take the members’ lane
through passport control. A Dutch company called Dartagnan
that specialises in airport service programs developed the
technology for this automated iris recognition system.
Compared to other forms of biometric identification (i.e. finger
tip or palm recognition), iris recognition is the most reliable and
easy to use, because the iris hardly changes throughout a

person’s lifetime – even if his or her eye is damaged in some
way. Once a person’s eye has been photographed, the details
of the iris are stored only on the Privium card chip and are then
compared with the picture of the person’s eye every time he
or she goes through passport control. After the system was
introduced at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, it was subsequently
exported to Indonesia and who knows, the rest of the world
could soon follow!
