What’s New Terminal Using the power of Movexx However you look at it, pushing luggage trolleys, shopping trolleys or roll containers that are full of cartons of milk or crates of beer is hard work. Or at least it was – because that has now changed with the arrival of the lightweight, easily manoeuvrable Movexx, a compact user-friendly drag machine for transporting roll containers and other rolling objects up to 2,500 kg in weight from A to B easily and without the need for any physical exertion, however uneven and steep the journey from A to B is. The drag machine is easy to hook up and can be connected to almost any type of container or other rolling object, thanks to the fully adjustable height of the hook. A tent offers all the space you need In 2002 Schiphol Airport was faced with the question of how to convert the existing baggage hall without any loss of capacity in order to be prepared for further growth in air traffic. The Dutch company De Boer offered the ideal solution to the lack of space for baggage handling in the form of a tent that would provide temporary accommodation for a five-year period. De Boer’s temporary baggage hall came complete with fire-resistant, insulated sidewalls, lighting, air conditioning and special rapid access doors for the baggage trolleys. Following the success of the Schiphol project, DOHA International Airport in Qatar contracted De Boer to put up a temporary baggage hall that could be used whilst a new airport was being built. As well as needing the hall to be available quickly, it was also important to the Qatar airport authorities that the architecture of the hall fit in with that of the existing airport buildings. De Boer had the perfect solution. The temporary baggage hall will ultimately have been in use for five years by the time that the new airport is complete. As well as baggage handling, De Boer’s temporary 20 Holland Airport Technology Thanks to a programming unit, acceleration, braking distance, speed moving forward, speed moving backward and tractive power are also all fully adjustable according to personal preference and current needs. There are now 3 Movexx drag machines in use at Schiphol for transporting goods to the shops, and a trial involving mail carts is underway at Frankfurt airport. This system gives airports a broad view of what piece of runway, taxiway, tunnel or any other infrastructure has been used by what type of aircraft. This allows them to plan their expensive maintenance programmes better and save money by virtue of the ability to extend the time for maintenance. On the other hand, the overall capacity will be higher, if the airport is able to keep its runways and taxiways open for a longer period of time. KLM is now using the system at Schiphol, where it is achieving clear results already with real-time information about all aircraft. TNT well prepared for the Christmas rush The most central point in the ‘single-hub-and-spoke’ network established by TNT Express Worldwide is the European hub at Bierset Airport near Liege in Belgium. Because of the explosive increase in air freight volume TNT has built a new distribution centre with a surface area of 21,000 m2 in Liège. The Dutch company SACO is installing the centre’s fully automatic airfreight handling system (ULDs). The system is an entirely new phenomenon, because handling by hand is still the traditional method in the express sector. The centre’s handling process will be much more efficient and the capacity per square metre of floor area will be significantly increased, thanks to this SACO solution. SACO manufactures a total of some 250 motorised Trespa Virtuon wall lining at Dallas Fort Worth Airport in Dallas, Texas Flight information and advertising on a single display Schiphol Airport is one of the first airports in the world to offer a combination of flight information and multimedia content in its Flight Information Display System (FIDS), which is supplied by Dutch company Infologic. The content can vary from advertisements and product information to safety films and an explanation of boarding procedures, with both sound and pictures if so desired. This combination gives the flight information a livelier appearance and allows airport retailers to keep potential customers inside the shops for longer, thus giving them a better opportunity to highlight their products and services in real time with information updates on screen within 1 second. www.hollandtrade.com roller belts in various designs, each of which is suitable for transporting special air freight containers and pallets measuring up to 3.2 x 2.4 metres and weighing up to 6,800 kg. A central IT system operates the assembly automatically, monitors performance and reports on the handling process. One of the reasons why TNT chose SACO is the very short delivery time that SACO can guarantee, which is also why it was still possible to bring the system online before the 2007 December rush. h.v.schaik@saco.aero www.saco.aero Tough and smart From new build in Doha to expansion in Singapore, there seems to be no stopping the boom in airport construction and renovation. The Thomas Bradley International Terminal in Los Angeles is another example of airport renovation. Trespa provides wall lining – ‘Trespa Virtuon’ – in this kind of construction and renovation project. Trespa Virtuon wall lining consists of compact high-pressure laminate (HPL) plates specifically developed for highly demanding interiors, where the wall lining has to be both aesthetically pleasing and top of the line as regards performance, because as well as looking good, airport walls need to be resistant to dirt, easy to maintain and capable of withstanding the years of people, baggage and trolleys passing through the airport. These requirements mean that Trespa Virtuon is mainly used in the busiest parts of an airport. However, low maintenance was not the only consideration for Thomas Bradley International Terminal in Los Angeles. As interior architect Eunjo Cho explains: “Our choice of Virtuon was not just influenced by its durability, its attractive colours or its surface sheen. In the USA today, buildings are being rated under the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building rating system. This is serious and because Virtuon is a green product it makes a very big contribution towards the airport’s overall rating.” d.goven@trespa.com www.trespa.com This multimedia information facility will usually run perfectly well on an LCD or plasma screen combined with a Windows XP computer and the airport’s standard network. The system is already fully developed and can be customised to suit the customer’s wishes.
