On behalf of my colleagues, I would like to thank you all for your support and custom
Autosport Show
Koni Shock Absorbers (distributed exclusively
in the UK by CAF) once again exhibited at
the popular Autosport International show in
January. Visitors to our stand were able to see
examples from the entire Koni product range
and speak to our knowledgeable staff about
suspension upgrades
Elsewhere at the show all sorts of celebrities,
including F1 stars David Coulthard, Paul
di Resta and Allan McNish, were taking part
in live interviews and signing autographs.
There was also an F1 grid which included
di Resta’s Force India VJM04 as well as the
2011 championship winning Red Bull RB7.
MOT changes
The new 2012 MOT regulations came into
force on 1st January, with several new
‘Reasons for Rejection’ introduced to the
MOT Testers’ manual in order to bring us
more into line with Europe.
Two areas of the test now require
additional approved equipment as follows:-
• The presence of a fuel leak on gas
powered vehicles must now be confirmed
with the use of a leak detection product.
The IAAF Annual Awards ceremony took
place in December, with excellence in the
Independent Aftermarket recognised and
rewarded. Among this year’s recipients of the
IAAF Awards were two of CAF’s fellow Parts
Alliance members, along with one of our key
suppliers:
Supplier of the Year - NGK Spark
Plugs (UK)
NGK is the leading supplier of OE spark
plugs, glow plugs and NTK Lambda sensors,
and have won this accolade for the third
time. Brian Childs, NGK’s Deputy MD,
commented: “It is a great achievement
for the company to win such a prestigious
award.”
This must be a proprietary leak detection
spray which meets BS EN 14291:2004
requirements and the spray should be
replaced when its manufacturer’s expiry
date is exceeded.
• Operation of 13-pin trailer electrical
sockets using an approved trailer socket
test tool. Only trailer socket test tools on
the VOSA list of approved equipment are
acceptable.
Both these items are available from your
local CAF branch, details of the products
can be found on page 9 of this issue.
And the winner is…
Parts Person of the Year - Matthew Warren, of CES (UK)
Matthew Warren from CES won the prestigious Parts Person award through having
to demonstrate his parts knowledge, business acumen and communication skills to
a select judging panel. With over 400 staff, CES predominantly cover the north west
of England and north Wales. A member of The Parts Alliance, CES are much like
Camberley Auto Factors when it comes to staff training, with both companies providing
regular training including the ATA Parts Advisor course.
Distributor of Excellence - Mill Autoquip
Mill Autoquip operates in the south west of England and employs over 260 staff. This
is the first time that the company has received an IAAF award and they succeed fellow
Parts Alliance members Allparts Automotive and CES as holders of this title.
ON THE ‘ROLLING’ ROAD
FINISHING OFF THE 2011 SEASON
“With no track activity over winter your mind tends to find its way to
thinking about next years racing. But before scribbling down the first
draft of the list of ‘things to do’ I wanted to know how much power
was left in my car after the past few seasons of racing.
One Saturday morning in October we strapped the car to the trailer and
paid Novatech in Slough a visit. Company owner Bernie positioned the
car on his rolling road and started setting up to get a power reading.
Previous rolling road readings I have for the car, showed the car was
running just over 120bhp. After a couple of runs on the rollers it became
apparent that the car was now barely coming in over 100bhp. So over
the last few seasons racing I’ve lost nearly 20% of my power. (Which
explains why I struggled so hard to reach or beat my personal best
times this year).
Now, armed with this information, I’m more determind to get working
on the car and hopefully rediscover some of the missing power.
Thanks to Bernie at Novatech (NTR) in Slough.”
Sarah Niblett, CAF Marketing Dept www.sarahsracing.co.uk
Early in 2011, Brooklands College were
donated an Audi A8 by the parent of a student.
Shortly after, the decision was made to enter
the car into the Britcar Series and to try and
race in at least 2 of the main championship
races in the UK with an additional aim of
competing in the Britcar 24 Hour race at
Silverstone in September.
With the car being donated in production road
car format, a plan was made to strip down and
prepare the car for racing purposes. Once
stripped, the car then needed to be fitted with
a suitable roll cage and all of the necessary
equipment required to race in the identified
championship.
By June, work on the Audi had progressed
enough for the car to receive an official
Exclusive News for the Independent Garage Trade
MOTORSPORT
launch. This was attended by the new college
Principal, Maureen Kilminster, Gordon Parris
MBE JP from the Children with Special Needs
Foundation, along with representatives of
the projects various sponsors which included
Camberley Auto Factors.
Unfortunately, the impending students’ summer
break, coupled with a delay in obtaining and
fitting the appropriate Motorsport suspension,
meant that the car wasn’t ready for track
testing in July. This meant that the plan to
race in September’s Britcar 24 Hour Race at
Silverstone had to be cancelled.
This was probably a blessing in disguise, given
that the weather for the actual race weekend
was recorded as the warmest on record for
late September. That meant that the tyre
and a mention on my website or printed articles please email me,
or contact me through my website and I will be pleased to let you
know the sponsorship opportunities available.
degradation estimates made for the race would
have been significantly inaccurate, as the team
was relying on data from previous events.
Ultimately, this would have affected the whole
race strategy, meaning that a non-finish would
have been very likely.
With studying underway again in September,
it was time to fit the new suspension units and
to re-engineer the rear spring mountings to
suit the revised design. These first few weeks
of term would also see major work to ensure
that the rear exterior lighting would meet the
expected specification for the Britcar series
in 2012.
In early October, the College were contacted
by the organisers of the Brooklands Motorsport
Autumn Show and asked that the team and
a selection of their racing cars should take
part. This event took place at the Brooklands
Museum site and Mercedes-Benz World to
include their Test Track. It was too good an
opportunity to miss for the college Audi to
have its first track test. Second year students
studying Motorsport at Foundation Degree and
staff worked extra class sessions so that the
car was ready to be driven on track for the
first time.
The weather on the day could not have been
better and the Audi attracted a significant
amount of interest from the public, media and
potential additional supporters. These included
Bosch Motorsport, who hope to support
the project in respect to race specification
upgrades to engine, gearbox and braking
electronics.
Further work on the car is now planned for
the Spring Term and the objective remains
to compete in a Britcar 24 hour race. There
are now additional plans to take part in a
shorter endurance event, which takes place at
Belgium’s Spa Francorchamps circuit in June.
As well as being an excellent opportunity for all
the students involved, it will prove an invaluable
learning experience for the full 24 hour event.
MECHANEX REVIEW
SHOW REVIEW
A record number of visitors turned out to this year’s MechanEx show, keen to
see the latest products and services available to the independent aftermarket.
The focal point of CAF’s stand was the Caftec division, enabling visitors to see
some of the latest technical equipment up-close, whilst discussing installation,
training and aftersales support options with the Caftec team.
Parked up outside the show was our brand new ‘product demo’ van. This was
staffed by our Engine Management Specialists, who were able to talk through the
latest products including Air Mass Meters, Map Sensors and EGR Valves. There
was also quite a bit of interest in our range of tyre pressure monitoring sensors,
with several customers grabbing copies of our recently produced brochure.
The Parts Alliance also had a stand at the show, which was partly manned by some of
our sales team. Here, customers were able to learn about the range of products and
services available exclusively through Parts Alliance Members; these included the GS One
Stop garage management programme, the ebeepbeep online servicing and MOT booking
website and our own-brand DriveTec and Miratec product ranges.
Away from the main exhibition area, all customers who had pre-registered were able to
claim a free bacon roll, courtesy of CAF. All canteen staff were wearing CAF branded
clothing, whilst even the paper plates, table cloths and napkins were all emblazoned
with our logo!
Blue Print
The Nissan Navara is known for its troublesome half shaft,
a part now available to the aftermarket from Blue Print. One of
the problems lies in the seals, with the originals allowing water
and dirt to get into the bearing which then ultimately causes
failure. The seals on the Blue Print replacement have been
upgraded to avoid this issue. The bearings are not available
as a separate item from OE, resulting in the need to
replace the complete half shaft.
Diesel fuel is susceptible to bacterial
that it can even eat through stainless
NEW PRODUCTS
We’re expanding our range
A common failing part on various Seat & VW applications including
Cordoba, Leon, Ibiza, Toledo, Bora and Golf, is the sensor on the
radiator expansion tank. The symptoms are the coolant level light on
the dashboard comes on and flashes indicating a low coolant level
and beeps, even when the coolant level is correct. The cause of
this is that the sensor float inside the bottle becomes corroded
over time, giving an incorrect reading.
As the coolant level sensor is built in
to the tank, however, when it goes
wrong the whole tank needs to
be replaced. We now stock the
replacement unit from Hella,
available via your local
As vehicle technology continues to evolve, components are
becoming more sophisticated. These components are becoming
increasingly common in vehicles entering the aftermarket and
are no longer restricted to being available from main dealers.
In this ongoing feature, our Engine Management Centre
specialists explain all about ECU’s.
HISTORY
The concept of using a single unit to control multiple functions on an engine, dates
back to the 1930’s, with the development of the Kommandogerät (translated
“command-device”) by BMW for use on their 801 radial aircraft engine. Although the
unit was mechanical-hydraulic as opposed to its modern electronic counterparts, it
was one of the first systems to automatically control multiple engine functions. These
functions included fuel flow, propeller pitch, supercharger setting, mixture and ignition
timing, all in response to a single throttle lever.
The use of a single control unit did not make its way into the automotive field until the
advent of microelectronics. One of the first widespread systems to utilise an electronic
control unit was the KE-Jetronic system developed by Bosch in the late 1980’s to
comply with the introduction of emission standards.
ANATOMY
Modern Engine Management systems have had to evolve in order to cope with such
changes as tighter emission standards, demand in better fuel economy, better
safety systems, in car entertainment and driver aids, to name a few. To do this the
systems now utilise multiple control units to deal with the demand on the system.
These systems can be extremely varied but usually comprise a main control unit
connected to multiple other control units/modules fitted to individual systems like
the ABS system, satellite navigation, diesel pump, parking systems and many more.
PRECAUTIONS
• Some control units have technical restrictions due to the incorporation of
security systems which can limit the availability to the vehicle agent.
• Most control units without trade restriction can be tested.
• Control units can be very sensitive so great care must be taken when replacing
or working with them or vehicle electrical systems.
• Some control units will require coding to the vehicle once fitted.
• Some control units require a continuous power source while undergoing
diagnostic tests.
Suspension
SPRING BREAK
Automotive coil springs are one of the most central and dynamic components
of a vehicle’s suspension system; constantly working to absorb shocks, keep
the wheels in contact with the road and deal with uneven road surfaces. It is
therefore no surprise that after many millions of cycles, even the best made
springs will become tired and begin to sag; vehicle ride height will drop and
may become uneven, and eventual breakage is likely.
There are several reasons for spring failure, and Lesjöfors take various steps
to combat these to ensure the longest possible service life.
Surface and inner defects can exist in lower quality spring wire material. This
reduces performance by lowering spring fatigue strength and significantly
increasing the risk of breakage. Although almost all melting plants today can
produce steel with the specified chemical analysis of ‘spring steel’, only a
few mills are able to achieve the surface & wire quality necessary for modern
suspension springs with high stress levels.
• Lesjöfors only use high-grade, specialist ‘spring steel’ from selected mills
worldwide.
When springs are cold coiled, as many suspension springs are, negative internal
stresses are introduced. These must be removed by heat treatment or the
chance of failure (breakage) is increased significantly.
• Lesjöfors remove these negative internal stresses through a controlled
stress relieving heat treatment process after cold coiling. Following this,
it is important to introduce and control the level of positive residual stress
in the spring, as this will reduce shear stress during compression. The
controlled use of shot peening and presetting ensure high positive residual
stress levels within the spring and consequently a reduced risk of breakage
during use.
Some manufacturers use spring wire which tapers towards each end. This
generally produces a weight saving, but the risk of premature spring failure is
increased since the level of stress increases.
SHOCKING NEWS MAKE A WISH THE
14 :: INDEPENDENT
In independent tests, it was found that a car
fitted with 50% worn shocks could have a
braking distance up to 6 metres longer than the
same vehicle fitted with 100% efficient shocks,
despite its ESP and ABS systems. This research
also demonstrated that the same car with worn
shocks was more difficult to control in a collision
avoidance manoeuvre, thereby extending the risk
to car occupants and other road users.
A regular shock absorber check can be a
life-saver and these tests show that even drivers
of cars fitted with the latest technology need to be
aware of the dangers that worn shocks represent,
particularly if they cover a lot of miles.
The demands on certain commodities within the steering
family are much higher than others. Products such as
wishbones, link stabilisers and aluminium parts continue
to have high replacement rates. The Delphi range of
wishbones are all supplied with bushes and ball joints
where required.
Wishbones account for more than 50% of steering
and suspension replacement parts on vehicles. Faulty
wishbones are one of the main reasons for MOT failures
or excessive tyre wear.
There are some misconceptions th
Exclusive News for the Independent Garage Trade
A fitting point
When a suspension component (shock absorber, wishbone or spring) fails, drivers often
request that only the defective part be replaced – usually to save money.
Unfortunately, aside from being a false economy, this could also cause multiple severe
safety risks, such as:
• Less Responsive Steering • Less Secure Road Holding
• Increased Braking Distance • Increased Tyre Wear
According to the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), around 15% of all defects
discovered during an MOT are suspension related and about 12% of vehicles fail the test
due to a suspension problem.
Upon replacing a defective suspension component, it is imperative to replace an axle set
together, as failure to do so will most certainly result in the problems mentioned above,
but will also give an uneven and potentially unsafe ride as well as uneven tyre wear. These
components degrade at around the same rate during normal use, meaning that when one
fails, the other will most likely not be far behind. Springs also affect the ride height of the
vehicle, so will also cause a safety issue if not replaced as a matching pair.
The customer will also benefit from replacing all related components together, as this will
ultimately save them money – the labour time would be quadrupled if shocks, springs,
mountings and wishbones were all replaced on separate occasions.
REVIEW OF 2011
16 :: INDEPENDENT
Having launched the ebeepbeep consumer
website in 2010, we kicked off our retail
marketing activity by sponsoring League 2
team, Aldershot Town FC. The club had quite a
successful stint and the ebeepbeep advertising
even got picked up by the tv cameras a couple
of times. The start of the 2011/12 season saw
the sponsorship renewed, this time the club
reached the fourth round of the Carling Cup
and receive amazing coverage when they
got to play Manchester United.
Supporting local communities is very important
to us at Camberley Auto Factors, so in addition to
the Salisbury radio broadcast, our staff organised,
sponsored and took part in many fund raising activities
over the course of the year. These included an ‘Army
Day’ at Farnborough, a local college race team and
two BEN rallies, the second of which set off from our
Farnborough Head Office. Our fellow Parts Alliance
members do similar activities around the country and,
in September, we all joined together at the Parts Aid
event to present cheques to Help for Heroes and BEN.
AT THE START:
Having just been through the
coldest December on record,
the start of 2011 saw its own
challenge, with the VAT rate
increasing to 20%. Although
making life more difficult for
consumers, it did have the benefit
of making main dealer prices look
even more uncompetitive than
those of independent garages.
Early in the summer, we heard the worrying news
that the government was planning on reducing the
frequency of the MOT test. Instead of the current
3 years before the first test and annual testing
thereafter, the government has proposed to bring us
in line with Europe and leave it 4 years before the
first test, then every 2 years. This will have serious
implications, not just for our industry, but also for road
safety. We would urge all our customers to support
the ProMOTe campaign aimed at blocking this change
by visiting the website at www.pro-mote.org.uk
As Autumn arrived, the usual colder weather
failed to materialise, instead making way for
an Indian summer. Our ‘CAF on Tour’ events
returned to help more customers develop
their businesses. This was closely followed
by the annual tool sale event at Farnborough.
Finally, the MechanEx trade show took place
in November with a record turnout. The CAF
branding was hard to miss and we hope
those of you who attended found the show
interesting and informative.
Tougher trading conditions normally mean that
companies reduce their activities, but Camberley
Auto Factors kicked off the year by launching
a new braking programme. The addition of
ATE to our line-up has allowed us to have a
comprehensive range of braking products to suit
all needs. By February, we had also introduced
the Hofmann range of tyre changing equipment,
allowing garages to capitalise on this extra
business opportunity rather than passing on
work to their competitors.
Exclusive News for the Independent Garage Trade
Keeping up to date with the latest product news, information
and developments in the aftermarket is essential for any
independent garage, so we produced various publications
such as the Ice Station air conditioning brochure and
Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems booklet.
Our Workshop Solutions events returned with the title
of ‘CAF on Tour’, taking our suppliers to various venues
and giving you the chance to learn about Apprenticeships,
Hybrid Vehicles and Stratified Fuel Injection. A series of
Profit Clinics also took place at other venues, with small
groups of customers learning all about business efficiency
from motor industry expert, Mike Owen.
Over the course of the year, we continued to expand our
product ranges, by adding new items such as Electronic
Parking Brake Calipers and Valvoline Oil, through to
reprofiling existing stock, where we cleanse and add to
existing product lines to ensure we have the most popular
parts available on the shelf. Some of our less well known
items can be seen on the product pages of this publication,
plus in September, we introduced our new product demo
van. This has already been a great success, taking the
latest products around to various customers
as well as attending various shows and events.
REVIEW OF 2011
We held three trade shows over the year, with
Farnborough up first. This event took place
on a lovely spring evening and gave customers
the chance to get a ‘behind the scenes’ look at
our largest site. Salisbury followed suit with a
technical evening, opening their doors ahead of a
live radio broadcast the next day. This took place
on local station Spire FM, all in aid of the local
district hospital. Finally, having moved to larger
premises in late 2010, Worthing welcomed people
along for a chance to see their new building.
How to identify...
wheel bearing quality issues:
Take a look at the two bearings in the picture (fig-1), can you tell
the difference? Well the FAG bearings technical team can help you
identify the sometimes not so obvious details on wheel bearings.
As you can see from the images there are some visual differences
between the two parts. The FAG version is supplied with a press
fitment cap to prevent damage to the bearing during fitment. It has
plastic grease protectors covering the bearing to ensure the grease
does not escape or become contaminated (fig-2). The copied version
does not have these features and the grease is exposed which would
greatly increase the risk of contamination.
Fig-1 Fig-2
Material testing of the copied bearing revealed some interesting facts;
the dimensions, especially on the inner race, showed considerable
metal content variations which would have a negative effect on the
resistance and lifetime of the bearing. The rollers inside the bearing
when inspected were found to have been constructed from a very
poor quality metal and are therefore not appropriate for wheel bearing
applications. There were also insufficient roller and raceway profiles,
which when combined with a deficient geometry of the inner ring lip
would also lead to a premature failure.
Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket (UK) Ltd is warning garages
not to fit sub-standard copied wheel bearings. The supplier of
genuine OE FAG wheel bearings says they are one of the most safety
critical components fitted to vehicles today, but that there are a number
of inferior products on the market.
The company works hard to keep up-to-date with its manufacturing specifications
to ensure its original equipment and aftermarket FAG wheel bearing components
are of the highest quality.
During the manufacturing process it rigorously checks and tests components to ensure
that the highest standards are maintained, and also examines parts from competitors so
that it can compare quality. The company says in many ways it has become a victim of its
own success and it is starting to see more inferior copied versions of these components from
other manufacturers entering the market.
Bearings Bearings
Exclusive News for the Independent Garage Trade
Stopping contamination (fig-3) is one of the most important factors to
remember with bearings. This is vitally important as by far the number
one cause of premature bearing failure is contaminated bearing
grease.
To make matters worse, the grease used in the copied bearing (fig-4)
only provided sufficient lubrication up to 185°C when tested, which
could cause a major problem because vehicles with disc brakes
would soon exceed this temperature under normal braking conditions.
Essentially, the bearing would have no lubrication which would cause
premature wear or at worst complete failure of the bearing itself.
Fig-3 Fig-4 Fig-5
Fig-6 Fig-7
Choose OE quality
The FAG technical team urges workshops to always choose OE-quality
bearings, rather than copied products. After all, why risk your reputation
by fitting inferior copied products when you could use an OE quality
product, safe in the knowledge that it has been manufactured to the
highest possible standards.
Technical Support
Schaeffler – which also supplies LuK clutches and INA tensioner sets
When both bearings are opened up, the differences continue. The
most obvious is the size of the rollers on the FAG bearing compared to
the copied version (fig-5). The FAG rollers are much more substantial.
The larger rollers would enable the FAG bearing to withstand much
more weight and pressure than the copied version. Look at the
comparison for yourself in the pictures, which one would you rather
fit? (fig-6,7)
SUPPLIER FOCUS
MANN-FILTERS
When the inner values are the ones that matter
With filters, as with so many other things, it is the inner values that matter most. Quality differences can
no longer be recognised or identified at first glance. It is therefore all the more important that you should
be given a defined level of quality right from the moment of choosing a certain brand.
With MANN-FILTER you will always have the same quality as is supplied to the automotive manufacturers
themselves. To ensure that this situation continues indefinitely MANN-FILTER submits to regular certification
audits carried out by an independent agency in compliance with the international standard TS 16949 as
well as the OEM customer standards QS 9000 & VDA 6.1.
AIR FILTERS
RELIABLE PROTECTION
Clean intake air is essential for problem-free e driving. Howeve However, ver,
pollutants such as particles, soot etc., are taken in with the air.
The result: dirt particles get into the combustion chamber, causing
grooves and premature wear on the engine. Electronic components,
such as sensors which are located between the intake and the
combustion chamber, are impaired in their function or even
destroyed.
Modern MANN-FILTER filter media for air filters demonstrate
particularly high mechanical stability. They filter the intake air
efficiently and reliably. This allows optimum composition of the
air/fuel mix and ensures consistent engine performance.
MANN-FILTER air filters have numerous important functions. They
filter destructive particles such as dust, pollen, sand, soot or even
drops of water out of the intake air. They ensure that only clean air
gets into the combustion chamber. MANN-FILTER air filters also
prevent damage caused in various ways to electronic components
such as highly delicate sensors (hot-film air flow meters). MANN-
FILTER air filters have other important functions: they lessen
intake noise, control temperature regulation and seal off adjacent
components. MANN-FILTER is setting new standards for the air
filtration of tomorrow with its air filter solutions.
OIL O FILTERS
SAFE S PROTECTION
FROM
£2.05
Engine E oil lubricates all the moving and functional tional parts in the engine engine.
As a result of combustion, particles of dirt and combustion residue
such as soot escape into the engine oil. They contaminate the oil and
make it more viscous. This means that the oil supply is not adequate
and protection from corrosion can no longer be ensured. As a result,
engine performance is impaired and fuel consumption increases.
In the worst case, the engine could be damaged.
Increasing engine performance, and at the same time reducing fuel
consumption, places high demands on engine building. Only clean oil
can ensure that engine performance remains consistent. This is where
the full effectiveness of MANN-FILTER oil filters are really brought to
bear.
MANN-FILTER oil filters reliably purify oils from dirt and solid particles
such as dust, abraded metal, carbon deposits, soot particles etc.
They are used with engine oil, hydraulic oil and gear oil.
FUEL FILTERS
OPTIMUM STANDARD THROUGH UGH
MODERN INJECTION EQUIPMENT ENT
The basic requirement for problem-free motoring is clean fuel. The
fuel arrives in the injection system or in the carburettor via the fuel
pump. Particularly in modern injection systems, dirt particles in the fuel
cause increased wear. The water content in the fuel can also cause
serious damage as a result of corrosion. At worst, this can result in
the complete failure of the injection system, bringing the vehicle to a
standstill. Wear on the injection system or on the carburettor results in
a considerable increase in fuel consumption and in impaired engine
performance.
Modern injection systems such as common rail or pump injector need
innovative solutions, tailored to the new design. MANN-FILTER rises
to the challenge of all the demands made by the automotive industry
with a fuel filter range of the highest quality.
CABIN FILTERS
CLEAN AIR INSIDE VEHICLES
FROM
79 79p
The air in urban areas contains large quantities of dust, pollen, soot and
other particles, as well as gases which are harmful to health. More and
more people are suffering from allergies and are increasingly aware of
the subject of air conditioning and cabin filters.
As a result, more vehicles leave the factory already fitted with cabin filters.
In Germany, 10,000 vehicles per day are fitted with cabin filters as
standard, and this trend is increasing. Original MANN-FILTER cabin
filters are very highly regarded by the vehicle manufacturers.
MANN-FILTER cabin filters remove virtually all pollen and other
unwanted particles, as well as harmful gases (adsotop ® es of dust, pollen, soot and
combi-filters)
from the air, thus ensuring a better atmosphere inside the vehicle.
This is particularly important for people suffering from allergies,
asthma, and for children.
