for her
choice
HMV Sound Choice takes the guesswork out of exploring new music. Every month, we single
out a selection of great albums for a little extra attention, and this month, it’s all about our
favourite releases of the last year. These are the best of the best, and we stand behind
every single one.
JET
Shine On
Shine On is a hard rock album of
epic proportions. From the snaking
bass lines and twin guitar assault to
the vocal howl that will flatten
mountains and open bedroom
doors, Shine On is a sonic boom ecstasy. Check out the
Big Star-influenced roar of “Stand Up” and the Curtis
Mayfield-infused shuffle of the first single “Put Your
Money Where Your Mouth Is”.
BILLY TALENT
II
After coming out of nowhere to land
atop the Canadian screamo/punk
scene with their eponymous 2003
debut, Billy Talent return to reclaim top
spot. Once again fuelled by singer Ben
Kowalewicz's potent vocals, II finds the quartet building on
their already impressive singles track record with the brazen
opener “Devil In A Midnight Mass” and the call-to-arms of
“Red Flag”. Elsewhere, cuts like “Fallen Leaves” and
“Surrender” deliver some of the album's tightest melodies.
ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA
Rock Star Supernova
Fresh from the success of the first
“Rockstar” series that saw Canada's
J.D. Fortune join Aussie rockers
INXS, here's take two. Rock Star
Supernova unites some of hard
rock's heaviest hitters - Gilby Clarke (ex-Guns'n'Roses),
Tommy Lee (Mötley Crüe) and Jason Newstead (ex-
Metallica) and an as-yet-unnamed vocalist - for a rough
and raucous rock'n'roll ride.
PANIC! AT THE DISCO
A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out
With A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, Panic!
At the Disco’s genre-obliterating stunner
of a debut, the Las Vegas foursome aims
for the narrowest of niche markets - emo
kids who just wanna dance - and
develops a daring fusion of punk and disco. Backed by funky
beats, slippery synths and roaring guitars, frontman Brendon
Urie peppers P!ATD's ferocious dance-punk with clever
couplets and an elastic voice equally comfortable tackling
screamo howlers and music hall sass.
THREE DAYS GRACE
One-X
This Toronto-based quartet has
blasted onto the charts with One X
and its lead-off single, “Animal I
Have Become”. No surprise, given
the rapturous response the band's
debut album, featuring “I Hate Everything About You”,
received. One-X ups the alt-metal ante, packing even
more of a wallop than its predecessor.
FOO FIGHTERS
Skin and Bones
The drummer jokes end here. After
his former band Nirvana’s tragic end
(brought about by the suicide of
leader Kurt Cobain), drummer Dave
Grohl recorded a solo album under
the banner Foo Fighters, later forming the full-fledged
band, which has become one of alt-rock's biggest
forces. This retrospective offers the best of the Foos -
thus far. Includes the blistering hit singles “The Best of
Me” and “This Is a Call”.
Let’s face it, with the holiday season fast approaching, this is no time for heavy
thinking. With so many great albums released over the past twelve months and more
coming out every week, it’s pretty easy to miss something. So why strain your brain?
Leave the thinking to HMV Sound Choice!
SHAKIRA
Oral Fixation Volume 2
Throaty Columbian rump-shaker
Shakira concludes her two-disc, bestof-both-worlds
recording turn with the
edgier Oral Fixation Volume 2, the set's
all-English second installment.
Though initially designed to expose the singers repressed
inner rock star, a thirteenth-hour injection of irresistible
reggaeton rhythms in the Wyclef-crafted “Hips Don't Lie” is
what's really had an entire hemisphere looking to Shakira for
an infectious dose of truth.
KT TUNSTALL
Eye to the Telescope
Armed with equal measures of sass
and sensitivity, Scottish singersongwriter
KT Tunstall's debut feels
like a timeless favourite from the
very first listen. The standout lead
single “Other Side of the World” sets the album's toughyet-tender
tone early. Tunstall’s biting, open-hearted
lyrics call to mind a more rock-oriented Rickie Lee
Jones; loads of clever lines reveal a talented young
songwriter who already sounds like a seasoned pro.
MADONNA
Confessions on a Dancefloor
Mixing the high-energy pure pop of
her early hits such as “Holiday” and
“Lucky Star” with the ‘future disco’
sheen of modern Madonna classics
such as “Ray Of Light” and “Music”,
the latest album from Madonna is still going strong,
serving as a deliriously dynamic reminder that when it
comes to getting us ‘into the groove,’ no one can do it
quite like Madge. Co-conspirators include Mirwais, Joe
Henry and producer/ mixer/ DJ Stuart Price.
CORINNE BAILEY RAE
Corinne Bailey Rae
With comparisons to Billie Holiday
and more soulful Norah Jones
abounding, blissful Brit
singer/songwriter Corinne Bailey
Rae exudes her own unique style on
her eponymous debut set. Flowing over a rich, classic
soul tapestry that belies her relative youth, Rae caresses
each song with her slight rasp and soothing melodies on
a disc that's surely just the beginning of something truly
special.
BE GOOD TANYAS
Hello Love
The Vancouver-based Be Good
Tanyas have indeed found success
with the deep-rooted integrity and
honesty with which they approach
their music - an intoxicating mix of
old-time country and blues, folk, bluegrass and gospel.
The new album, Hello Love, contains originals like the
gorgeous lead-off track “Human Thing”, the rollicking,
groove-based “Ootischenia” and the bittersweet “Song
For R”.
SHAYE
Lake of Fire
Lake of Fire is the long anticipated new
album from Canada's top female trio.
The three songstresses, Kim
Stockwood, Damhnait Doyle and Tara
Maclean, have crafted a masterful
recording, both engaging and energetic, and Shaye has
come into its own as one powerful musical entity with three
distinct elements. Covering songs by Ron Sexsmith, the
Waterboys and Van Morrison and led by first single “Lake of
Fire”, the new record is a Canadian classic in the making.

famous 16 | november 2006
Did you see the last Bond
film? You’re trying to recall
which one that was, right?
Something with “die” in the title
…or was it “eye”? Tomorrow Never
Dies? No. Die Another Day, that’s
it, Die Another Day.
At the risk of infuriating
Bond fans I’ve gotta say that the
last few James Bond films have
just bled into one for me. That’s
not really fair. Truth is, I didn’t
even see most of Die Another Day.
Couldn’t get past the half-hour
point. I remember James Bond
was somewhere really cold, there
was lots of ice, and maybe a plane, and there was action, lots of action,
really boring action.
And it’s not just me. In “Building a Strong Bond,” page 30, producer
Micheal G. Wilson admits the series was going off the rails. “We started
getting too high in the sky — outer space, invisible cars — the
technology began to overwhelm the story and the characters,” Wilson
told writer David Giammarco during an interview on the film’s
Bahamas set. That’s a surprisingly honest thing for a producer to say,
especially since the movie made a ton of money. I’d like to think it shows
quality is at least as important as box office for the heirs to this franchise.
So the producers decided to bring the whole thing down to a more
human level for Casino Royale, in part by casting the very human-looking
Daniel Craig (also interviewed for this piece) as the new James Bond.
Gone is the perfect hair and the too-suave attitude, replaced by good
old-fashioned manliness. Plus, for the first time in a long time, a Bond
film will actually be based on a book written by James Bond creator,
Ian Fleming. In fact, Casino Royale was Fleming’s first book about
Bond, so we get to see him take his initial steps as Agent 007. For this,
I will return.
On page 26 you’ll find “Laugh Until You Cry,” my interview with
Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy about their latest collaboration,
For Your Consideration. Just as funny as their previous movies
(Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show and A Mighty Wind), this one is
unique in one very important way — it’s not a mockumentary. Then
again, they say neither were those other films.
Read the story to find out why.
And there are some great gift ideas in our
Early Bird Gift Guide, page 34. What’s it going to be,
the new PlayStation 3 or Nintendo’s Wii? Should
you pick a plasma TV or a Blu-ray DVD player?
How about a pair of sheepskin slippers or a
pretty little necklace? Still not quite right?
Candles, ornaments and Holiday decorations
always make a nice gift. —MARNI WEISZ
Marc-André
Grondin: A beautiful beast I BY CHRISTOPHER DIRADDO
It’s been more than two years
since shooting wrapped on
the homegrown Frenchlanguage
blockbuster C.R.A.Z.Y.
— a film that went on to snag a
record number of awards and
nominations, including 10
Genies, and became one of
Quebec’s biggest box-office
draws of all time — and
Marc-André Grondin is eager to
say goodbye to Zac Beaulieu,
the role that made this 22-yearold
actor a Canadian star.
“I know that this role will
follow me for the rest of my life.
But it has been a year that I
have been promoting
[C.R.A.Z.Y.] and I am no longer
able to talk about it with such
passion,” he confides. “It is
time for me to move on.”
famous 18 | november 2006
It’s Grondin’s new projects
that excite him these days,
including this month’s
La Belle bête.
Based on Quebec author
Marie-Claire Blais’ 1959
debut novel, La Belle bête
(the English version was
published as Mad Shadows), it
was adapted for the big screen
by director Karim Hussain
Trim: 10.5"
Safety: 0.25"
(Ascension). Grondin plays the
beautiful beast in question,
Patrice, a pretty, yet dim-witted,
young man who is worshipped
by his doting mother (Carole
Laure) and loathed by his smart
but unattractive sister (Caroline
Dhavernas). It’s a dark and
violent psychological drama
that builds to a horrifying
conclusion.
Initially, Grondin had trouble
understanding his character.
“A week before shooting I
freaked out. I couldn’t find
Patrice’s voice. I couldn’t get
him. Then I realized I needed
only to draw inspiration from
one thing, my dog,” he says,
chuckling. “Seriously, Patrice is
the dog in that family. In every
situation he reacts like an
animal. He gets beaten up but
always returns to his master.”
It’s definitely a change of
pace from his sensitive portrayal
of C.R.A.Z.Y.’s sexually
confused adolescent. So did he
choose this role on purpose?
“I try to apply the approach
of the band Radiohead to my
choice of scripts,” he says.
“Their first album was a big hit.
And what did they do to ensure
their second album wouldn’t be
a victim of comparison? They did
something completely different.”
Filming La Belle bête
required much of Grondin,
including being physically
abused. “It was rough,” he says.
“I didn’t leave this experience
without a scrape.”
The film also required some
nudity, which wasn’t a problem
for this Quebec heartthrob.
“For me to undress and show
some skin, when it is justified,
does not bother me. In this film
it symbolizes the purity and
vulnerability of the character.”
interview|CHRISTOPHER GUEST & EUGENE LEVY
Many of the most astonishing bigscreen
moments have been quiet
close-ups of characters’ sedate
faces that reveal storms of emotion raging
just beneath.
Glenn Close has one at the end of
Dangerous Liaisons as her shamed 18thcentury
temptress scrubs the makeup
from her face. Kevin Spacey’s corrupt
cop catches a glimpse of himself in the
mirror behind a bar in L.A. Confidential,
and you can see right through to his core.
And Catherine O’Hara has one about
halfway through For Your Consideration
when her aging actor thinks she just might
get an Oscar nomination for her turn in
a laughably bad indie drama.
It’s an odd place to find such a moment,
in the middle of Christopher Guest’s
latest over-the-top comedy. In the tradition
Laugh until you cry
Yes, For Your Consideration is pee-your-pants funny.
But Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy also want you to see
the tragedy behind the humour I BY MARNI WEISZ
of Guest’s other recent movies — Waiting
for Guffman, Best in Show and A Mighty
Wind — this one is crammed full of
painfully funny jokes from start to finish.
But in that one scene, as O’Hara stares
upward ever so slightly with hopeful,
vulnerable blue eyes, you don’t feel like
you’re watching a comedy at all.
“The important part of this story is
the emotional part,” says Guest — who
directed, co-wrote and stars in the film
— during a tandem interview with
Eugene Levy at the Toronto International
Film Festival. Levy, a Hamilton native
who now lives in Toronto and L.A.
co-wrote the script, as he did for Guest’s
last three movies, and also has a role.
Both look surprisingly conservative in
nearly identical dark blue blazers.
“We’ve been in this business a long time
and we’ve seen a lot of these bizarre
people, that’s the easy part,” continues
Guest. “The hard part is weaving the
somewhat tragic story through it, and
without that there’s no movie.”
Like all of Guest’s movies, For Your
Consideration is a mass ensemble, and
you’ll recognize most of the major players
from his past films. Much of the story
takes place on the set of the shlocky,
low-budget, 1940s-set movie within the
movie, Home for Purim. Written by a
couple of too-earnest playwrights
(Michael McKean and Bob Balaban),
Purim stars Marilyn Hack (O’Hara) and
equally past-his-prime Victor Allen Miller
(Harry Shearer) as the heads of a Jewish
family in the American South. When
their lesbian daughter (Parker Posey)
arrives home for the holiday with her
partner (Rachel Harris) it causes much
tsuris…sort of like Yiddish for angst.
of an actor directing himself in the
role of a director, Guest plays fuzzyhaired
filmmaker Jay Berman. Levy plays
Miller’s smarmy agent, Morley Orfkin.
But the pitiable atmosphere on the
Home for Purim set instantly transforms
when someone hears that an anonymous
blogger was on set and wrote that Hack’s
performance is Oscar-worthy. The tragedy
is that once the Oscar rumours start, no
matter how baseless they are, everyone
falls in love with the idea of being handed
the ultimate Hollywood validation.
“It’s the strongest form of comedy
when the audience has an emotional
connection to the characters as well,
otherwise it’s a sketch,” explains Levy.
“When the jokes stop, the movie stops.”
It’s surprising to see just how much
affection and sympathy Guest and Levy
have for these characters, all of whom are
ridiculous, and all of whom seem to get
skewered by the script. In fact, Guest
bristles when the word mockumentary is
used to describe his films. “I have never
made a mockumentary, but I’ve made
movies in a documentary style,” he says.
Which is a shock, because Guest’s
movies are the first to spring to mind
when one hears the word mockumentary.
“You’re not taking these people and
holding them up to ridicule,” says Levy,
“which I think is why the term mockumentary
is something that is not entirely
a word that sits well…. Guffman was not
mocking small town people, and Best in
Show was not mocking these people,
these are real people, we met these people.
These characters in the movie were based
on people we ran into while we were
doing the research for the movie.”
Perhaps their discomfort with the term
is one reason they decided not to make
For Your Consideration in the documentary
style. You don’t really notice it for the first
15 minutes because the jokes are firing at
a machine-gun pace, but then it occurs to
you, there are no asides to the camera,
no captions. This is pure narrative.
“We needed a change,” says Guest. “It
was tremendously difficult because when
you’re doing a documentary style, at any
point you can throw in an interview, you
can throw in a still of Eugene with his eyes
crossed.”
“Which we’ve done in every picture,”
adds Levy.
Like their past films, this one was largely
improvised. Guest and Levy create the
skeleton, but after that anything goes.
Early reports claimed the film was
▼
▼
famous 28 | november 2006
Victor Allen Miller (Harry Shearer) chats with agent
Morley Orfkin (Eugene Levy) in For Your Consideration
inspired by the experience Guest and
Levy went through in 2004, when the
McKean-penned song “A Kiss at the End
of the Rainbow,” from A Mighty Wind, was
nominated for Best Original Song. There
was even talk that Levy might get an
Oscar nod for his performance as Mitch,
the emotionally fragile former folk icon.
“Once you get into things like the
New York Film Critics’ Circle...and then
these lists come up, there you find
your name on the Top Ten people for
whatever,” recalls Levy. “And you love
these people for putting your name on a
list, and it means they like what you did,
but you know, how far is this going to go?
It is like a thing that’s pulling you along,
this thing you have no control over.”
Levy and O’Hara performed “A Kiss at
the End of the Rainbow” live at the Oscars,
and while that may have influenced
Levy’s work on this script, it was not the
inspiration for For Your Consideration.
“This started probably 20 years ago,”
says Guest. “In 1979 I was working on a
film, as an actor, and we were about three
weeks into shooting, and someone came
up to the director of photography and
said, ‘You better get your tuxedo ready.’
And I remember thinking, ‘What?! We
just started this thing, what are you talking
about?’ And I could see a change in this
guy. He’d suddenly become better in his
own mind. And he wasn’t nominated.”
No worries about that sort of torment
here in Canada. When asked whether the
Canadian film industry brews the same
level of unhealthy competition over the
Genies, Levy flatly responds, “No.”
Then after the laughter dies, he adds,
“I don’t think films are made in this country
where people go, ‘We’re getting a Genie,
I know it!’ I think the happiest moments are
when the financing comes through.”
Pouring a Stella Artois takes patience and a little skill with a knife. In other words, as the frothy head foams over the edge of the
chalice, your barman should gently cut it off. Doing so prevents the beer from going flat too quickly. It’s also just one of nine steps
As always, with anything fantastic that happens in your life,
there’s always a slight moment of anticlimax because you
don’t really believe it’s for real,” muses Daniel Craig, upon
whose shoulders sits a weight unmatched by any of his five
predecessors in the role that could either make or break his
career, and determine the fate of a 44-year screen phenomenon.
“And I have to admit that when I first got the phone call I was
in a complete state of disbelief...but after my third vodka martini
it started to sink in,” adds Craig with a smile. “And that’s the truth
— I went out and got very drunk on vodka martinis that night.”
To say Casino Royale is a giant gamble for all involved is a huge
understatement. The most successful film franchise in movie
history is forgoing the tried-and-true by going back to its roots.
Author Ian Fleming’s very first James Bond novel, Casino Royale
was published in 1953 and lays the groundwork for the man
who will become the world’s most famous and deadliest secret
agent. (The book has been filmed twice before, first as a
1953 episode of the TV show Climax! and then in 1967 as an
oddball spy spoof starring David Niven as Bond. But neither is
considered part of the Bond canon.)
“The way we look at it is it’s Classic Bond,” explains producer
Barbara Broccoli, daughter of legendary 007 producer
Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, between camera setups on the beaches
of Paradise Island. This is where Craig’s 007 will make his
entrance from sparkling waters, echoing Ursula Andress’
indelible introduction in Dr. No.
These sun-drenched Bahamian shores have been a tropical
touchstone throughout the series and are helping to lend a
Daniel Craig may not be
retro feel to this Bond rebirth. From the posh Café Martinique
and the electric Junkanoo parade made famous in 1965’s
Thunderball, to the spectacular — and sometimes treacherous
— coral reef dives, this opulant oasis has played host to five
previous Bond films and duly credits the 007 phenomenon with
elevating it to a jet-set destination in the 1960s.
In fact, original Bond Sean Connery became so enamoured
with the location after shooting Thunderball that he bought a
house here and has made it his primary residence ever since.
So, with much of Casino Royale having been lensed on soundstages
in Prague, these precious few weeks of location work have
provided cast and crew a much-needed breath of fresh air — and
an invaluable chance to reconnect with Bond history.
“Casino Royale is the definitive Bond story,” says Broccoli of
the only Bond novel that her father and producing partner
Harry Saltzman did not have the rights to produce (it was eventually
aquired by MGM after a lengthy court battle that ended
in 1999). “It was always an ambition of theirs to be able to make
the Casino Royale story but, sadly, they were never able to. So
when it finally became available to us, we leapt at the chance.
But this decision to reboot the series — which has grossed more
than $4-billion worldwide since Dr. No’s premiere in 1962 — is tricky
business. Casino Royale introduces James Bond before he holds
his license to kill, forgoing the trademark fantastical elements in
favour of a more realistic narrative and grittier characterizations,
all generously spiked with painful doses of tragedy and loss.
“Well, I think we’ve seen Bond films go through different
periods of change,” offers Michael G. Wilson, who produces the
Bond films with his stepsister Broccoli. “In the 1970s they got
bigger and bigger and more fantastic until we reached
Moonraker [1979] in outer space. And we realized that it was
going in the wrong direction and we brought it back to basics
with For Your Eyes Only [1981].
“And what we saw with Die Another
Day is that we got to the same point,”
continues Wilson. “We started getting
too high in the sky — outer space,
invisible cars — the technology began
to overwhelm the story and the characters.
We felt it was very important
to bring it back down to Earth.”
Though 007 has tangled with the
world’s worst villains and megalomaniacal
madmen over the past 44 years,
this time Bond’s greatest nemesis
has proven to be the media. Auric
Goldfinger and Blofeld were paper
tigers compared to the Fleet Street
tabloids, which have held Craig in
their crosshairs since it was anounced
the little-known, 38-year-old British
actor would replace Brosnan. Hounded
by criticism over a seeming lack of
necessary Bond attributes, Craig has
taken the attacks in stride.
“The truth is, if you’re not getting
bruised when you’re doing Bond,
you’re not doing it properly,” quips
Craig in true Bondian fashion, as he
sits down to chat at the posh One &
Only Ocean Club on the powderwhite
sand shores of Paradise Island.
“Quite honestly, I didn’t really
expect it,” admits the rugged, fairhaired
Craig, whose recent credits include Munich and The Jacket.
“I mean, I’ve been acting a while now and I’ve been in some big
movies before, but nothing on this level. And I’ve learned that
you can’t believe the good stuff and you can’t believe the bad
stuff. You kind of still take it in, but I’m really trying to ignore
it. I have to. I’m getting on with this.”
Faith in Craig’s abilities was strengthened shortly after filming
wrapped this summer, when Eon Productions announced that
it had signed Craig to another two Bond films, with the next one
due to start production in 2007.
Still, Craig confesses that the furor has upped the ante. “I’ve
been giving 110 percent from the very beginning, and maybe
after [the criticism] I was trying to give 115 percent, but I mean,
I’m giving everything I can,” he says.
“So once that’s all done and dusted,” he adds, “and once
we’ve got the movie out, people can say what they want. They
can criticize it then. But it’s really silly for anyone to criticize it
now because they haven’t seen it yet!”
Casino Royale begins in black and white before transitioning
“The truth is, if you’re not
getting bruised when you’re
doing Bond, you’re not doing
it properly,” says Craig
famous 32 | november 2006
to colour after Bond has made his first two kills and is elevated
to “00” status. “It’s a very tough story,” explains director
Martin Campbell (GoldenEye). “It’s very interesting that in the
book Bond finds violence very hard to take. When he has to do
two killings, one of them ends up becoming very ugly and
messy. It really affects him, even though he’s in denial about it.”
Agent 007’s first mission means facing down Le Chiffre
(Mads Mikkelsen), who is banker to the world’s terrorist
organizations. The Bond Girls include Italian stunner
Caterina Murino (Nowhere) as femme fatale Solange and
French beauty Eva Green (Kingdom of
Heaven) as Vesper Lynd, a representative
from the British Secret Service
sent to keep tabs on Bond.
“It’s a very special, unusual relationship
because Vesper is the only
woman who really gets to Bond’s
heart,” explains Green, relaxing
waterside between takes. “They really
fall in love. She has a big impact on
his life and he will later become the
Bond that we all know because of
that one relationship.”
Under Campbell’s direction, the
crew has been maximizing its time in
the Bahamas, which will also double
for Madagascar and Montenegro in
the film’s key action scenes.
The next day’s shoot on Coral
Harbour includes a spectacular foot
chase through the jungle and then
the alleyways of a shantytown, culminating
in a showdown 10 storeys up,
across narrow steel girders in an
abandoned construction site. Craig
works out for two hours every night
after shooting wraps, and watching
him in action, it’s obvious he has the
athletic prowess necessary for the role.
“You see how physical this job is
for me,” says Craig, catching his
breath between takes and wiping the
sweat from his forehead. “I got a personal trainer for this film,
which has been an absolute godsend.
“I knew I had to be in the best shape I could be,” he adds with
a grin, “otherwise I would never survive it…. Because at the end
of the day there isn’t any painting-it-in for this movie. These stunts
aren’t going to be helped by CGI...what you’re seeing is the
real thing. It’s the ‘wow’ factor. Audiences get it when the stunts
are done for real and people actually put their lives in danger.”
For Campbell, it’s all about making the 21st James Bond film
“the most realistic and emotionally involving” film of the series.
“I mean, how many control rooms can you blow up? How many
madmen can take over the world? How many space stations can
you take over,” asks Campbell with a shrug. “The argument is
simply we’ve taken Bond as far as we can with the formula...so
let’s see if we can shake it up a little bit.”
Anatomy
Grey’s
Sparkly or flat, grey is in bloom this season I BY LIZA HERZ
Some fashion designers have a
mean streak, often demonstrated in
runway shows rife with uglifying makeup
or shaved-off eyebrows. Does this make for
interesting magazine photos? Yes. Is it
attractive and wearable in real life? No.
Then there are the more insidious
versions of unwearability. This fall’s fashion
hurdle is learning how to wear the colour
grey. From Calvin Klein minimalism to
Marc Jacobs’ slouchy glamour, grey is (and
we really hate to say this) the new black.
The downside is grey’s tendency to make
the wearer look like a dead mouse. Grey
ensembles need texture and contrast.
Choose tone-on-tone shades of smoke and
On the makeup front, don’t think you
can get away with nothing more than a lick
GETTING INTO GEARS
The much-anticipated Gears of War is both gorgeous and hideous I BY SCOTT GARDNER
TONY HAWK’S PROJECT 8
XBOX 360, XBOX, PS3, PS2, PSP
The first entry in the Tony Hawk series built
specifically from the ground up for the new
cohort of consoles, Project 8 promises
extremely detailed animation and a truly
open environment of anonymous Midwest
’burbs, theme parks and factories.
It’s also the first game created in
developer Neversoft’s new motion-capture
studio, using high-res, high-megapixel
body scans of all the pro sk8rs to capture
their moves, and even facial expressions.
24 hours, and precipitating the
thermonuclear holocaust that
left 90 percent of the planet a
smoking ruin. Not a big picnic
and beach volleyball day, in
other words.
Here on Earth, however,
“Emergence Day” (or November
12th) marks the release of
Gears of War. Developed for
Microsoft by well-regarded
Epic Games (of the Unreal
The result: newly fluid and natural-looking
popshoveits, melloncollies and, hopefully,
bone-snapping slams.
UNTOLD LEGENDS:
DARK KINGDOM PS3
This third epic in Sony’s Untold Legends
series arrives just in time for all the newly
minted PS3 owners who can’t live without
a little fantasy, adventure and dungeon
crawling. This time, a mad king is terrorizing
his people and you — playing as a powerful
mage, a hearty warrior or a nimble (yet oddly
voluptuous) scout — must free the land.
Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom
famous 44 | november 2006
franchise), it’s arguably the
most-anticipated 360 game yet.
The buildup for this sci-fi and
horror-themed third-person
shooter is through the roof and
rapidly accelerating toward the
nonsense-osphere. Amazingly, it
just might be warranted.
Set some years after
Emergence, the game tells of a
few “Gears” — battle-scarred
soldiers, outgunned and
outnumbered by a relentless foe,
struggling to preserve humankind
in a post-apocalyptic landscape.
It’s gorgeous and hideous to
look at, from syrupy arcs of
arterial spray to the screaming
lizard-worm faces of the Locust.
Rejecting the standard
“run ’n’ gun” scenarios of most
shooters, Gears forces you to
creep and dive behind cover.
But the bad guys are fast, smart
and fully capable of flanking you
or just blowing up your shelter.
The key is working your squad
as a team. And although it’s often
promised, these AI characters
finally seem like the real thing.
As highly trained fighters, they
move intelligently, follow orders
and defend themselves.
And moms and dads:
Microsoft’s own promo material
stresses that Gears of War is
designed for gamers over 18.
Though, really, the cover pic of
a pockmarked grunt holding a
giant machine gun mounted with
a chainsaw bayonet should be
your first clue.
When you tire of smiting monsters,
casting spells and collecting gold, there are
extensive multiplayer and online features,
including deathmatch, “capture the flag”
and “last man standing” competitions.
STAR TREK: LEGACY
PC, XBOX 360
The TV series and movies may have run out
of dilithium crystals, but this space
combat game takes on Trek’s entire history.
As a Starfleet admiral, you’ll command
more than 60 ships over the decades,
including various models of the Enterprise.
The focus is real-time tactical combat
— from small-scale engagements to all-out
war — including Kirk’s disagreement with
Khan and Picard’s lovers’ quarrel with the
Borg. And for the first time, every single
lead Star Trek captain — William Shatner,
Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew
and Scott Bakula — will lend (or rather
sell) their voice talents.
NOVEMBER
2006
HOROSCOPE | BY DAN LIEBMAN
Scorpio
October 23 November 21
It’s a month to aim high. Go after major
jobs and goals, even if you think they’re
out of your league. Your judgment is keen,
with one exception. After the 16th, be
careful who you take into your confidence.
Watch out for late-month financial pitfalls.
Sagittarius
November 22 December 22
Early November sees you seeking out new
challenges — and you don’t have to look
far. Your home environment becomes
crowded with a flurry of surprise guests
who arrive after the 15th. Be careful who
you accept favours from. Many little
strings could be attached.
Capricorn
December 23 January 20
You’re tempted to back down from an
unpopular stand, but don’t cave in. Around
the 15th, people start to appreciate your
position. It’s a good month for creative
collaborations. And it’s not too early to drop
hints about what you’d like for the holidays.
Aquarius
January 21 February 19
Watch out for a tendency to pack too
much into a crowded life. The trick is to
discriminate when making choices. People
can’t usually put things past you, but you’re
a bit gullible this month. Intuition is strong
where personal relationships are involved.
1st: Lyle Lovett
2nd: k.d. lang
3rd: Dennis Miller
4th: Matthew McConaughey
5th: Tatum O’Neal
6th: Ethan Hawke
7th: Morgan Spurlock
8th: Tara Reid
9th: Nick Lachey
10th: Roy Scheider
11th: Leonardo DiCaprio
12th: David Schwimmer
13th: Whoopi Goldberg
14th: Harland Williams
15th: Sam Waterston
16th: Maggie Gyllenhaal
17th: Danny DeVito
18th: Owen Wilson
19th: Meg Ryan
20th: Bo Derek
Pisces
February 20 March 20
This is a month of reunions. You seem
to bump into people you knew long ago,
and a missing friend is finally located.
Powers of persuasion are strong after the
20th. Motivate yourself to get fit for the
holidays. And don’t postpone visiting a
sick or lonely friend.
Aries
March 21 April 20
You’re famous for your decisive nature.
Less known is your artistic side, which now
comes into play. Remember that Aries is
identified with music.
Taurus
April 21 May 22
November is good for long-term planning
and for facing important questions,
especially ones involving a friendship.
Keep up with developments in your field.
You’re easily influenced during the last
week of the month. Belated praise comes
your way by the 30th.
Gemini
May 23 June 21
Variety is the theme as you spend time
NOVEMBER BIRTHDAYS
21st: Goldie Hawn
22nd: Scarlett Johansson
23rd: Vincent Cassel
24th: Colin Hanks
25th: Christina Applegate
26th: Tina Turner
27th: Michael Vartan
28th: Ed Harris
29th: Kim Delaney
30th: Ben Stiller
famous 48 | november 2006
Sexy Scarlett Johansson
turns 22 this month
with a diverse crowd of people who range
from the very conservative to the highly
offbeat. A job offer is flattering, but don’t
accept till you know what you’re getting into.
Moneymaking ideas need more research.
Cancer
June 22 July 22
It’s a good month for genealogical
projects. Spend time getting to know your
family — not just distant cousins, but
some ancestors. In the world of the
present, be sure to remind others of
their responsibilities. And do a reality
check of your spending habits.
Leo
July 23 August 22
You relate well to people and make them
feel comfortable in difficult situations.
Try to help a relative become more
independent. Take a break from being a
show-off and let someone upstage you. An
early start on holiday shopping lets you
find an ideal gift — for yourself.
Virgo
August 23 September 22
You get flack for being detail-oriented, but
your attention to the little things earns
high praise and can land you a leadership
position. You’re also verbally gifted, and
this is a good time to take on projects or
enter contests that involve writing and
public speaking.
Libra
September 23 October 22
Take a greater interest in money matters,
especially your own financial planning. You
show a tremendous sense of style and win
rave reviews for projects involving design.
But you tend to be lazy in the health and
fitness area. It’s not the time to take a
holiday from the gym.
ABOUT THEIR
STARS BY SUSAN GRANGER
AMBITIONS
famous 50 | november 2006
LINDSAY LOHAN
JENNIFER LOPEZ “I’d like to become
the first female President of the United
States — it would be fascinating. The
first thing I would do is redecorate the
White House. It doesn’t look very cozy.”
SCARLETT JOHANSSON “I hope
someday they make a videogame of me.
At least I wouldn’t have cellulite then.”
GWYNETH PALTROW “Everything I
wanted to achieve, I achieved. I’m not one
of those people who keeps raising the bar.
Am I supposed to say I’m going to become
the biggest movie star that ever lived?
I don’t want to.”
BENJAMIN BRATT “I aspire to be a
great — not just good — father and
husband. That’s my number one priority,
and if I can get some good work in at the
same time, that’s terrific.”
TYRA BANKS “I want an empire like
Oprah’s. I may do it with a little more
cleavage, but I plan to get there.”
JOHNNY DEPP “I’ve never been very
ambitious in a sense where I went out and
chased after a project…. Everything just
kind of happened for me the way it
needed to happen.”
CAMERON DIAZ “My ambition as an
actress is to have fun. You realize that’s a
choice, actually — and I choose it.”
JADA PINKETT SMITH “I wanna
be a rock star. Who doesn’t? There’s
nothing like that immediate gratification.
I have a six-piece soul-fusion band,
Wicked Wisdom, and we did a CD, toured,
played Wembley Stadium in London.”
ANGELINA JOLIE “I’ve always wanted to
play Stanley Kowalski in a gay version of
A Streetcar Named Desire.”
“Singing. I have a five-album production deal
with Emilio Estefan Jr. and his production company.
I have always loved to sing and dance. I always
looked up to Ann-Margret, who could sing and
dance and act in movies. That’s my ambition.”
