For some people, things have
recently changed rather dramatically
in the care home world.
with images of somewhere that
is comfortable, welcoming and a
beautiful building in its own right.
Somewhere warm and safe and
luxurious but also stimulating
and vibrant.
Somewhere providing the security
of knowing that if the unforeseen
was to happen, a team of specialist
people dedicated to excellence and
to kindness would be on hand to
I’m holding my breath but, as I write, the rain seems to have abated - well it
hasn’t rained for 3 days! I read a letter in the Daily Telegraph from a reader asking if
during the hose pipe ban he would be allowed to use his hose pipe to drain away the great
pools of water in his garden! Anyway, I hope you all had a super Jubilee Weekend and my
fingers are firmly crossed for fine weather. By the way, many thanks for all your fantastic
What do you think about the Crest Nicholson/Waverley
BC plans for the East Street development? Do you want
to know more and contribute to the debate on the
June at 7.15 for 7.30pm at Farnham Maltings Great Hall.
Whether for or against, everyone is invited to go along
suspect it will be a lively evening! If you have any
A few week’s ago, I was invited to the launch of
LocalFoodSurrey.com, which is a new website
that has been set up to promote our local
independent food and drink businesses.
The idea was the brainwave of Tracy Carroll, who
is a great supporter of regional food, and runs a
small food and drink PR and marketing business.
She wanted to be able to help local food producers
to join together and help them promote
themselves and their products in a cost effective
way. Already a number of them have started
working with each other, which is really great.
The costs are very reasonable - businesses can
have a half page for six months for just £30, or a
full page for just £60 per month. Any business
interested can contact Tracy on 01883 744653 or
email tracy@marketplace.uk.com.
The website is also a great directory for local
consumers to use. They can see the food and
drink producers in their local communities, see
where their products are sold, check out farm
shops or farmer’s markets in the area, and also
search for restaurants, pubs or coffee shops.
The launch featured a lot of local food, and it was
all excellent. Sparkling wine from Iron Bridge
Vineyard in Merstham (another local vineyard!),
smoked fish from Tillingbourne Trout in Abinger,
mixed salad leaves from Secretts in Milford, and
cakes from Clare Crosbie, who is based in
Wormley, and used to write our cookery column.
All well worth seeking out.
~
I went to London to see One Man, Two Guvnors,
having failed to buy a ticket when James Cordon
was playing the lead role due to sheer demand.
With Cordon now on Broadway, and excellent
reviews for his replacement (and former
understudy) Owain Arthur, I tried again and
secured a seat. Could it be as good as the reviews?
Yes, absolutely! I re-read Charles Spencer’s review
in the Telegraph after seeing the play, and agreed
with every word. So do a Google search, and if you
like what he says, book it! It is now booking to
January 2013, so there is no excuse. It is on at the
Theatre Royal, Haymarket. Call 0845 481 1870 or
book online at www.onemantwoguvnors.com.
Editor
the skeleton document are open to comment,
5 amendment or dismissal and the actual Plan is
expected to eventually look very different.
Questions being asked at this stage include: What
sections should be added? What has been missed? And
how should the Plan be presented? Once the Town
Council has received these comments, it will then begin to
put together a Neighbourhood Plan and have extensive
and detailed discussions on the content and presentation
of that. Eventually, this Plan will become influential in
determining where housing can be built and also provide
a blueprint for green spaces and employment land in the
town. Everyone is encouraged to take part in the process
and they will be very pleased to involve anyone whose
knowledge and experience could help. For more
Farnham Maltings continues to present an eclectic lineup
of musical styles during the month of June. Do you
remember the sound of the 50’s? Well a seven piece band
called Oo-Bop-Sh’Bam performs on Friday 22nd June. Led
by charismatic vocalist Jackson Sloan (great name!), the
group play an irresistible mix of rock ‘n’ roll and rhythm
and blues. The doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.
Classical Music highlights include the return of Farnham
Amateur Operatic Society of a five-day run of their latest
production, ‘Half a Sixpence’. It’s a wonderful show and
the new script has extra songs added to the old favourites
like ‘Flash Bang Wallop’ and the great ‘What Should I
Feel’. The show runs from Tuesday 12th to Saturday 16th
June with performances starting at 7.30pm. There is an
additional matinee performance starting at 2.30pm on
Saturday 16th. Incidentally Farnham Amateur Operatic
Society has been producing high standard shows for 84
years and has been receiving excellent reviews. Tickets
are £12-£14 (18’s and under, students £7).
Presented in association with one of the UK’s top
comedy promoters, Off the Kerb, The Maltings’ regular
Stand-Up Comedy slot on the second Wednesday of the
month continues to draw the best emerging comedy
talent and this month’s line-up is no exception. Join
Steve Gribbin, formerly of acclaimed alternative comedy
duo Skint Video, the instantly likable Suzi Ruffell,
described as ‘definitely one to watch’ by Time Out, and
Mike Bubbins, who recently supported Rhod Gilbert’s
tour. It all happens on Wednesday 13th June at 8.30pm.
Inspired by the real life stories of those who signed up
for the Women’s Land Army in World War II, theatre
show Lilies on the Land performs at the Maltings on
Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th June. When the Lions
part, the theatre company behind the piece, wrote an
open letter to Saga Magazine asking ex-Women's Land
Army members if they might consider sending material
relating to their experience in the Land Army to help them
devise a play, the response was staggering. Some 150 or
more letters flowed in from women from all walks of life:
memories and recollections, anecdotes, poems, photos,
newspaper cuttings and wartime memorabilia.
Keeping
Chickens
WHEN I
started
keeping
chickens,
more than twenty years ago,
it was looked upon as an odd,
even bizarre, thing to do and
I was regarded as madly
eccentric! Today, thankfully,
keeping chickens as pets is an increasingly popular
hobby, one that people from all walks of life, young
and old, are realising they can do, with the result
that it is considered almost normal.
Chickens, if kept properly, are very rewarding – and
very addictive. Once you have had even one or two it
is difficult to live without them. Many people who
have lost their girls through old age or the dreaded
Mr Fox say it leaves a huge hole in their lives, so be
warned. A close friend who lost her chickens to a fox
told me she was so heartbroken she would leave it a
while before replacing them. I was surprised,
therefore, to see her a week later, box in hand,
desperate for some more. Without chickens, she
said, her garden had lost its soul, and the slugs had
taken over the flowerbeds, plus she had put on a
whole pound in weight as there were no girls to
share her morning biscuit with, and the phone bill
was enormous as there were no girls to talk to.
There are a few things to consider before you buy
your chickens: are there any local regulations, bylaws
or clauses in the deeds of your property that
restrict you from keeping poultry? Do you have the
time and resources? Chickens are cheap to look after
but the set-up cost can be relatively expensive and
they need protecting from predators. You need to be
able to spend time with your girls to benefit not just
from their eggs but also their enchanting characters.
Think about the noise. Chickens are relatively quiet,
providing you have no cockerels, and they are at
Suzie Baldwin offers her thoughts on an addictive
and rewarding past‐time
their noisiest when telling everybody they have laid
an egg. You will also need to provide a chicken sitter
for your girls when you are away on holiday. You
can normally persuade a neighbour or friend with
the bribe of letting them keep the lovely fresh eggs.
If you grow your own veg, chickens do a fabulous
job of not just fertilising your garden, but scratching
up weeds and generally cleaning it for you. They can
attract rodents but if you keep them clean and are
careful with their feed, you should be fine. If you are
a keen gardener and love your flowers, do not let the
chickens near them – their idea of a garden and
yours are totally different! I describe my girls as my
walking flowers.
If you feel that chickens are too much of a
responsibility for you, why not share them, and the
chores, with friends or neighbours? If you have a
large garden or field, you could provide the land.
More and more chicken syndicates are being set up,
some on allotments, others on private sites.
In my experience, if you choose to keep chickens
your life will change for the better. They are great
stress reducers and endlessly fascinating – you can
watch them for hours. It’s also lovely to come home
and be greeted by energetic clucks after a hard day
at work, plus many people find they make a new
network of friends who are happy to offer help and
advice and also buy their eggs. In addition, chickens
teach children responsibility and respect. They soon
learn that if they look after their chickens well they
will reap the rewards in eggs, in the satisfaction of a
job well done, and also, believe it or not, in the
acquisition of business skills. I have known several
children who have bought chickens and gone on to
earn money selling their eggs.
As with all animals there can be difficulties, but the
way you set up and treat your girls from day one
10 x R&A FARNHAM & VILLAGES June 2012
will determine how successful and enjoyable your
experience is. Most chicken problems can be
prevented and the more information you have to
hand before you start, the less stressful and scary it
will be – both for you and your chickens. In my
opinion, chickens are easier to keep than dogs – they
don’t need taking for walks – and they fit in very
well with most lifestyles. They will soon recognise
your voice and come running when they hear you,
and give you more than love – fresh eggs! With care,
and by following helpful tips based on years of
experience, you can have calm, manageable egg
layers eating out of your hand.
Keeping chickens has changed my life. I have made
many friends on the journey, both young and old,
and had the pleasure of collecting fresh eggs, which
is especially pleasurable on a cold day when they
make great hand warmers.
Five reasons to keep chickens
This extract is taken from Chickens:
The Essential Guide by Suzie Baldwin
(Kyle Books, £14.99) with
photography by Cristian Barnett
1 A supply of fresh, free‐range eggs – every day. Most
‘fresh’ eggs bought from a supermarket are at least three
weeks old. Research has also shown that organic, free‐
range eggs are much lower in cholesterol than eggs that
come from intensive production systems.
2 They are the very best way of instigating a sense of care
and responsibility in children. Children also love to collect
eggs and doing so helps to connect them with the reality of
how food is produced.
3 They are easy pets to look after and often pay for them‐
selves. There is also a breed out there to suit everyone and
almost all gardens.
4 For their entertainment value. Chickens are endlessly fas‐
cinating and simply being near them gladdens the heart
and lifts the spirits.
5 Chicken droppings are rich in nitrogen, phosphates and
potash and are a great fertiliser for the garden. Don’t,
though, put them directly on to your flowers as it will
scorch them. Chickens also love to eat slugs.
Five commonly asked questions
1 How many chickens do I need? Depending on the breed,
a hen will lay up to 300 eggs a year, so almost one a day. I
would recommend a minimum of three birds together be‐
cause any fewer will bicker and quarrel.
2 Do I need a cockerel? No. Chickens like to have a cockerel
around, but it doesn’t affect how they lay. If you live in a
built‐up area it’s probably kinder to your neighbours not to
have one.
3 Where should I buy my chickens from? Always buy from a
reputable supplier who is willing to give advice freely and
offer help.
4 How long do hens live? A happy, free‐range hen can live
for anything from five to ten years, depending on the
breed.
5 Do I need permission to keep chickens? If you are keeping
chickens just for family use, you are unlikely to encounter
any restrictions, but it is always advisable to check local
planning regulations.
Wild Food Sensations
Peter Sibley from Wild Harvest goes a foraging...
Perhaps it is because we have become used to
buying fruits and vegetables at any time of the year
that many of us no longer think so much about the
seasons. We can now buy strawberries at Christmas
if we want (and can afford them), and a range of
produce all the year round.
This would have been impossible for our ancestors,
who would have looked forward to the seasonal
produce of spring, summer and autumn, and the
preserved fruits and other plant products that
sustained them through winter. We have lost this
anticipation of pleasures to come and no longer
eagerly search out the first new produce of each
season. This is a shame and has also meant that we
no longer experience fresh produce at its best.
Fresh produce is still available at the correct seasons
of the year of course, but tends to be lost amongst all
of the imported produce.
This isn’t true of everyone. Those who grow their
own fruit and veg know when they ripen and
appreciate their superior flavour when picked
straight from the garden. Similarly, dedicated
foodies eagerly await the seasonal appearance of
their favourite foods, like asparagus and artichokes.
People who collect foods from the wild are just as
much in tune with the seasons and look forward to
the tastes provided by the different seasons.
Spring and summer are the best times for foraging
for plants to put into salads and to use as green
vegetables. As summer leads on to autumn our
attention turns to fruits, nuts and mushrooms.
A large number of our native wild plants are edible,
but some taste a lot better than others! Our
forebears ate a lot of wild plants, but some of their
preferences wouldn’t be ours today. An example is
Rock Samphire. Marsh Samphire is a well-known
accompaniment to fish and highly appreciated, but
its cousin Rock Samphire has a much stronger taste
– too strong for most people today, but it was so
popular in the 17th and 18th century that people
risked their lives to collect it from cliffs as the price
was so high.
Other tastes which have fallen out of favour are
Tansy, a very strong flavoured herb, previously used
in egg dishes such as omelettes and Bistort, which
was put into a kind of rissole and either boiled or
fried. Both are quite bitter. Each of these plants
may well have been eaten as much for their
medicinal qualities as their culinary ones. They tend
to have a purgative effect which was considered
cleansing. If you try these, bear this in mind!
Turning to much more pleasant tastes, try
Bittercress, Chickweed and Sorrel in salads.
Bittercress is a close relative of watercress and
tastes similar to it. Bittercress and Chickweed are
both common garden weeds; you can have the
satisfaction of clearing them from the garden and
putting them to good use at the same time. The
June 2012
same is true of Ground Elder, which can be used as a
vegetable. If you are unfortunate enough to have
this pernicious weed in your garden you can at least
eat it. All parts of the plant are edible when boiled,
and some say it is similar to spinach.
One of the very best plants to try is Hogweed. Don’t
let the name put you off, it’s delicious! Collect the
young shoots and fry them in butter. They have a
flavour gently reminiscent of aniseed. Its seashore
relative Alexanders is very similar. However, do not
confuse our native Hogweed with the introduced
Giant Hogweed, which is much larger and has
corrosive sap.
When it comes to flavour, do not neglect our native
herbs such as Cow Parsley and its northern cousin
Sweet Cicely; Thyme, Marjoram and Basil also grow
wild in Britain. Other native plants for flavouring
are Garlic Mustard or Jack-by-the Hedge, which has
a mild garlic flavour with a peppery edge so is good
in salads, and the true Wild Garlic or Ramsons which
is much stronger and so needs to be used more
sparingly. There is also another wild garlic called
Crow Garlic which is closely related to the familiar
cultivated garlic.
Some flowers are good to eat; Violets can be used in
salads or as a flavouring in puddings, such as rice
pudding. Wild Rose petals make an excellent
delicate flavouring for desserts. Try blending some
with cream to make an excellent Rose Petal Fool.
Elderflowers can be made into a fine white wine,
still or sparkling as you prefer. If sparkling, make
sure that the bottles are strong as the pressure can
build up to quite a high level. Elderflowers can also
be used to make a very refreshing cordial – great for
a picnic.
From left: Cow Parsley; Garlic Mustard; Wild Rose; Hogweed.
Here is a simple recipe for Elderflower Cordial:
Add about 2 litres of fresh elderflowers to 2 litres of
water. Add a sliced lemon, a large spoonful of white
wine vinegar or cider vinegar, and 250 grams of
sugar. Stir well and leave for 24 hours. Strain and
simmer the mixture for about twenty minutes, allow
to cool, then adjust the sweetness to taste. You will
probably need to add some sugar. Put into bottles or
other containers and chill in the fridge before use.
Whatever you choose to collect and eat, do
remember to wash it well before use, especially if
collected from public areas where people walk dogs!
Be sure of your identifications too, there are
relatively few seriously dangerous poisonous plants
in the UK, but quite a lot would give you a stomach
upset and some are superficially similar to edible
species.
For those interested in collecting foods from the
wild, experience gained from going on a course such
as the ones run by Wild Harvest is the best
preparation and getting a good guide book is also a
good idea. Recommended books are the
photographic guides by Roger Phillips: ‘Wild Food’;
‘Wild Flowers of Britain’; and ‘Mushrooms and other
Fungi of Great Britain and Europe’. The Wild Food
and Mushroom books are currently in print and
published by Pan Macmillan. The Wild Flower book
is out of print but available second-hand. Another
handy pocket-size guide is Richard Mabey’s ‘Food
for Free’, one of the Collins Gem Series.
Peter Sibley is an ecologist and naturalist of many years’ experience
and the co‐founder of Wild Harvest. Wild Harvest are running weekly
One Day Courses on Wild Food Foraging in Compton from the 29th
If someone invited you to go flying across the
countryside in an oversized laundry basket, you
would probably think they were bonkers. The
basket or gondola that hangs from underneath a hot
air balloon does look a little like it might be
something you can put your laundry in, but it’s
actually far more substantial than that. Usually made
from a mix of willow and rattan with suede-covered
edges, it is a strong material that is nice and flexible
for landing. Which is just as well, as they can
sometimes be a little unpredictable. I have lost count
of the number of times someone has told me they
have seen a balloon about to crash into trees when it
is actually just flying low and controlled with the
pilot making an approach to landing.
For several years in the 1980’s and 1990’s, I was a
professional balloon pilot, flying advertising
balloons for various companies and events including
champagne passenger rides over Kenya’s Masai
Mara game reserve. I was one of very few lady
balloon pilots in the UK, and the only one in Africa at
that time.
I just love being in the sky, floating like a cloud and
riding the winds. I have skydived from 12,000ft with
the Royal Marines, flown in a variety of aircraft and
scuba dived in the South Pacific in amazing waters,
but there is nothing quite like flying in a hot air
balloon drifting over the countryside and admiring
the view.
Up, up
and away
Dani Maimone on how she took
to the skies
I first fell in love with ballooning, or at least the idea
of it, after watching the Nimble bread adverts on TV
in the early 1970’s. Some years later I met a guy in a
village pub who was a hot air balloon pilot. As a
keen photography student, I offered to swap a flight
for some photographs of his balloon and, a few days
later at some unearthly hour in the morning, I was
airborne for my first ever flight, and became totally
hooked. I was desperate to learn to fly and become a
pilot. At the age of 21 in 1981, I passed my balloon
pilot’s licence, my driving licence, I graduated from
college and married the pilot’s brother! It was quite
a year. That was over thirty years ago now,
terrifying how time flies!
Modern ballooning is vastly different from the first
recorded manned flight of a lighter than air balloon
in Paris in 1783. This took place in a craft designed
by the Montgolfier brothers, Joseph and Étienne. It
was a cloth bag lined with paper and heated with
fire. Fortunately its passengers, Pilâtre de Rozier and
the Marquis Francois d’Arlandes, had a successful
flight and lived to tell the tale. I am pleased to say
that things have moved on a bit since then.
Today’s modern hot air balloons are made out of a
strong nylon and Dacron polyester woven together
which feels and looks like sail spinnaker. A
protective silicone and polyurethane layer are
added to the fabric to keep the heat and air in. The
area close to the flame is made of special fire
June 2012
esistant Nomex, and the basket is connected to the
balloon by strong steel wires and rigid poles.
Propane gas is pumped through steel coils to heat
the air inside the balloon and provide the lift
required for flight. At the top of the balloon is
something we call the parachute, a round piece of
fabric held in with Velcro. A special line is attached
to this, which we can pull on to let air out to speed
our descent, vital for landing.
Steering a balloon is not easy as there is no rudder,
steering wheel or magic way of doing so. Minimal
steerage can be gained by the use of turning vents
on the side of the balloon. In fact a skillful pilot can
steer the balloon using the winds at various heights
to drop a marker on to a target 15 km away. That’s
what competition flying is all about and why we call
it riding the winds. Although steering horizontally is
sometimes a challenge, the pilot has total control
over vertical ascent and descent. Digital flight
instruments tell the pilot how fast he or she is
travelling and in what direction. However, the art of
good old-fashioned map reading is essential for
knowing your location, even if you have a sat nav!
It generally takes four people including the pilot to
rig, inflate and prepare the balloon ready for flying.
You need one or two people on the ground following
behind in a vehicle to be there when the balloon
lands and to ask the local farmer permission for
entering the field to retrieve the balloon once it has
landed. It’s also useful for helping to pack it all away
again. It’s very much a team sport. Although
balloons come in all shapes and sizes, they are
generally teardrop and make fantastic advertising
billboards. Local lady pilot Alison Hougham, who
owns Packhouse Antiques in Farnham, has a balloon
sporting her company logo. On sunny summer
evenings it can often be seen floating over the
Surrey countryside.
It’s amazing how durable balloons can be, how high
you can fly them and where you can land in one. I
once landed five miles out at sea. It wasn’t
intentional. I had a film cameraman and BBC wildlife
presenter on board and we were filming seals for a
programme called The Really Wild Show for BBC
One. I had been misled by the Met office about the
sea breeze that would in theory carry us safely back
to land. The sea breeze was mysteriously absent
which meant that, with only thirty minutes before
the tide came in, I had no choice but to land on a sand
bank. Needless to say the cameraman was panicking
about his kit, and worryingly the presenter was
laughing manically. The coast guard didn’t respond
to my call so it was up to the BBC team in an
inflatable to rescue us. By the time we got everything
in the boat the water was up to our knees, so it was a
close call. We flew again the following day simulating
the return to land flight. I had a chuckle when I
watched the programme go out on air as it looked
like we had flown effortlessly back to land.
Ballooning is for everyone, the young and the old,
men and women, the intrepid and those who are
searching for a once in a lifetime experience. There
are also wheelchair friendly balloon baskets these
days, which is brilliant. The bird’s - eye view is a
balloon pilot’s privilege and patterns of nature can
reveal themselves in surprising ways, such as
archeological marks in the ground, trees, hedgerows
and lakes. In Africa, it is the perfect way to see the
wildlife. Quiet burners and a respectable altitude
above the animals provide a fantastic vantage point
from which to witness the magic of Africa.
So how does one get involved in ballooning? Well,
you can do what I did and search for a balloon pilot
in a pub. They are often found in pubs after a flight
discussing the event, or you can contact the British
Balloon and Airship Club (BBAC). The BBAC will tell
you where you can find your nearest balloon club,
how you can get involved, qualify as a pilot and
everything else you need to know about ballooning
in the UK. It will also have lists of events taking place
throughout the country and provide you with the
opportunity to join and subscribe to the brilliant
club magazine, Aerostat.
Ballooning is a sport that is strictly regulated by the
Civil Aviation Authority, which therefore means you
need to take a set of exams as well as a certain
amount of flying hours with an instructor to get
qualified. For a private pilot’s licence you only need
16 hours but for a commercial licence and to fly
passengers you need at least 75 hours on type.
So, sell your car and buy a balloon! It won’t
necessarily get you to where you want to go but you
20 x R&A FARNHAM & VILLAGES
will have a very pleasant time getting there. I leave
you with the balloonists prayer and as we say in
ballooning… ‘soft landings’ to you all.
The balloonists prayer
The winds have welcomed you with softness
The sun has blessed you with its warm hands
You have flown so high and so well
That God has joined you in your laughter and
set you gently back into the loving arms of mother earth.
Keeping pets happy on holiday
Before taking your dog away from his usual
stomping ground make sure he’s been microchipped
and get him an identity disc with your mobile phone
number on it. That way if he does go astray in
unfamiliar territory, people will be able to get hold
of you.
Apart from starting the pet passport process, any
elderly pet or one with health problems should be
checked over by the vet before you travel… and
don’t forget to pack any medication he may need
during the trip.
Make sure vaccinations, flea and worming
treatments are up to date and that your pet
insurance covers the country you’ll be visiting. Also
check that your policy covers damage to property,
hotel rooms, etc.
If you’re travelling by car, use a car harness to stop
your dog jumping around and distracting you from
your driving. Alternatively, you could use a special
dog container to keep him safe and secure during
his journey. On a long trip it’s important to make
regular exercise stops – at least every two hours – so
don’t forget to take a supply of poop bags and a towel
in case it rains.
Keeping hydrated is very important for both you
and your dog, especially in the height of summer, so
carry a supply of drinking water and untippable
bowls for food and water.
Being in a strange environment can be stressful for
dogs, so if you have room take his usual bed, or at
least a blanket or rug that smells of home, and don’t
forget to take plenty of old towels or sheets to cover
furniture and clean muddy paws. If your dog has a
favourite toy take that as well – the more you do to
make him feel at home, the better.
If you’re going to the beach (check that dogs are
allowed) you might like to take a ball or flying disc
Pets and holidays
for playing fetch – it’s a great way of keeping your
dog active and it’s fun, too.
Although you might like to experiment with new and
unusual foods while you’re on holiday, your dog
definitely should not! Take enough of his usual food
to last the duration of your trip, even if you stay in
the UK you may not be able to buy his usual brand
locally, so don’t take any chances. Switching your
dog’s food can cause an upset stomach and that’s the
last thing you need when you’re away from home
and staying in holiday accommodation.
One final precaution, pack a lightweight cotton
bedspread to cover the hotel bed. That way, any dog
hairs or muddy paw marks travel back home with you
and you can book a return visit with a ‘clean’ conscience.
Travel to and from the UK with the family pet
In January the UK harmonised its pet movement
rules with the rest of the European Union, bringing
the UK’s Pet Travel Scheme into line with the most
recent science. The UK is still maintaining its high
level of protection against animal diseases and the
good news is that these changes have the potential
to save pet owners around £7 million in fees.
Forcing pets to spend six months in quarantine, a
practice dating from the 1800s, is no longer
necessary because of vastly improved rabies
vaccines and treatments. All pets will still need to be
vaccinated against rabies, but pets from the EU and
listed non-EU countries such as the USA and
Australia will no longer need a blood test and will
only have to wait 21 days before they travel.
Pets from unlisted, non-EU countries such as India,
Brazil and South Africa will be able to enter the UK if
they meet certain strict criteria to ensure they are
24 x R&A FARNHAM & VILLAGES June 2012
protected against rabies, including a blood test and a
three-month wait before they enter the UK.
The changes will ensure the risk of rabies coming to
the UK remains extremely low. It’s estimated that
the new rules mean there would be one case of
rabies in a pet in the UK once every 211 years, with
the possibility of a person dying from rabies
contracted from a pet once in every 21,000 years.
The UK and other tapeworm-free countries retain
tapeworm controls, with a requirement that animals be
treated between one and five days before returning to
the UK. However tick treatment for pet animals
returning to the UK will no longer be required. The
advice to all pet owners travelling abroad with their
animals is to discuss with their vets the use of
treatments, including those designed to control ticks as
part of good animal health practice.
Microchips re-unite pets and owners
In the UK nearly 1,000 pets go missing every day
and only a fraction of them are ever re-united with
their owners.
This June is National Microchipping Month; it aims
to promote the benefits of pet identification through
implanting a microchip the size of a grain of rice that
can’t be lost like a collar or tag. Details of both pet
and owner are stored with the chip’s unique number
on the Kennel Club’s Petlog database so that they
can be more easily re-united if they are found.
Jo Frost, Head Vet at Stocton Veterinary Centre in
Woodbridge Road, Guildford, points out: “Stray pets
are brought in to us on an almost daily basis by
concerned members of the public. It is
heartbreaking when a clearly well-loved pet has to
be re-homed with strangers simply because their
original owners can’t be traced.
“Microchipping greatly improves the chances of a
pet going back to its home and the inexpensive
procedure can be carried out on a wide variety of
pets including dogs, cats, rabbits, tortoises, horses,
reptiles and ferrets. The chip sits just under the skin
www.roundandaboutssh.co.uk
focus on pets
and is completely inactive, invisible, tamperproof
and doesn’t bother the pet at all. Insertion is a quick
and simple procedure, rather like an injection, and
can be carried out at a veterinary practice, rescue
centre or by an animal warden. These are also the
places where they have the equipment to scan
animals when they are found and identify their
owners from the information on the chip.”
popular the event is becoming. Word is clearly spreading!
Registration can be done via their website or by
includes a free place for a child cyclist. After completing
The annual ‘Round the Hogs Back’ cycle ride takes place
on Sunday 24th June. This 24 mile ride, part of National
Bike Week and also part of the Guildford Summer Festival,
has been a regular event over a number of years. Martin
Taplin, a local cyclist who will lead the ride, says, “The aim
of the ride is to explore unfamiliar parts of the area to the
west of Guildford using quiet rural roads and off-road
cycle paths and to encourage people, including
youngsters, who may be uncertain about going off on
their own out into the countryside. The ride will be led at
a gentle pace. The route is not hilly. If you feel you can
cycle 24 miles on a bike, this ride will be OK for you.” The
ride, which is a free event, starts promptly at 9.30am from
Guildford Borough Council Offices at Millmead. The ride
will return to Guildford by early to mid afternoon. The
route follows the cycle path through Shalford Park to
Peasmarsh and on to Binscombe, near Godalming. From
Compton the route follows part of the National Cycle
Route No. 22 (south of the Hogs Back) via Puttenham to
Runfold, and returns (north of the Hogs Back) along the
Christmas Pie Cycle Route (from Tongham to Park Barn).
They will then return into Guildford Town Centre through
the Surrey University Campus and finish along the recently
up-graded section of the River Wey towpath. About six
miles of the route uses tracks or bridleways, some of
which are stony or have uneven surfaces. All-terrain
(Mountain) bikes will be ideal but a conventional touring
bike will be fine. There will be a stop for coffee/soft drinks
at the Puttenham Camping Barn and a lunch stop at The
Cricketers Pub at Rydes Hill. For further details or
questions contact Martin Taplin on 01483 504926.
Farnham’s Neighbourhood Plan - Can you help?
Farnham’s Neighbourhood Plan will provide
a vision of how our town should be
developed over the next few decades. It is
being drawn up in consultation with the
local community and, once agreed, will guide
future planning decisions in the Farnham
area.
The Neighbourhood Plan will eventually be
able to determine where housing can be
built and provide a blueprint for green
spaces and employment land in the town,
although still needing to remain broadly
consistent with the Core Strategy being
prepared by Waverley Borough Council.
The Plan will also outline actions needed to
secure any future infrastructure investment
for those living and working in Farnham.
Preparation of the Plan was started recently
by the Town Council working with
residents, businesses and other local
stakeholders.
Everyone is encouraged to take part in the
process and Farnham Town Council would
be pleased to involve anyone whose
knowledge and experience could help at
this stage.
The preparation of the Neighbourhood Plan
will continue during 2012, leading up to a
formal consultation in 2013, and an
independent examination of the proposals.
If you like going on organised walks you may be
interested in an organization called ‘footloose’ that does
just that. Have a look at their website www.bfootloose.co.uk
for a comprehensive list of planned walks
Each month these will be updated for the next month – so
keep checking this website as changes to routes and
timings could possibly occur though they endeavour to
inform those who have already booked. You don’t have to
pre book a walk, you can just turn up but it certainly helps
with the planning of the day, the booking of the lunch if
you want it, etc. If you do have an idea which of the walks
you would like to join, email walks@b-footloose.co.uk or
text 07884 001910. Don’t worry though; you can always
cancel if you need to. Walks are charged for at different
rates and the following is included: A WGL trained walk
guide who is St John Ambulance First Aid trained and will
carry First Aid kit, tea, coffee and biscuits en route and
extra water. Lunch bookings can be made (when
applicable and requested) and a map of the route with
step-by-step instructions will be emailed to you for future
reference post walk. All walks will go ahead whatever the
weather, within reason and barring extreme conditions.
Well-behaved dogs are welcome; children too if they are
happy to be there with you! Difficulty ratings are between
1 and 5 with 1 being flat, easy walking/short route to 5
being arduous climbs and uneven ground/longer route.
One walk in June that catches my eye takes place on
Thursday 28th June and is a walk around historic Ebernoe
With excitement building for the biggest sporting event
ever to be held in the UK, April saw the launch of
Community Games, a way for communities across Surrey
to come together to stage their own local event and feel
part of the London 2012 Olympics. Community Games
are run by, and for, local communities (a street, estate,
faith group, school, residents association, business, village
or simply groups of like-minded people), getting to know
each other better through organising and taking part in
their own local sporting and cultural event. “Community
Games has achieved great success in the West Midlands
over the last 3 years and it is now being rolled out across
England”, explained programme ambassador and former
Olympic athlete, David Moorcroft OBE. “With events
already being planned in Surrey’s towns and villages
including Godalming, Farnham, Staines and Redhill why
not help get your community inspired?” Local groups can
access the Community Games tool kit containing a wealth
of valuable information and tips for organising an event
(large or small) plus a range of other free resources
including t-shirts, bunting, bespoke posters and postcards
I know it’s still a couple of months away but it’s time to
start thinking of the Wings and Wheels show which takes
place on Sunday 26th and Monday 27th August at
Dunsfold Park near Guildford. This year the RAF Tornado
GR4 display is one of a number of new additions to the
phenomenal five hour aviation lineup. Not seen at this
airshow before, the new RAF Tornado display will perform
an astonishing and intense simulated attack on the airfield.
Apparently it’s guaranteed to blow your mind! It’s not too
early to book tickets which if booked in advance, cost £18
for adults and £40 for a family (two adults and three
children aged 5 to 15). It’s £5 for children aged between 5
and 15 and under 5’s are free. For more information you can
visit www.wingsandwheels.net or to book tickets call 08712
charities that will benefit are the Brooklands Museum Trust,
Cranleigh Village Hospital Trust, Help for Heroes and Surrey
La Luna Godalming
La Luna in Godalming has been in
the news recently. Well, that is to say
that a review appeared in The Daily
Telegraph a few weeks ago which
was not exactly complimentary,
albeit for some rather spurious
reasons. This unleashed a barrage of
comments on the Telegraph website,
the vast majority of which poured
lashings of opprobrium on what was
deemed a most unfair and
unpleasant piece of journalism.
What followed was interesting. La
Luna took large numbers of bookings
from those who wanted to support
the restaurant, and a couple of weeks
later, to their credit, the Telegraph
took the unprecedented step of
publishing a number of the letters
under one of the review’s columns.
So who is right? I will admit in
advance that the three meals I have
previously had at La Luna were
perfectly pleasant, but perhaps
standards had slipped? I therefore
booked for lunch with four friends
to see what was what.
The lunch menu at La Luna is a
fairly simple affair. There are
starter, pasta, main and dessert
courses, each with three choices
except two for the main course, and
prices are very reasonable - £8.95
for one course, £11.95 for 2 courses
and £14.50 for three courses. A la
carte is a more expensive option,
with a wider choice of around five
and six choices per course, but the
menu proved irresistible.
We were offered some nibbles
whilst mulling the menu over. All
three were excellent and included
arancini (deep fried rice balls with
tomato), panelle, (chickpea fritters)
and some very moreish, small olives.
We ordered the house wines,
Cusumano Merlot 2010 from Sicily
and Caldora Trebbiano d' Abruzzo
from Abruzzo. Both really very
quaffable.
We managed to all pick all three
starters between us, so I was able to
try them all. The aubergine, sundried
tomato, scamorza “millefoglie”
was excellent, with some excellent
flavours working well together. The
calamari fritti, parsley mayonnaise
were tasty and plentiful, and the
mayonnaise good and punchy. I
plumped for the beer battered
“zucchine”, tomato guazzetto dip,
which had the courgettes in the
lightest of batters, but they could
have done with a little more flavour,
and worked better with the parsley
mayonnaise than the tomato dip.
From the pasta course, we chose
pappardelle, prawns, peas,
mushroom, and spaghetti, courgette
carbonara. Both of these were very
good, and happily the portions were
reasonable given this was only the
half way point of this repast.
Two choices of main course, one fish
and one meat. The fish course was
mackerel, rocket, fennel, orange,
spring onion, which was my choice
principally because my doctor had
recommended eating more oily fish.
A very delicious combination of
different but complementary
flavours, and the fish was nicely
cooked even if the skin was perhaps
a little blacker than it should have
been. The others all enjoyed their
pork “saltimbocca”, spring greens,
with three lovely discs of very
tender, locally sourced meat. Side
helpings of green beans and roast
potatoes were spot on.
And so to puddings, my least
favoured course. My fellow diners
all abandoned the set menu at this
point and all had vanilla pod panna
cotta which, judging by the lack of
talking and perfectly clean plates,
was very well received. From the
lunch menu, I chose the intriguing
pear sorbet & Donnafugata Kabir,
the latter being a rather delightful
Sicilian Moscato, which I poured
over the sorbet and demolished in
short order. A very light and
refreshing finale.
The restaurant was reasonably full for
an April half term lunchtime, with
many diners appearing to be regulars.
Which seems to be the point. Regulars
like this place and so they come back,
and it’s no surprise why - the food is
lovely, good wines, efficient and
friendly service and staff, and the set
lunch is terrific value.
So ignore the Telegraph. You can
ignore me too. Just give La Luna a
ring, book a table and try it for
yourself. You might become a
regular.
FARNHAM & VILLAGES R&A x 43
Here are some
summer favourites
that should warm
y’all up! I am talking about the slow cooking
of Louisiana BBQ. I will be sharing some of my tips,
recipes and techniques of slow cooking and grilling
with flavours of the southwest and the bayou. Keep in
mind that I have noticed the weather here may change
frequently, so I have incorporated slow cooking
New Orleans Barbecue Ribs
This is a good recipe for slow cooked ribs. You start by
asking for a St. Louis cut as this gives you a meatier rib.
Also it makes its own BBQ sauce.
Ingredients:
5 medium vine ripe tomatoes cut in wedges
1 onion sliced
4 garlic cloves smashed
4 tbs Dijon mustard
½ cup brown sugar
4 tbs red wine vinegar
1 tbsp Worcestershire
2 satsumas or clementines, cut in wedges
1 tsp Dijon mustard
¼ cup honey
1 dried chilli (if you can’t find use 2 tsps of mild chilli
powder or smoked paprika)
1 cup water
Dry rub ‐ use a good Cajun seasoning add 2 or 3 tsp of
light brown sugar to taste
2 racks of St Louis cut pork spare ribs or beef short ribs
‐ if you can get your butcher to trim off the silver skin
on the back of bones do, it will make the world of
difference.
Serves 4.
Method:
Generously coat ribs with the rub, pushing the
seasoning into the meat. In a roasting pan, add the
remaining ingredients and then place ribs on top.
Cover with foil but leave some air gaps and bake at
150F for 2 hours. Uncover and let cool. Reserve the
liquid and puree it in a blender to make sauce. On a
medium grill, cook ribs bone down, baste with sauce
44 x R&A FARNHAM & VILLAGES
Louisiana ‘cue on the Wey
with Richard Myers
indoors and finishing and flavouring your ‘cue outside.
This way you can pre cook and just finish off at a later
time weather permitting. It also helps prevent over
grilling and burning from trying to cook from raw on
the wood coals. So you can just sit back and enjoy your
company and have a true relaxing evening with friends.
Laissez les bon temps roulez – let the good times roll, as
we say in Louisiana!
and turn over letting the grill caramelise the ribs and
sauce, watching carefully to not burn.
Cajun spice Dry Rub
I sell my own spice but you can make your own version.
Ingredients:
100g fine crystal sea salt
25g granulated garlic
30g granulated onion
25g paprika
10g white pepper
10g black pepper
5g cayenne pepper
10g dried herbs (thyme, oregano)
Method:
Blend to your own taste using salt first then add
remaining ingredients to your taste. Use this as a spice
mix – and to use as a dry rub add 2 or 3 tbs light brown
sugar.
Cajun marinade and grilling basics for vegetables,
chicken and seafood
Ingredients:
1 cup of extra virgin olive oil
1 lime squeezed
2 to 3 tsps of Dijon mustard
A splash of Worcestershire sauce
3 to 4 tsps of Cajun spice
Optional splash of sherry wine
Method:
This is a very basic marinade, but it adds a good flavour
to poultry, seafood and veggies. You can add fresh
herbs like thyme or rosemary. You can deepen the
June 2012
heat with chilli sauce or fresh chillies. Because of the
citrus and salt, do not marinate for a long time, 10
minutes tops for seafood, and always grill skin side first
to get that caramelised crust on the skin before you
turn over and finish the top.
For shellfish, just try and caramelise both sides and try
not to over grill. Remember the food keeps cooking
after you remove from the heat, so check your food. If
it is overcooked on the grill it will be dry in 5 minutes.
For vegetables, cut in thin slices or break apart in nice
pieces to ensure even cooking. Just coat veggie slices,
let sit for 5 minutes, then grill or pan sear. Remember
not to grill on too high a heat as the product will burn
and not caramelise.
When doing chicken or poussin (a young, small
chicken), cut and remove back bone, marinate and
then lay chicken flat in baking tray. Pre bake in a low
temperature oven at 70C for about 30 to 40 minutes.
The chicken may still be raw, so check the internal
temperature and make sure it is at least 150F, then
grill the chicken starting bone side down on medium
grill. Turn over and caramelise the skin, not letting it
burn, and serve with chipotle salsa (see below) and
warm corn tortillas if you can find them.
Chipotle salsa
Ingredients:
4 medium tomatoes
2 minced garlic cloves
Chipotle paste to taste, 2 to 3 tsp depends on your
taste for heat
3 tbs olive oil
2 limes, squeezed
Salt
1 cup of cut coriander
1½ grilled purple onions
Method:
Grill the tomatoes and the peeled purple onion halves
on high heat to blister skin, but try not to grill too long.
Remove from grill and let cool. Roughly chop onion,
tomato and coriander, add minced garlic, chipotle
paste, oil and lime juice, salt to taste and you have a
fantastic roasted chipotle salsa.
Note: use caution with chipotle paste and if you use
chillies, make sure that you wear gloves and do not
touch your eyes.
Strawberry Cheesecake Almondine
For one 9‐inch pie crust:
Ingredients for the pastry:
¾ cup plain flour
¼ cup flaked, toasted almonds
1 tsp caster sugar
¼ tsp salt
2 tbs chilled butter
1 tbs cold water
Method:
Preheat oven to 220C degrees. Blend flour, toasted
almonds, sugar and salt in food processor until the
nuts are finely ground. Add butter into pieces and
process until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add enough
water to bind dough. Wrap in clingfilm and chill for 20
minutes. Roll out and transfer to tart pan with
removable bottom. Bake crust blind for about 15
minutes. Cool, then reduce oven to 170C degrees and
bake crust until lightly brown. Remove and let cool.
Ingredients for the filling:
500g container of cream cheese
½ cup icing sugar
4 tbs of sour cream
2 tsp pure vanilla extract
250g tub of clotted cream
1 prepared almond pie crust (as above)
Strawberries and clementines, halved, and blueberries
for decoration
4 mint leaves cut in ribbons
3 tbs apricot jam used to glaze fruit
Method:
Beat the cream cheese until smooth. Gently beat in the
sugar, sour cream, clotted cream and vanilla until
combined. Spoon mixture into the pie crust. Chill for
one hour. Decorate with strawberries, clementines and
blueberries. Sprinkle with mint. Heat apricot jam with 4
tbs water in small sauce pan, try not to boil, and when
dissolved let cool for a few minutes and glaze fruit.
I think you will enjoy this summer treat with your ‘cue!
Drought Resistant Planting
Advice on choosing the right plants for the hot Summer ahead from
Cathie at Cathie’s Gardening School, Secretts Garden Centre, Milford.
In April we were told there were to be water restrictions in many
parts of the country including hosepipe bans. Anyway after a cold
May we are promised a hot Summer and it is only right that we
try to conserve as much water as possible. For those of you planting
containers and baskets you might like to think about alternatives
to your usual bedding plants.
Traditional Bedding Plants
Many of us choose tender perennials such as Pelargoniums,
Impatiens and Fuchsias, and half hardy annuals such as Petunias,
Lobelia, Alyssum and Tagetes to bring a riot of colour to Summer
tubs, baskets and containers. Unfortunately these are all hungry
and thirsty plants requiring a lot of attention. Often hanging baskets
need to be watered daily if not twice a day in the height of Summer,
perhaps not the best choice then with all the water restrictions.
Drought Tolerant Plants For Containers
To understand how some plants tolerate dry spells more than
others it is necessary to think about where they grow in the wild.
Many plants come from hot arid areas of the world and are adapted
to long dry Summers. One of the best adapted is the cactus but I am
not suggesting we all plant cacti in our tubs as they are very spiky!
There are a wide range of succulent plants which have fleshy leaves
and are able to store water for longer periods. The technical name
is Xerophytic.
Delosperma, Mesembrianthemum, Lampranthus and Sedum are
excellent trailing plants. Aloe and Aeonium provide wonderful
structure and need next to no water. Pelargoniums are actually
desert plants and give lovely colourful flowers, there are many to
choose from. As it is Summer and there is no risk of frost many
desert plants can be chosen and used successfully for this period.
You will need to bring them in by the end of September if you want
to keep them for future years.
Hardy Plants for the Flower Beds
For outside there are plants that tolerate drought conditions,
although they do need a little watering to get established. These
include:
1. Verbena bonariensis. A lovely tall purple flowering perennial
loved by butterflies and bees but beware if you have a sandy soil it
will seed everywhere!
2. Geranium macrorrhizum. A fabulous shallow rooting ground
cover perennial with pink or white flowers, excellent for sun or
partial shade. There are many other hardy Geraniums to choose
from, not to be confused with the tender Pelargoniums often called
Geraniums as they are closely related.
3. Alchemilla mollis. Lady’s mantle, a favourite with flower arrangers
for it’s lovely feathery acid green flowers.
4. Digitalis purpurea. The foxglove which is technically a biennial
and only lasts for two years but if you are clever can plant them
every year and save the seed. They grow anywhere even dense
shade.
5. Verbascum thapsus. Great Mullein and many others, some are
biennial and others come back every year. Easy to grow from seed
and seeds readily if conditions are right.
6. Euphorbia cyparricias. Grows in sand dunes and tolerates
drought. Pretty acid green flowers and many other varieties
available. Some are more drought tolerant than others.
7. Ophiopogon planiscapus 'nigrescens'. Looks like a black grass but
is actually a member of the lily family. Excellent ground cover and
good contrast for silver leaved plants.
8. Lavandula angustifolia. The good old English Lavender, loves hot
dry sunny conditions and attracts bees. Many varieties available.
9. Stachys byzantina. Lamb’s ears, lovely furry leaves and pretty pink
flowers. Covered in fine hairs to protect against water loss.
10. Osteospermum ‘Lady Leitrim (above). This is one of the hardier
varieties and has lasted through the winter very successfully at
Secretts. Called the African Daisy which gives you a clue to where it
grows!
11. Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’. One of the very best plants for the
Summer as it flowers from May to September and often beyond.
Insects love it and it is one of the few flowers that continues to
secrete nectar for bees even in colder spells. It can look good in a
bed, container or raised bed, why not plant a whole row of them?
12. Sempervivums. These are the houseleeks and despite their
name fully hardy. We are in the process of making a ‘living roof’ of
these in the teaching garden and they are never going to be
watered!
There are many other plants that grow in dry conditions but too
many to mention here. Alpines, small leaved herbs like thyme and
don’t forget the Rudbeckias, Asters and Echinaceas which provide
later Summer colour and thrive on prairie grasslands. We also have
many native wild plants which not only tolerate drought but provide
important food for our beneficial insects. There are also a whole
range of grasses and bamboos and for the more architectural look
try Echium, Phormium, Cordyline or Trachycarpus which is the
hardy palm tree.
I hope this gives you some hope for the dry months ahead.
I am illustrating how important it is to learn the full name of the
plant you want to use and what conditions it likes. It’s amazing how
they are adapted to different conditions.
If you want to visit a garden why not try Beth Chatto in Colchester,
she hasn’t watered her dry garden for years!
Next month we’ll be looking at ‘Plants for Butterflies and Bees’’
If you want to learn more there are regular
workshops and taster sessions at the
Gardening School available for everyone!
How to treat yourself, save money and be eco friendly
I am sure you have all enjoyed that luxurious
feel that you get when soaking in a bath in a
hotel; the water is so soft that it makes your
skin feel supple and smooth. That is because
the water is softened by very large commercial
softeners, but did you know that you can enjoy
the same quality from a compact Kinetico
softener that will fit under your kitchen sink.
Well if you did know this then here are some
facts that maybe you didn’t know:
• An average household can save around £400
per year by using 75% less soap, shampoo,
conditioner, and washing powders.
• Your bathroom ware and glassware will be
protected from aggressive lime scale and last
years longer.
• Less than 1mm of scale on heating elements
will reduce boiler efficiency by 50% - that’s
50% saving on heating bills.
• Washing machines and dishwashers will last
years longer.
• If you suffer from dry skin or any skin
problems such as eczema your condition will
be vastly improved with soft water.
Eceau have been appointed as a local
distributor for Kinetico softeners which are
ABs - 6 pack, No pack or Value Pack?!
With advice from Mark Raynsford
The infamous 6 pack! To some the holy grail of training
and a great physique, the ‘must have’ item of fitness; to
others something you keep cold in the fridge and drink at
weekends!
Whilst this article will focus more on the movements and
exercises for training abs, let me state first that, without a
‘good, clean’ diet, you are seriously wasting your time with
abdominal exercises, and the search for a flat stomach. If
you’re regularly eating processed foods, over indulging
with alcohol, sugars and irregular sleep patterns, then you
are trying to fill a bucket with multiple holes and leaks, so
you need to sort this first.
The abdominal area, also known as the core or trunk, is, as
the name suggests, our bodies “structure’ and stability; like
the trunk of a tree, it is there for support and strength. They
connect the spine, pelvis and run the length of the torso.
Ask different people and you’ll get different answers as to
the muscles that make up the core section, but personally
I’d say there are around 10 muscles, some deep in the body
and unseen, some closer to the surface and possibly visual.
Every movement you make activates your core muscles;
from bending down to pick something up, to turning
round to answer someone, to even lifting an arm up in the
air or to the side.
Abs or Rectus Abdominis (the 6 pack) have a very limited
function. They actually only flex you at the waist, or allow
you to bend over from the waist. The first rule of health
and safety is to bend from the legs, and not the waist, so
we’ve already ruled out Ab work or movement as something
safe. Our core unit works as that - a unit - so to train
one particular muscle, on such a functional unit, seems
pointless.
How many people reading this have tried Ab crunches, or
sit-ups and found they strain their neck? Again, a sure sign
the right muscles aren’t working. Getting ‘abs’ is about
lowering your body fat through hard work, clean food, and
challenging workouts. When you can perform upwards of
40 crunches, there is nothing challenging happening there
- there’s also minimal calorific expenditure due to the lack
of intensity of the exercise/movement.
So what should you do?
Functional exercises that will train the whole core area,
mimicking every day movements of twisting, flexing, rotating
and bending. Training with these movements will
not only strengthen your core area, but minimise or eliminate
chances of lower back pain, often caused through
muscular imbalances and a weak core area.
The Plank
This works one of the most underrated core muscles
(Transverse Abdominis - TVA). Start on your forearms, and
push up on your toes, keeping your body in a straight, horizontal
line. Keep in position for 45 seconds or more. To
activate your TVA, look to pull in your belly button hard,
towards your lower back, and draw it up and inside your
ribcage - almost bracing your stomach as if you're going to
be struck in the stomach area! This creates a vacuum/tightening
of the area, like a corset being tightened at your
back. Ok, it may be a loose fitting corset for now, but continued
work will make your stomach flatter and stronger!
Rotations
From standing, put your hands out in front of you, shoulder
width apart (optional is to hold a weight), activate your
TVA as above, and rotate your trunk/upper body to one
side, squeeze your TVA hard and pull back the opposite
way. Aim to keep lower body still so you’re just rotating
the core area. As you become more competent, build up
the speed and weight you use.
Side Flexions
Using the same stance as above, put one arm in the air and
then flex over at the waist away from the raised arm side,
pause for a few seconds at the furthest point, contract abs
and TVA and pull back to middle. Repeat for 30+ seconds
and swap sides. Again keep lower body still and add
weight to raised arm as necessary.
Superman
A great core stability exercise, start on all fours, ensuring
your hips and shoulders are equidistant. With your head
looking down, extend one arm out in front next to your
ear, then slowly lift the opposite leg behind you. Back
should stay flat, and hips should not rock. Hold for 10 seconds
and slowly return and swap. Repeat 6-10 times.
If you have access to weights, and/or are more competent,
there are many more exercises that can be used to work
the core area effectively like dead lifts, overhead pressing,
squatting and lunging along with cable work.
Even when sitting or driving you concentrate on pulling
your TVA up and in, holding it tight while moving, you’ll
find over time it will become stronger.
home/gym, please visit my YouTube account and checkout
How to Banish Stomach Fat - Forever!
With advice from Heather Gillam
As one of Surrey’s leading fat loss specialists, one
of the most common questions I’m asked is
how to get rid of stomach fat. For many, the
blasted stuff appears for no apparent reason; for
others, it is clearly connected to something. The trick
is in understanding where it came from; only then
you can work out how to get rid of it.
When I talk about stomach fat, I’m talking about the
fat which hangs around on the centre of your stomach
– not the fat which sits around your hips like a
spare tyre; that’s caused by eating too much sugar.
Central stomach fat is almost always caused by cortisol
- the stress hormone - being disproportionately
high in your body at the wrong times. Although it
might be the case that you’re stressed out from
being busy, this isn’t necessarily the case; your body
could be stressed because you haven’t been eating
or sleeping well, or drinking enough water.
Menopause can also be a massive factor, since it
puts your adrenal glands under huge amounts of
stress, again increasing the stress response in your
body.
Surprisingly, exercise can also cause stomach fat if
you choose the wrong exercise. Constant paced aerobic
exercise is one of the easiest things you can do
to de-stress your overworked body, but if you go
overboard with it, it will have the opposite effect.
Here’s a plan of action for you to follow to reduce
your stomach fat:
Get your diet spot on:
Remove absolutely everything packaged or
processed from your diet. This includes those awful
butter substitutes (even the cholesterol lowering
ones), any low-fat product (read ‘high sugar’) and
those awful ‘healthy cereals’, as well as things you
might not think of, like tins of soup.
By default, doing the above will remove pretty much
all rubbish from your diet, as you’ll be living on fresh
fruit and vegetables, fresh meat and fish, clean water
and nuts and seeds. Omega 3 is very important; so
much so that I’d suggest taking a high dose of a
good quality supplement. Of course, you’ll also
need to get rid of all alcohol, and all caffeine.
Make better lifestyle choices:
Get to bed at 10pm at least five nights a week. It’s a
great way for your body to repair itself, which will
reduce your stress level. Lose fat while sleeping –
sounds good to me!
Do some proper exercise:
Resistance training should form a big part of your
workout routine. I don’t mean you should be doing
loads of biceps curls, rather doing a proper workout
designed specially for you and your stress levels.
I hope this article has helped you understand the
reasons fat is storing on your stomach, and what
you can do about it. Everything I’ve suggested is
very do-able, it just requires a plan of action and
some determination.
Give it a try for a month – take measurements at the
start and finish, and let me know how you’ve got on!
You do not have to travel far in Hampshire to discover splendid cycling
country. A few miles north of the county’s bustling seaports, within
sight of the sea, rise the South Downs, a beautiful range of hills
threaded by narrow country lanes. Follow the route of this tour to
enjoy the special timeless appeal of these chalk downs. The ride starts
in Buriton, an attractive village with a pond alive with ducks. From the village, a
scenic road leads you through the heart of the Queen Elizabeth Country Park. Then you climb the Downs
to one of the highlights of this tour, Butser Ancient Farm. This is a real working Iron Age farm with
thatched roundhouses and authentic animals and crops. Then, a highlight for all cricket fans – cycling past
Broadhalfpenny Down, famous as the home of the Hambledon Cricket Club that dominated the world of
Hyden Farm Lane, signed East Meon. On your left is
afterwards at the remarkable De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill.
Then on 14th July, there will be a lunch at The 3 Horseshoes in
As part of a £30k fundraising project, St. James Primary
School, Elstead have booked a 'Happy Circus' on 19th July
2012 from 6pm to 9pm. Individual and family tickets are
available from the school office on 01252 703245. The
fundraising project is to help the school’s Building Fund to
bring 'the whole school under one roof'. As a church school,
they have to raise part of any cost to make the much needed
improvements to the school. The circus will include crazy
clowns, magical illusions, daring aerialists, speciality acts and
international artistes. If people can't come and would like to
donate to this fund raising project, please call the school office
or visit the website at www.st-james-elstead.surrey.sch.uk.
The Surrey Food Show takes place at Loseley Park, Guildford
on Saturday 30 June and Sunday 1st July from 10am to 5pm.
Plenty of food and drink stands will be exhibiting, and there
will be a full programme of cookery demonstrations from local
and other chefs, as well as wine and beer tasting sessions.
Sounds good to me! See www.oakleighfairs.co.uk/loseley for
more information and to buy tickets in advance at a discounted
price.
Summer this year seems to be rather a hit and miss affair but
let's hope it improves in time for the popular Midsummer
Jazz Picnic at Tilford‘s Rural Life Centre on the evening of
Saturday June 23rd. The Panama Café Orchestra are back by
popular demand for the country life museum's event, now in
its eighth year. The classical jazz numbers of the '20s and '30s
typically straight from the River Room at the Savoy start at
7pm and tickets are already on sale from the museum, priced
at £12 each. Bring your picnic (or order one beforehand from
the museum's café) as well as something to sit on and enjoy
the toe-tapping atmosphere. For further information and to
book tickets, telephone 01525 795571. To order a tailor made
The ladies of Farnham
Townswomen’s Guild are enjoying
their Diamond Anniversary Year.
In November 1952, a group of
Farnham ladies started two guilds,
one to be held in the afternoon,
and another in the evening. The
afternoon guild membership rose
to 135 and a morning guild was
started too. How times have
changed! Currently there is just
one Farnham Guild, with 42 members,
but this can change – ladies
just need to know we are here!
Townswomen’s Guilds is a national
organisation for women
which grew out of the Women’s
Suffragist Movement in the 1920s.
And we still campaign. Human
Trafficking, Pensions for Carers
and Grandparents Rights are
some of the issues we have addressed.
The National Annual General Meeting
is held in June at the ICC in
Birmingham, where ladies gather
from across the country. The disgrace
of homes left empty and aid
money going astray are the two
mandate topics delegates will debate
this year. The Mandate Proposals
will be the subjects for
Farnham Afternoon Townswomen’s
Guild’s Discussion Group before
being raised at the June meeting
prior to our delegate heading off
to Birmingham.
However busy Townswomen may
be, many still find the time to help
others. In Farnham we have a knitting
group whose work, from
blankets for patients of Addis
Ababa Fistula Hospital to teddy
www.roundandaboutssh.co.uk
bears, children’s jumpers and
men’s hats, is all donated. The
proceeds of the sales table at
most monthly meetings, and
those of the summer garden
event are given to local charities.
This year we are supporting Surrey
Association for Visual Impairment,
as well as the Victoria
Garden. Our association with the
Victoria Garden is of long standing,
and a member of F.A.T.G.
serves on its committee. Our
members appreciate the ‘secret
garden’ and are grateful to all involved
in making it such a beautiful
corner of Farnham. To
commemorate our 60th Anniversary,
we are delighted that two
shrubs (Choisya White Dazzler)
have been planted.
The most important reasons for
our members to belong to F.A.T.G.
are the friendships we make and
mutual support. We have a
monthly meeting, usually with a
speaker, always with tea and chatter,
but we really get to know each
other in the subsections. At present
we have a Discussion Group,
Knitting, Scrabble and the Am-
Images from top: Preparing for the Carnival and a
New Member’s Coffee Morning.
blers. In the past there have been
groups for Drama, Choir, Country
Dancing and Social Studies to
name but four, and new groups
can be formed if there is interest.
Most groups meet monthly but
the Amblers meet each Monday.
It is rare for the weather to prevent
our meeting, and if the rain
is too much we descend upon a
garden centre or to a member’s
home for coffee. Amblers meet at
Firgrove Court at 9.30am and then
drive to our walk, of 3 to 5 miles.
The farthest we travel is Waggoners
Wells which is a must in
the Autumn. We also have outings,
including a celebratory one
in November to Woking to the
‘Mousetrap’, which also is 60 this
year. And we’ve produced our
favourite recipe booklet as well as
a calendar, from photos taken by
members.
Guilds are grouped into Federations,
and we belong to Mid-Surrey
Federation. It is good to meet
ladies from across Surrey from as
far as Fetcham at the organised
events, such as 10-pin bowling,
line dancing, quiz, a Scottish Day
and croquet. There is also the Carol
Service, which last year was followed
by lunch and entertainment
provided by various Guilds. Seven
Fairy Bloomers from Farnham performed
a variation on ‘Nobody
loves a fairy when she’s forty’,
which caused much laughter.
At F.A.T.G. we have friendship and
fun. Why not join us? For more information,
please phone 01252
712503 or 01252 722690, e-mail
zelbob@aol.com or just come
along. We meet at 2pm each
month on the second Tuesday in
the Methodist Church Hall, South
Street (down the alley between
the Church and the Citizens Advice
Bureau).
music, and still and moving image – at The Electric Theatre
on the 20th to 22nd June at 7.45pm.
The new play, written by LynchPin director Jack Lynch, follows a
chance meeting between two strangers, the fabulous and other‐
worldly storyteller, Canta Dora, and the secretive and tortured Pews.
This chance meeting forces Pews to examine his own life as he tries to
come to terms with a troubled past he’s desperately trying to escape.
Interwoven into this dialogue are stories from The Forgiveness Project,
a global charity that explores issues of reconciliation and conflict
resolution through true stories ranging from the local to the global.
The new work has already attracted serious support, with a £10k grant
from the Arts Council and support from The Irene Prestwich Trust,
Initiatives Of Change and Guildford Borough Council.
“LynchPin has built up an impressive body of professionally staged
work over the past decade, culminating in last year’s The Women Of
Lockerbie by Deborah Brevoort, which won rave reviews from all
quarters,” says Jack. “Consider This..., however, will be the biggest and
most ambitious project we’ve ever undertaken.”
A big and ambitious multi‐media event with dialogue, song,
