4 x R&A GODALMING & VILLAGES January 2013
Are you a qualified therapist looking to join our professional body? Call Bridget Walford for more information.
I thought I would start off this month’s ramblings with a
message we received from Ian Coult, Chairman of
Trustees, The Clockhouse, Milford. I quote, “On behalf of
my fellow Trustees, I would like to thank the readers of
Round&About for your kind support to The Clockhouse
during 2012. We never take your support and generosity
for granted for it is vital to our success in our mission to
alleviate those twin evils of old age – isolation and
loneliness. Whilst it is often the case that healthcare
cannot fix the failings of the body, we can as a society
help older people to avoid loneliness by involving them in
community activities, making it easier for them to bear
the other problems they may have”. It is always nice to
get a thank you but I am sure I speak for everyone when I
say that we are delighted to give any support and help
we can to such a worthwhile organisation. For those
readers not already aware, The Clockhouse is situated in
Chapel Lane, Milford, just along from Secretts Farm Shop,
and they are open Monday to Friday with an especially
warm welcome for new members. Do visit them for a
coffee or lunch and take a look around. The manager,
Robin Amy, can be reached on 01483 420668.
In the years 1914-1918, a million young men from
across the length and breadth of the British Isles, lost
their lives in a pitiless conflict, the war supposed to be
the “war to end all wars”. There was scarcely a hamlet
or village into which did not creep a wave of sorrow. One
of these villages, a local village to our area, was the
village of West Clandon. The story of the effect this
catastrophic war made to this close knit community was
almost certainly on a parallel to all the similar villages in
our local area. The story of West Clandon and its grand
neighbour Clandon House and the changes it had on the
everyday lives of all who lived and worked in the village
and the big house, is revealed in a talk to be given by
Sheila Doyle at Milford and District U3A’s next monthly
ramblings
THE INDISPENSABLE GUIDE TO WHAT’S ON WHERE IN YOUR AREA
Welcome to another year! 2012 will be remembered for a hugely successful Olympic
Games, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and one of the worst summers in living memory. So
what can we expect for 2013? My prediction is that by the end of the year we might at last
just begin to get better news on the economy and that we will enjoy a much better summer.
The nation will of course be cheered by the birth of William and Kate’s baby and England will
retain the Ashes. Am I being too optimistic?
CHARITY EVENTS > SPONSORED WALKS > EXHIBITIONS > HAPPENINGS > FUND-RAISERS > FÊTES & FAIRS
talk on Friday January 11th at 2pm in Milford Village Hall.
Learn of food shortages, a Zeppelin raid, of the many
comforts donated and created for the troops in the front
line and of the use of Clandon House for the healing and
recuperation of the battle front wounded and much
more in this interesting and informative talk of a period
which still looms large in most of our family histories. A
period of sadness and despair, but also one of courage,
intense patriotism and eventual triumph. Entrance is £1,
which includes tea/coffee and cake. For information on
how membership of Milford and District U3A has the
ability with its multitude of activities, to enhance the
lives of the older, but still active and enquiring
generation. Go to www.milford-u3a.org.uk or contact
KOOSA Kids Ltd, a leading out of school childcare
provider in the South, has run various fund-raising
initiatives throughout all the KOOSA Kids clubs this year
in a bid to raise funds for their chosen charity for 2012,
Make-A-Wish Foundation® UK. Make-A-Wish, based in
Camberley, grants magical wishes to thousands of
children and young adults with life-threatening
conditions. There are currently 20,000 children and
young people in the UK fighting a life-threatening
condition and this year alone 1,200 children will turn to
Make-A-Wish to have their wish granted. The charity
needed to raise £6.8 million in 2012 to achieve this.
KOOSA Kids managed to smash their target of raising
£1000 and actually raised over £2000, so well done to
everyone who took part in events throughout the year.
KOOSA Kids are still collecting donations on behalf of
Make-A-Wish, and if you would like to donate, you can
do so by visiting www.koosakids.co.uk. Donations can
also be made by texting ’KKID50 £2’ or ’KKID50
The more observant readers will be aware that
Marcus and I grew moustaches throughout
November for something called Movember.
During November each year, Movember is
responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on
thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around
the world. The aim of which is to raise vital funds
and awareness for men’s health, specifically
prostate cancer and testicular cancer.
The funds raised in the UK are directed to
programmes run directly by Movember and our
men’s health partners, Prostate Cancer UK and
the Institute of Cancer Research.
So we decided to give it a go, and enlisted the help
of our friend Simon Thornton, Godalming’s local
butcher, to form the MoVantage Team. We
emailed friends, family and customers to request
financial support, and also decided that
Round&About would contribute £1 for every
advert sold in November to the total.
Well, we are all delighted to say that we managed
to raise the not insignificant amount of £1,190
between the three of us. So a big thank you from
us to all our friends, family and customers who
supported us. We even made the front cover of
the Surrey Advertiser!
FAT LOSS FRONTIERS: 3 TOP
TIPS TO HELP YOU GET THE
BODY YOU LONG FOR:
1) Cut out sugar. Sugar initiates huge spikes in your
insulin levels, and continual overload leads to insulin
resistance and a subsequent mass storage of
fat.
2) Manage your stress levels. High stress, including
nutritional, tiredness and emotional stress, leads to
high release levels of hormone cortisol, which in
turn leads to food cravings as well as emergency
fuel (fat) storage, particularly around the abdomen.
3) Lift weights. Resistance training is proven to elevate
your metabolism for up to 38 hours post exercise
and helps build a lean, athletic body. Make sure
you follow a progressive program specific to your
goals and biomechanical status.
To learn more about using diet and exercise to
achieve a truly fit and healthy body, consult the experts
Remember a few issues ago I wrote about two
5 Sarahs who were going to attempt to climb
Kilimanjaro in order to raise funds for the baby
unit at The Royal County Hospita? Well, they both made
it to the summit (19349ft!); a great achievement. What’s
more they raised over £2000 for the baby unit. Well done
indeed to you both.
Godalming based songwriting duo Philippa Reed and
Chris Maxfield, a.k.a. Reed Maxfield are launching their
second album, ‘Songbook Vol. 2’ with a night of musical
entertainment at Guildford’s Electric Theatre on Monday
21st January from 7pm to 10.30pm. This is a
collaboration with the students of Contemporary Music
from Godalming College who will be performing on the
night, as well as gaining vital experience in live music
production. Special guests on the night include
established Surrey musicians Anna Neale, Mark Nelson
and Vic Cracknell. Philippa Reed and Chris Maxfield began
their musical collaboration in 2003. The resulting body of
work – their ongoing Songbook series - is an eclectic
reflection of their combined influences and talents. The
Reed Maxfield sound draws on a wide range of influences.
These stretch from contemporary British folk, to countryrock
/ Americana and the singer-songwriter genre, and
back to 60’s /70’s west coast rock/pop. In 2009, Reed
Maxfield released 'Songbook Vol. 1' and subsequently
gigged around London and the South East. Their live band
currently comprises former major label artist Leighton
Carter (vocals) and Guildford-based Phil Lockhart
Style shake up
New year, new you. Well it doesn’t have to be that dramatic but a few changes
and additions to your fashion and beauty routine could make all the difference.
Kirstie and Hanna list some top tips:
Fashion
It’s so easy to get bored with the clothes that we have,
but a lot of the time we just forget what’s in the back
of the wardrobe. Lack of time means we pick out the
same old options and, in time, boredom creeps in.
Simple Wardrobe shuffle
This is a quick option to re shape your wardrobe. Take
everything out and lay on your bed (that's the clothes,
not you!). Shuffle your clothes into different groupings
than before - all skirts together, all shirts together or
go for similar colours grouped together. Just this simple
process will remind you what’s in there, and show
you new options to wear together. If you have more
time, try on different layers. Be adventurous with new
prints worn together and when you like a new look,
place back in the wardrobe in complete outfits.
Mix it Up
Aim to mix up brands in your outfit. As tempting as it
is to buy the whole outfit from a coordinated store, it's
the quickest way to look bland and unimaginative.
If you’re lacking inspiration, visit shops not normally
on your shopping path. If M&S and Monsoon are your
safety zones, think about buying an edgier cardigan
from Top Shop to wear with your classic trousers or a
10 x R&A GODALMING, CRANLEIGH & VILLAGES
printed blouse from Warehouse to add a fresh take to
your business suit. A client of mine in her 70’s recently
went for the comfort of trousers by CC, stripy top by
Mint Velvet, cardigan layer by Oasis and scarf by Miss
Selfridge. She looked great and felt youthful with a
fresher take to her look.
Best condition
Be ruthless with the look of fabrics. If it is really too
bobbly, either invest in a De-Fuzzer from Lakeland,
£4.79 or gently pick off, while watching the TV. Check
buttons are all on securely, and sleeve and dress hems
are in right places. A jacket with sleeves sitting too
long will look too big all round - it’s so worth investing
£10 on an alteration to get the levels right.
Morning layers
Early morning, pull out one garment you love and
work from there. One statement item is normally
enough to wear with basic layers. Have plenty of long
sleeve T-shirts in your wardrobe - I find Uniqlo a great
place for layers, the nearest store is in Kingston or on
line at www.uniqlo.com.
I love it
Adored items are essential items in your wardrobe.
Just a few statement pieces of clothing that make you
an individual will help you define your own look.
January 2013
Head for the smaller boutiques, who will stock unusual
brands in small quantities. My favourites are
Blush in Haslemere, Catwalk in Godalming, One Forty
in Cranleigh and Ordri’s Boutique in Farnham. You
may pay a bit more for something unique but it will
be worth it.
Beauty
Central heating and harsh weather conditions play
havoc with our skin, and faces and hands take a real
battering.
Smooth hands
Untouched by harsh chemicals and free of additives,
‘Rose’ hand cream by Cath Kidson, (£8) and a
favourite of Hanna’s, ‘Shea Butter’ by L’Occitane
(£18.50), will boost your hand circulation.
Nail it
Nails are an easy way to be on trend by wearing the
new colours to zap up your outfit. Try a metallic gold
shade ‘Lanesborough Place’ (£11, Nails inc).
Complexion lift
For a tried and tested skin lift, use Liz Earle’s Cleanse
and Polish Hot cloth cleanser (£14.25). The two phase
cleanser not only removes make-up but as you wipe
away, the muslin cloth dislodges dead skin cells, to
give your skin a really fresh look and feel. Visit the
store at 72-74 High Street, Guildford. We love this.
Instant facelift
For an instant up lift, choose an eyebrow reshape and
threading session which will open up your eyes. Available
in department stores and even at Superdrug (£7),
a great way to remove all the little hairs that are hard
to see yourself.
Keep colours up dated
Trend spotting for spring/summer 2013 shows a lot of
designers sticking to a neutral palette for make-up with
some exciting ‘pops’ of colour in orange, reds and pinks.
Bobbi Brown has captured this perfectly with her new
nudes and neons range. Try her lip colour in ‘Atomic
Orange’ worn with ‘Ultra Nude Eye Palette’. As Bobbi
states, “it's about highlighting one feature at a time.”
Face up to it
BB creams were the talking point last year and continue
to be this year. For those who haven’t tried them
yet, they’re like a tinted moisturizer but with added
ingredients such as antioxidants. A high street brand
that rivals the high end is by Garnier, Miracle skin Perfector,
SPF 15 (£9.99).
Pretty Damn Good
If you need a kick start, why not invest in a ‘wardrobe
detox’ with Kirstie or learn some new tricks and techniques
to get your face looking fab with Hanna. They
both have years of experience in the fashion and
beauty industry. There are various packages to choose
Retired professional and businessmen meet monthly at
Milford Probus Club for a lunch and an interesting talk. In
November, Peter Herring described the history of
Winkworth Arboretum. This collection of more than 1,000
specimens of shrubs and trees was started in 1937 by Dr
Wilfrid Fox, a skin specialist by profession. Some of the
woodland was felled as part of the war effort and this
actually encouraged him to plant a wider selection on the
original site. Free guided walks are provided on the first
Wednesday of each month. The Arboretum is now owned
by the National Trust and there are plans to build a new
visitor centre with improved facilities. Milford Probus Club
has members from Waverley and beyond, and is open to
retired and semi-retired professional and businessmen
over the age of 50. They meet in Godalming on the third
Friday of each month, for lunch followed by a talk on a
wide variety of subjects. Wives and partners are invited to
join them each year for a special lunch, and can join them
for any other lunch by invitation, and for occasional visits
such as the recent visit to Blenheim Palace. The last social
event was a black tie Christmas dinner. The Club also has
other activities such as golf days. Prospective members
are invited to attend a meeting without obligation. The
next talk is on Friday 18th January and will be given by Len
Thompson, author of the book "A Rough Diamond in
South Africa". For more details, contact Mike Thompson
meeting that they had made a surplus of £326 and also
paid for the planter. The Chairman thanked the retiring
committee members and presentations will be made at
the next meeting. The newly elected officials
There are over 1700 sumptuous and
extraordinary photographs covering 180 London
locations that we wouldn’t necessarily get to see
even if we could get beyond the front door. Some
of the locations featured are accessible – like the
marvellous Sir John Soane’s Museum, and some
others can be seen during the Open House event
each September, but even then some of the rooms
that are shown in this truly stunning book are not
Grape Expectations
by Caro Feely
Paperback. Non-fiction. RRP £8.99
Published by Summersdale in July 2012
As a lover of France and of the occasional glass of
wine, I was quite excited to read about Caro Feely’s
experiences. She and her husband quit their jobs,
sold their home and followed their joint dream of
buying a vineyard in France - this with a toddler and
a newborn baby. Sure, there are a million books
14 x R&A GODALMING, CRANLEIGH & VILLAGES
such as the Blizard Institute of Cell and Molecular
Science.
Philip Davies, an architectural historian and
conservationist has written some fabulous text
which I have been repeatedly dipping into -
discovering more and more about the social
history as well as about the buildings themselves.
Extract on Lloyds Bank, 222 Strand: There is a
suggestion that the original dining room was
ventilated by a pair of women riding a tandem
bicycle in the basement to power a giant pair of
bellows, which forced air into the ground floor.
Whilst apocryphal, it may just be true. During
refurbishment, a piece of equipment resembling a
bicycle was found in the basement alongside a mass
of ducting, which appears to be the remains of the
original system.
This really is one of the most stunning and
fascinating books I’ve seen for a long time. Bill
Bryson says: ‘I’m dazzled’. ‘It’s my Book of the
Year and you can quote me on that’.
about people buying property abroad, and I admit to
having been a little sceptical to start with (yet
another Brit battles against adversity abroad), but
that was soon dispelled and I quickly became
embroiled in Caro’s struggles and triumphs.
It’s a very personal story of how she coped as a
mother of two children thrust into a foreign
environment, as a woman dealing with her
relationship with her husband as times got
physically and mentally tough for them both, and as
a woman who was used to being in a business
environment. A thoroughly enjoyable and amusing
read which I cantered through.
I know it’s not exactly a good ‘read’, except that I
happen to read cookery books all the time, in fact I
think it’s a bit of an obsession, but this book just
happens to be a lovely book and, as it’s published by
I Touch
Hardback.
Childrens. 3+ years.
Published by PatrickGeorge
It’s a beautifully produced, chunky book of 343
pages now with delightful essays by Max Loppert,
John Wells, Basil Deane, but also a piece on the
Recitatives by David Syrus and A Selective
Performance History.
Those, along with several illustrations of Mozart
and colour photographs of some recent, modern,
productions, the Libretto (in Italian and English),
notes on the text by Julian Rushton, a select
Discography, bibliography, and Mozart websites,
make this a superbly readable book for anyone
interested in opera. This is just one of a series of
opera guides produced by Alma, and I can see that
I shall have to get going on my collection.
a less well known publisher, I thought it thoroughly
deserved a mention.
The recipes in this book are beautifully
photographed, the typography is clear and readable,
and the recipes (from all around the world) are
different yet do-able, using ingredients that are
pretty much available in a good supermarket.
Sure there’s a vegan nut roast and a vegeburger in
here, but there’s also a ‘Swooning Imam’ from
Turkey, Ewa from Nigeria and Gramma Cake from
Russia. Am just off to make the Crunchy Garlicky
Potatoes from India … they look absolutely
delicious.
This is one of a series of books on the five senses
(the others in the series are iTaste, iHear, iSmell,
iSee).
True to the PatrickGeorge style of cleverly linking
graphic design with the subject, they have turned
fingers and hands into part of the image to produce
a really fun and bright book. For example iTouch …
a slimy worm (shown here).
These are delightful.
a good read
Britain’s
Great Isles
Alwyn Sambrook surveys Britain’s
outer reaches
HANDS UP IF you’ve heard of the Ascrib Islands, or
Fidra. No? How about Big Harcar, or Walney? Or the
Crowlins? Hmmm, thought so. The simple fact is
most of us don’t know all that much about the
islands surrounding us – or even how many there
are. Latest estimates reckon over 5,000, but many,
admittedly, are just rocky outcrops, home to sheep
or seabirds, and others inaccessible or
uninhabitable. Where we can step ashore, though,
there’s that distinctive sense of discovery and
separation, of time ceasing to matter.
Shetland
That’s true of these remote islands, nearer to the
Arctic Circle than to London and first settled 4,000
years ago (don’t miss the archaeological treasures of
Jarlshof), later by the Norsemen. Scandinavian
influences abound in place names and dialect
(Icelandic books are sold in Lerwick) and in darkest
January, when Up Helly Aa blends music,
merrymaking and a burning Viking galley to herald
the return of the sun. Most of the time it’s windy, and
everything adapts accordingly: Shetland ponies are
small for a reason – and encountered in all weathers
on distant, beautiful Unst, Britain’s most northerly
outpost, or on fertile Fetlar, (very) occasional haunt
of the snowy owl. Human resilience prevails, too:
Shetland crofters are above all supreme fisherman,
at home in mountainous seas. And further out, the
diehards of Foula, faithful to the pre-1752 calendar,
celebrate Christmas on 6th December and New Year
on 13th January. In this latitude (the same as
Leningrad), tradition lingers on.
Anglesey
Known as Môn Mam Cymru (Mother of Wales) –
because it produces corn for the whole country – this
low, square island (highest point only 710ft) sits solidly
beside the Menai Strait, linked to the outside world by
Telford’s great suspension bridge. Visitors invariably
make for the village with Britain’s longest name -
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliog
ogogoch, the spellcheck confuser – then for the great
Wharf Bay, before taking in the technicallysophisticated
castle at Beaumaris, constructed by
Edward I to subdue Welsh unrest. Today’s welcome is
rather more peaceful – and might just include an
aromatic Principality beer at South Stack lighthouse,
watching a fine Anglesey sunset.
Isle of Wight
Many believe this homely parallelogram, moored
just off Hampshire, has been preserved under a
Victorian glass dome. Not dull and dusty, you
understand, but trim and neat and sprightly.
Certainly, step off the ferry or Hovercraft and time
seems to slow, helping us appreciate the ‘magic in
miniature’. Look at the ex-Piccadilly Line trains
clattering along Ryde’s ancient pier; at the bursting
giftshops of perhaps-just-too-pretty Godshill, mecca
for tea-towel lovers of all ages; at the honeysuckledraped
cottages of Bonchurch, beloved of Dickens;
at the Italianate excesses of Osborne House, Queen
Victoria’s refuge in domesticity; and at the
regiments of Triumph Heralds enjoying retirement
by the sea. Ah yes, the sea: permanent backdrop to
cobweb-dispelling walks on Tennyson Down, to
spirited Cowes yacht races; to giddy views from the
Needles Battery, and to lined-up glass jars
containing the stripey sands of Alum Bay. There’s a
lot going on under that dome…
Inner Hebrides (N)
On the map these ragged islands look like an
explosion in a jigsaw factory. Heavily indented Mull
(with a 300-mile coastline) is the wettest,
harbouring otters, dolphins and whales; Skye,
changing colour with the light, unites Bonnie Prince
Charlie romanticism, Faerie Flag legends and superb
mountaineering in the mighty Cuillins. Fine fishing
abounds on Coll, and on Colonsay – flat by
Hebridean standards (unlike its celebrated beer).
Columba’s ancient Christian stronghold; of music on
haunting Staffa, basalt-columned inspiration to
Mendelssohn; and of majestic sea eagles, quartering
the skies above Canna. Surprise encounters lurk
everywhere – like the singing sands of Eigg
(orchestrated by squeaky quartz underfoot); like
West Indian beans washed ashore on Muck by the
Gulf Stream; or Kinloch Castle’s ghostly ‘orchestrion’
on Rum, a still-working Edwardian home
entertainment system awaiting its long-dead laird.
Isle of Man
Privileged tax-haven status; an Irish missionary and
Viking warrior heritage; higgledy-piggledy
landscapes; the surviving-against-the-odds Manx
language; a uniquely-structured parliamentary
government; its own currency and stamps; and
intriguing forms of wildlife like six-horned Loghtan
sheep, or tailless cats (ideal for estate agents
demonstrating the roominess of holiday homes): it’s
no surprise Britain’s largest offshore island attracts
financiers and fun-seekers alike. Among the latter,
steam train devotees rarely stop smiling. Rather
faster speeds define the annual motorcycle TT: laprecords
now averaging over 130mph are for the
ultra-brave only, and probably justify local belief in
the Little People. And if fairies aren’t your thing,
there’s always the 1930s legend of a farm on Dalby
Mountain frequented by Gef, the talking mongoose.
And that’s before you reach the pub.
Lindisfarne
Holy Island, reached by a mile-long tidal causeway
(complete with a raised safety refuge for the
foolhardy) is where St. Aidan, in around 635,
founded his Northumbrian community. The soaring
sandstone arches of the (now roofless) medieval
priory – a pilgrim destination for centuries - radiate
serenity and peace, alongside the Lutyens-restored
castle and its delightful Gertrude Jekyll garden. All
around flourish seals and seabirds, best viewed on
boat trips to the neighbouring (and all-absorbing)
Farne Islands. Note: make sure your clothing is not
www.roundandaboutssh.co.uk
all-absorbing, though: tern guano ruins hairdos, and
fulmar spit will live with you for ever….
Lundy
Where the Bristol Channel meets the Atlantic,
Lundy’s towering granite cliffs bear the brunt of
westerly gales and provide heady rock climbs. Pirate
stories abound, along with orchids, Sika deer, Soay
sheep and Lundy ponies – and countless birds. Over
400 species are recorded, including the puffins that
gave the island its original Norse name. The eastern
side is softer, with hanging woods and secret valleys
guaranteed to (re)awaken the spirit of discovery.
Once owned by the Heaven family, Lundy – logically
– masqueraded as the Kingdom of Heaven. On a
bright and breezy summer’s day, it’s highly
appropriate.
Inner Hebrides (S)
Tucked into the Firth of Clyde and easily reached
from Glasgow, Bute rapidly became a Victorian
holiday playground. Today’s visitors are still drawn
to 19th century eccentricities like Mount Stuart, an
impossibly ornate, gothic-fruit-cake mansion
boasting the world’s first heated indoor pool.
Thanks to its geology, Arran - potato-shaped like the
eponymous ‘seed tatties’ cultivated here - combines
a mild southern half with a wild north, and enjoys a
growing reputation with ‘foodies’. Malt whisky
lovers flock to Islay and its eight distilleries, those
preferring a peatier taste heading for south-of-theisland
producers. Jura, home to some 200 people
and 6,000 deer, remains one of Scotland’s
uncompromising wildernesses. Proof resides in its
giant whirlpool, Corryvreckan, merciless killer of the
over-confident or under-unprepared – including
George Orwell, author of 1984.
Pembrokeshire Islands
and rare, shiny-black choughs – all part of a marine
spectacle relieved by the restorative calm of Caldey,
whose Cistercian monks sell island-produced
chocolate and perfume to day-trippers.
Outer Hebrides
Lewis and Harris, often thought of as separate islands,
share one land mass. Lewis centres its energies
around Stornoway, the only town in the archipelago,
whilst Harris reflects the colours of its mountains in
its prized tweed cloth. More important to the crofting
economy, though, is the machair, the grasslands of the
western shoreline. Their exceptional fertility comes
from the chalk content of wind-blown sand
(composed of pulverised seashells that reduce peat
soil acidity). In spring, when the machair is carpeted
with rare flowers, botanists fly in – some of them
landing on neighbouring Barra, on Britain’s only
beach runway. Other, as-far-as-you-can-see stretches
of white sand, notably on North and South Uist,
attract surfers from around the world. To travellers of
all kinds, the islands have always seemed enigmatic
and fascinating. According to ‘experts’, for instance,
Lewis’s brooding, ageless Callanish Standing Stones
might once have been a UFO base…
Orkney
In 1813 a local sailor shot the last local great auk,
and a mystical species disappeared from Orkney
(not, note, ‘the Orkneys’). Now things are rather
better: one in six of Britain’s seabirds nests here.
They’re best seen on Rousay (called ‘Egypt of the
North’ because its oldest dwellings pre-date the
Pyramids); on low-lying Sanday; and on North
Ronaldsay, sharing the beach with seaweed-eating
sheep whose meat, allegedly, is an acquired taste.
Prime ornithologist’s delight, though, is far-off Fair
Isle (sturdy hats essential to deflect head-banging
skuas) where, like so much in these islands, the
20 x R&A GODALMING, CRANLEIGH & VILLAGES
knitwear patterns are Norse in origin.
Immeasurably older are the prehistoric houses
preserved at Skara Brae, complete with clay-lined
stone boxes thought (by Scotland’s oldest library, in
Kirkwall, estd 1683) to have been fridges. Their
original users could never have imagined Orkney
today, with its oil industry or scheduled flights able
to link Westray and Papa Westray in under two
minutes. The poor great auk could never have
competed: it was flightless.
The Scilly Isles
Diminutive specks in vast oceans always fascinate,
shifting perception and perspective. Scilly’s five
inhabited islands, plus 130 assorted rocky shards,
do just that For centuries protective, submerged
reefs have defused the Atlantic’s malevolence,
creating the shipwreck capital of the world: 18th
century beads and baubles still wash ashore on St
Agnes. Look out over the crystal-blue sea, glittering
in the sharp light, and the sense of secure isolation
intensifies, distorting both distant scale and close-up
detail. On St. Mary’s, for example, the 300-ton Logan
Rock can be pivoted by hand to break matchsticks
(there must be easier ways). Compare, too, Bryher’s
Lilliputian fields (crouched behind hedges
confusingly called ‘fences’) with the innumerable
sub-tropical blooms of Tresco’s Abbey Gardens
(‘Kew with the roof off’); or winter storm-watching
at Hell Bay with the summer seamanship of gig
racing. And then there’s the world’s smallest football
league, contested between two clubs, Woolpack
Wanderers and Garrison Gunners. On Scilly, ‘home’
and ‘away’, like time itself, have little meaning…
Life at the limits of Britain is not just about different
ways to make a fish pie. Our offshore residents have
always cherished independence and learned how to
get the best out of their environment, be it remote,
beautiful, gale-swept – or all three. Such places
fringing our horizons are there to be discovered and
safeguarded – and they’re all around us.
especially for those intrepid men who like a bit of
adventure! On Friday 15th March the lecture will be The
History of Brooklands. If you like motor racing, then this is
the lecture for you. A historian from The Brooklands
Museum in Weybridge will be showing original film
footage from the race track's heyday in the 1930’s and
will tell us what life is like for the men and women in the
Armed Services. From leaving Brize Norton to being
stationed at Camp Bastion and then going on to the front
line, Graeme follows this progression and captures their
experiences, from the basics of day to day living to being
at the thin end of the wedge in conflict. Then on Friday
GODALMING, CRANLEIGH & VILLAGES R&A x 23
“If Momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy!”
I LOVE THIS phrase from the American south which
my American husband taught me! It is just so true,
isn’t it? And I’m going to put a slight twist on it...
If Momma ain’t healthy, ain’t nobody healthy! Or
Healthy Mum = Healthy Family...
As a mother our first priority is our kids, right? And
then our spouse/partner, yes? And then... work, the
dog, parents, friends, household shopping etc. Is
there something else? Oh yes, ourselves.
One of the mantra’s of our time is “I’m so busy” –
how often do we hear ourselves and others saying
that? These days when someone asks how we are,
the probable answer isn’t “fine” it is now “I’m so
busy”, and yes of course we are. But...? The 'but' is if
we don’t look after ourselves then we can’t look
after anyone else. If we don’t eat well, stay fit and
provide our family with decent food, then “ain’t nobody
healthy”.
So, the 'but' is that, as busy women with a myriad of
responsibilities on our plate, we tend to neglect our
own basic needs. We start to skip meals, to eat on
the run, to grab packaged snacks, to get take aways
24 x R&A GODALMING, CRANLEIGH & VILLAGES
and processed food, to eat late. We think we are
getting exercise because we are running around like
headless chickens, but we don’t feel energised. We
never seem to stop. We make excuses about our expanding
waistline, our heavier upper arms – claiming
its normal as we get older (it doesn’t have to be).
We pour a large G & T or glass of wine when we get
home, or once the kids have gone to bed, and that
continues into the evening, sometimes even replacing
dinner.
Maybe you’d like to lose a bit of weight but it’s all so
tiring, and the thought of cooking different meals
for everyone is exhausting in itself.
I understand, I really do... I’ve been there, done that
but nine years ago I realised the only way we can be
effective in all these roles is to look after ourselves
first. All the time I talk to women who are exhausted
and they say “Karen I haven’t got time to look after
myself/eat proper food/get exercise/get any relaxation...”,
and I have to help turn this round because
if you don’t then you are short changing everyone.
Very often change comes only when there is a
trauma and this is true of eating changes too. A
friend of mine has four boys under 17. Two years
ago she was diagnosed with cancer. She had chemo
and a nasty operation, and while she is now fine
(hopefully permanently), she discovered during this
time the importance that real food plays in a healthy
lifestyle. So the children now all totally appreciate
the value of fresh meat, fish and vegetables – they
help keep mum alive, they help keep them ALL
healthy. Obviously it is better to create change without
trauma. Have some fun with this – take your
children to farmers' markets, farms, food festivals –
let them start to develop some passion for real food.
Eating healthy and living healthy is essential for well
being – yours and your family’s - the reality really is
that a Healthy Mum = Healthy Family. Easy words I
know, but it honestly can be easier that it might appear
on the surface.
Do you find yourself cooking one meal for your kids
and one for you and your spouse/partner? Or even
one for everyone but eating things that you wouldn’t
January 2013
necessarily eat if it was 'just you'? A lot of women I
talk to use the excuse that they have to cater for
everyone else, and 'else' doesn’t like certain foods, to
justify not eating well themselves. But how about we
turn this on its head? A typical pattern I see is frozen
breaded chicken drumsticks, cooked and served with
Smash, baked beans and ketchup for the kids and a
processed ready meal possibly with frozen vegetables
for the parents.
Processed foods and take away foods, however
tempting, are not nutritious like properly prepared
food. So, it’s about finding quick, easy, ways to have
real food on the table that everyone will eat and
enjoy...starting with you.
First of all we need to look at what you want to
achieve. Now, I think it is fair to assume that what
you want is a happy healthy family...right? Well, we
need to start with YOU. Put you right there at the
top of the pack – the head of the house – not at the
end of the list. I’m serious, because YOU are, most
likely, the one that hand on heart knows what is best
for everyone, and you are the one that can create
that. You need to carve out time for yourself to relax,
to exercise and to put some healthy eating patterns
in place.
And also some re-assurance and encouragement –
it takes about seven tastes of something for someone
to go from 'can’t stand' to accepting (not liking),
so don’t be discouraged if at first your kids
don’t like certain foods. They will get used to them
and whilst they are you can add other flavourings to
help. Of course never force anyone to eat anything,
that’s a sure fire way to fail and have them avoid that
food for years! Let them try everything and expand
their taste range, it will make life so much easier and
more enjoyable for them not to mention healthier.
Get your kids involved in food preparation; they will
feel much more engaged if you do. And gradually/eventually
this will even become a time saver
for you.
In an ideal world what would YOU like to eat?
Chicken, fish, lamb nicely seasoned... with fresh vegetables?
Right, so we’ll have that as the core of the
meal and then modify and add to it accordingly.
I have hundreds if not thousands of recipes on my
site at your disposal at www.aroundthetablewithkaren.com.
With ALL these you can puree or chop,
www.roundandaboutssh.co.uk
family focus
mask or disguise, according to your children’s ages
and preferences but give them the chance to eat
real food, freshly prepared, to help with the preparation
so they start to appreciate the process.
And let them play with their food! Let them try different
sauces and flavourings on different foods,
tomato puree and natural food colourings, let them
grate cheese on their vegetables... if they have fun
you’ll have fun, and everyone will be eating healthy.
If you personally want to lose a bit of weight, then
keep your plate to the main protein (fish, meat,
eggs) and vegetables and steer clear of the heavy
starches (carbs) rice, pasta, potato, bread, anything
with flour in it. Gradually introduce alternatives to
the heavy starches for everyone but initially just
focus on you and then you can keep everyone else
happy at the same time as keeping yourself happy
– and if they like the results they see you will be
leading by example.
If you would like a chat to see about some more detailed
help – maybe looking at what you are eating
now and making suggestions, doing a kitchen review,
having a one day intensive or coming up with
tailor made eating plans each week, then email me
Karen@aroundthetablewithkaren.com or call me on
07595 316613 and let’s see what would work best
for you.
I wish you joyful eating and a happy healthy
January 2013
This month, we take a look at a couple of the other
options when it comes to Senior Living - Care at
home and Retirement villages.
Live-in your life at home
PEOPLE OF ALL age groups need care, but this is more
likely when they are at a point in their lives where they
are vulnerable for one reason or another. An elderly
person leaving hospital will often need care at home.
Furthermore, an increasing number of people are
living with conditions such as Dementia, Parkinson’s,
MS or Epilepsy, require constant 24-hour support.
Their needs vary, from help with everyday tasks,
including dressing, cooking or shopping, to remaining
part of the community and trying to lead a more active
life.
Whatever their circumstances, and whatever their
age group, certain people who need care around the
clock may decide to stay in the comfort of their homes.
This is possible through ‘live-in’ care. With live-in care,
a person is able to live in the comfort of their own home
and they receive daily support, around the clock, from a
carer who lives with them. This person is highly
www.roundandaboutssh.co.uk
focus onfocus senior onliving pets
trained and is chosen because of their skills, knowledge
and experience. Most importantly, they are the type of
person that you would like to have in your home.
There are many pluses to live-in care. Being in your
own home means that you can live with your partner,
continue to be part of the community and receive
family and friends at home. It also means that you can
retain the love and affection of your pet, and continue
to enjoy your garden because it’s right there on your
doorstep, come rain, snow or sunshine. It also provides
you with greater flexibility , so you can eat when you
wish to, and you can go to bed and get up when you
want to.
Depending on each person’s specific needs, live-in
carers follow a bespoke personalised care plan that is
developed with the person being cared for, their family
members, and where appropriate, healthcare
professionals. Having a live-in carer is more than
simply looking after you and your home. It’s about
understanding you and your needs - how you want to
live your life and helping you to get the very most from
it.
Natalie Ranger-Sizeland is a registered nurse who in 2008 set
up Loga Care- www.logacare.com - a local provider of live-in
care services.
Live life the way you wish
With more people choosing to remain in the comfort
and familiar surroundings of their own homes, live-in
care has become a popular alternative to residential homes.
Your personal carer lives with you and helps with almost
everything, including personal care, shopping, cooking and
social activities. Loga Care provides:
• Fully trained and highly experienced carers
• Personal 24-hour support tailored to your needs
• An affordable alternative to residential care
• Complete care for you, whatever your age or circumstances
Worplesdon View, a brand new purpose-built 78bed
Lane community.
A Memory Lane community within a Barchester
care home is an environment that is adapted to
make sense to the person living with dementia. A
person-centred home will be an environment that
helps people to feel safe and emotionally secure.
Equally, it will be a home which provides comfort
and a sense of belonging that also accommodates
visiting relatives and friends.
At Worplesdon View, we make the best out of our
environment by using more ‘cues’ and couple this
with appropriate support. Our Memory Lane communities
incorporate person-centred design in
the use of colour and cues to help individuals navigate
through the home. When these cues are used
carefully, they help people living with dementia to
make sense of where they are and of their surroundings
more generally, which helps in feeling
safe and comfortable. The Communities also ac-
Why a move to a Retirement
Village is good for your health
FEELINGS OF ISOLATION and vulnerability are
frequently a consequence of getting older, no matter
how independent you are. However, recent studies
assessing the effect of a move to a specialised
accommodation, such as retirement villages like
Bramshott Place Village in Liphook, or Durrants Village
in Faygate, reveal many positive results.
According to research, 75% of residents in specialist
retirement accommodation have not stayed overnight
in hosptial since moving there, and 60% who had
stayed in hospital said that they had found it easier to
return home since moving.
The majority of people feel happier in their new
homes and are glad they made the move. With more
facilities and like-minded people in a similar situation
to themselves around them, feelings of isolation
decrease, leading to 92% of residents saying they are
very happy or contented with improved emotional
well-being. 64% also feel that their physical health
improves after such a move.
There are economic benefits too. The homes
designed for retirement living are in general smaller
and better insulated than those that retired people
have downsized from, so are cheaper to run and more
comfortable to live in. These homes usually have
features especially for older people such as switches
and sockets that are easier to reach, walk-in showers,
and an emergency contact system. Apartment buildings
will have a lift, and ground floor accommodation will be
designed for easy access too; all comforting features if
mobility and fear of falls is starting to affect your
quality of life.
Stress from worrying about maintaining the house
and garden becomes a thing of the past. All
maintenance is provided by the management, and
although this is all paid for through the service charge,
economies of scale usually mean that it costs less than if
these chores had been carried out individually.
Perhaps best of all – and something that you can’t
really put a price on – is the feeling of camaraderie that
comes with a move to a retirement village. New friends
and interests, or the chance to spend more time on
established ones, and the knowledge that you never
need to be alone unless you choose to be – all mean that
life really can begin at 55!
Les Amitiés Françaises start the new year with a
programme for many tastes, from art and literature to
history and some geography (Mont Blanc); and why so
many French people live in London, said now to be the
city with the sixth largest French population (so our food
can’t be all that bad!). They have plans for celebrations
for Twelfth Night and Bastille Day, one old and traditional
the other a modern revolution. The annual outing with a
French flavour will be to the Wallace Collection in London,
a town house with a superb collection of pictures and
furniture. As usual, meetings will be held in the Baptist
Church Hall, Queen Street, Godalming, most of them on
Thursday evenings but with two on Monday afternoons.
The Society offers a great opportunity to practise your
French and learn more about our neighbour with whom
we seem to have a love/hate relationship. The first
meeting, on Thursday 17th January at 7.30pm in the
Baptist Church hall, is about the French of today. How can
they be so different from the British in every way? Does
being on an island make our temperament, outlook and
history distinctive? No easy answers! Further information
available from John Petty on 01483 861974.
The Wey Valley Decorative and Fine Arts Society starts
9.45am. King George may have been mad and credited
with losing the Colonies but he was also a great patron of
the arts and a discerning collector. Why not come along
and learn more? The Society offers a monthly programme
of varied and fascinating talks by first class speakers.
There are also special interest days, visits and an annual
Wonersh and District Garden Club would like to remind
Members that in future no meeting will be held in the
month of January. Due to the inclement weather in the last
two years it was decided to discontinue the January
meeting but to hold a meeting in August, which previously
had not been the case. The committee would also like to
thank all members for making 2012 a successful year for
the club. An interesting and varied programme was
arranged with speakers, demonstrations, as well as the
usual Spring, Summer and Autumn Shows and the annual
outing (to Greys Court near Henley-on-Thames) was well
attended. After the concerns of the previous year, when it
was unclear whether or not the club would be able to
continue, the club is delighted to be able to report that the
membership has now reached 40. However, there is a need
to expand the membership still further and with this in
mind an even more ambitious programme for 2013 is being
arranged. If you are interested in joining the club do give
Graham Payne a ring on 01483 893627; note that
membership is not restricted to those living in Wonersh.
Looking ahead, the next meeting will be held in the
Memorial Hall at the new time of 7.30pm on Tuesday 5th
February, when the annual ‘Snowdrop Competition’ (a
vase of 5 snowdrops) will be held, together with a talk by
Mr Norman Choat entitled ‘Wild Surrey – Landscapes and
wildlife’.
Farncombe Music Club is starting 2013 with two
absolutely cracking shows. On Friday 11th January, Aziz
played guitar for the Stone Roses (post John Squire),
continues to write for Paul Weller and Ian Brown
(contributing three tracks to Weller's latest album, 'Sonik
Kicks'), has recently toured in Europe with Steven Wilson
for 'Grace for Drowning' (appearing on the live album) and,
in April 2012, released his own long-awaited second album,
'Rusholme Rock'. Ady Johnson whose debut album "Tell
The Worry Dolls" has met with critical acclaim has shown
with his live performances that he is not only
talented but also has that vital extra - charisma. 38
Keeping your home safe and secure
With the prominence of theft ranging from
manhole covers, “scrap metal”, garden and
farm machinery to farmers’ diesel tanks
being syphoned out at night we all need to be
more proactive in preventing access. This
has led to an increasing requirement for
security around homes and business
premises, to prevent vandals and thieves
gaining entry to sites and buildings.
Portcullis Electric Gates, having been
established for over 25 years has
considerable experience and an excellent
team of engineers. This enables us to
provide the solution for securing property
for many individuals including a number of
celebrities who require privacy and
confidentiality along with security for their
property.
Many people think that automatic gates are
quite simple. However, the control system is
quite ingenious, making it possible to control
the gates in many ways. For example coded
access keypads can be programed to open at
a pre-set time in the morning then closing at
night, only allowing certain vehicles through;
intercom systems can ring the house phone
from the gates and if you are out, will ring
your mobile phone so that you can open the
gates wherever you are, even if you are
sitting on the beach in the Bahamas!
GODALMING, CRANLEIGH & VILLAGES R&A x 39
Claremont Landscape Garden, the National
Trust property near Esher, in Surrey, is not a
stereotypical garden full of herbaceous
borders and flower beds but a tranquil, 49 acre
landscape garden. It is a green oasis with a
variety of predominately native trees and
shrubs that offer a variety of colour at different
times of the year.
In spring there are little pockets of snowdrops,
daffodils and bluebells dotted around the
garden, with Azaleas and Rhododendrons
providing colour in late spring and early
summer. Autumn brings a pallet of autumnal
colour and the bare winter trees open up
stunning views in the low winter sunshine.
The landscape garden is a splendid
preserved example of the 18th century
The play area at Claremont
Claremont
One of the first & finest
gardens of the English
Landscape Style
picturesque garden. Claremont looks
beautiful whatever the season with its lake,
grass amphitheatre and island with pavilion.
Claremont was created and developed by
some of the greatest names in garden
history, including Sir John Vanbrugh,
Charles Bridgeman and ‘Capability Brown’,
but it was William Kent who had the
influence over the garden we see today.
The first gardens were begun in 1715 for
Thomas Pelham Hollis, the Duke of
Newcastle, and later the delights of
Claremont were famed throughout Europe -
it was described as “the noblest of any in
Europe”. Since 1975 the National Trust has
been restoring the layout following years of
neglect, winning the coveted Europa Nostra
award for large scale restoration in 1980.
During the 19th century, Claremont became
a royal estate when it was purchased as a
home for Princess Charlotte, daughter of
George IV, and her husband Prince Leopold
of Saxe-Coburg. Thus began a royal
connection with Claremont which lasted for
over a hundred years, through the reign of
Queen Victoria until the death in 1922 of the
Duchess of Albany (widow of Prince Leopold,
Duke of Albany, the fourth son of Queen
Victoria).
January 2013
It was between 1922 and 1949 when the estate
became divided and developed. The pleasure
grounds, which we now know as the landscape
garden, were also due for development but
fortunately the plan never materialised. The
site remained more or less intact and after the
National Trust’s acquisition in 1949 was able
to be kept in ‘cold storage’ until a generous
bequest from the Slater Foundation revived the
fortunes of the garden once again. What
remain for the visitor today are the most
important parts of the original landscape.
Nearly 300 years on, the Garden attracts over
160,000 visitors a year and offers a pleasant
experience for all the family that has been
enjoyed by many generations. Enjoy a gentle
stroll around the lake, a brisk walk around the
garden, a lazy picnic under an oak tree where
Queen Victoria once played as a child, or take
in the panoramic views as once enjoyed by
Clive of India.
During school holidays, there is always a fun
Any visit to Claremont is incomplete without a
trip to the tearoom with its freshly baked
scones and coffee, tempting homemade cakes
“Turn Right at Land’s End” by John Merrill - the
first man to successfully achieve the feat in 1978. John
Merrill became the first person to walk the entire
coastline of Britain, averaging 26 miles per day with 50lbs
on his back for 10 months. He climbed the three highest
mountains, Snowdon, Scafell and Ben Nevis, drank 529
pints of milk, ate1,511 bars of chocolate and wore out
three pairs of boots and 33 pairs of socks. What’s more,
he raised more than £45,000 for charity and his
outstanding personal achievement earned him a place in
the Guinness Book of Records. Tom is aiming to raise
As promised, Chiddingfold Cinema is back with a bang in
2013. Over the Christmas break they have been working
through the replies to the questionnaire they circulated,
and they are pleased to announce some new features for
the New Year. First, although most were happy with the
regular Thursday screenings, many people asked if films
could be shown on other days of the week. They are now
going to try and please both groups and show an even
42 x R&A GODALMING, CRANLEIGH & VILLAGES
greater variety of movies by aiming to screen at least two
films each month, one on their regular Thursday, and
another later in the month, usually on Friday or Saturday.
Secondly, they will be introducing reduced ticket prices
for children younger than 15 years old. Their new child
rate will be just £3 per ticket. The very popular Season
Tickets will continue to be available but these will only be
used for adult tickets for the time being. So what’s coming
up? On Friday 18th January, Chiddingfold Cinema presents
“Anna Karenina”. The doors open at 7.30pm and the film
starts at 8pm. It stars Keira Knightley as Anna Karenina
and Jude Law as Karenin. It’s a costume drama adapted by
Tom Stoppard from Tolstoy's classic novel, set in the high
society of late nineteenth-century Tsarist Russia. An
unhappily married young aristocrat leaves her older
husband to embark on an affair with a dashing and
wealthy cavalry officer. Meanwhile, the seemingly fixed
world around them begins to change rapidly. I have seen
this film and it’s definitely worth seeing but I can say that
in our party the ladies definitely enjoyed it more than the
blokes! Looking ahead they will be showing Argo on
Thursday 7th February. The Doors open at 7.30pm and
the film starts at 8pm. I don’t know much about this film
but it stars Ben Affleck as Tony Mendez.
Grayshott Folk Club is fast becoming one of the most
Look After Your Liver
IT’S JANUARY AND we’re all thinking we better cut
out the naughty snacks and reduce the alcohol. But
have you really thought why you are doing this? It’s
for the sake of your whole body, of course, but especially
your liver.
The liver is an amazing organ; if your heart is a
pump and your bowels the waste disposal plant, the
liver is the manufacturing, processing and recycling
centre of the body. It is estimated that the liver performs
over 5,000 biochemical functions, only about
200 of which are understood. It is the largest single
organ in the body, weighing about 1.5kg.
Let me just give you a very brief insight into the
huge range of processes and activities the liver is involved
in. Most people know the liver is involved in
breaking down alcohol, but did you know it is generally
involved in detoxification (or breakdown) of
many unwanted chemicals, including drugs as well
as naturally occurring chemicals such as hormones
and blood cells that are old and in need of disposal?
It is also vitally important in the regulation of blood
sugar levels; it plays an important role in the conversion
of sunlight into the active form of vitamin D;
and also converts the inactive thyroid hormone -
thyroxine - into the active form. The liver is also an
important store of sugar, vitamins, minerals and
even blood in the body. It has an important role in
digestion, helping us to break down fats and absorb
our nutrients, especially the vitamins that are only
soluble in fat such as vitamins A and E.
Did you know that the liver has a very important role
in immune function? All blood from the digestive
system goes first to the liver to be filtered before it
goes round the rest of the body. Over a litre of blood
passes through the liver every minute, where it is
cleansed of bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, yeasts,
tumour cells and other debris.
This just scratches the surface of the various important
roles of the liver, but I hope it is enough to mo-
46 x R&A GODALMING, CRANLEIGH & VILLAGES
tivate you to want to look after your liver better.
When the liver is over-worked or ‘sluggish’, you can
feel heavy, bloated and tired. You may even find that
it aches in the right side of your abdomen or lower
right hand side ribs at the back. You are likely to be
more prone to headaches, and if you are a women,
PMS symptoms. Your skin can look sallow and your
complexion spotty.
So what should you do to look after your liver?
Firstly, and most obviously, try to reduce all toxic
chemicals that you are in contact with, which means
far more than just reducing alcohol (although that’s
a good start!). Think about reducing all processed
and synthetic food and drink, especially fizzy drinks
and food or drink with flavourings, colourings and
other additives. Try where possible to buy organic
food which contains no harmful pesticide or insecticide
residues. Don’t forget drugs are detoxified in
the liver, so try to resist just reaching for a paracetomol
every time you have a headache. The more
you burden the liver with these chemicals, the more
likely you are to get headaches in the first place.
Also think about household chemicals, toiletries and
cosmetics which contain a vast array of synthetic
January 2013
and toxic chemicals, and try to move to brands
which are natural or contain chemicals that are less
harsh. It is estimated each adult body contains over
200 synthetic chemicals. Think about your work environment,
so if you are driving all day you may
want to buy an air filter unit for the car to detoxify
the exhaust chemicals you are breathing in. If you
work with harsh chemicals such as paints, sprays,
printing, glues etc., you may want to check you are
taking all possible precautions. For you it may be
advisable to consult someone who can help you
with an annual specific detox of these chemicals.
Taking a regular sauna can be useful as we can excrete
many (but not all) unwanted toxins via the skin.
Make sure you also look after you bowels. As all
blood from the intestines goes straight to the liver
for filtering, so if the bowels are unhealthy or ‘leaky',
the liver is the one that takes the brunt of this. Consider
taking a regular probiotic supplement or seeking
help if you have any symptoms in this area,
especially if you are at all constipated, which is when
we don’t pass one or two full and formed bowel motions
with ease every day.
Try and ensure you eat foods and drinks which supply
the liver with the nutrients it needs to function.
Most fruits and vegetables will be good for the liver
as long as they have not been fried. Particularly useful
are globe artichokes, grapefruit, garlic, fennel,
and watercress. Beetroot and carrot are also very
good. You can make or buy these as fresh juices, and
if you have a juicer, a good combination is beetroot,
carrot, apple, ginger and lemon - and is surprisingly
delicious too!
We all know we should drink plenty of water but
how much? The simplest advice is to listen to your
body, and drink when you are thirsty. Making sure
www.roundandaboutssh.co.uk
health & fitness
your urine is a pale yellow is also a good guide.
Stress of all kinds has a major negative effect on the
liver. It impairs the detoxification mechanisms, and
its immune function is also affected. This may explain
why someone who is in remission from cancer
but then has a stressful event happen often has a
return or a ‘new’ cancer appear in the liver. So helping
yourself manage your stress levels is one of the
most important things you can do. Some people
find yoga or meditation helps, for others walking in
nature is calming. Others find counselling, herbs or
homeopathy are useful. Why not try giving yourself
a new stress management strategy this year? Ask for
help from professional practitioners and teachers if
you need it.
The good news is that the liver is the organ most
able to repair and regenerate (apart from the skin).
So if all you do is one or two of these things, your
liver will thank you for it. But don’t forget the old
adage that ‘you may feel worse before you feel better’.
If you do feel worse at first, it may be your liver
was really struggling before and is now taking the
opportunity to do some much needed clearing out.
Or it may be that you are doing too much to start
with. Take it steady and it should pass in 4-5 days. If
however you are at all concerned, consult a Naturopath.
Why not start the New Year on the right foot and do
some gentle cleansing? Just make sure it is not just
for January but is a fresh start with changes you can
stick to all year long.
Surrey Heat Basketball
I am 10 years old and my Dad took my
brother, some friends and me to a Surrey
Heat basketball game, Surrey Heat
against the Glasgow Rocks at the brilliant
Surrey Sports Park in Guildford.
I am a big sports fan but I didn’t know a lot
about basketball. The atmosphere was
electric and there was never a second of
boredom. We were so fortunate that in some
of the intervals we were chosen to take part
in little challenges to entertain the crowd.
My brother was invited to join in a go-kart
race against our friend Jacob and I got
chosen to do a basketball challenge where I
had to throw the ball into the hoop from the
half way line. The crowd still cheered me even
though I missed!
The funniest interval entertainment was
when Scorcher (the Surrey Heat mascot)
did a slam dunk running and jumping high from
a trampoline!
The interval entertainment enhanced the
exciting game, basketball is fantastically
fast with end-to-end action to keep
everyone excited. I really enjoyed it and the
score was 84-78 to Surrey Heat, and I
can’t wait to go again!
Take your kids to see Surrey Heat at
Surrey Sports Park in Guildford, it’s one of
the country’s best teams, and your kids will
love it!
Visitors to St Nicholas’ Church in Peper Harow are not
the only ones to open the door and experience a ‘wow’
moment. The transformation from burnt-out shell
building that is light, exquisitely decorated and full of
beautifully detailed stone carving has also wowed the
“We are thrilled that the skills and expertise that went
by the Stone Federation of Great Britain,” said David. “The
interior of the church is so welcoming. The reconstruction
venue for quiet or away days. The architects and
craftsmen did a brilliant job retaining its history and also
bringing in modern features such as solar panels.” Marc
Wiese explained that three arches in the arcade between
the Nave and North Aisle which were designed by Pugin
had been severely damaged in the fire, requiring 95%
reconstruction in new stone by stonemason Kevin Harding
How is this for a
perfect Sunday in
the New Year? A cast iron
casserole dish full of wonderful, meltingly tender
beef covered in wine or beer and slowly cooking in
the oven whilst you wrap up warm and hit those
beautiful Surrey Hills for a good, long walk. When you
return home, light a fire, open a bottle of wine,
prepare a few side dishes, and before too long you can
tuck into a fabulous winter warmer.
Julia Child's Beef Bourguignon
Winter Warmers
with the Editor
Julia Child was an American chef, author, and television
personality. She is recognized for bringing French cuisine to
the American public with her debut cookbook, Mastering the
Art of French Cooking, and her subsequent television
programs in America. She died in 2004, and was the subject of
the film Julie & Julia, which was released in 2009. This recipe
has been adapted from Mastering the Art of French Cooking.
Serves 6-8.
Ingredients:
175g lardons
3½ tbsp olive oil
1½kg shin of beef, cut into 5cm cubes
1 onion, sliced
Salt and pepper
2 tbsp flour
1 bottle red wine, young and full bodied
750ml beef stock
1 tbsp tomato paste
2 cloves mashed garlic
½ tsp thyme
1 bay leaf, crumbled
20 small white onions
60g butter
Bouquet garni (parsley stalks, thyme, bay leaf)
500g mushrooms, quartered
50 x R&A GODALMING, CRANLEIGH & VILLAGES
I have used shin of beef in these recipes, which is a
very underated and great value cost. Even the sainted
Delia Smith agrees. She makes a case for using shin –
explaining for years she was put off by its
"unappealing" appearance, until she realised the
connective tissue she found so unattractive would
melt during cooking, adding extra flavour and richness
to the sauce. "Now," she concludes in her Complete
Cookery Course, "for an old-fashioned brown stew, I
wouldn't use anything else." I urge you to try it.
Method:
1. Preheat oven to 225C.
2. Simmer the lardons for 10 minutes in water. Drain and dry,
and sauté in 1 tablespoon of the olive oil in a flameproof
casserole over moderate heat for 2 to 3 minutes to brown
lightly. Remove to side dish with a slotted spoon.
3. Heat the remaining oil in the casserole until almost
smoking. Dry beef in paper towels; it will not brown if it is
damp. Add beef, a few pieces at a time, and sauté until nicely
browned on all sides. Add it to the lardons. In the same fat,
brown the sliced onionss. Pour out the excess fat.
4. Return the beef and bacon to the casserole and toss with ½
teaspoon salt and ½ teaspoon pepper. Then sprinkle on the
flour and toss again to coat the beef lightly. Put the casserole
uncovered in middle position of preheated oven for 4
minutes. Toss the meat again and return to oven for 4
minutes (this browns the flour and cover the meat with a light
crust). Remove casserole and turn oven down to 150C.
5. Stir in wine and 500-600ml stock, just enough so that the
meat is barely covered. Add the tomato paste, garlic, herbs
and lardons. Bring to a simmer on top of the stove. Cover
casserole and set in lower third of oven. Regulate heat so that
liquid simmers very slowly for 3 to 4 hours. The meat is done
when a fork pierces it easily.
6. While the beef is cooking, prepare the onions and
mushrooms. Heat 1½ tablespoons of butter with 1 tablespoon
of the oil until bubbling in a frying pan. Add onions and sauté
over moderate heat for about 10 minutes, rolling them so
they will brown as evenly as possible. Add the remaining
stock, salt and pepper to taste and the bouquet garni. Cover
and simmer slowly for 40 to 50 minutes until the onions are
perfectly tender but hold their shape, and the liquid has
evaporated. Remove herb bouquet and set onions aside.
7. In the same pan, heat the remaining oil and butter over
high heat. As soon as you see butter has begun to subside,
January 2013
indicating it is hot enough, add mushrooms. Toss and shake
pan for 4 to 5 minutes. As soon as they have begun to brown
lightly, remove from heat. When the meat is tender, pour the
contents of the casserole into a sieve set over a saucepan.
8. Return the beef and lardons to the casserole. Distribute the
cooked onions and mushrooms on top. Skim fat off sauce in
saucepan, and simmer sauce for 1-2 minutes, skimming off
additional fat as it rises. You should have about 600ml of
sauce thick enough to coat a spoon lightly. If too thin, boil it
down rapidly. If too thick, add more stock or water. Taste
carefully for seasoning.
9. Pour the sauce over meat and vegetables. Cover and
simmer 2 to 3 minutes, basting the meat and vegetables with
the sauce several times. Serve in casserole, or arrange stew
on a platter surrounded with potatoes, noodles or rice, and
decorated with parsley.
Brooklands Beef
This is my take on a Carbonnarde of Beef, adapted from a BBC
Good Food recipe. I have named it after the beer I used, which
was Brooklands Gold Star which is produced by the Hog’s Back
Brewery in Tongham. It is a refreshing commemorative ale to
acknowledge the racing heroes of the famous Brooklands
Racing Circuit in Weybridge, who fought to win the “Gold
Star” trophy.
Serves 4-6.
Ingredients:
1¼kg shin of beef , cut into 5cm cubes
500ml Brooklands Gold Star or a similar ale
3 garlic cloves, chopped
2 bay leaves
3 tbsp plain flour, seasoned with salt and pepper
2-3 tbsp olive oil
250g lardons
2 large carrots, sliced
2 large onions, sliced
1 leek, sliced
1 tbsp tomato purée
400ml beef stock
A couple of sprigs of fresh thyme
A handful of parsley , chopped
www.roundandaboutssh.co.uk
in the kitchen
Method:
1. Marinate the beef overnight in the ale with the garlic and
bay leaves. The next day, drain the beef from the marinade,
reserving the marinade, garlic and bay leaves. Pat the meat
dry with kitchen paper and toss it in the seasoned flour until
evenly coated. Shake off any excess flour.
2. Heat 2 tbsp of the olive oil in a large flameproof casserole
until hot. Fry the beef in 3-4 batches for about 5 minutes per
batch, stirring occasionally, until it is a rich golden brown all
over. You may need to add a little more oil between batches
but make sure it is hot again before adding the next batch.
3. Remove the meat with a slotted spoon to a plate and set
aside. Don't worry if the bottom of the casserole is starting to
brown, this all adds to the flavour of the finished dish.
4. Lower the heat to medium and fry the lardons in the
casserole for 6-8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until crisp and
golden. Scoop them out with a slotted spoon and set aside
with the beef.
5. Preheat the oven to fan 140C/conventional 160C/gas 3. Tip
the carrots, onions and leek into the casserole and fry, stirring
occasionally, until they start to brown - this takes about 12
minutes. Spoon in the tomato purée and continue to cook for
2 minutes, stirring constantly.
6. Add the beef and pour in the reserved marinade, garlic and
bay leaves. Bring to a simmer, scraping any sticky bits off the
bottom of the pan, then add all the beef stock and thyme to
the casserole.
7. Season with salt and pepper and bring everything to the
boil. Remove from the heat. Cover with a lid and cook in the
oven for 3-4 hours, stirring once halfway through. (The
carbonnade may now be left to cool and frozen for up to 1
month. Add 100ml/31⁄2 fl oz more stock to the sauce when
reheating.)
8. When the beef is ready, taste for seasoning and add more
salt and pepper if you think it needs it. Scatter the chopped
parsley over the top and serve straight from the casserole,
with creamy mash.
One Day Seasonal Workshops for 2013
Some ideas for one day practical workshops from Cathie’s Gardening
School, Secretts Garden Centre, Milford.
This year I thought I would get organised and plan some
workshops for the coming year. It’s a cold and quiet time in
the garden but Spring will be here soon, and there is always
something of interest to see and do no matter what time of
the year it is!
Why not come and join us at Cathie’s Gardening School for
something you would like to learn abou, as well as a fun
sociable day out with like-minded people?
January 31st : Living Willow Weaving
We have been growing willow in the teaching garden for a
couple of years now and now have the facilities to offer the
opportunity to cut, prepare and weave your own living
willow. Not only will you learn how to prune and train willow
plants, they can also be propagated and woven successfully at
this time of the year. You may take home any sculptures that
you create.
February 21st : Pruning for beginners
Wisteria, Roses and Clematis cause more concern for
gardeners than any other plants, so why not come along and
learn how to prune them correctly? There are extensive
facilities at Secretts to teach this subject as well as plenty of
plants to practice on.
March 21st : Propagation from seed
Most people have tried to grow plants from seed but not
always successfully. We can advise you on composts,
containers and the skills required to raise plants from seed.
Many seeds have been collected from the Gardening School
and have been cleaned and prepared by the students.
April 25th : Grow Your Own Fruit and Veg
Always a popular workshop and has in the past included
building raised beds, growing vegetables from seed and
tubers as well as potting up fruit and learning to prepare a
cropping plan. A good fun day organised in the teaching
garden and the greenhouses at Secretts.
May 30th : Beekeeping for beginners
Now in my third year of beekeeping, I am being encouraged
to run workshops to encourage new beekeepers. This day
offers you the opportunity to learn what is involved, how
much it will cost, time required and anything else that you
have been using as an excuse not to keep bees. We may be
even able to taste some of the honey.
June 27th : Summer Pruning and Training
Now is the time to prune that group of Spring flowering
shrubs that cause concern for many gardeners. They include
Forsythia, Weigela, Deutzia and Philadelphus. Not easy to
master but very rewarding. It’s also the time to trim hedges
and sculpt evergreens into fabulous shapes like ‘cloud
pruning’.
July 25th : Weed Identification and control
We have lots of weeds and wild flowers in the teaching
54 x R&A GODALMING, CRANLEIGH & VILLAGES
garden because there are lots of people interested in learning
about them, that’s my excuse anyway. Weeds come in many
guises and last from a few weeks to many years. Here is an
opportunity to learn how to recognise weeds and deal with
them accordingly.
August 29th : Bonsai Your Plants!
This is another form or pruning and training plants to keep
them small. Although it takes years to grow Bonsai plants, you
have to start somewhere and this is the opportunity to learn
what to do on a practical level without having to pay out
thousands for a Japanese work of art! You can take your plant
home with you to nurture of course.
September 26th : Autumn and Winter Containers
Summer bedding is always popular but many gardeners do
not continue with Autumn and Winter colour of which there
is an enormous choice. We will be looking at the choice of
plants for the garden including pots and baskets.
October 17th : Lawn Pampering
Your lawn is a plant and needs a little pampering at this time
of the year. Often gardeners concentrate on their lawns and
nothing else, whilst the rest of us enjoy the other aspects of
the garden and have to admit to forgetting that the lawn
needs attention to thrive too. We will look at mowing,
aerating, scarifying and top dressing as well as feeding and
controlling weeds.
November 14th : Prune and propagate!
This is the time of year to prune certain deciduous shrubs and
propagate by hardwood cuttings from the arisings. Plants for
pruning and/or propagating include Willow, Cornus, Currants,
Gooseberries, Buddleja and Roses along with many others.
December 5th : Garden Design for beginners
I thought rather that all the Christmas panicking, we would
take a day out to learn the basics of garden design. Another
popular day where you will learn how to measure your
garden, plot it to scale before deciding what you will create. It
can be for real or purely fantasy and may lead to a whole new
career...
Any of these workshops can be purchased for yourself or as a
gift and are £60 each including refreshments. Please ask for a
booking form and book early.
If you want to learn more about gardening there are regular
courses, workshops and taster sessions as well as voluntary
opportunities at the Gardening School available for everyone.
from easy to more complicated. You do not need a
partner, as the dances are done in a circle and you all
attempt to do the same steps at the same time. Moving in
comes to the circle, yet people talk of being energised
The Exchequer, Crookham Village
I'M NOT ENTIRELY sure what the
definition of a gastopub is these days. Is it
an ordinary boozer which does
extraordinary food, an excellent
restaurant that just happens to be in a
pub or a decent pub with average food at
exorbitant prices?
I would suggest that The Exchequer at
Crondall Village is most probably one of
the first two. This is the 'sister' pub of the
Stag at Eashing and the Duke of
Cambridge at Tilford. All three, however,
have their own menus and their own
style, which is no bad thing.
It is unmistakably a pub from the
outside, situated on a small country lane
with deer in the fields behind the car
park. Inside it is light and airy, beautifully
furnished in a modern country style, with
pale oak furniture, pretty chairs and a
roaring stove. Although not quite
December, the Christmas decorations are
up, tasteful and subtle with no flashing
lights in sight.
The menu is massive, and with the
addition of the specials blackboard, there
are arguably too many choices, certainly
for the main course. After much
consideration, we finally make some
decisions. Marcus opts for the warm salad
of black pudding, crispy bacon, sautéed
new potatoes topped with a poached egg
and Béarnaise sauce (£6.95). It is swiftly
dispatched, very generous with good
ingredients and a perfectly cooked egg. I
plump for the British mussels with onion,
chilli and garlic in a white wine and
parsley sauce (£6.50). These are amazing.
Plump and juicy, in a fantastic broth which
has a good kick of chilli and black pepper.
And so to mains. From the long list, we
all pick from the blackboard. Barbara has
the chargrilled whole Cornish plaice with
a caper sauce and buttered new potatoes
(£14.95), while I choose the baked fillet of
Scottish cod with a lemon and thyme
crust, mashed potatoes, curly kale and a
mussel sauce (£17.95). Both fish are
cooked perfectly, with excellent sauces.
The kale is a touch bland though. Marcus
takes the carnivorous route with the
chargrilled calves liver and bacon, wilted
spinach, mashed potato and onion gravy
(£15.95). Again, very well cooked and
very enjoyable. All mains are very
plentiful, ideal for big appetites.
From a good choice of puddings,
Barbara goes for Apple and Blackberry
Crumble with custard. Perfectly
presented in its own dish with a small jug
of custard; it is demolished before anyone
can proffer a fork. Marcus opts for a
lighter option and has three scoops of
Meadow Cottage ice cream, made locally
in Headley. Very good, and these desserts
were just £3.50. I finished the wine, an
excellent and sensibly priced Malbec.
What a find! Fabulous food, and the best
mussels this side of La Rochelle. The staff
were exceptionally energetic, efficient
and friendly, making this a most
enjoyable lunch or dinner destination. On
reflection, I don't think this is a gastropub.
It's much better than that.
January 2013
Back in March we wrote a piece on ‘Cider self-
59 sufficiency’. Well, the story continues, according
to Dr Nevin Stewart. “The apple crop in 2011 was
exceptionally good. This year it has been miserable
hereabouts. Instead of last year's 48 demi johns full of
apple juice, members of ‘The Scillonian Road cider cooperative’
have this year only managed 6. However, it has
allowed us to experiment with our ‘juice and strain’
method and quantify juice yields and apple processing
rates. In all, the winter and spring saw six different
Breville whole fruit juicers being evaluated on a 5kg apple
scale. There is a limit to how much fresh apple juice that,
primarily, the ladies of our household can consume. That
said we now have a quick, clean, low cost and efficient
method suited to use in a domestic kitchen setting. My
wife still gives me an ‘old fashioned look’ every time I use
the word ‘clean’ in connection with ‘juice and strain’ and
occasionally points out the indelible staining on the
kitchen walls! Fortunately, ‘we have come through all of
that’ I reassure her. Our cider also now has a name. It's
‘Onslow's dry’. This is in recognition of Lord Onslow' s
1920's restrictive covenant prohibiting the sale of alcohol
within the bounds of Onslow village, and because all of
the sugars ferment making the cider very dry. The method
is now attracting attention from as far away as New
Zealand. This is as a result of our short three minute video
that we have posted on YouTube as "Cider making made
simple" by Onslowsdry. There is only one video on the
channel so you can't miss it. The link is
http://youtu.be/Qvc0cCh5r0c. The video and
performance data have also attracted interest and debate
within the global Google cider workshop as "juice and
strain" may offer a practical alternative to the traditional
method of ‘pulp and press’ for making cider on a small
scale. Time will be the judge.“
From car park, walk back to canal and the wide
canal basin at Odiham Wharf.
The Basingstoke Canal opened in 1794, running from
Basingstoke to the Wey Navigation for links to the
Thames & London. It was not a commercial success
(except during the building of Aldershot barracks and,
its nemesis, the local railways) and became
increasingly derelict from 1950 until it was restored
by volunteers and re-opened as far as the collapsed
Greywell tunnel in 1991.
Climb up path to canal bridge, point A on map,
where you turn left and cross the bridge. Follow the
pavement past the Waterwitch Pub (Chef & Brewer
with canalside garden, open all day) & continue for
150m until you see a red post box on the right, point
B. Cross the road here and walk up the steepish
tarmac drive to reach the footpath ahead (to the
right of the house).
Follow the footpath uphill until you finally emerge
through a kissing gate onto a road, point C, where
you turn left and walk along the pavement downhill
to the roundabout. At the roundabout, point D, cross
the busy A287 carefully – underpass available for
safe crossing – and walk up the lane opposite
(signposted Broad Oak). After a couple of bends the
lane reaches the open expanse of Broad Oak
Common. After 100m of common you’ll see a
postbox on your left and a noticeboard on your
right, point E, and here you turn right into lane
(following footpath sign).
Keep directly ahead down lane until, after 100m, it
becomes a footpath leading to a footbridge and stile
at point F. Cross the stile and look for the stile in the
treeline opposite – not quite straight ahead but
62 x R&A GODALMING, CRANLEIGH & VILLAGES
Odiham & Dogmersfield
slightly to the right – and cross the open field
(usually with horses) to reach the stile at point G.
Cross the stile and footbridge to enter the wood and
after 10m turn right to follow the path through the
wood. The footpath emerges at point H onto a drive
which passes between 2 lodges, formerly
gatehouses to the Dogmersfield Park estate.
Turn left onto this drive and walk between the
lodges. Keep ahead on this drive until it forks left
through a gateway, point J, towards a redbrick
lakeside mansion. Leave the driveway at this fork
and walk straight ahead, following the grassy track,
then footpath, up the hill. After a kissing gate, keep
straight ahead on track over top of hill and down
again towards Tundry Pond in distance.
As you get towards the bottom of the hill you’ll be
able to see the redbrick buildings of the 5* Four
Seasons hotel & spa up on your right, built on the
site of the former Dogmersfield House, built by the
St John-Mildmays in 1727 but later destroyed by
fire. Pass through some black wrought-iron gates,
point K, and after 10m fork left onto a signposted
public footpath. Follow this grass footpath until it
ends at a driveway, point L, where you turn left onto
the driveway and follow it until it reaches gates
where you fork right onto a short footpath towards
some houses at point M.
At point M, go through the kissing gate and turn left
onto the public bridleway which soon bends right.
After the bend, keep straight ahead towards the
trees. When you reach the trees, point N, cross the
canal bridge & turn immediately left down the slope
to reach the canal towpath (a permissive path).
Here is a lovely unspoilt stretch of the canal - thanks
to the owner of Dogmersfield Park who refused to
January 2013
let the canal pass through his land, forcing a long
looping detour round the edge of the estate, now
providing gentle walking through peaceful rural
scenery.
Follow the towpath and after almost a mile you’ll
pass an open field on your right with a redbrick
house visible across the field. Stay on the towpath
and after the field is a wood which encloses a pond –
Wilk’s Water. After the towpath crosses the feed
channel between the canal and the pond, point P,
turn immediately right and walk to the far end of the
pond.
Here, to your left, are the 3 gables of the lovely
National Trust-owned ‘King Henry’s’ Hunting Lodge,
in fact a folly built in 1740 by the owners of the
Dogmersfield Park estate with the ornate facade
hiding a cottage-style dwelling behind. The property
is not open to the public, but walk up to the white
gates to see the delightful garden.
Now retrace your steps to the canal at point P where
you turn right and continue along the towpath
until you reach your start point at Odiham Wharf.
SurreySave Credit Union, which was launched nearly
a year ago, is a new mutual financial service for
everyone in the County, providing access to savings
and loans for local employees and residents. Credit
unions are owned and controlled by their members
so profits are used to grow the business, or passed
back to members as a dividend.
SurreySave was started by a group of volunteers
from Waverley, Guildford, Mole Valley and Woking,
who spent seven years raising local support and finance
to set up Surrey’s very own credit union. With
more and more members joining in Waverley, the
credit union is becoming a popular alternative to
other more expensive sources of credit. The maximum
APR SurreySave can charge is 26.8%, typically
higher cost lenders charge APRs in the hundreds
and well known payday lenders far higher so you
would pay back in one month what you would pay
with SurreySave in a year! This is because there are
no shareholders to pay, so SurreySave can provide
more flexible and affordable services than banks or
building societies, including:
• offering low interest rates if you take out a loan;
• providing a competitive rate of return on your savings;
• having no regular bank charges, apart from an annual
membership of £3; and
• free life insurance to cover loan repayments in the
event of death.
Credit Union
Michelle Boundy, CEO of SurreySave, said that “our
experience so far shows that people of all means are
struggling in the current financial climate; even
those who have never had problems obtaining
credit in the past now find many doors closed to
them and end up turning to high cost lenders.” She
added “SurreySave offers online membership and
loan applications, with a decision within 24 hours.”
SurreySave’s fast-growing membership has now
reached over 470 and it has given out around
£160,000 in loans. Cllr. Mike Band, Portfolio Holder
for Finance at Waverley Borough Council and a
member of the Board of Directors of the credit
union, said “SurreySave credit union is an important
community resource – a place where people can
save and know that their money stays and works in
the local community. In the current economic climate
we would encourage anyone who is interested
to find out more.”
The new credit union also offers a regular instant access
savings account and loans from £250 to £7,500
with various levels of interest.
Juliet Nursey, who has had experience of credit
unions in Ireland and was just waiting for one to be
set up in Waverley (and was one of the first members)
said “I’m very very pleased to see credit unions
finally taking off. The service from SurreySave was
very good, and I’m delighted to be a member”.
You can apply for an instant access savings account
or a loan online at www.surreysave.co.uk, or can
contact them by phone on 01932 339290 between
9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
