Retired professional and businessmen meet monthly at
Milford Probus Club for a lunch and an interesting talk. In
November, Peter Herring described the history of
Winkworth Arboretum. This collection of more than 1,000
specimens of shrubs and trees was started in 1937 by Dr
Wilfrid Fox, a skin specialist by profession. Some of the
woodland was felled as part of the war effort and this
actually encouraged him to plant a wider selection on the
original site. Free guided walks are provided on the first
Wednesday of each month. The Arboretum is now owned
by the National Trust and there are plans to build a new
visitor centre with improved facilities. Milford Probus Club
join them each year for a special lunch, and can join them
for any other lunch by invitation, and for occasional visits
