the critic Surrey Heat Basketball I am 10 years old and my Dad took my brother, some friends and me to a Surrey Heat basketball game, Surrey Heat against the Glasgow Rocks at the brilliant Surrey Sports Park in Guildford. I am a big sports fan but I didn’t know a lot about basketball. The atmosphere was electric and there was never a second of boredom. We were so fortunate that in some of the intervals we were chosen to take part in little challenges to entertain the crowd. My brother was invited to join in a go-kart race against our friend Jacob and I got chosen to do a basketball challenge where I had to throw the ball into the hoop from the half way line. The crowd still cheered me even though I missed! The funniest interval entertainment was when Scorcher (the Surrey Heat mascot) did a slam dunk running and jumping high from a trampoline! The interval entertainment enhanced the exciting game, basketball is fantastically fast with end-to-end action to keep everyone excited. I really enjoyed it and the score was 84-78 to Surrey Heat, and I can’t wait to go again! Take your kids to see Surrey Heat at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford, it’s one of the country’s best teams, and your kids will love it! Visitors to St Nicholas’ Church in Peper Harow are not the only ones to open the door and experience a ‘wow’ moment. The transformation from burnt-out shell following a devastating fire on Christmas Eve 2007 to a building that is light, exquisitely decorated and full of beautifully detailed stone carving has also wowed the judges of this year’s national Natural Stone Awards. On Friday 30th November, at a ceremony in Lords Cricket Ground, Marc Wiese, from architects Purcell Miller Tritton, and Brigadier David Swinburn, treasurer of St Nicholas, were presented with a Highly Commended Certificate as runner up in the Conservation category. “We are thrilled that the skills and expertise that went into this massive restoration project has been recognised by the Stone Federation of Great Britain,” said David. “The interior of the church is so welcoming. The reconstruction was designed to make it multi use and it is now a perfect venue for quiet or away days. The architects and craftsmen did a brilliant job retaining its history and also bringing in modern features such as solar panels.” Marc Wiese explained that three arches in the arcade between the Nave and North Aisle which were designed by Pugin had been severely damaged in the fire, requiring 95% reconstruction in new stone by stonemason Kevin Harding from Universal Stone. Cantilena is a small chamber choir for female voices based in the Horsham/Cranleigh area. Many of the singers are music teachers and most play an instrument to a high standard: all have a love of singing and a desire to tackle a wide and challenging repertoire. Since their first concert in February 2010 they have performed plainsong, medieval carols, renaissance polyphony, madrigals, romantic partsongs, music by Charpentier, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Elgar, Malcolm Singer and John Tavener as well as Bob Chilcott’s popular Little Jazz Mass and a variety of barbershop arrangements. Cantilena’s next concert, Carols for Candlemas, celebrates the centenary of Benjamin Britten’s birth with his much loved Ceremony of Carols. Candlemas was traditionally the end of the Christmas season and the programme will also look back at Christmastide with music by Rutter and settings by other composers of some of the texts which inspired Britten. The concert is on Saturday 9th February at 7.30pm in the comfortable, warm and welcoming venue of Cranleigh Baptist Church in Cranleigh High Street.
