A message
from our CEO
Welcome to this special edition
of The Breakthrough. As we
continue to herald significant
milestones across our business
and prepare for NAIDOC Week,
this is a good time to celebrate
the many partnerships which
enable Fortescue to continually
set new industry benchmarks.
A number of remarkable records
were set during May including
the shipping of our 150 millionth
tonne of ore, a truly outstanding
achievement after just four years of
operations. Other records included
1,974,797 tonnes of ore produced at
Christmas Creek, 5,890,853 tonnes
transported by rail and 6,546,181
tonnes shipped from Port Hedland.
These fantastic numbers are the
result of everyone’s continued
hard work and determination and
I applaud your commitment to
meeting our stretch targets.
Our culture of achievement through
teamwork was also highlighted
on May 25 when I, along with our
Chairman Andrew Forrest and the
Minister for Mines and Petroleum,
the Hon. Norman Moore, had the
honour of cutting the ribbon at
the official opening ceremony of
our third berth at the Herb Elliott
Port. The project was a magnificent
example of how Fortescue
consistently and successfully
integrates our contracting partners
into our projects. You’ll see a list
detailing our third berth contracting
partners on pages 8 and 9 – many
thanks to the entire team for all of
your hard work on the project.
Also present at the third berth
opening were Fortescue’s Board
members, who visited all of our sites
at the end of May. The Board was
2
impressed with the visible progress
and state of operations at all of our
sites.
Since Fortescue’s inception, one of
the keys to our success has been
the strength of our relationships
with traditional land owners
and native title groups, who are
some of our most important and
valued stakeholders. That’s why
NAIDOC Week (National Aborigines
and Islanders Day Observance
Committee) is such a special
time and a great opportunity to
get involved in a celebration of
Aboriginal history, culture and
achievement. I encourage you all to
take part in one of the many events
being held across our sites.
We also welcomed some new
members to the Fortescue Family
when we became the Gold Partner
of the world champion Australian
hockey team, the Kookaburras.
We share many values with the
Kookaburras - in our efforts to be the
best in the world, we are determined,
enthusiastic, honest, resilient high
performers, always on the lookout
for better ways to do things. This
partnership builds on our existing
Nev with Kookaburra Kieran Govers
involvement in Hockey Australia’s
Indigenous Program which involves
“We are the change
the Kookaburras visiting Roebourne
we three times seek” a year to run clinics with
- BARACK OBAMA
schoolchildren there. The program is
proving immensely popular.
As we head into the financial year
that will include the culmination of
our T155 project I’m very pleased
with our progress towards this
incredible goal. We are on track –
focused and determined, working
safely and efficiently and most
importantly, together, to achieve our
targets. Our partners have enriched
our business and strengthened our
team, helping us attain even greater
success and proving beyond a doubt
that together, everyone really can
achieve more.
Enjoy the NAIDOC Week celebrations.
Take time to celebrate our Aboriginal
culture and history at one of the
events at your site.
Finally – go Kookaburras! I look
forward to supporting the team
on your quest for Olympic gold in
London. I can tell you that everyone
at Fortescue will be cheering you
every step of the way.
