Passover – a holiday filled with ritual symbols that
commemorates the story of the Exodus when the
Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt. It is a
time for traditions and celebrations.
However, with celebration comes awareness and
vigilance. The instability in the Middle East is
increasing daily and we, in the Diaspora, must insure
that our commitment to providing ambulances and
medical equipment to support the life saving efforts
of all Israelis, regardless of race, color and religion
does not wane.
The motto handed down by our sages, “Whoever
saves a life has saved an entire world”, is more
meaningful than ever before. That is why we are
dependant on you, our donors. Israel can not
survive without Magen David Adom. Magen David
Adom can not survive without you.
On behalf of my family, I wish you and your families

Pessah est l’expression d’une fête comportant des

Cependant face à une période troublée et instable
comme celle qui sévit au Proche-Orient en ce
moment, la vigilance est de mise et les juifs de la
diaspora doivent s’assurer que leur engagement de
fournir des ambulances et de l’équipement médical
destiné à sauver les vies des israéliens de toutes races
et confessions n’est pas un vain mot.
La devise que nous ont léguée nos sages « qui sauve
une vie, sauve le monde » prend tout sens
aujourd’hui,plus que jamais. Voici la raison pour
laquelle nous comptons sur nos donateurs. Israël ne
peut pas survivre sans Magen David Adom et Magen

MDA Yochai Porat Student Volunteer Program
The MDA Yochai Porat Student
Volunteer Program is an opportunity
for those aged 18 to 25 to
become certified first responders
and to work on ambulances in
Israel. Participants can volunteer
for periods ranging from six
weeks to one year.
Re-named in memory of Yochai
Porat who was killed while on
reserve duty for the IDF by
a sniper’s bullet in 2002, the
Overseas Volunteer Program
was originally created in 2001
when Magen David Adom and
the Jewish Agency created
a joint program for overseas
volunteers.
Yochai was chosen to lead the
fledgling program and, as coordinator,
he taught training
courses, worked with the MDA
stations to create an infrastructure
that would integrate the volunteers
and served as a mentor.

tracted more than 7,000 volunteers
since its inception. In 2001,
10 McGill University students
participated in the program; in
2011 there were 64 participants
from Canada.
Ariel Riesenbach is a 23-year
old volunteer from Toronto who,
after completing the Program,
decided to join the 88-hour
course and extend his term. He
will be enlisting with the IDF in
a few months and is planning to
volunteer with MDA until his recruitment.
“Why volunteer? You must see
it for yourself to understand,”
explains Ariel. “Witnessing the
delivery of a baby girl, an elderly
woman who needs nothing
but to hold your hand during
the trip to the hospital after a
fall, or even the sense of cohesion
as part of a team of paramedics
all working as one to
help save a life...these are parts
of MDA not apparent at a first
glance.”

invaluable for those wishing to
pursue careers in medicine.

New Bloomberg MDA Jerusalem Station Emergency Headquarters
Dedicated by New York Mayor
Bloomberg in October 2011, the
Bloomberg MDA Jerusalem station
serves as the headquarters for the
Jerusalem region and runs 14 substations
in and around the city.
State-of-the-art equipment enables
faster and better coordinated
collection of blood
donations as well as storage of
blood and blood components for
emergencies.
The Visitors’ Center hosts visitors
and professionals and serves as a
venue for conferences and seminars.
Interactive technology allows
donors and family members to
learn how their donations have
been used and the activity of their
life-saving vehicles.
The national MDA Paramedic
School will be located at the Center
and will be equipped with sophsti-
cated electronic equipment. It will
serve as a training center for CPR
and first aid for medical professionals,
employees and volunteers,
and the community-at-large.

MDA Headquarters converted into a Five-Star Hotel
During a cold and stormy weekend
in mid-February, MDA elevated
its high level of alert
throughout the country. Hundreds
of ambulances, medical
teams, employees and volunteers
were on stand-by to provide
assistance in case of
medical and humanitarian
emergencies.
MDA management made the decision
to conduct a unique humanitarian
effort to dozens of
African refugees from Darfur
and Eritrea who have been living
outdoors in “Lewinski Garden”,
south of Tel Aviv. Many
suffer from old gun shot injuries,
as well as orthopedic and
other medical problems and it
was feared that they would not
survive the cold.
Within a few hours, MDA employees
and volunteers converted
MDA headquarters into a
temporary shelter. The refugees
were provided with warm lodgings,
clothing, food, mattresses,
showers, blankets and heaters.
They also received medical
check-ups and each was given a
valid medical record. If required,
medications, medical
treatment and transportation to
hospital for further medical attention
will be available.

Canadian Medical Personnel
Attend Preparedness Seminar
Canadian paramedics and nurses who specialize in
preparedness and response to various terrorist
threats including those of a non-conventional
nature were recent guests of the Operations
Department of Magen David Adom.
The group attended a one week seminar and
participated in a multi-organizational exercise,
“Orange Flame 6” – how to deal with an unusual
biological incident – when they happened upon
the ambulance that was a gift from Toronto’s
Hartman Family.
The visitors were very impressed with the
professional and technological capabilities of Magen
David Adom and have adopted many ideas for
further development and use in Canada.

Mass Casualty
Response Vehicle
One of the first vehicles to be launched
when a mass casualty incident is declared
is the Mass Casualty Response Vehicle
(MCRV). The vehicle is equipped with
resuscitation kits, medical equipment,
evacuation equipment, portable command
post equipment, a power generator, a
mobile lighting system for night operation,
and protective suits and ventilation masks.
This special vehicle is capable of treating
10 to 20 casualties at a time and also
serves as a triage vehicle when the number
of ambulances and staff is not sufficient to
meet the number of casualties.

Adom agent in Israel
Yolande Gottdiener recently replaced Yudke
Grossman as the Canadian Magen David Adom
agent in Israel. A native Montrealer, Yolande made
aliyah more than 40 years ago.
Yolande recently toured both the MDA Tel Aviv
station and the Regional Dispatching Center with
Regina Mizrahi, Coordinator of the MDA
International Department, where she learned how
the lifesaving operation works “behind the sirens”.

Fay Hassal and her grades 3 and 4 students from the North Shore
Hebrew School in Vancouver. Through a variety of fundraising

Canada, recently hosted a luncheon
on behalf of Christian Friends of
Canadian Magen David Adom
for Israel.
The event, which took place at
Mr. Mikes Steakhouse and Bar in
Chilliwack, BC, was an opportunity to
introduce to Christians who work in
the medical field the work that is
being done by Canadian Magen David
Adom (CMDA). Guest of honor was
Carey Bornn, CFRE, Senior Principal &
Legacy Giving, Union Gospel Mission.
Each attendee was presented with a
CMDA lapel pin and all will be
receiving online editions of CMDA
newsletters. Mr. Buchenauer is
confident that they will be unofficial
CMDA ambassadors at their respective
churches and work places.
Commissioned as a
Lieutenant in the Canadian
Armed Forces at the age of 19, Mr.
Buchenauer served 32 years as a
reserve officer in the Cadet Instructors
List and the Primary Reserve. After a
lengthy and rewarding career in the
public service of Canada – his federal,
provincial and municipal law
enforcement service totaled 38 years
– he retired and was presented with
the challenge to be of service to Israel
through Canadian Magen David Adom.
His involvement with numerous
organizations on a volunteer basis has
taught him the importance of being
able to give back … to his community,
to the nation and to Israel.
He considers it a privilege and, in turn,
Canadian Magen David Adom is
privileged to have Thomas Buchenauer
as our emissary.
12 tribes =12 ambulances
Wolf Bronet, Canadian Magen David Adom Ambassador-at-Large, has devoted more than 23 years of his life for
Israel. Together with the famous Wolf Pack group of runners, Wolf has donated ten ambulances –“hospitals on
wheels” – since 1988. This year, in honour of the 12 tribes of Israel, Wolf’s objective is to donate the 11th and 12th
ambulances. This event will coincide with his 88th birthday and Israel’s 64th birthday. Wolf and the YM-YWHA
Wolf Pack are a blessing for our community and you are the key to their success. Be part of this worthy cause.

Baker dedication
Beverly Baker and her son, Joshua, participated in the
dedication of the ambulance donated in memory of
Morris D. Baker on December 20th in Tel Aviv. The
ambulance is stationed in Bat Yam.

A multi-talented
Renaissance man,
journalist and author,
Jerusalem-born Yoram
East immigrated to
Winnipeg in 1982 where
he continued to write for
Israeli newspapers and
threw himself into
community activism.

‘An Unsung Hero’
Hilda Rosen: A Force
to be Reckoned With
According to Hilda Rosen, Ambassador of Canadian
Magen David Adom in Hamilton (CMDA), “Age is
only a number. I will be 83 in May but that isn’t
stopping me from raising money for CMDA.”
In 1984, Hilda and her late husband, Jack, became
members of a newly-formed group, the Hamilton
Supporters of Israel. The group decided that their
first gift to Israel would be an ambulance in honour
of the 36th anniversary of the State of Israel.
(Hilda has a passion for ambulances due, in part,
to the proximity of her home to McMaster
Health Sciences.)
In 1992, following the demise of Morris Lax z”l, the
group disbanded. Hilda’s desire to raise money for
Israel never waned and eventually she became
MDA’s Hamilton Ambassador.
Since then, Hilda has been instrumental in the
purchase of a second ambulance for the people of
Israel. In addition to her passion for ambulances, her
motivation stems from her love of Israel and the
realization that Israel desperately needs the help of
the Diaspora. Her hard work and determination have
resulted in numerous pieces of equipment being
purchased by the Hamilton and area community for
Magen David Adom, including a blood mobile unit,
two scooters, triple blood bags, oxygen cylinders and
regulators, advanced life support medical
equipment, portable stretchers and, most recently, a
Corpuls 3 Defibrillator. Thousands of dollars were
raised for the Lebanese crisis.
“Israel needs Magen David Adom and Magen David
Adom needs us. That is why I am now campaigning
for the third scooter from the Hamilton
community,” says Hilda. She continues, “I am so
grateful to my late husband, Jack, and to my
children, Reesa and Ira, who have allowed me to
spend time on behalf of CMDA and to the many
contributors who not only continue to give freely
but also show their support through their words of
encouragement.”
