1999 W.A.R. Against Isolation, Bangor Purpose: To support the 1999 program for women with mental illness Women, Activities, Recreation— that’s what W.A.R. stands for. The organization, founded in 1996 by Susan Joyce, helps to reintegrate women with a history of mental illness into community life through meetings, organized activities, cultural events and informal networking. W.A.R. Against Isolation promotes public awareness and acceptance of women with mental illness by encouraging its members to be active in the community at large. Several grants from the Maine Community Foundation’s Penobscot Valley Health Association Fund have provided ongoing support to the organization, which has become a model for other groups in Maine. 2000 Mainely Girls, Camden Purpose: To implement changes proposed in the report, "Listening to Girls: Voices from the Maine Youth Center" Mainely Girls grew out of a personal research project on girls’ development issues begun by Mary Orear in 1992. Ms. Orear formed Mainely Girls in 1996 as a full-time effort to galvanize communities to identify and address girls’ unmet needs. Mainely Girls organizes programs to improve the environment in which girls grow to maturity. The Maine Community Foundation grant in 2000 supported efforts to address the issues that arose out of a report on the status of incarcerated girls in the Maine Youth Center. 2001 10 Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project, Portland Purpose: To support the expansion of its programs Launched in 1993, the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project (ILAP) is the state’s only provider of immigration legal services for free or a low fee to low-income Maine residents. The agency is the first in Maine’s history to be recognized as having sufficient immigration law expertise to merit inclusion on the Board of Immigration Appeals’ list of immigration law providers given by the Immigration and Naturalization Service to low-income individuals who need immigration help. The Maine Community Foundation grant helped transform ILAP from a purely pro bono project into a staffed legal service.The grant also funded the agency’s ongoing expansion of its programs, including the immigration clinic. Following September 11, the demand for legal assistance in immigration matters increased dramatically. ILAP now serves about 1,000 lowincome Mainers throughout the state each year. 2002 Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, Unity Purpose: Organizational Capacity Building Founded in 1971, MOFGA has grown from a loose affiliation of farmersandgardeners committed to growing healthy, chemical-free food,to an internationally recognized advocate for food production that enhances and protects the ecological and economic vitality of rural communities. The association is one of five statewide nonprofits currently benefiting from the Maine Community Foundation’s capacity building grant program, launched in 2001. Program participants receive one-on-one management assistance and strategic coaching from Common Good Ventures. CGV and the Foundation are helping MOFGA optimize the effectiveness of its fundraising activities, create financial reports that are useful to internal management and external stakeholders, and develop an organizational structure that is consistent with current needs.
Convening t o m a k e a d i f f e r e n c e 2003 Maine Development Foundation, Augusta Purpose: To support the Compact for Higher Education In 2001, the board of directors of the Maine Community Foundation decided the organization should bring special focus to supporting access to higher education in Maine. They were struck by the fact that Maine lags behind the national and New England average in the number of citizens with a bachelor’s degree. The Compact for Higher Education, a joint effort of the Maine Community Foundation and the Maine Development Foundation, was launched in March 2003 with a start-up grant from the Maine Community Foundation and additional support from the Libra Foundation, MELMAC Education Foundation, the Senator George J. Mitchell Scholarship Research Institute and the Maine Education Loan Authority. The Compact will develop ways to encourage more high school graduates as well as adults to continue their education.
