2003
Maine Development Foundation,
Augusta
Purpose: To support the Compact
for Higher Education
In 2001, the board of directors
of the Maine Community
Foundation decided the
organization should bring
special focus to supporting
access to higher education in
Maine. They were struck by the
fact that Maine lags behind the
national and New England
average in the number of citizens
with a bachelor’s degree.
The Compact for Higher
Education, a joint effort of the
Maine Community Foundation
and the Maine Development
Foundation, was launched in
March 2003 with a start-up grant
from the Maine Community
Foundation and additional
support from the Libra
Foundation, MELMAC Education
Foundation, the Senator George
J. Mitchell Scholarship Research
Institute and the Maine Education
Loan Authority. The Compact
will develop ways to encourage
more high school graduates
as well as adults to continue
their education.
