Cetaceans in Greece: Present status of knowledge

Main threats
In the western Mediterranean ship strikes constitute the main known source of
anthropogenic mortality for fin whales. Shipping noise and vessel disturbance, particularly
from the unregulated whale watching, is another source of concern (Notarbartolo di Sciara &
Panigada 2006). No information is available on threats to fin whales in the Greek Seas.
IUCN Red List classification
Mediterranean subpopulation proposed as ‘Data Deficient’ (Notarbartolo di Sciara &
Panigada 2006); listed as ‘Endangered’ globally (IUCN 2008).
