PARENT INVOLVEMENT BOARD (PIB)<br />

PARENT ORIENTATION IS JUNE 8<br />

Great time to meet the team and ask questions.<br />

Parent Involvement Board (PIB) = All parents in Child and Youth Programs<br />

at the CDC or the Youth Center.<br />

PIB meets during Orientation and have events every Friday for fa<strong>mil</strong>y<br />

involvement.<br />

You are welcome to visit the Mattapany Day Camp anytime. We have<br />

special events during the summer that you may attend, so keep an eye<br />

on the parent board for information regarding special speakers and<br />

events. Mattapany Day Camp has an open door policy and encourages<br />

parent participation. Parents are asked to introduce themselves to the<br />

camp counselors.<br />

Parents are invited to be a guest speaker on<br />

their fa<strong>mil</strong>y culture, work environment or<br />

special interest and hobbies. Parent surveys<br />

are distributed to determine the needs of their<br />

children. Parents are also invited to attend<br />

and become a board member of the Parent<br />

Involvement Board.<br />

WELCOME<br />

The School Age Care summer program for 2012 is the Mattapany Day<br />

Camp. It off ers an entire summer of fun and care for children who have<br />

completed kindergarten through 12. NAS Patuxent River’s 2012 camp<br />

runs for 10 one week sessions from June 11-August 17. Make your child’s<br />

summer vacation a memorable experience by enrolling him/her in<br />

this planned enrichment program featuring arts and crafts, swimming,<br />

canoeing and more. This is a program of Morale, Welfare and Recreation<br />

(MWR).<br />

ELIGIBILITY<br />

Eligibility is open to children of active-duty <strong>mil</strong>itary stationed at Patuxent<br />

River or Webster Field Annex, Department of Defense (DoD) personnel<br />

or contractors who work aboard Patuxent River or Webster Field Annex,<br />

reservists on active duty or inactive duty for training. Sponsoring<br />

unauthorized children is prohibited. According to <strong>Navy</strong> regulations,<br />

children enrolled in the CYP School Age Care program have priority<br />

to register. Please Note: Children 5 years old must have completed<br />

kindergarten by the start of camp. Youth ages 13 and above are not<br />

eligible for camp. If the child’s 13th birthday falls in the middle of a week,<br />

they may complete the week.<br />

<strong>CAMP</strong> DATES<br />

Patrons only need to register for the weeks they need to attend.<br />

No vacation weeks are needed because you only sign up for the weeks<br />

you are interested in attending.<br />

If you sign up for the entire 10 weeks of<br />

summer and pay for the entire summer at<br />

registration you will get a 50% discount on the<br />

last session only eligible if you sign up and pay<br />

for the entire summer program.<br />

Mattapany Day Camp is a chartered Boys and Girls Club and 4-H Club;<br />

your youth will be participating in club activities throughout the<br />

summer. Some examples of clubs are; building, fi ne arts, sports and<br />

fi tness (canoeing, running, swimming, games), theater and drama,<br />

science and nature, Smart girls and Passport to manhood (these clubs<br />

address current issues concerning our youth), photography, reading,<br />

community service and more.<br />

Please remember you are welcome to attend Fa<strong>mil</strong>y Fun Friday events<br />

and all special events throughout the summer such as Pax Idol, the Talent<br />

Show and more.<br />

Weekly events will be posted on the parent board and in the newsletters<br />

and via e-mail.<br />

RASSIEUR YOUTH CENTER<br />

MISSION STATEMENT<br />

The mission of the Child and Youth Program (CYP) School Age Care<br />

(SAC) Program in affi liation with the Boys and Girls Club of America<br />

and 4-H programs; is to provide quality care for school age children in a<br />

safe and supportive environment. The program off ers educational and<br />

recreational activities designed to provide children with opportunities<br />

for the growth in mind and body, self discovery, life skills, character<br />

and leadership, community involvement and to celebrate diversity and<br />

encourage individuality. We do this while collaborating with the base<br />

community and local community resources.<br />

The mission of all Program Assistants throughout the CYP is to work<br />

together as a team to provide the highest quality care and development<br />

opportunities to the children and fa<strong>mil</strong>ies involved in our program. To<br />

accomplish this mission we provide a safe, creative, nurturing environment<br />

that meets the needs of the whole child and enhance our knowledge and<br />

training in early child development.<br />

• Parent conference with the MDC Manager, Youth Director, and<br />

Military Fa<strong>mil</strong>y Life Consultant and create a plan.<br />

• Removal of child from the program for the day.<br />

• Recommendation to the MWR Director and the Inclusion Action<br />

Team (IAT) Board for permanent removal from the program.<br />

If a child receives three incident reports in one day, the child must be<br />

removed within one hour of notifi cation from Mattapany Day Camp for<br />

that day.<br />

All physical violence and/or obscene or abusive language from one child<br />

towards another child and/or staff member is treated seriously. Parents<br />

will be called for immediate removal of a camper for any act of physical<br />

violence (i.e. hitting, etc.). If a child shows a pattern of such actions there<br />

will be a conference with the parents to discuss the child’s behavior.<br />

Suggestions could lead to professional guidance and/or removal from<br />

the program.<br />

11 and 12 PROGRAM<br />

The 11 and 12 year olds may be dropped off as early as 6 a.m. at Mattapany<br />

Day Camp. The Youth Center staff will pick-up children from Mattapany<br />

Day Camp at 1200 and transport them to the Rassieur Youth Center.<br />

Parents must pick up their child(ren) from the Rassieur Youth Center no<br />

later than 6 p.m. The late pick-up policy stated in the handbook applies.<br />

Free swim is scheduled for the 11 and 12 year olds at the Outdoor Pool<br />

located behind the Rassieur Youth Center. Children will<br />

be required to take a swim test in order to swim in the<br />

deep end and use the slide.<br />

Activities will include swimming, hiking, arts &<br />

crafts, local fi eld trips, bowling, indoor/outdoor<br />

recreation activities, technology tours, and<br />

much more.<br />

All 11 and 12 year olds will be outdoors on a<br />

regular basis. Plan accordingly.<br />

Pick up and drop off locations may alternate<br />

between the Youth Center and the day camp.<br />

Advance notice will be given.<br />

ENROLLMENT REGISTRATION TIMES<br />

9 am - 2:30 pm<br />

Children enrolled in the School Age Care (SAC) program during the<br />

current year will be given the fi rst chance to register for camp. Parents<br />

of SAC children should plan to register for camp April 10-11. Military<br />

fa<strong>mil</strong>ies who are not enrolled in SAC, but need child care for the summer,<br />

may register April 16-17. DoD Civilians may register April 23-24, and if<br />

space is still available, Naval District Washington (NDW) contractors may<br />

register April 30-May 1. Only the sponsor may register a child for camp;<br />

if the sponsor is deployed, then the spouse may register the sponsor’s<br />

children.<br />

Picture ID is required to verify eligibility. Camp fees are based on total<br />

fa<strong>mil</strong>y income. Leave and earning statements (LES) or W2’s are required<br />

to establish categories.<br />

You will need to provide the name and telephone numbers of three adults<br />

who can serve as emergency contacts for your child. Registration times<br />

during April from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.<br />

WHAT <strong>CAMP</strong>ERS SHOULD WEAR OR BRING TO <strong>CAMP</strong><br />

Campers should wear lightweight, comfortable clothing. Sturdy tennis<br />

shoes are required; no open-toe shoes or sandals are permitted. Campers<br />

must bring their swim suits, towel, sunblock and water bottle every day<br />

to camp. Campers should arrive wearing sunblock.<br />

Water is very important to campers and helping the environment is one<br />

of our goals. Please supply your child with a water bottle daily and ensure<br />

the child’s name is on it. The program will have water coolers fi lled with<br />

ice water they will need to bring water on the daily hikes.<br />

Campers should not wear crocs, sandals, or fl ip fl ops. Avoid any open<br />

toed or heeled shoes.<br />

Campers should avoid sun block and bug spray combinations pleas<br />

bring separate products. Bugs spray should not be applied as often as<br />

sun block.<br />

No vacation weeks are needed because you only sign up for the weeks<br />

you are interested in attending.<br />

If you sign up for the entire 10 weeks of summer and pay for the entire<br />

summer at registration you will get a 50% discount on the last session<br />

only eligible if you sign up and pay for the entire summer program.<br />

IMPORTANT INFORMATION<br />

At registration the minimum you will pay is the fee for the last session you<br />

have registered.<br />

Withdrawal requires two weeks written notice. It must be submitted in<br />

writing via e-mail to keetje.straub@navy.<strong>mil</strong> or sarah.hagensick@navy.<br />

<strong>mil</strong>. No phone calls will be accepted. The patron is committed for the<br />

sessions they have selected as per this contract at registration.<br />

INCLEMENT WEATHER<br />

If it rains or the base is in thunderstorm condition I or<br />

IA, camp activities may be carried out in an alternate<br />

location. A sign will be posted at the camp to notify<br />

parents or you may call the Rassieur Youth Center (301)<br />

342-1694 or Mattapany Day Camp (301) 342-4800 for<br />

more information.<br />

ALL Changes in plans or location for pick-up or drop off will be relayed<br />

via e-mail, on the answering machine at camp and a physical sign at the<br />

entrance of camp to ensure the most accurate information to our team.<br />

LUNCH AND SNACK<br />

Lunches will be provided by the youth center program,<br />

no packing of food or drinks will be necessary. The<br />

children will be required to participate in our USDA food<br />

program off ering Breakfast, Lunch and PM snack.<br />

Please ensure you have listed any food allergies under the health section<br />

on your registration form and completed an emergency action plan with<br />

your physician (the forms or located on the webpage via e-mail, or in<br />

person at the youth center).<br />

Please ensure your child brings a water bottle daily for hydration breaks<br />

and to be environmentally friendly. Ice water in the pavilion and is<br />

provided all day during program hours.<br />

WE ARE A NUT FREE ZONE<br />

Please do not pack any nut products or products made in<br />

a factory containing nuts. Peanut butter, nutter butter, and<br />

almond butter all contain nuts; some trail mixes and trail bars<br />

may contain nuts. Alternates to peanut butter which may found in local<br />

stores: fl uff , apple butter, preserves, soy butter, sun butter (made from<br />

sunfl ower seeds), hummus, beans, salsa, cream cheese, hard cheeses,<br />

and meats. Other snack ideas are: small mini pita breads or corn chips<br />

and used the dips and the diff erent spreads (popular with the children<br />

and easy to pack). A mini pita with spaghetti sauce and shredded cheese<br />

they can build a pizza (exactly what the pizza lunchable is.)<br />

rendered. Payment must be made prior to service being rendered. Your<br />

child will not be accepted into the program without payment. The last<br />

session will be paid at the time of registration.<br />

• You will be committed to pay for the last session at time of registration<br />

• Fa<strong>mil</strong>ies enrolling in a single session will pay entire<br />

amount due at time of registration.<br />

• Discounts for multiple children are off ered. 20%<br />

is off ered to each additional child.<br />

<strong>CAMP</strong> HOURS OF OPERATION<br />

Camp sessions for 2012 are one week long.<br />

Hours of operation are Monday – Friday, 6 a.m. - 6 p.m.<br />

Children not picked up by 6 p.m. will be transported to the Rassieur Youth<br />

Center, Bldg. 1597, near the Outdoor Pool. The late fee is $1 for every<br />

minute beyond 6 p.m.<br />

RATIO<br />

Mattapany Day Camp staff to child ratio is 1:15.<br />

LOST AND FOUND<br />

A lost and found box/area is at camp. Mattapany Day Camp is not<br />

responsible for lost or stolen items. Due to sanitation, items not picked<br />

up will be disposed of at the end of each week.<br />

ILLNESS<br />

Parents will be notifi ed of child’s suspected illness and must arrange<br />

for pick-up within one hour of notifi cation. Any child with a diagnosed<br />

disease will require a doctor’s note, that must be delivered to the camp<br />

offi ce, before the child can return to MDC.<br />

Parents will be notifi ed of child’s illness and must arrange for pick–up<br />

within one hour of notifi cation.<br />

Children sent home with a fever, vomiting, diarrhea or<br />

any diagnosed illness will not be readmitted until<br />

at least 24 hours from departure and initiation of<br />

treatment where applicable. Parents are obligated<br />

to inform the camp of their child’s exposure to a<br />

contagious disease.<br />

A Physician’s not may be requires to readmit<br />

the child, stating the child is not contagious,<br />

and is able to return to group care. Your child<br />

will be readmitted when the note is provided<br />

and when fully able to participate in activities.<br />

PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES<br />

Include: nature hikes, swim lessons, arts & crafts,<br />

science studies, canoeing, special events, paddle<br />

boating, fi eld sports, local fi eld trips, quiet games,<br />

reading, bowling/movies.<br />

WATER TUES<strong>DAY</strong>S<br />

Every Tuesday afternoon is fi lled with funtastic water<br />

play activities. Please bring water-resistant sun block<br />

and a towel.<br />

WACKY WEDNES<strong>DAY</strong>S<br />

Every Wednesday, campers are requested to bring extra clothes and<br />

towel for crazy outdoor games.<br />

FAMILY FUN FRI<strong>DAY</strong>S<br />

Fa<strong>mil</strong>y fun days are from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. every Friday. Parents are invited<br />

to share in activities and spend lunch time with their children.<br />

FIELD TRIPS<br />

No out of county fi eld trips will be off ered this summer due to budget<br />

constraints<br />

SNACK<br />

Appropriate snacks will be served at 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.<br />

SWIM ACTIVITIES<br />

Swim activities are provided and<br />

participation by every child attending<br />

camp is required, unless a physician’s note<br />

is provided stating the child may not<br />

participate in the swim. Children depart<br />

from camp 30 minutes prior to swimming.<br />

Parents arriving late may drop off /sign-in<br />

their child with a camp counselor at the<br />

Drill Hall Indoor Pool.<br />
