Cutter Juniper tows in disabled stern trawler
BOSTON — The 225-foot Coast
Guard cutter Juniper towed a New Bedford,
Mass., fishing vessel to safety late
last week, after it became disabled
approximately 70 miles east of
Chatham, Mass., on March 11.
The five-member crew of the 70foot
stern trawler Sea Siren was not in
danger.
After receiving the call from the
stern trawler around 4:20 p.m., Coast
Guard Sector Southeastern New England
directed the Coast Guard cutter
Juniper, homeported at Naval Station
Newport, to assist Sea Siren’s crew.
“Communicating with the disabled
vessel was difficult due to how far offshore
they were,” said Petty Officer 1st
Class Nicholas Sawka, the operations
unit controller at Sector Southeastern
New England. “Luckily, the crew was
able to use their satellite phone to let us
know they were having engine problems.”
The cutter, which was about 80 miles
from the Sea Siren, arrived on scene
CNW students float new ideas
in national security approach
By DR. DAVID BURBACH
Naval War College
College of Naval Warfare (CNW) students
presented proposed future grand strategies for
the United States to a panel of national security
leaders at the Naval War College on March 10.
As the capstone to the National Security
Decision Making (NSDM) course, 19 student
seminars each conducted an analysis of the
future security environment, developed new
national security and national military strategies,
and identified new concepts and capabilities
to be developed as part of that military
strategy.
“The exercise provides students an excellent
opportunity to practice peer leadership and
generate cutting-edge national security ideas,”
said NSDM Chair Joan Johnson-Freese.
Overall, the CNW seminars developed strategies
in line with the likely direction of the new
Obama administration. Most groups saw
future challenges increasingly coming from
transnational issues like failed states, terrorism,
crime, or environmental degradation, rather
than traditional wars between nation states.
To deal with these challenges, most seminars
proposed greater international cooperation
between the U.S. and other global powers.
While few recommended major changes in
the military’s current force structure, most did
propose expanding U.S. capabilities for counterinsurgency
and security cooperation. Many
also addressed the need to improve interagency
coordination.
Seminars developed a wide range of concepts,
from focused research and development
on robotics and unmanned vehicles, to new
programs to improve the cultural and regional
knowledge of U.S. service members.
After initial rounds of judging by NWC faculty,
two seminars delivered their presentations
to a distinguished panel on March 10.
The panel included Dr. David Chu, who
recently retired as Undersecretary of Defense
for Manpower and Readiness; Ambassador
Larry Dinger, currently the American charge
d’affaires in Burma; and Rear Adm. James P.
Wisecup, President of the Naval War College.
They appreciated the innovative ideas developed
by the NSDM seminars and offered
thoughtful commentary on the possibilities of
implementing them.
around 4:30 a.m.
“When we arrived on scene there
were 10-foot seas and winds gusting up
to 30 knots,” said Seaman Terrance
Daignault, a crewman aboard the
Juniper. “The boat was dead in the
water and taking waves broadside.”
The cutter crew launched a tow line
to the Sea Siren using a line throwing
gun and the fishing boat’s crew pulled
the line onto their boat and connected
the tow.
The Juniper towed the Sea Siren
toward Buzzards Bay, Mass., at a speed
of about 3 knots, where it met a commercial
tug Friday evening. The tug
planned to tow the Sea Siren into New
Bedford.
The Juniper, a ocean going buoy tender,
is one of three Coast Guard vessels
under the Department of Homeland
Security at Pier 2. The others are the
cutters Willow (WLB-202) and the Ida
Lewis (WLM-551), both buoy tenders.
The Homefront
Warriors coming
home to ‘gaposis’
Last week I was part of a team giving speeches to a deployed
squadron that was about to head home. The chaplain prepared
his “Ten Commandments of Homecoming” brief. The lady from
family services dropped by to remind everybody not to take over
the checkbook.
Me, I was busy forgetting
important stuff I
wanted to tell these service
members.
I hate that. I love
speaking with the service
members, but I hate
not being able to tell
them every single thing
they need to know. These guys get the basics of homecoming
from the command. They really do. For example, we always
remember to tell the service member to get involved with the
family again. To give it time. To wait to reassert their authority
over teenagers.
But the official folks forget to tell the service members that if
they plan to do this deployment thing more than once in their
lives, they gotta learn the emotional subtleties, too. Because it is
all about the subtleties. We never do remember to tell them
about the subtle stuff like “Gaposis.”
Yeah, Gaposis. It’s a technical term that I just invented. Gaposis
refers to the barely perceptible gaps in family life that open
the first few days in which someone comes home from deployment.
Here is how it usually works. A guy gets home and the first day
is all about him. We family members have to kiss him, feed him,
pat him, celebrate him, talk him up, call his mom. Then we
notice that the poor guy is exhausted and suffering from the
time zone change so we put him to bed.
That’s all well and good. Very, very, verrrrrrrry good. But the
next day no one tells the service member that all that coddling
will start winding down before he actually has the energy to get
Leading Division II of the
53rd annual Newport St.
Patrick’s Day Parade, the military
cut a proud swath through
downtown Newport last Saturday.
Thousands lined the
parade route and cheered
Army, Navy, Marine Corps and
Coast Guard units.
The two-mile parade, a highlight
of the Newport Irish Heritage
Month celebration,
stepped off from Newport City
Hall on Broadway and ended
at St. Augustin’s Church.
Parade organizers estimated
one of the largest crowds on
record lined the route.
As the military color guards,
marching units, and floats
passed through Lower Thames
Street the noise level from the
crowd rose in decibels.
The Navy presence included
Navy Band Northeast’s marching
band, directed by Lt. Carl
Gerhard; two marching units
consisting of approximately 50
Naval Science Institute students
in the Seaman-to-Admiral
Achieve goals with healthy diet
By HM3 M. MATTHEWS
NHCNE Wellness Clinic
The weather is getting nicer,
the days getting longer. We are
all starting to get into shape for
the summer and the beach.
However, do you have the tools
and knowledge to go about
getting into shape?
Maybe you’re able to run 10
miles a day, do 1,000 sit-ups,
lift weights or take walks, but
do you know how to eat
healthy to get the full benefits
of the time you are putting into
exercise?
Everyone has different goals.
Some may want to lose weight,
others want to build muscle.
Do you know how to do that,
and do it the right way? Not
eating and exercising isn’t
going to work.
You need to have the right
meal plan to go along with
your exercise plan. Here are
some tips on how to plan
meals to help you lose weight
and some tips on carbohydrates,
protein and supplements.
Carbohydrates are necessary
for brain function, fueling your
muscles and helping your
heart. Many people are con-
fused about carbohydrates,
which ones to eat, and which
ones are healthy. Whole grain
breads and cereals, fruits, vegetables,
and brown rice are
better choices than white
bread and processed foods.
Carbohydrates will help you
replenish the energy you
expended and help you store
the energy for the next day of
exercise. Try to eat a carbohydrate
rich snack 30 minutes to
one hour after aerobic exercise.
Protein is essential for muscle
growth, but too much protein
can have negative effects
on your body. The following is
a formula to help you figure
out how much protein you
back on board with the family.
No one tells him that there will
be a test. That the home
phone will ring.
There will be a certain pause,
a definite, measurable gaposis
in which the entire family is
waiting for him to jump up and
answer the phone.
If the service member hasn’t
been warned to watch out for
gaposis, he probably won’t
automatically jump up to get
the phone. He knows the call
is not for him. He hasn’t been
home in seven or eight
months. He hasn’t placed any
calls. If his work was calling,
they’d use the cell phone. It
makes sense for him to let
someone else get the phone.
Still, there is a pronounced
pause. Because this is gaposis.
It is the family silently creating
a space for the service member
to take back his place as a genuine,
all-purpose, 100 percent
phone-answering member of
the family.
Service members report that
the same thing happens when
a toddler falls down and cries.
Or when a preschooler needs
to be put to bed. Or someone
needs to be driven to Sarah’s
house. A gap opens up in
which everyone is waiting for
the service member to jump in
and do—-no matter how tired
he is. Female service members
report that they don’t even get
the benefit of the gaposis—their
families expect that they
will have already jumped in
and done.
The problem with gaposis is
that it is full of opportunities
for our service members-male
and female— to feel dumb.
After months away from the
family,
they don’t know why the toddler
is crying or how to fix it.
They don’t know that the
preschooler now hates to get
his hair washed so you have to
use the SpongeBob visor.
They could not find Sarah’s
house if it was lit up with
Christmas lights in July. No
wonder our returnees want to
ignore the gaposis.
Someone should tell them
that they can’t. They can’t
afford not to jump on the
gaposis. To ask how. To wonder
why. To feel dumb. That is
part of the price of deployment.
Service members have
to be willing to jump back on
the family merry-go-round in
these low key ways. Gaposis is
subtle. We family members
know it is subtle and lasts for
such a short time. So our service
members have to be
ready. They have to pay attention.
They have to leap wildly,
clumsily, thoroughly on every
gaposis that comes their way.
Groton submarine wins Ney food service award
By MC1 STEVEN MYERS
Navy News Service
GROTON, Conn. (NNS) —
USS Providence (SSN 719) was
named the submarine recipient
of the 2009 Captain
Edward F. Ney Award for Food
Service Excellence in a message
released Feb. 20 by Secretary
of the Navy, Donald C.
Winter.
This is the first time Providence
and most of the culinary
Navy-wide news
specialists on board have won
the award, which was established
in 1958 by the Secretary
of the Navy and the International
Food Service Executives
Association (IFSEA) to improve
and recognize the quality of
food service in the Navy.
“This award is the greatest
accolade for a culinary specialist
to win,” said Culinary Specialist
2nd Class (SS) Emanual
Walker. “This is indicative of
what our team accomplishes
National Guard considered
for Mexican border violence
WASHINGTON (DVIDS) — As President Barack Obama considers
deploying National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border
to control escalating violence, Arizona’s governor has
requested about 250 more National Guard troops on its border
with Mexico, and the Texas governor is considering a similar
action.
“We’re going to examine whether, and if, National Guard
deployments would make sense and in what circumstances they
would make sense as part of this overall review of our border situation,”
Obama told reporters yesterday, according to media
reports. The White House does not release transcripts of media
roundtable sessions.
While emphasizing that he does not want to “militarize” the
border, Obama called it “unacceptable if you’ve got drug gangs
crossing our borders and killing our citizens.”
Navy announces more changes
to Physical Readiness Program
MILLINGTON, Tenn. (NNS) — The Navy announced additional
changes to the Physical Readiness Program (PRP) March 11,
which remains focused on performance and enhances the culture
of fitness for Sailors.
“These changes underscore the importance of all our Sailors
remaining fit and able to meet the demands of Navy service. I
see this as an opportunity for us to build upon the finest Navy in
the world by creating a Navy that is better, stronger and more
capable,” said Vice Adm. Mark Ferguson, chief of naval personnel.
According to NAVADMIN 073/09, effective immediately,
active-duty Sailors with three or more physical fitness assessment
(PFA) failures in the last four years may not transfer, reenlist
or extend without a waiver from Navy Personnel Command.
Effective Oct. 1, Physical Readiness Information Management
System (PRIMS) data will be reviewed as part of the advancement
and promotion process. According to the current policy,
Sailors who failed their most recent PFA cannot be advanced or
promoted until they are within PFA standards. This has been
enforced at the command level, but the new change will allow
equal enforcement across the fleet.
Chinese harass Sealift vessel
WASHINGTON (NNS) — The incident in the South China Sea
involving a U.S. ocean surveillance ship is serious enough to
merit face-to-face discussions between U.S. and Chinese officials,
Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell said March 11.
USNS Impeccable (T-AGOS 23) — an unarmed Military Sealift
Command vessel — was conducting operations in international
waters 70 miles south of Hainan Island on March 8 when the
ship was surrounded and harassed by five Chinese vessels.
Morrell said the U.S. defense attaché in Beijing has been talking
with China’s defense ministry about the incident.
daily.”
“This award is validation for
what we on board all know,”
said Ensign Allan Hamby,
Providence supply division
officer. “Our specialists do
amazing work.
They go above and beyond
in everything they do.”
What makes this more
remarkable, according to
Hamby, the competition
occurred while Providence was
on a deployment.
Taking a daily multivitamin
can be beneficial, however, if
you eat the recommended
daily servings from each food
group, you will get your daily
recommended amounts of vitamins.
Lastly, let’s talk about fluids.
You may be aware that you
should drink 8 to 10, 8 oz.
glasses of water a day. This is
true, but a good rule of thumb
is to divide your weight in half
and that amount is the number
of ounces that you should
be drinking a day. For example
a 150 pound person, 150 divided
by 2, equals 75. So that person
should drink 75 ounces of
a non caffeinated/non alco-
