Military marches with Irish parade By RICHARD ALEXANDER Navalog writer Leading Division II of the 53rd annual Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the military cut a proud swath through downtown Newport last Saturday. Thousands lined the parade route and cheered Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard units. The two-mile parade, a highlight of the Newport Irish Heritage Month celebration, stepped off from Newport City Hall on Broadway and ended at St. Augustin’s Church. Parade organizers estimated one of the largest crowds on record lined the route. As the military color guards, marching units, and floats passed through Lower Thames Street the noise level from the crowd rose in decibels. The Navy presence included Navy Band Northeast’s marching band, directed by Lt. Cbynernav320.qxd 3/19/2009 11:55 AM Page 9 Parade Continued from Page 8 Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST) program, all under Officer Training Command- Newport; a color guard from OTCN, plus a marching unit of 30 midshipman candidates from the Naval Academy Prep School. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit TWO Detachment Newport, N.E. Region, was also represented. “The parade was awesome!” said Yeoman 1st Class Adam Gunn. “Everyone had a great time, with no problems.” The Marine Expeditionary Boat Division 81, under Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron 8, pulled a 34-foot RHIB patrol boat on a trailer. Electronics Technician 1st Class Richard Baumert, who organized 15 enlisted for the boat division’s participation, said the parade was a great experience. “We just had amazing support from everyone along the route.” Naval Station Newport’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department float advertised upcoming public events, such as the Beach Boys concert on July 26. Dean Weidman, MWR director, said MWR was very excited for the opportunity to promote upcoming events to a large segment of the local population. “It was our first foray into the parade business, and it certainly turned out to be a positive experience for all involved,” he said. Master Chief Donald Graser, NAVSTA Command Master Chief, rode atop the Chief Petty Officer Association float of the USS Wasp, a 30-foot, 1/32nd scale replica of the aircraft carrier, hauled on a 40-foot flatbed trailer. He said 13 senior enlisted, plus Capt. Scott Jones, Commanding Officer, Surface Warfare Officers School Command, escorted the truck. “We were well-received; good reaction from the crowd,” Graser said. “Retirees stepped out of the crowd to shake our hands. We passed out Navy souvenirs…Navy Recruiting water bottles and rubber squeeze balls. The kids really appreciated the stuff.” Naval Station (NAVSTA) Fire Department entered its aerial ladder truck, and NAVSTA Security had one police unit marching. GO GREEN — Kids in St. Patrick’s Day outfits ride the Cluny School of Newport float.
