4 Monika Grothe, Curriculum vitæ, July 2012
– Was awarded three-year grant (140,000 Euros) under the “Rientro dei Cervelli” program
of the Italian Ministry for Education, Universities and Research for my research
proposal on CEP Higgs with the CMS detector
– Member of the R&D collaboration FP420 that established the feasibility of instrumenting
the region 420 m away from the CMS or ATLAS IPs with near-beam and
fast timing detectors to render possible detection of the diffractively scattered protons
in CEP, where the Higgs emerges from double-Pomeron exchange
– Led studies on improved ways of triggering on CEP Higgs (see also collaboration with
TOTEM, see below); led studies to assess the background from random coincidences
with protons from pile-up events
– Participated in studying the discovery potential for a light Higgs boson in the CEP
channel pp → pHp with H → WW∗ • Inclusion of a dedicated forward detectors trigger stream in the CMS trigger
– Investigated, in collaboration with TOTEM, possibility of using the TOTEM detectors
up to 220 m from the IP in the CMS trigger
– Principal author of the chapter on a dedicated forward detectors trigger stream in
the CMS Physics Technical Design Report (PTDR) Vol. 2
• Collaboration with TOTEM experiment which shares the IP with CMS
– Co-coordinator of the CMS/TOTEM diffractive and forward physics group in 2006:
Mandate was to establish the physics reach of combining the CMS and TOTEM
detectors, to coordinate the efforts of the two collaborations towards a joint program
and to demonstrate its feasibility
– Leading role in preparing a diffractive and forward physics report, jointly written with
TOTEM, that describes the physics reach of CMS in combination with TOTEM;
submitted to the LHCC as CERN/LHCC 2006-039/G-124, Dec 2006;
– Iamtheprincipal editor of the CMS/TOTEM report, together with J. Mnich, from
the CMS side
– My direct contributions to the report include the trigger studies and the study of
impact of pile-up background on the detection of CEP Higgs
• Gave 13 invited seminar talks on forward physics with CMS
CMS hardware work on the first level trigger electronics:
• CMS Level-1 Regional Calorimeter Trigger (RCT) Group:
– In production testing of RCT electronic boards responsible for developing software
tools for automated testing and an electronic logbook, in C++ and Java
– Participated in production tests of RCT boards at U Wisconsin
– Trained technicians and student hourlies
• After relocation to CERN, local U Wisconsin contact with major responsibility for the
RCT trigger software
– Responsible for integrating RCT control software into Trigger Supervisor framework
– Developed from scratch calorimeter trigger electronics slow control (detector controls
system – DCS) software based on commercial software package PVSS and the CERN
JCOP framework since CMS-wide available slow control solutions could not be used
– Responsible for maintaining calorimeter trigger DCS software as part of the CMS
central detector controls system
