President’s Message
Happy New Year Bridgeland! It was a pleasure to celebrate the holiday season with you
all at our Holiday Party in December and the Caroling Event organized by Centre Street
Church.
2013 is going to be a fabulous year and I welcome it with enthusiasm! Along with
welcoming in the New Year I am eager to also welcome others who are new to our fabulous
neighborhood. Welcoming others into our community is a strength of Bridgeland Riverside
and I believe sets us apart from any other. For example, years ago when our VP, Roseanne,
moved in down the street, her neighbour brought her muffi ns to welcome her to the
neighbourhood. Nawaf, the owner of Tazza Mediterranean Deli, also stopped by to say
welcome. “It’s like a small town”, says Penner. Th is act of welcoming had an impact. She
and her husband instantly decided they would never leave Bridgeland. It’s amazing what a
warm welcome can do and how it creates a supportive environment to all who reside in our
community!
I am always inspired by the engaging events and initiatives that are being lead and
continue to be led by residents, businesses, and key stakeholders in our community. Th ey too
establish a welcoming culture to our neighborhood. Deb Lee, a resident in our community,
is working hard to connect with our senior lodges in our neighborhood. She writes a regular
column in our newsletter entitled “Th e People and Places of Bridgeland/Riverside” whereby
she introduces our community to the various businesses and services. In this issue she
writes about a new senior’s apartment building called Columbus Place, which will house
President’s Message, from page 3
100 new residents due to move in between January and the end of
March 2013. We are thrilled to welcome new residents of Columbus
Place and those who have recently moved into McPherson Place, a
new 6 story urban condominium right here in Bridgeland/Riverside.
I’ve also had the privilege of meeting several new families into our
neighborhood and we welcome you to our neighborhood and look
forward to connecting.
We are also fortunate as a community when new businesses
move in to our neighborhood. We welcome Gunther’s Fine Baking
offering fantastic breads and pastries and Deville Café and Wine bar,
offering tasty delights and two of life’s most necessary elixirs! New
energy comes from new business development presenting creative
opportunities to grow our community and connect ourselves.
Our BRCA board, community residents, businesses, and key
stakeholders are working hard to build connections throughout
our community. Connecting with another may occur through the
many community events but it can also be as simple as knocking on
your neighbor’s door and introducing yourself. When we welcome a
newcomer, we create an inviting culture in our neighborhood where
diversity may thrive and our strengths become known. Welcome
to all our newcomers to Bridgeland/Riverside. We look forward to
connecting with you throughout 2013.
Meredith Road History-Part Two By Professor Z (Courtesy of the Crescent View newsletter)
We continue today where we left off last time.
In 1984, a number of former and present-day residents of Bridgeland/Riverside
were interviewed as part of a project funded by way
of a Canada Works grant in conjunction with the Bridgeland Riverside
Community Association and the Langevin Community School.
Some participants had resided in the area since the first decade of
the 1900’s. Here are some of their recollections of their time in the
‘hood, with special attention given to any mention they made of the
Meredith Road environs:
Some remember the Gypsies who would camp on the flats below
the General Hospital. Gypsy caravans were present in the area up
until the late 1920’s.
Participant #1 (L.A.), a former resident of Marsh Road, remembers
the Bishop Pinkham residence on Meredith Road (referred to
earlier) for its later reputation as a destination for gamblers from
across the river, and also for the fact that it was said to be haunted.
The adjacent barn burned down (date unknown) and not long after,
the house itself was torn down. The Bishop Pinkham home appears at
the centre of the picture accompanying this article. L.A also remembers
the houses below the hill east of the Centre Street Bridge which
were demolished when the hill “caved in” in the spring.
Participant #2 (A.A.) remembers sledding on “Samis Hill” (which
would have been where Holly Park stands today; the sled route would
probably have tracked the upper reaches of Meredith Road). He also
remembers Wiggins’ Hall in the basement of the Armour Block on
4th Street, where “coloured” people danced to music played on a Victrola,
as well as a gambling spot at Marsh Road and 6th St NE that
was raided by the police on more than one occasion.
Participant #3 (D.B.) remembers the imitation Kaiser burning on
Tom Campbell Hill at the conclusion of WW 1. She also describes
the approximate location of “Little Italy” as 2nd, 3rd and 4th Avenues
NE, between Edmonton Trail and 6th Street. D.B recalls a dentist
and doctor, both named Dickson, who had offices in the Armour
Building; one was known for having a
Meredith Road
“peg leg”. According to her, the oldest
grocery store in the neighborhood was
the Roma Grocery, on the site where
Alberta Brake and Clutch later operated
for many years.
Participant #4 (G.F.) had lived in
the vicinity since 1901. He too remembers
the Gypsy encampments,
as well as the natives camped south
of the General Hospital at Stampede
time. At 6th Street and Marsh Road
NE, revivals were held in a big tent
and “black” people attended. (Ed.
note- perhaps some attendees were
compelled by their spouses to come
the morning after a riotous evening at
the Wiggins Dance Hall!) This participant
also recalls Dr. Eastman in the Armour Block who was known
for owning a touring car that had to be reversed in order to make the
ascent up the 4th Street Hill. G.F. also remembers spending time as
a boy shooting crap outside the Beehive Confectionary, which was
located in the Morasch Block at 644 1st Ave NE.
Participant #5 (H.G.) recalls the Beehive as well, and that it was
located right next door to the Lagorra Cigar Factory, another tenant
in the Morasch Block. He also remembers that the site of the “Bridgeland
High Rise” was once the site of High Wo’s market garden (Ed.
note- he probably means Bridgeland Place in the Riverside area).
Participant #6 (O.H.) remembers the two boarding houses standing
at the top of the hill above Meredith Road, both of which were
big houses overlooking the city, later torn down for apartment construction.
Th e residents would teach new arrivals English as well as
other skills to assist them in transitioning to life in Canada. More
formal teaching of the residents was undertaken by a representative
from the Danish Lutheran church. (Ed. note- the two houses were
most likely 304 and 322 on 1st Avenue NE, just north of the site now
occupied by Holly Park; 304 was the Beveridge home mentioned
previously.)
Participant #7 (M.K.) describes the Bridgeland of the 1940’s and
50’s as a rough area, due mainly to the presence of numerous gangs of
boys. He recalls that the Isle of Capri was one of the “main spots” in
town and featured dining and dancing in the basement. Liquor was
supplied by local bootleggers since dining lounges weren’t licensed
until laws changed in 1958. (Ed. Note- Th e IOC was located where
the Edmonton Trail Carwash is today.)
Participant #8 (K.L.) remembers the former home of mayor (and
earlier, NWMP corporal) George Clift King, located at Meredith
Road and 6th St. NE. Th e Riverside Hotel had a beer parlour and
her dad would often stop there after work. She also recalls how many
local Germans felt threatened when the riot at the Riverside Hotel
took place in 1916 as they assumed the soldiers would come after
them next. Another memory is of ethnic Chinese market gardeners
with large holdings in the Riverside fl ats below the hospital. Th ese
merchants sold their produce door to door and at
the Calgary Public Market near City Hall; some
were so successful that by 1926 they could aff ord to build greenhouses
on their land.
Participant #9 (C.L.) arrived in the area in 1912 and remembers
that many local residents kept livestock - mostly cows, horses
and chickens- until a bylaw was passed in 1939 banning such activities.
In the 1920’s and 30’s apparently, a local cowherd would collect
residents’ cows and take them over to Nose Creek to graze. On their
homeward journey, each cow was reportably able to fi nd its own way
home.
Participant #10 (B.P.) stated that for the most part Bridgeland
smelt clean except when the wind blew from the east and one could
smell the city dump, once situated just east of Tom Campbell Hill
(Ed. note- the city dump’s former location, where Memorial Drive
once stood.) B.P. also remembers the large “Tom Campbell Hats” sign
on the west slope of Tom Campbell Hill and that many locals would
ride their motorcycles straight up to the top of the hill. According to
B.P., the Beehive Confectionary served “the best” hamburgers and
shakes, while a slightly older teenaged crowd favoured a neighboring
establishment, the Cozy Lunch. B.P. recalled the drinking and
gambling along the 4th Street/Edmonton Trail corridor in the 1930’s
and 40’s, and that the biggest bootlegger in the area then was “Shoey”
Shoemaker, a character well-known to city police, but one who was
nevertheless reputed to run a “clean” operation.
In her 2006 book “Spaghetti Western”, Maria Cioni describes her
father’s arrival in Calgary from Naples in 1923 and the development
of his traditional culinary skills such that by 1949 he was able to open
Calgary’s fi rst Italian restaurant, Gene’s Spaghetti Parlour, located at
111 4th St. NE. Th e restaurant proved so successful that it morphed
into Gene’s Dine and Dance, attracting curious Calgarians from all
walks of life, including many from the Stampeders football team.
Maria recalls that in order to evade Alberta liquor laws, many patrons
bought their own “brown bags”, which were then stowed by them
on a special ledge custom-built for that purpose beneath each dining
table. When the city police occasionally paid a visit, the bottles were
whisked off the tables back to the ledges. Gene Cioni later ran a successful
restaurant known as La Villa near the Shaganappi Golf Course
while his former landlord in Riverside (Luca Carloni) operated a supper
club called Th e Isle of Capri from Gene’s former premises; it was
Meredith Road, from page 3
destroyed by fire in the 1960’s under suspicious
circumstances.
Crescent Heights’ resident B. E. S. recalls
that in his youth he assisted a friend in the
Riverside area with a paper route from time
to time. He notes that unlike his own regular
route in Crescent Heights, the number of
newspapers sold down the hill in Riverside
bore a direct relation as to whether the “Ladies”
in the district had been rounded up by
police the night before and taken downtown;
when the officers had been especially thorough,
newspaper circulation could decline
from 150 to 50! Fortunately the Calgary
Herald would only charge him for the papers
actually sold when this occurred. On a much
less steamy note, he also remembers the Alberta
Ice warehouse east of the Riverside
Hotel which retailed ice for householders’
iceboxes before fridges became widespread;
when he was a lad in the 1930’s, the iceman
in his horse-drawn wagon would give him
shards of ice to cool down on hot days.
Former area resident B.B. remembers
that a popular meeting spot for locals was
Kwongs’ Grocery on 4th Street NE; the
proprietor Charlie Kwong’s son was a gifted
athlete by the name of Normie Kwong who
after having achieved legendary status as a
CFL player- known as the “China Clipper”in
the 1950’s went on to a successful business
career and later earned a further accolade
with his appointment as Alberta’s Lieutenant
Governor. Sweeney Shriner was another local
resident who had earlier- in the 1930’s and
40’s- become a household name as an NHL
player. B.B. remembers working in the Riverside
Chinese market gardens where, as a
boy, he earned the princely sum of ten cents
for each large sack of carrot tops he was able
to fill. With respect to the local “boy gangs”
previously mentioned, B.B. recalls that any
suitor from south Calgary with thoughts of
courting a local girl would be forthwith sent
packing by such lads back over the Langevin
Bridge. One of the more amusing stories
B.B. relates pertains to the old sandstone
Riverside School. During a cold snap in the
1930’s, one young attendee came up with
the idea of interfering with the school’s door
locks to such an extent that it would be necessary
to cancel school until the locks could
be repaired. His method was to introduce
certain bodily fluids into the doors’ locking
mechanisms (use your imagination here!); it was so cold then that his dream was fulfilled and
school cancelled for the day. We are reminded by this cautionary tale that our moms always
warned us not to lick doorknobs, and can only hope that the youthful offender didn’t sacrifice
any skin elsewhere on his person as a consequence of his dastardly deed.
TRIBUTE TO ZOLTAN NAGY
My friend, Zoltan Charles Nagy, a long time Bridgeland
resident died suddenly on May 21, 2011 at the age of 62.
Zoltan was a generous and gregarious man of endless energy who
loved life and his neighbourhood of Bridgeland. Born in 1949 he
grew up on a farm in St. Brieux, Saskatchewan with his twin sister
and four older siblings.
In 1979 he moved to Calgary and the following year bought his
house at 618 10th Street NE, at the top edge of the hill on the east
side, where he lived for 31 years.
He ran his business, Zoltan Nagy Home Furnishings and Zoltan
Home Staging and Design out of his Bridgeland home. Zoltan adored
living in Bridgeland, volunteered his services wherever he could, and
would tell anyone who would listen about the special place he lived.
My friend not only designed his own house but also countless
others, helping people create wonderfully comfortable environments
to live in. He also put his infectious energy to improving his own
neighbourhood.
Zoltan was a member of the City of Calgary’s ‘Adopt a Park
Program’ for most of the past 30 years. There was a small parkette on
the north side of his home, a short cut for pedestrians walking down
the 10th Street hill. The parkette was a muddy steep unmaintained
green spot in Bridgeland.
Zoltan, out of his own pocket took it upon himself to plant trees
and shrubs to beautify the green space. He even built steps at the
steep part of the short cut for safety. His efforts went way beyond the
‘Adopt a Park Program’ of watering and weeding. He was so proud
of the park; he would talk and take people on tours of the improved
green space.
Zoltan didn’t stop there. Five years ago he could no longer stand the
muddy, weedy hill across from his house on the west side of the 10th
Street hill. He put his energies
to plant various perennials and
bushes he collected from his
own property and his friends,
my plants included, to improve
the Bridgeland environment.
He faithfully maintained both
spaces with loving care and
immense pride.
I believe these spaces are
my friend’s gift to the people
of Bridgeland and The City
of Calgary. The spaces are a reflection of a wonderful man’s life,
his appreciation of aesthetic and community. It would be a great
tribute to him, as well as a wonderful example of community
involvement to others, to have the hill named after him as Zoltan
Hill. A tribute to him, and to individuals who, mostly anonymously,
improve the lives of those around them.
Family Financial Health
How much do you know about pyramids? This month we are
going to begin talking about one particular type of pyramid – the
financial planning pyramid.
Speculation
Growth & diversification
Savings & wealth accumulation
Protection
Let’s start with the base. We need a strong foundation to build a
plan just like you need a solid foundation for your home. The base or
foundation is PROTECTION. What do you need to do to protect
your lifestyle? There are 7 components:
1. Debt reduction – we hear this in the news every day. How
Canadians are mired in debt.
2. Emergency fund – this can be a savings account untouchable
except for emergencies or establishing a Line of Credit with your
financial institution.
3. Life insurance – would you really expect your spouse and children
to move in with your parents if you didn’t show up for dinner
tomorrow evening?
4. Income replacement insurance - how long could your family
survive if you had already received your last pay cheque? Your greatest
asset is not your home. It is your ability to earn an income.
5. Critical illness insurance – who do you know that had a heart
attack, a stroke or cancer? Did they see it coming? Would a lump
sum of cash have helped alleviate some of the stress?
6. Regular savings – usually setting up a Tax Free Savings. The
limit this year has increased to $5,500 a year for everyone 18 and
older with a SIN.
7. Will – who do you want to raise your children? Would you like
your money to go to the government? Separated but not divorced
– do you want your estranged spouse to inherit?
I look forward to your questions and comments! Please send them
to me at newsletter@brcacalgary.org
BRIDGELAND-RIVERSIDE COMMUNITY SAFETY
Tip of the Month: Victim Assistance Team
The Victim Assistance Team is composed of trained and committed
staff and volunteers who provide information, support and referrals
to victims of crime and tragedy through three programs:
Call Centre: Victim Support Advocates (volunteers) initiate phone
contact with victims of personal crime or tragedy providing case and
court updates and information; emotional support and referrals to
community agencies for counseling, bereavement and other appropriate
support agencies.
Contact the Call Centre at 403-428-8398 or toll-free 1-888-
327-7828. Victim Support Advocates can provide information on
the following Alberta Government Programs:
Victim Impact Statement
A victim impact statement allows you to express in writing to a
judge how being a victim of crime has affected you, and those close
to you. Upon conviction, this information is taken into consideration
by the judge before handing down a sentence.
Restitution
When charges have been laid in a criminal offence you can apply
for restitution. Restitution is a way for the offender to repay material,
property or financial loss that you have suffered.
Financial Benefits
If you have suffered a physical or emotional injury as a direct result
of being the victim of a violent crime that occurred in Alberta, you
are entitled to apply for Financial Benefits. The incident must be reported
to police, but does not require charges to have been laid. This
financial award is intended to assist you through a difficult time and
is not compensation.
HAPPY 2013 FROM BIKE CALGARY
A new year usually starts with two issues - Christmas bills and a desire/resolution to get fit. Why not look at biking to work as an easy and
enjoyable way to handle both.
Bike in the winter? Are you nuts? Biking can be quite comfortable in any season as long as you are prepared. There are a few questions you
need to ask yourself before getting started.
1. Do you have a bike in ride-ready condition? This means the bike has good working
brakes and tires, shifts properly, has a chain without rust, and can be winterized with lights
and fenders.
2. What is your commute route? Are you aware of existing pathways or marked bike routes
to get to where you work? Do coworkers or people in your building ride and how do they get
there?A fellow commuter can be your best source for advice.
3. Do you need special winter gear? Specialized bike gear is not required. Dress in layers,
keeping in mind that hands and feet are usually the hardest to keep warm. Keep a journal of
what you wore and what the weather conditions were and within 2 weeks you should be
able to get up, see the forecast and know how to dress for the day
4. Are there facilities at your work? Are you able to shower/change easily? If not, keeping
some moist towelettes/body cloths at your desk/locker will make a quick clean up in the
bathroom easy.
Biking to work is an easy way to keep fit without having to schedule extra time at a gym
that you pay for, and will help you keep some money in your wallet as you save on gas, parking
or transit costs. Want to learn more or see if one of our members can suggest a route for
you? Find answers and more at www.bikecalgary.org and become a member for free.
Bridgeland
...back in the day
by Larry Simon
Well, we had a good Christmas and nice New Year. We
sincerely hope this year will be a great year for all of us!
We were a community of a different generation. Most of
the kids’ parents were in the services. My eldest brother was in
the RCAF as an Airframe Mechanic. He was stationed down
east. During the war, his job was a little different than today.
In those days the Airframe Mechanic had to go up in the plane
they repaired. It was a way of making sure the work was done
properly and that the plane was safe.
After the war was over, the soldiers bought some souvenirs
home. We had hand grenades, rifles, swords, pistols, etc.
One of the kids threw a grenade at a teacher and blew the
side of the block stairs off. The teacher ducked behind the steel
that was the only incident I can remember.
We didn’t have bullying instead we all stood together and in
our new tough area. Our sports teams were outstanding and
considered to be the best. Our schools had trophies galore and
everyone was proud of being from our area. We were known
as “Little Italy” and “Little Germany” but it never bothered or
separated us, in fact it made our area stronger.
Is an RRSP your only option?
RRSP season is in full swing and
you’ve likely seen some ads reminding
you to get in and make contributions before
March 1st. This deadline is firm, so
if you do want to contribute and reduce
your 2012 tax bill you won’t want to miss
that date. As important in the first place
though is a review of whether you should
be contributing to an RRSP at all. There
are distinct advantages to an RRSP, but
maybe there are other ways to get these
same advantages:
1. Tax Deferral: An RRSP gives you a
tax break today and when you withdraw
the funds (presumably in retirement) you
are taxed on these funds as income. There
are other methods of investing and reducing
your tax bill including flow-through
shares or labour sponsored funds. Each
comes with its own risks and benefits and
you will want to examine these carefully
U8 & U10 Summer Leagues - start in July!
before deciding on a course of action.
2. Tax Sheltered Growth: Growth
within an RRSP is not taxable as it’s
accrued, but rather as it is withdrawn.
There are actually many ways you can
achieve this benefit aside from an RRSP.
Notably the Tax Free Savings Account
gives you that same shelter, along with
none of the funds being taxable on withdrawal.
Other potential options include
corporate class investments or universal
life insurance policies. Again, each has
its own drawbacks and advantages, so
you will want to consider these carefully
for your situation.
Truthfully, if you need both the upfront
tax savings and the tax deferred growth
an RRSP is a solid investment vehicle. As
your situation changes though, and you
get closer to retirement you are deferring
some of these taxes for a shorter and
