President’s Message<br />

As you know, the HPCA members voted to continue to<br />

lease our hall from the City <strong>and</strong> plan to arrange a sub-lease<br />

with another group provided we can get that all arranged by<br />

December 31 of this year.<br />

Having made this decision gives us certain rights, but<br />

it also dem<strong>and</strong>s of us certain responsibilities. Having our<br />

own community hall gives us the right to hold community<br />

events at the hall for little to no charge if we wish. Examples<br />

of these events would be dinners, family movies, Earth Day<br />

celebrations, BBQs, Music in the <strong>Park</strong>, meetings about<br />

development issues, Wine & Cheese events, etc.<br />

However, our responsibilities that come with<br />

having our own hall include the repairs <strong>and</strong><br />

maintenance of the hall. And, because we are a nonprofi<br />

t volunteer-run organization we need to save<br />

money where we can by doing many of the hall<br />

maintenance <strong>and</strong> repair tasks with volunteers from<br />

the community doing the work <strong>and</strong> sourcing the<br />

supplies to do the work.<br />

So, from time to time we will ask for your help<br />

to do various tasks or help at a Work Bee. We’d<br />

like you to commit to helping where you can, <strong>and</strong><br />

maybe you can bring a neighbour or a relative to<br />

help as well. Th e old adage of “many h<strong>and</strong>s make<br />

We are hosting a Christmas Craft <strong>and</strong> Bake Sale at the <strong>Highl<strong>and</strong></strong><br />

light work” applies here. For example, tasks that might take 10 people 3 hours of time each<br />

would require 15 hours of time each if only 2 people step forward to volunteer. Th at’s a lot<br />

to ask of just 2 people!<br />

So, from the <strong>Community</strong> Association end, we’ll try to give as much notice <strong>and</strong> as many<br />

details as we can for tasks that need doing at the hall (<strong>and</strong> other volunteer opportunities such<br />

as serving on committees), <strong>and</strong> I hope that the next time we ask for volunteers to help out<br />

with something at the hall or with the Association that you’ll come out to contribute. Or if<br />

you’re not available at that time or for that task, ask if there’s something else you could do at<br />

a time that will fi t into your schedule.<br />

Check elsewhere in this newsletter for more information on how you can help your<br />

community association.<br />

In late September, several spots of graffi ti <strong>and</strong> tagging appeared in <strong>Highl<strong>and</strong></strong> <strong>Park</strong>. Th e ones<br />

I became aware of have been reported to the City <strong>and</strong> have been discussed with our <strong>Calgary</strong><br />

Police Service <strong>Community</strong> Liaison Offi cer. Th e City advises that the best strategy for dealing<br />

with graffi ti when it occurs is to fi rst take a picture of it, make note of the address or closest<br />

intersection (i.e. SW corner of Centre St. <strong>and</strong> 40 Ave. NW), <strong>and</strong> report it to 3-1-1.<br />

If your property gets “tagged” you should clean it up as soon as possible by washing it off<br />

or painting over it. Th e idea is that if graffi ti is removed as soon as possible, the culprits won’t<br />

have the satisfaction of seeing their “tag” on display for long, <strong>and</strong> will therefore learn not to<br />

tag that location again.<br />

Finally, <strong>Highl<strong>and</strong></strong> <strong>Park</strong> has exp<strong>and</strong>ed our social media presence. On Facebook you can<br />

search under <strong>Highl<strong>and</strong></strong>-<strong>Park</strong>-<strong>Community</strong>-Association-<strong>Calgary</strong>. It should pull up the HPCA<br />

Ward 4 Update<br />

Wastewater Treatment in <strong>Calgary</strong><br />

Have you ever wondered what happens to the wastewater that<br />

drains from our sinks, tubs <strong>and</strong> toilets? It’s not a pleasant subject, but<br />

my curiosity got the better of me.<br />

I decided to see for myself how the City of <strong>Calgary</strong> h<strong>and</strong>les wastewater.<br />

After all, proper wastewater treatment is essential in protecting<br />

both public health <strong>and</strong> our environment.<br />

My staff <strong>and</strong> I toured the Pine Creek Wastewater Treatment Centre,<br />

one of three plants that treat over 430 megalitres of wastewater daily.<br />

The treatment process includes screening out larger solids, settling<br />

tanks, <strong>and</strong> using naturally occurring microorganisms instead of<br />

chemicals to remove organic matter. Filtration systems remove more<br />

impurities <strong>and</strong> ultraviolet techniques disinfect. Biosolids created during<br />

the process are used as fertilizer on local farml<strong>and</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> methane<br />

gas collected is used to heat the building.<br />

The innovative <strong>and</strong> earth-friendly processes used impressed me so<br />

much; I posted a video of our tour on my websites. It was definitely a<br />

learning experience that, once again, reminded me of the important<br />

role the City plays in our daily lives.<br />

Centre Street Construction – Update<br />

The Centre Street Reconstruction <strong>and</strong> Transit Priority Project between<br />

42 Avenue <strong>and</strong> 54 Avenue N.W. began on July 4. The project<br />

team intends to complete the reconstruction of the road bed <strong>and</strong> the<br />

new Transit only lanes by late fall (late November or early December).<br />

However, road construction is very weather sensitive <strong>and</strong> fall<br />

weather can be unpredictable. Therefore, when the road construction<br />

season ends, all lanes on Centre Street <strong>and</strong> access to side roads will<br />

be restored for the winter. Any work that may not be completed this<br />

year will be carried over until next spring/summer, if necessary.<br />

Construction began on the west half of Centre Street between 42<br />

Avenue <strong>and</strong> Laycock Drive N.W. This west side construction was<br />

extended to 54 Avenue N.W. in August. This work reduced the road<br />

to two lanes of traffic on the east side. These stages of construction<br />

are now complete.<br />

In the middle of October, construction will have fully shifted to<br />

the east side of Centre Street, between 42 Avenue <strong>and</strong> 54 Avenue<br />

N.W. <strong>and</strong> traffic will be moved to the west side of Centre. Some lanes<br />

<strong>and</strong> driveways will need to be closed at Centre Street in order to complete<br />

this stage of construction. Affected residents <strong>and</strong> businesses will<br />

receive h<strong>and</strong>-delivered notices of any closures. As sections of road are<br />

completed, they will be reopened to traffic.<br />

Some <strong>Calgary</strong> Transit stops will be temporarily re-located or closed<br />

as a result of construction.<br />

Because of ongoing lane reductions, motorists <strong>and</strong> Transit users<br />

should expect traffic delays to continue through this area until the<br />

end of the construction season in late fall. When the construction is<br />

done, the road will be completely re-built in this area, sidewalks will<br />

be wider, <strong>and</strong> the added Transit-only lanes will improve bus traffic<br />

movement through this area.<br />

We underst<strong>and</strong> that road work is an inconvenience to everyone<br />

<strong>and</strong> we appreciate your continuing patience <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ing during<br />

this project.<br />

Liaison Officer (CLO). The boundaries for the communities Marv<br />

Glaser is looking after have been changed, so the new CLO looking<br />

after <strong>Highl<strong>and</strong></strong> <strong>Park</strong> will be Will Johnson. Thanks for everything<br />

Marv, <strong>and</strong> we’re looking forward to working with you Will!<br />

INGREDIENTS:<br />

¼ cup olive oil<br />

1 large garlic clove, fi nely chopped<br />

1 540 ml can black beans, rinsed <strong>and</strong> drained<br />

1 pound fresh, ripe tomatoes, diced<br />

grated zest <strong>and</strong> juice of 1 large lime<br />

1- 2 tsp Tabasco sauce<br />

½ tsp dried oregano<br />

1 tsp ground cumin<br />

½ tsp salt, to taste<br />

¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro or parsely<br />

1 cup feta cheese, crumbled<br />

8 ounces rotella pasta (wagon wheels)<br />

PREPARATION: Combine all ingredients except feta <strong>and</strong><br />

cilantro <strong>and</strong> leave at room temperature for an hour. Cook<br />

pasta <strong>and</strong> drain well. Toss with cilantro <strong>and</strong> feta. Pasta<br />

can be served warm or chilled.<br />

Georges P Vanier School<br />

Every September in schools across the nation, hundreds of thous<strong>and</strong>s<br />

of students run to raise funds for the fight against cancer. The<br />

last school day of September saw hundreds of Georges P. Vanier students<br />

run for this cause.<br />

Georges P. Vanier has been working with the City of <strong>Calgary</strong> to develop<br />

programs to enhance the student experience. Four programs are<br />

now in full swing. Konnects seeks to help with the transition to grade<br />

7 from elementary school. Act Out for our grade 8 is an innovative<br />

school-based program for junior high age youth which uses drama as<br />

a way to learn, grow <strong>and</strong> deal with tough situations <strong>and</strong> life choices.<br />

The same issues are taken on in grade with the Spirit Girls program<br />

<strong>and</strong> the Wize Guyz program. The Wize Guyz program at Georges P.<br />

Vanier was featured in the Globe & Mail last spring.<br />

November will be exciting at Georges P. Vanier: Volleyball playoff<br />

<strong>and</strong> the start of Basketball. Report cards go home on November 23rd,<br />

<strong>and</strong> the fall term assembly is taking place at 12:30 on Nov 28th in<br />

the gymnasium.<br />

Buchanan Elementary<br />

AREA SCHOOL NEWS<br />

Students had a very busy month in October. The clubs are in<br />

full swing: YMCA Leadership Club, Computer Club <strong>and</strong> Green<br />

Thumbs. The Green Thumbs group visited the vacant lot across from<br />

the school to see the changes that fall brings to the plants. The Book<br />

Fair was held <strong>and</strong> school photos taken.<br />

The grade 5/6 class visited Fish Creek <strong>Park</strong> while grade 4/5 students<br />

went to the Museum of the Regiments. Students in the Skill<br />

classes began their swimming lessons at Emily Follensbee School. The<br />

Earth Rangers, an environmental group, visited the school.<br />

Grade 6 participated in Free the Children “We Day” rally at the<br />

Saddledome on October 24<br />

November 5, 6, 7, Aussie X Program teaches students how to play<br />

cooperative, non-competitive Australian Games.<br />

Buchanan Parent Council continues to collect Campbell’s Soup<br />

labels. Drop them off at the school. Remember to buy your SUTP<br />

We are still being beautified. Panelling is being installed<br />

under the windows that went in last spring.<br />

This should make the school much more attractive<br />

<strong>and</strong> more of an aesthetic asset to the community.<br />

James Fowler High School<br />

The staff of James Fowler have planned an excit-<br />

ing, productive <strong>and</strong> engaging school year <strong>and</strong> it is our<br />

wish that all of our students will take full advantage<br />

of all the wonderful <strong>and</strong> rich opportunities that the<br />

school community has to offer.<br />

Our enrollment this year is approximately fifteen<br />

hundred students (an increase of one hundred students<br />

from the previous year). Most of our students<br />

travel from many northeast neighborhoods <strong>and</strong> a<br />

few of the newly developed northwest communities<br />

in addition to the communities surrounding James<br />

Fowler. As a result of our increase in students, we<br />

have been supported by <strong>Calgary</strong> Transit who has added an additional<br />

bus <strong>and</strong> re-routed existing bus routes to better service our students.<br />

In its fifth year, our Arts-Centered Learning alternative program<br />

continues to offer students an opportunity to learn the core high<br />

school curriculum through an arts-based focus. In its third year, our<br />

Advanced Placement program continues to attract many students<br />

who wish more academic rigor while completing the core high school<br />

curriculum. We are also pleased to off er a full range of core <strong>and</strong> option<br />

Knowledge <strong>and</strong> Employability courses for students in all grades.<br />

At James Fowler it is our goal to meet the educational needs of all<br />

of our students <strong>and</strong> also to improve our facility for our students. As<br />

such we have installed thirty new cafeteria tables <strong>and</strong> have installed<br />

two new counters where students can eat their lunch or study. Also<br />

we have updated our library bookshelves <strong>and</strong> have created a student<br />

study space. As we continue to improve the facility at James Fowler<br />

High School for our students, we are focused on creating a more<br />

student-focused space infused with color <strong>and</strong> energy.<br />

Fall is both an exciting <strong>and</strong> busy time at James Fowler High School<br />

as we focus on the start of the fi rst semester. Teachers have created<br />

opportunities to take students beyond the classroom experience by<br />

off ering a full range of co-curricular <strong>and</strong> extra-curricular activities<br />

through clubs, fi ne <strong>and</strong> performing arts, volunteerism, athletics <strong>and</strong><br />

curriculum-based clubs <strong>and</strong> activities. Whether students are a new<br />

grade ten student, a new student to James Fowler or a continuing<br />

grade eleven <strong>and</strong> twelve student, we actively encourage all students to<br />

get involved in the community of the school <strong>and</strong> become involved in<br />

as many activities as possible.<br />

Our School Council provides an excellent opportunity for parents<br />

<strong>and</strong> guardians to learn about the school <strong>and</strong> to have a voice in the<br />

education our children. School Council meetings are held the fi rst<br />

Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the library conference<br />

room. If you are a parent of a James Fowler High School student, we<br />

would welcome your attendance <strong>and</strong> support at our monthly meetings.<br />

We are appreciative of our very supportive parents on our School<br />

Council who are committed to improving our school. Last year, in<br />

addition to our School Council members, parents volunteered their<br />

time over two days at a Casino to raise funds for our students. With<br />

this generous donation to our school last year, we were able to purchase<br />

a new 2013 Bluebird 65 passenger bus. Th is year our casino<br />

is scheduled for November 4 <strong>and</strong> 5. If you are a parent of a James<br />

Fowler student <strong>and</strong> would like to assist our parents with this Casino,<br />

please contact the school.<br />

We are excited to have full service technical shops that are available<br />

to our community. If you have a need for service in Autobody, Auto<br />

Mechanics, Cosmetology or catering from our Commercial Foods<br />
