Hana and Emil have an uneven relationship. Hana<br />
is a queen of the silver screen, enjoying all the perks<br />
of life as an actress, and Emil is a mediocre radio<br />
news personality…and jealous husband. However, it<br />
is the late 1930’s on the eve of Hitler’s occupation of<br />
Czechoslovakia, and Hana is Jewish. Suddenly, the<br />
tables are turned on their respective public lives. Hana<br />
is forced to hide at home disguising her ethnicity while<br />
Emil has been identified as a rising star by the local SS<br />
liaison who is keeping tabs on the information that is<br />
released on the radio broadcasts. To find something to<br />
do with her time, Hana sneaks through the basement<br />
In 19th century Sicily, rebellious Angela is considered to<br />
be possessed by evil and must endure brutal beatings<br />
by her father, the quarry master. When her best friend<br />
Sara is forcefully transferred to the mainland, Angela is<br />
left in the dreary village. Years pass and Sara returns.<br />
Their childhood friendship deepens and eventually they<br />
give in to their shared passion for one another. When<br />
Angela’s father insists she marry a successful quarry<br />
worker, she defiantly refuses, stating that she will marry<br />
Sara instead. Her father responds by imprisoning her in<br />
the cellar, where other family secrets are buried. Fearing<br />
the loss of her only child, Angela’s mother blackmails<br />
the town priest and offers her husband the son he always<br />

of her building to the movie theater next door. There she befriends<br />
Petr, the theater operator. Emil has promised to be Hana’s protector<br />
but they seem to be traveling on opposing trajectories, in both their<br />
marriage and everyday activities. To complicate matters, there has<br />
been an assassination attempt on the SS Deputy Protector and Emil<br />
becomes a prime suspect. Visually rich and highly stylized, Protektor is<br />
a haunting period drama.<br />
