Page 2 Quilters By The Sea September 2012 Wrap-up -- Temecula Retreat 2012 Well retreat has come and gone and we hope that we helped you all “escape reality” for awhile. We want to thank everyone who attended and everyone who contributed to this event – whether you were a vendor who made a gift or donation or an attendee who just had a positive attitude and went with the flow. We all came together to share our love for quilting and to have a relaxing and fun time and make some new friends. There were also several “retreat angels” who contributed to the success of this event: Chris Panos led the “Swimmettes” through a very professional synchronized swimming routine Friday night that amazed us all. Kudos to these performers – they get better every year (and the group gets larger). And many thanks to Callaway Vineyards, who provided us with a case of wine to enjoy at our wine event following the swim. Randy Miller and Linda Fowler organized the “Jelly Roll Race” which produced about 20 quilt tops for charitable purposes. There were a lot of participants and they were good sports to wear the “jelly roll rag” strips on their heads! Patti Pascal won the race with a time of 37 minutes and change. Brandi Kelly-Contreras, Carol Jurado and Kasey Egelus dressed up as “Ruby’s Girls” and entertained us by lip-synching a couple of oldies (“Lollipop”, “Sugartime”) before serving us fabulous banana splits at Saturday’s ice cream social. Too much fun. Vicki Allred and Kayleen Leone led us in a ukulele sing-along while we enjoyed the desserts. Singing those old songs mellowed everyone out and made for a nice, relaxing evening. There was also the block contest, the gift (one yard of fabric) exchange, the puzzle contest, the treasure hunt at Quilter’s Coop (who went far beyond our expectations and not only hid prizes throughout the store but sent back a gift bag for all retreat attendees, whether they went to the treasure hunt or not! Thank you Quilter’s Coop!) and the final Show n’ Tell on Sunday morning where we displayed our work and awarded the prizes. Lori Davies won the “Crowd Pleaser” award – a two-night stay at Inspirations quilting retreat in Big Bear Lake – for her wonderful American flag quilt. Sandy Carreon won the block contest, with a beautifully pieced hot-air balloon design. She not only won all the blocks but a gift basket from Calico House too. New this year was the “kindness beads” award… won by Brandi Kelly-Contreras. Everyone received a pair of beads in their goodie bags. If someone did something kind for you, you could give her/him your beads. Conversely, if someone did something not-so-nice, you could take their beads away! It was a lot of fun watching the beads go back and forth and maybe made us all go out of our way to be a little more helpful! Carol Garcia won the “Guess How Many Fat Quarters” contest and received a $25.00 gift certificate to the Fat Quarter Quilt Shop.com plus all of the fat quarters. And Kay Zellmer won an extra pair of hands for next year (that’s all I’m sayin’). And those industrious girls in Room 1 won the puzzle contest, even though they later admitted that their puzzle was way easier than Room 2’s. And Carol Jurado won the “best-decorated nametag” prize… complete with a pipe cleaner “crown.” Mary and I thank you all for attending and participating in the fun.
