4 | WINTER 2011 | TEXAS CHAPTER
An Intangible Benefit of ASID…..FRIENDS!
By this printing, we will be enjoying our holidays. As I write, the weather
is cool, and I’ve been “on the job” as your president, for a couple of weeks. I
attended the ASID Texas Chapter Student Symposium in Dallas, October 14-
15, 2011, San Antonio’s first ever Premiere Night October 27, and Austin’s Design
Excellence Awards on November 4. Those events inspired me to write about
one of my favorite ASID membership benefits.....personal relationships.
Anyone in ASID leadership is often asked, “What do I get for my money
from ASID?” I asked that question, albeit not so nicely, and look what happened to me! I can rattle off a
list of tangible member benefits all day long, and they are good ones. You can find them on our ASID Texas
Chapter website (www.asidtx.org). But I also enjoy the “intangible” benefits of relationships as well.
This was my second Student Symposium to attend. Did you know that planning for this event takes an
entire year and rivals the preparations for a celebrity wedding? Did you know that it takes an entire team
to successfully address every minute detail involved in this event? Did I mention, they are all ASID volunteers?
If we had to outsource event planning for Student Symposium, the price tag would be steep. But
our dedicated ASID friends performed all the tasks flawlessly and without complaint. Please join me in
thanking The 2011 ASID Student Symposium Committee: Aaron Duke, Allied ASID; Lisa Barron, Allied
ASID; Peter Dedek, PhD, ASID; Laura McDonald Stewart, ASID; Lisa DiOnne, Allied ASID; Allen Hart,
ASID; Kathryn Nelson, Student ASID; Lori Watkins, Allied ASID.
Serving alongside the committee members gave me insight into their strengths. ASID is made up of
some really amazing people. I got to meet students from all over the state of Texas! The students were
treated to tours, portfolio/resume reviews, panel discussions, a judged charette, presentations from “the
real world” of design, showroom tours, scholarships, awards, and lots of food. No organization does more
for students than ASID does, and I personally reminded them all of this fact! This event is possible because
the ASID Texas Chapter is financially sound, and believes in investing in our future.
San Antonio’s Premiere Night was specifically created to provide an opportunity for ASID industry
partners and practitioners to meet each other, develop relationships, see the latest available products, and
discuss their projects. We had at least 32 vendor tables and 125 attendees over and above the IP count.
The food was delicious and the evening setting permitted a very relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. I
watched in amazement as my friends, Lynley Serratt, Allied ASID, and Tessa Burns, Industry Partner ASID,
and their team, enjoyed the fruits of months of labor. We gained new IP members from this event, and
the excitement from new relationships was palpable. ASID events like Premiere Night foster relationships
that span the age spectrum from the youth of our students to the maturity of our seasoned practitioners
and industry partners. I don’t know about you, but I love watching each group appreciate the other,
and learn from one another. With each new client, I can hardly wait to give my ASID friends the business,
especially supporting our local businesses. We need each other now more than ever!
Any trip to Austin is a treat for me. I graduated from UT, my parents and most of my immediate family
live there. So when I get my invitation for Austin’s Design Excellence Awards presentation, my RSVP is
Texas Chapter Communication Director 2011-2013
If you haven’t heard by now, ASID has undergone a re-branding. The
campaign was rolled out in June and by now you should see the red and white
new ASID logo on all communications.
Many of you are probably used to getting evites from your design communities,
but unfortunately they are no longer “brand compliant”. You’ll probably
hear this word more as time goes on, but national has undergone quite
an exhaustive campaign to make sure that each chapter looks the same in all
their communications. So, look for alternative notices regarding meetings
and events from your design communities and check the ASIDTX.org website
too!
With the re-branding campaign there are new appellation logos for our
use. You can find them on the ASID Texas website for Professional Members:
http://www.asidtx.org/members/benefits_of_membership and for IP members:
http://www.asidtx.org/design_products_services/industry_partner_benefits.
You can also log into the www.asid.org website and find them there as well.
instantaneous. Jennifer Burggraaf, ASID, and Jill Williams, ASID, and their
entire team of volunteers, organized this year’s 26 annual event. The
Austin ASID IPs are friendly, informative, and supportive. Each year, I
make a special effort to visit each and every table, and to thank them on behalf
of ASID Texas Chapter for providing the products essential for us to execute
our designs.
As the awards were presented and the winner approached the podium,
applause erupted all around. I realize that some view us as “competitors” and
to be sure, we are. Beyond that fact however, we were so excited for each
award winner...really, genuinely thrilled for their successes. ASID members
are extremely talented and I’m honored to be part of an organization that
rewards competition and hard work.
ASID is full of friends. Some friends are from relationships forged decades
ago. Some friends are brand new and fill us with energy. I’m glad you are one
of my mine. We make a difference in this world. Enjoy your blessings and
your holidays. Best wishes for your continued success in this new year!
A Re-branding Story Continued
Please keep in mind, the appellation logos are only in black and white at this
time. If you have any questions regarding the new brand guidelines, please
refer to: www.asidbrandguide.org/ .
If you are an Industry Partner member and want to send out information
about your product or events to the members of the Texas chapter, contact
the Texas chapter office.
I also want to encourage you to please share any news you may have…promotions,
new jobs, awards, or certifications with us to include in our chapter magazine.
Since our chapter magazine is archived online, you can link the magazine
from the ASID Texas website back to your website, blog or Facebook
page to bring you or your company higher in the SEO rankings.
Don’t forget about our ASID Facebook page as well! This is a great place
for you to post your events, let your fellow ASID members know about accomplishments
or even if you’re looking for a job or have a job opening! We’re
METROCON Expo & Conference
The Most Convenient Event for Industry Connections, Continuing Education & Innovative New Products
By Rosemarie Rene, ASID, RID
METROCON Expo & Conference, is recognized as the Southwest region’s
most impressive two-day tradeshow featuring the latest in products and
innovative ideas to our vital design industry members including; interior
designers, architects, facility managers, and interior design students. The
2011 event exemplified a great success despite the slowly recovering
Architecture and Design industry.
All of the dedicated volunteer committee members of METROCON11 Expo
& Conference are pleased to announce that the event attracted 2,447
participants from 21 states, as well as from outside the U.S.A. The budgetconscious
show that is now in its ninth year sold all of its 37 sponsorships
by February 12th and sold all of its 369 booths nine days ahead of the official
deadline with a waiting list of 10 prospective exhibitors.
This exciting annual event is organized through landmark volunteer
collaboration between the Texas Chapter of ASID and the Texas-Oklahoma
Chapter of IIDA. In a determined effort to serve the corporate, healthcare,
hospitality, institutional, multifamily, residential, and retail sectors, the two
organizations unite to offer the best in exhibitors and interior design
continuing education for their members and beyond – all located within
our design center community.
Held at Dallas Market Hall [2200 Stemmons Fwy, Dallas, TX 75207] on
Thursday, August 11 and Friday, August 12, 2011, METROCON11 offered
attendees 242 diverse vendors, 51 interior design-related continuing education
courses and a happy hour designed especially for networking.
INDUSTRY SUPPORT
Prices for both exhibitors and attendees are extremely low when compared
to similar events around the USA. This is due to the hard work of a handful
of ASID Texas and IIDA Texas-Oklahoma volunteers who make up the
dedicated METROCON Committee, and the generosity of 37 show sponsors
– including 2011 Title Sponsor, Business Interiors by Staples, and 2011
Media Sponsor, Design Guide. If you are interested about becoming a 2012
Sponsor, please email Sponsor Liaison, Steve Patterson:
sponsor@metrocon.info.
The committee would like to congratulate the following exhibitors who are
the 2011 recipients of the Pegasus Exhibitor Awards:
• Best Promotional Campaign – Adleta Corporation
• Most Informative Exhibit – Wilson Office Interiors
• Best New Product – Nucraft
• Best Overall Exhibit – SantaMargherita
Haworth, Meletio Lighting and Electrical, Seal Tex, Tufenkian Carpets,
and UltraMedia, Inc. supplied furnishings, lighting and video equipment to
improve the appearance and function of our outstanding ASID Texas
booth, which was wonderfully designed, assembled and dismantled by
René Designs (Oscar and Rosemarie René, ASID) this year. Many thanks to
Alina Phillips, who contributed to the launch of the new ASID brand in the
ASID booth through the contribution of her red line drawings depicting
iconic furniture pieces and accessories.
8 | WINTER 2011 | TEXAS CHAPTER
We sincerely thank all of the ASID Industry Partners and other vendors
who participated as Exhibitors in the tradeshow, but a note to the Industry
Partners out there who offer residential products and services:
Residentially-focused designers want you there! Think about it: There is a
“Wow Factor” when you run across something new and unexpected at a
tradeshow. Our members are always looking for new sources, and when
you are not there, you are not on their radar. There are a great deal of residentially-focused
designers attending METROCON every year, and they
desperately want you to participate, so plan on being at the 2012 show,
which will take place Thursday, August 9 & Friday, August 11, 2012! If you
are interested in finding out more about becoming a 2012 Exhibitor, please
email exhibitors@metrocon.info.
VOLUNTEER POWER
A team of detailed volunteers from the Texas Chapter of ASID and the
Texas-Oklahoma Chapter of IIDA executed METROCON11. For nine years,
the professional organization’s has systematically planned the conference
as a service to their members. Each year a portion of the income from the
event is donated to the chapters to fund special educational and recognition
programs, as well as scholarships and charities earmarked by the individual
organizations.
As the METROCON11 Co-Chair, I would like to thank the following people
(listed in alphabetical order) who worked so hard to make ASID Texas’
participation another tremendous success:
Dianne Etheredge, ASID, IIDA, RID, Past Presiding Chair (2010)
Isin King, Allied Member ASID, 2011 Exhibitor Liaison
Steve Patterson, ASID IP Rep, RID, 2011 Sponsorship Liaison
Ann Riedel, Allied Member ASID, 2011 Volunteer Coordinator
Laura McDonald Stewart, ASID, IIDA, LEED AP, RID, Administration /
PR & Marketing
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Pat McLaughlin, ASID,
RID, and Donna Vining, FASID, IIDA, RID, for devoting their Thursday
afternoon to judging the Pegasus Exhibitor Awards, as well as recognize
our devoted ASID Texas Chapter Administrator, Pat Gallagher, and ASID
Membership Recruitment Manager, Jacqueline Lucas, for manning our
booth throughout the show. Without these volunteers and the countless
other on-site ASID volunteers, METROCON11 Expo & Conference would
never have been the great success that it was.
Each year participating as a volunteer I experience a personal gratification
in organizing this event with creative colleagues from the Texas Chapter of
ASID and the Texas-Oklahoma Chapter of IIDA. I applaud their dedication
and all members working to strengthen both our organization and our
profession!
Visit www.metrocon.info to find a link to view photos from this year’s
event and to sign up to receive exhibitor and attendee notifications in order
to stay informed about METROCON12, which will take place in Dallas on
ASID interior designers directly and profoundly
impact the lives of those occupying the spaces we
create. We design both functional and aesthetically
beautiful spaces. Never have these truths been more
personal, than during my current project.
Eddie Moreno, Jr., a high school senior, basketball
star, and all around great kid, was shot in the neck
during a road rage incident, and is now permanently
paralyzed from his chin down. The oldest of 4
boys, the family lived in a small, cramped, old house,
much in need of extensive repair. The plea for help
hit the airwaves and several members of the “Design
Team” responded. “Operation Bring Eddie Home”
was launched.
It was determined that the house was not “fixable”.
With fear and the full knowledge that once the house
was stripped down to studs, there was no point of
return, AND that we would be committed to months
of personal sacrifice, we forged ahead. Complete
strangers became best friends in the fires of difficulty.
Discovering termite and mold damage confirmed that
our decision was the correct one, not to mention the
narrow doorways and numerous thresholds Eddie
would encounter. His oxygen tanks, monitoring equipment,
his sensitivity to dust and heat, and a totally
independent electrical supply for his bedroom, further
confirmed the need for a complete renovation.
Our ASID San Antonio Design Community rallied
to help! ASID interior designers, industry partners,
and students have offered their help, give their
time, expertise, products, and encouragement. In
these tough economic times, I hated to even ask for
donations, but the kindness and generosity of our IPs
has left me in tears. Without asking for anything in
return, they have given tens of thousands of dollars
of product to renovate the Moreno home.
In the midst of tragedy, blessings abound.
1) We have grown to love and admire Eddie Moreno, Jr.
and his entire family (who feed the workers each
weekend)!
2) ASID and Universal Design were shared with a whole
new group of people. Universal Design principles
were incorporated and explained to all who would
listen. Every family members’ needs were considered
and incorporated.
3) We have witnessed an outpouring of tangible giving
by our ASID Industry Partners.
10 | WINTER 2011 | TEXAS CHAPTER
4) We have met new contractors, installers and suppliers
who we trust and will do business with in the future.
5) ASID has gained some new Industry Partners.
6) Our students have lived the powerful gift in volunteering.
The two general contractors have patiently
guided the Texas State University students through
hands on installations. Eddie Jr. was bound for Texas
State University after graduation, so their presence
was especially appreciated.
7) For most of us, this has been the hardest project we’ve
undertaken in our careers Now we know what we
are capable of.
We have the finish line in sight as we eagerly await
Eddie Moreno, Jr.’s homecoming. Having lived in separate
locations since March, the Moreno family simply
wants to be “all together” under one roof especially for
the holidays. We have designated a special spot for their
Christmas Tree...in the front window of course!
We are proud that ASID and the entire team of dedicated
volunteers created a new home for the Morenos,
so that they can create new memories. Eddie Jr. will
our professional and IP members in San Antonio. Several individuals and businesses
throughout the San Antonio community came together to help Eddie
Moreno, Jr. and his family create an environment that will benefit everyone
in the home.
San Antonio Design Community Helps to Bring Eddie Home
Written into our National Chapter Core Values, as they relate stewardship,
I found this statement: “Through volunteerism and partnerships with
community service projects, we share our gifts and talents as designers to
help those in need in our communities. As professionals, we are stewards
for our clients, the profession, the Society and the environment.”
Please let me know of someone in your Design Community who is
have complete freedom in every room of his new home,
including a special spot in his room to welcome guests,
play XBOX, check his Facebook page, and enjoy the sun
on his new deck.
NEWS
Using Home Technology to be Green
Submitted by Bill O'Connor of Dallas Sight and Sound
Over the past few years much has been said about reducing
our environmental footprint - being “green.” Many people
have taken steps to reduce their impact on our ecosystem
by buying more energy-efficient or hybrid cars, taking
public transportation, recycling, etc. What many
people never consider is using control systems in the
home to help save our environment.
Having a “green home” means more than simply
being energy efficient; one must look at the big
picture. Being green also means minimizing environmental
impacts, increasing the building’s
service life, and providing a clean and healthy
atmosphere WITHOUT giving up comfort!
Though the focus here is on home control systems,
let’s look first at what we might do in the building
process to lessen the environmental impact. Can the
home be designed to minimize the clearing of the lot? Can recycled materials
be used for any of the building supplies? Can materials be sourced
locally instead of from out of the state or country? And what are the most
durable materials that can achieve your design objectives?
The best way to reduce impact on the environment is to reduce consumption,
not by co-generation (solar panels, for example). Let’s look at some of
the things to consider in designing electronic systems for the home (hint:
do this early in the design process). One of the most obvious areas is
lighting. There are numerous types of lighting available today – LED,
compact fluorescent, good ol’ incandescent – the use of each will be determined
by the goal of the light, whether it be general lighting or purpose
lighting like desks or art lights. Lighting can be turned on or off based on
certain events, like arming or disarming of the security system; or astronomic
clocks that know the position of the sun and how it changes each
day; or occupancy or light sensors. Planning to maximize the efficiency of
a lighting system is multi-faceted and involves many people: architect, interior
designer, lighting designer, electrician and electronic systems designer.
Dimming lights also extends the life of each lamp. Dimming a bulb 10%
roughly doubles its life! And depending on the type, some bulbs have
mercury or other dangerous elements in them, so extra care must be taken
in disposing them. So if we can make them last longer, we won’t be filling
14 | WINTER 2011 | TEXAS CHAPTER
landfills or potentially releasing
dangerous toxins into the environment.
Integrating the air conditioning/heating
system is essential to
increase efficiency. It can be
controlled automatically through
scheduling, and changed according to
differing needs. For example, you
might have it go to 78° while you are
gone every day, but turn it down if you
were staying home with a sick child. Or if
you have visitors who have over-stayed
their welcome, you can set their room
to get uncomfortably warm, until they
get the message!
Motorized shades are another way to reduce the
load on the system. For example with an astronomic
clock or light sensor, shades can be pre-programmed to close
on the west side in the afternoon. Or, in cold winter months, to open to
harvest the sunlight and the warmth it brings. Again, consultation with an
electronic systems designer can help you determine the best strategy for
you.
One of the biggest challenges in load management is “phantom loads” –
a.k.a. standby losses. A typical home can waste several hundred dollars a
year on standby losses. Devices that do not need to be on or plugged in (like
your DVD player or TV or small electronics/phone chargers – any device
that draws power even when “off”) should be physically disconnected from
the power (switched off with a power strip or managed by a control
system) to eliminate the energy waste.
Saving energy is much like losing weight - if we monitor our usage, we can
make better decisions about where to cut back. An educated consumer
aware of usage patterns can take steps to reduce energy consumption.
Many control systems allow you to see your energy consumption, either
on-site or over an Internet connection, or from an iPhone, iPad or Android
device. If you have feedback and notification of significant energy waste
you can dramatically reduce consumption. Even something as simple as a
dirty air filter (which reduces air flow to your HVAC system, making it
work harder) can be checked. Putting in periodic reminders for you or
your staff is simple and can save you thousands of dollars.
These electronic systems are not just for new homes. If you have an
existing home, often wires can be run to allow you to take advantage of
these technologies. And if wiring is not feasible, wireless technologies have
improved to the point that they are viable alternatives.
Putting electronics into a home can seem counter-intuitive to saving
energy. But the key is to make your home as comfortable and enjoyable as
possible for your lifestyle, then design the systems around how you live
your life. Products can be chosen according to their environmental footprint,
then managed by a properly installed control system in order to
maximize efficiency. Be sure to consult with a properly trained electronic
systems designer to make sure you get the best bang for your buck.

UltraMedia, Inc. Goes “Tech” in Texas
Contemporary Theater with Auralex
When Mike Brock, lead designer for UltraMedia, was asked to install a
state-of-the-art entertainment system in a Frisco home, he turned to
Auralex® Acoustics for the theater’s acoustical treatments.
The 6,000-square-foot home and party barn boast a fully integrated
system, including audio, video, and lighting. Auralex helped to create a
high-end entertainment zone where the family can enjoy movies and
sporting events.
Auralex's custom panels were installed throughout the theater. The treatments
include absorption, diffusion, reflection, and bass trapping, with
materials hidden behind the fabric surface. The components are custom fit
on site, allowing for dimensional change or room irregularity.
The media room features an attached game room — both spaces decorated
in Texas Tech colors, as the homeowners are major university supporters.
The interior designer used three grey in the acoustic panels. To maintain
the Tech theme, the theater features five opaque glass LED columns that
shine bright red.
Another feature of the theater is the traditional seating, with a bar and
barstools at the back. This presented a unique audio challenge, as the bar
was constructed entirely out of metal. To deaden ringing, UltraMedia had
the metal posts filled with sand.
The entire theatre is constructed of sound-reducing drywall, with a solid
core door, to help isolate the space acoustically. The theater features a
thick, heavily padded carpet so that no additional ceiling treatment was
needed.
The theater features a 9.2 surround system. “We took it as far as we could
to make the room sound great and not have any rattles or ringing,” adds
Brock. The installation included a long list of high-end home theater gear.
EnviroGLAS Announces Name Change to Glass Recycled
As of September 20, Texas-based EnviroGLAS will be
become ‘Glass Recycled’ – a corporate strategy that will
reflect its expanded scope and service to the commercial
and residential building products industry.
According to Tim Whaley, inventor and founder of the
original EnviroGLAS process of recycling and transforming
glass and porcelain into beautiful, sustainable
applications, “the growth of major commercial applications
for our environmentally-friendly products has
resulted in our expansion and development of four distinct brand offerings.
We felt our new name and corporate identity of ‘Glass Recycled’ more
accurately reflects our expanded scope...”
With this name change comes the creation of four distinct brands under
the ‘Glass Recycled’ umbrella – offering architects and designers the ability
to create totally custom combinations for floors, walls, recycled glass countertops
and specialty décor items. ‘Glass Recycled’ not only reflects these
many added applications but further communicates the company’s philosophy
of creating stunning products that are as were as environmentally
friendly as they were beautiful.
Glass Recycled’s major premise is taking unused glass and porcelain products
of all shapes, sizes and colors and combining them in a unique epoxy
system to create a granite-like product that has the added benefit of total
customization in both color choices and final use. Like granite and other
terrazzo-like materials, Glass Recycled products are extremely durable and
STUDENT
NEWS
2011 ASID Texas Chapter Student Symposium
Students on the “Tour of Duty” of the Arts District
On October 13-15, 2011, 90 students and 20 practitioners, industry partners,
and educators from across the state participated in Dallas’ own Interior
Design Boot Camp. This annual Student Symposium drew participants
from 16 colleges/universities all across the state of Texas.
Students began their experience Thursday evening with a “Boondoggle”
through Slocum Street Style. Their next stop was “Chop Chop” to mingle
and enjoy beverages and food with ASID leaders at Ellen S. Holt. Ellen also
led us through her journey in the industry and shared her continued passion
for textiles and the creation of her amazing hand created trim.
During the Friday morning “Call to Arms” breakfast/registration the
students were hosted by Herman Miller in their incredible showroom.
They were grouped into units for “Declassified Information” which
consisted of three 45 minute rotating sessions of amazing real life experiences
that the students wouldn’t experience in the classroom.
First up was Carole B. Steadham, SDA/C, Hon. AIA, President of Placement
By Design [PBD], a Placement Consulting Recruiting firm. She shared her
expertise with new ideas for résumés and portfolios and tips on learning how
to “Market Yourself”.
Next up was Kelley Barnett, ASID, current Texas Chapter President to talk
about “Harnessing the Power of the Intangible”. Kelley discussed how being
part of ASID not only opens doors but creates life-long relationships that
benefit you personally and professionally. She shared two volunteer projects
that she has recently been involved in to show students the powerful benefits
of doing pro-bono work. Her most recent endeavor has been helping an 18year
old high school senior who was paralyzed from the neck down in a
tragic road rage incident. Kelley has rallied fellow industry partners to reconfigure
his home to make it accessible for his new physical needs.
Last up was Lisa Barron, Allied Member ASID of Dallas Design Group
Interiors and Rick Smotherman, Managing Partner of Precision Delivery
Services, to talk about “Project Installations: The Good, The Bad & The
Ugly”. They entertained and shocked the students with true life stories
about what really takes place behind the scenes to get all the furniture,
furnishings, equipment, art and accessories fully installed.
INTERIOR DESIGN BOOT CAMP
Next stop for the day was the “Tour of Duty” where students and practitioners
explored the largest urban arts district in the United States on a
walking architectural tour of the Dallas Arts District.
After the tour, the students were hosted and fed during “Chow Time” at the
Renaissance Collection. BuyLEDs presented new insights to the lighting
world in LEDs: Innovations & Applications. Students then worked their way
through the “Obstacle Course” of showrooms in and around the Decorative
Center Dallas exploring and learning various topics on how to work with
the showrooms. The “Active Duty” presentation by Charrisse Johnston,
ASID, LEED AP, Assoc. AIA was then hosted by Poggenpohl. Charrisse
entertained the troops by sharing her journey, experiences, and ever evolving
life that led to her current position in the design world at Gensler and how
the doors that have been opened to her through her involvement with ASID.
Last up on Friday was a little “R&R” Cocktail Party hosted by Mody & Mody.
“Basic Training” Speed Charette Winners . Group 2: Whitney Hendrickson –
El Centro College; Brooke McKinney – Texas State University; Lane Taylor –
Stephen F. Austin State University; Hsin Jou Hsiao – Stephen F. Austin State
University; Cristi Peterson – Texas State University; Marian Powell – Wade
College; Christine Clark – Baylor University
All events Saturday took place at Wilson Office Interiors and began with
”C-Rations” breakfast sponsored by Sherwin-Williams. The “Basic
Training” Speed Charette sponsored by: BuyLEDs started the morning off in
full swing. Students were divided into twelve teams and paired with students
from different schools. They designed on the fly just like in real life and
created amazing conceptual designs.
“Mess Hall” time was a round table luncheon sponsored by Kravet where
practitioners shared their knowledge and experience with the students
during informal discussions.
After lunch, the “USO Show” panel of practitioners consisting of John Phifer
Marrs, RID, ASID; Derek Alan Vanlandingham; Jason Buckner, RID, IIDA;
and Elizabeth Stanfield, RID, ASID was sponsored by Walker Zanger. The
entertaining panel consisted of emerging interior designers and some of their
mentors. In true USO fashion, they entertained the troops while passing on
words of wisdom about the industry the students are entering into.
Saturday culminated with the awards ceremony, where the following
talented student winners were announced:

Across the Lone Star State
Austin Design Community
By Jennifer Burggraaf, ASID, Chair
■ Austin has finally broken into fall and we are starting to escape the heat
of the last summer. To celebrate we are gearing up with several Fall ASID
events as well as welcoming a new design community board. We have
many returning faces but some familiar ones as well.
Chair: Jill Williams
Chair Elect: Michelle Thomas
Financial Chair: Lori Anderson
Membership Chair: Kim Bates
Programs Chair: Luis Angulo and Michele Christianson
IP Liaison: Dawn Hearn and Holly Hillis
Communications Chair: Karla Urbina
Student Liaison: Angelica Brem
Secretary: Shellee Anderson
■ Thank you Jennifer Burggraaf for all of your hard work over the last several
years on our board and most recently as our Design Community’s chair. We
wish you the best of luck and look forward to meeting the newest member of
your family that is due to arrive in October.
■ Our first ASID homes tour will be help on Saturday October 15th in conjunction
with AIA Austin’s Austin x design celebration. We will feature four
houses that were designed by four of our community’s designers, Panache
Interiors, Laura Britt Design, Bulhon Design Associates and Spaces Designed.
We are very excited for this new event and want to thank each designer for
all their hard work and commitment to making this event a success.
■ On November 4th we will hold our 26th annual Design Excellence ceremony.
Our planning committee has been working extra hard this year to plan
this event. We have had a great turn out of support from our sponsors and
want to thank them for all of their help. Everyone is more than welcome to
come to our event please visit the ASID Texas website for ticket sales. We
look forward to seeing you all there.
■ “Tour de Internationale” was the theme of our September Membership
Drive which included a wonderful progressive dinner hosted by: Design Guide,
Tufenkian Artisan Carpets, Carlin & Company, Elegant Additions, and
Innovations and The Bright Group. With perfectly paired food and wine, and
the evident attention to detail, the evening seemed flawless.
October hosted our Annual Fundraiser Auction, co-sponsored with D
Home and was held at The Kitchen Source. The raffle and silent auction
proceeds went to benefit two wonderful local organizations: Hope’s Door,
a shelter and counseling center that offers comprehensive programs and
services that help break the cycle of domestic abuse, and The Creative Arts
Center of Dallas, a non-profit arts organization offering art outreach
programs to DFW area schools and job training programs. The event
would not have been such a success without the generous donations from
our Industry Partners:
Bentwood of Dallas, Levantina Cantoni, McGannon Showrooms,
Capitol Distributing, New Life Hardwoods, Dallas Market Center, Robert-
Lawrence Designs, Dallas Rugs, RSVP Design Services, Dallas Sight &
■ As always we thank all our members for their continued support of ASID.
We could not do it without you.
■ When an email went out to the ASID Dallas Design Community members
asking for volunteers to help enhance the cafeteria for Casa View
Elementary School, a group of dedicated members responded quickly with
creative ideas to make the cafeteria a beautiful, functional place for all the
students to enjoy in years to come.
Yakeesha Wiliams, teacher and project leader from Casa View Elementary
School, was extremely happy with the results and grateful for the volunteer
effort of ASID members: “This could not be made possible without the
hard work and vision from the design professionals who participated.
They were instrumental in coming up with a vision and making it happen.”
We want to recognize and thank each one of our dedicated volunteers in
making this project a great success.
Dawn Cleaves: Initially volunteering to create a mural, Dawn was there
every day with her supplies guiding and working on the project. She
managed the whole thing, ordering the paint, working with the district
personnel, and assisting in getting volunteers and so much more. I really
could not have done this without her.
Dawn Cleaves, Artisan Finishes LLC, ASID Industry Partner
Julie Mandrell: Instrumental in helping to get the ball rolling, Julie worked
with Sherwin Williams to procure paint, worked with Sonja Quintero on
designing schemes, was the person I communicated with on the project.
Julie was very knowledgeable about community resources and got things
done.
10 of our members did attend MetroCon in August. As always it was very
informative and fun. Thank you to the MetroCon committee and ASID leadership
for holding such a meaningful event.
■ Our September meeting was hosted by Ferguson Enterprises and Rocky
Mountain Hardware. The topic of the CEPH was “Bronze Architectural
Hardware: A Sustainable Design Option”. The class gave the basic on the
formation and construction of bronze used in hardware and the life process
of the material. How it changes over time and that it is a living material
with every piece handcrafted. We want to thank our local IP representatives
of Ferguson’s for hosting the event and luncheon.
plans. Thanks to our generous
Premium Sponsors, we have venues
for almost the whole year. We also
discussed how much fun we all had
September Meeting
■ Our September 20th meeting was at Emser Tile. Lucinda Ruch and Diana
Gats of The Alternative Board led a seminar on social networking – specifically
LinkedIn. There is so much to learn regarding social networking, yet it
is hard to find time to learn it all! Thanks to Emser Tile and Tom Alford of
H.B Fuller for a yummy fajita dinner. Outgoing Chair, Robin Burrill, ASID,
gave out plaques to her board members, as well as the new ASID pins to all
members. We also had a drawing for prizes from a list of designers who signed
up for Real World Design Week, ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬persons who referred new members,
and all those in attendance. We adopted the idea of participation drawings
to encourage more members to attend. Wendy Bohaman, ASID won an art
glass piece from Vetro Glass and a Kimball Museum membership. Jennifer
Mitchel and Kathryn Thomkins each won a class with The Alternative Board.
A big thank you to Living Order, Premiere Interface Technologies, Halltek
have made this event as great as it was! I am already looking forward to doing
