METROCON07: EXPO & CONFERENCE
New Location, Fresh Ideas, Expanded Opportunities
By Laura McDonald, ASID | IIDA
Mark your calendars now for Thursday, August 16
& Friday, August 17 because you absolutely do not
want to miss the 2007 version of METROCON – the
largest design-related regional expo and conference
in the USA. With months of planning already under
its belt, the METROCON07 Committee is dedicated
to making this year’s event even more valuable to
members, whether attending or exhibiting.
First to tell you about: METROCON07 has new
home. The show is moving across Market Center
Boulevard to Dallas Market Hall
[2200 Stemmons Freeway], a venue
that offers better parking (almost
3000 spaces for both exhibitors
and attendees) and easier movein
for exhibitors. This 214,000
square foot consumer exhibit hall
houses temporary exhibit space
during market weeks and hosts 60
2200
consumer shows and exhibits annually,
attracting more than 400,000
patrons a year.
With limitless opportunities,
METROCON is the premier trade show to attend in
2007. Network among members of your professional
industry and receive amazingly affordable continuing
education. With up to 400 booths of 250 A&D
industry related vendors featuring hundreds of new
products, you can maximize your networking and
education experience while seeing the latest developments
and trends the industry has to offer.
Leading this year’s ground-breaking volunteer
alliance between the Texas Chapter of ASID, the Texas
/ Oklahoma Chapter of IIDA [International Interior
Design Association], the DFW Chapter of IFMA
[International Facility Management Association] is
presiding co-chair, ASID Texas’ Professional Development
Director / Interior Designer / Founder of
PlinthAndChintz.com and Chic Geeks, Laura McDonald,
ASID / IIDA. The additional co-chairs rounding out
the METROCON07 executive committee are Senior
DALLAS MARKET HALL
A&D Specialist of Milliken Carpet, Karen Gaither
Harrell, IIDA (representing IIDA), and President of
ReSource Flooring Group / Finance Chair of IFMA
DFW Chapter, Burt Copeland (representing IFMA).
Besides the co-chairs mentioned above, each of
the sponsor organizations has three active, voting
representatives. Under the established METROCON
committee structure, these nine additional members
will each chair a specific subcommittee. We are
thrilled to announce that the three ASID representatives
sitting on the METROCON07 committee
are: Linda Steinberg, ASID as
Volunteer Chair; Robin Rucker,
ASID / IIDA as Registration Chair;
7 and Pat Gallagher, ASID Texas
Administrator as Finance Chair.
16-17, 2007
For developing details
about METROCON07, visit
www.metrocon.info. The site will
be updated throughout the coming
months with information regarding
both attendee and exhibitor registration
pricing and schedules (look
for improvements to the online
registration process too), continuing education
offerings, new and improved sponsorship opportunities,
the opening date of exhibitor registration
etc. In the meantime, visit the Press page of the
website for links to view photos from 2006’s show.
Come August, we hope to see your face in one of
those pictures.
This marks the fifth year for METROCON and the
third year of involvement for the ASID Texas Chapter.
The Legacy of Design Awards Celebration will again
be held in conjunction with METROCON, replacing
the past traditional September Annual Meeting.
Between the two events, ASID Texas will offer its
members affordable, quality continuing education,
create an atmosphere for networking and socializing,
and celebrate its members’ achievements, while
thanking them for their support. You won’t want to
miss it, so definitely plan to be there.

A Letter from the President . . .
Dear Fellow Members,
Unbelievable as it may seem but another year is upon us. I know for me 2007 has started with on
a high note but also with the loss of a colleague of 25 years. It has caused me to take a look at my
career, where I am, and where I am going. We are at an interesting crossroads in our profession.
It seems everyone is aware of interior design – the consumer is inundated with information via
television and print media. In my 35 years practicing in this business I have never witnessed such
an interest by the consumer in our practice of design.
Due to all of this attention it has never been a better time to be part of this profession and to be a
member of ASID. At our recent El Paso Design Community meeting the chair, Sally Dinsmoor,
pointed out several reasons as to what it meant to her to be a member. Many of her points were a
reminder to me of why I became a member – interaction with fellow designers, great CEPH’s offerings, MetroCon and Legacy of Design,
more information on current subjects than one could ever use, and assistance with the STEP classes to prepare for the NCIDQ to name
a few. She closed with “Had I known how great ASID was I would have joined long ago.” I think many times we forget what is available
right before our eyes; enjoy all of the benefits of ASID.
Of great concern to all of us is the protection of our profession, we studied and worked hard to get to this stage and we understand the
importance of being licensed. To protect this right the Texas Chapter supports the Practice Act currently being proposed to the Texas
Legislature. In October I attended the ASID Legislative Symposium to learn about how to work with the Legislature and used this information
on January 29th for Legislative Day in Austin where, in tandem with the Gulf Coast Chapter, Student Chapters, and TAID, we lobbied
the Legislature to support our bill. My group of three Texas Tech students and four professional members visited thirteen State Representatives
and four Senators. We were warmly received by both the staff and the legislators themselves, many interrupting meetings to talk with us.
It was amazing to me how aware the legislator’s were on our issue, this is a testament to the work done by those who had preceded us
in two previous attempts of passage of the Practice Act. Questions that we answered dealt mainly with what is difference between a
designer and a decorator, why a Practice Act was needed and how it differed from the Title Act.
We ended the day with a cocktail reception for the legislators and staff where we were able to connect on an even more personal basis.
In all it was a very successful day for the over 100 energized attendees. The bill is currently being written and we do not know the outcome
of Legislative Day as it affects our bill’s passage but we do know we will succeed, if not this session then the next. .
The basis of the Practice Act is to ensure your right to practice. This will protect the profession by allowing only individuals who have
the education, experience and examination, to practice Interior Design in “code regulated spaces”. The Practice Act will also allow the
Texas Board of Architectural Examiners to enforce the rules regulating the Interior Design practice. As the bill progresses thru the Legislature
we will continue to update you via the newsletter and email.
As I am writing this article we have learned of the death of Irving Schwartz, FASID a beloved life time member of ASID. When the
campaign began for a Title Act it was Irving’s words that convinced me this was what our industry needed in order to be considered a
profession in the ranks of other professions. I was not fortunate to know him on a personal basis but I do know he will be missed by all
of us whose future in Interior Design has been made possible by his efforts. Thank you Irving.
In addition to following the progress of the Practice Act the Texas Chapter is working on the update of our consumer focused website –
texas-designer.com and the planning for MetroCon and the Legacy of Design award ceremony for August. A lot is happening throughout
the state so stay involved with your Community and join the fun.
Sincerely,
Fran Timbrook, ASID
Greetings from the President-elect . . .
Dear Friends,
What an exciting time I have ahead of me! Serving my fellow designers in this ever
changing field makes the word “exciting” seem small. I am thankful I took the opportunity to work side by side with dedicated ASID
members and experience first hand the continual evolution of the Texas Chapter.
We are on our way!! We will continue to meet the expectations of our industry by obtaining the Interior Design Practice Act, using current
technology and attending classes of continuing education at Metrocon ‘ 07. Wow, I think this is beginning to sound like a commercial…
but these are the tools needed to support and strengthen you in your practice.
One of the most important tools we have as colleagues is to participate in the Texas Chapter Strategic Plan. This survey is the starting
point each year in forming the road map to gain the most from your association with ASID.
Your input into this plan is what will continue the forward drive of professionalism through the Interior Design Practice Act. This format
allows us to present you with the most current technologies benefiting your practice.
If you want me to be the most effective I can be for further growth I have got to hear from you. We have attached the current survey in
this newsletter for your convenience. If you have not already completed the survey, the opportunity for the future awaits you. When
complete, fax it to the Chapter office at 214-651-9309.
Your fellow member,
Legacy of Design
Don’t Miss Your Opportunity to Shine Bright within the State of Texas and Beyond
By Laura McDonald, ASID | IIDA
Details regarding the 2007 Legacy of Design Awards, the annual competition
recognizing the finest interior design achievements within the Texas
Chapter, were announced Friday, February 16th via an email blast to all
designer members. Comprehensive information is also available on the Legacy
of Design page on the ASID Texas website [www.asidtx.org].
Winners will be honored at the Legacy of Design Awards Party, will again
be held in conjunction with METROCON Expo & Conference. This year’s
event will be held on Friday, August 17, 2007 from 6 pm – 9 pm. (Location
TBD at the time of this writing.)
Winners’ names, including select
photographs, will be listed on
the public-accessible portion
of the ASID Texas website
throughout the 2007-2008 ASID
calendar year, and a press release
highlighting the roster of winning
designers will be sent out to a
variety of local, regional, and
national publications.
The Board is pleased to
announce the awards’ new media
sponsor, LUXE, Texas’ largest
design and architecture magazine
[www.luxemagazine.com]. They have Texas covered” with one statewide
edition and three regional editions, including LUXE Dallas/Ft. Worth, LUXE
Austin/San Antonio, and LUXE Houston.
LUXE will designate at least one half-page per winner in a special section
within the Fall 2007 issue, which will arrive on newsstands September 2007.
This Legacy section will appear in three publications: the Dallas/Ft. Worth
edition, the Austin/San Antonio edition, and the Texas statewide edition,
which lands on newsstands in outlets such as Barnes & Noble, Borders, CVS,
Whole Foods, Brookshire’s, Tom Thumb, Randalls, Kroger, HEB, Hastings, as
well as airports across the state. In addition to the large- and medium-sized
metropolitan outlets, newsstand distribution will include, but is not limited
to, smaller municipalities such as Allen, Arlington, Baytown, Bellaire, Channelview,
Colleyville, Commerce, Conroe, Coppell, Flower Mound, Frisco, Galena Park,
Greenville, Humble, Irving, Katy, Leander, Lulling, McKinney, Midland,
Montgomery, Pasadena, Plano, Quinlan, Richmond, Roanoke, Rockwall,
Seabrook, Southlake, Spicewood, Spring, Sugar Land, and Tomball.
In an effort to encourage even more entries, ASID Texas is offering an array
of categories, taking care to accommodate a wide range of projects from
across the state. To alleviate feelings of intimidation, the Chapter is continuing
on with the popular RISING STARS division. These categories are open
only to designers who have practiced design for 10 years or less. Designers
meeting the RISING STARS eligibility have the choice of entering either section,
as the DESIGN MAVENS categories are open to all Registered Interior Designers
regardless of length of practice.
As to be more accommodating and fiscally responsible to our diverse
membership, ASID Texas is again offering two different methods for obtaining
an entry packet: downloading
and printing .pdf files off of the
www.asidtx.org website or
requesting from the Chapter
Office that an entry packet be
mailed to them. The competition
will be publicized via a
mailer and multiple email blasts
to all designer members, within
some Industry Partner showrooms,
and in the Spring 2007
issue of LUXE. The due date for
submittal binders is 5:00pm
on Friday, May 18, 2007.
The ASID Texas Chapter is full of amazingly innovative, cleverly creative
designers just bursting with talent. From hospitality to healthcare, retail to
residential, our dynamic group serves its clients well and deserves to be noticed.
We hope that members use Legacy of Design as a marketing tool, an ego booster,
or both – as long as they take advantage of this marvelous opportunity not
only to reach potential clients in their areas, but from around the state.
Industry Partners, per your request we have created exclusive
sponsorship levels for Legacy of Design 2007. If you miss out on METROCON07
sponsorships, then a Legacy of Design sponsorship is for you. It will still allow
you to get your company name out there and focus directly on our dynamic
membership of specifiers and buyers. Please visit the Legacy page of
www.asidtx.org or contact Professional Development Director, Laura
McDonald to find out how.
Your best bet? Stay tuned to the Legacy of Design page on www.asidtx.org
for updated information on the event, including how to purchase tickets,
which will remain reasonably priced. You won’t want to miss the party of the
year, so plan on joining your fellow Texas Chapter members – and maybe a
few surprise guests from ASID National – to Reward, Reunite, and Rejuvenate!

I am a committed member who cares about our profession as well as our
organization. I understand communication must be improved between
Professional members, Educators, Sponsors and Students. The Texas Chapter
has been hailed by National as one of the most effective chapters in the
nation. Our chapter is at a crossroads, because of changes made on the
National level as well as State requirements we must aggressively communicate
with everyone associated to our membership. We stand to loose touch
with our members due to intimidation based on wrong information or lack
of information. With new technology available today and a grassroots approach
of small groups we could unify and strengthen our age defining gap. A wealth
of knowledge and social interaction can implement change by persuading
the adventurous to communicate with the apprehensive.

Life Events Trigger Home Updates and Remodel Projects
Key findings of the largest, most comprehensive study ever conducted of
baby boomers and mature customers show that a majority of those 50 and
older want to stay in their current homes for the foreseeable future and
plan improvements or a remodel during that time. Life events common to the
50-plus population – retirement, the birth of a grandchild, caring for an elderly
parent, an adult child moving home – often are triggers for projects to improve
home comfort and functionality in anticipation of spending more time at
home enjoying hobbies and entertaining friends and family. Conducted by
Focalyst, the study gathered data from more than 30,000 consumers from
the baby boom generation and older. The Home Depot®, the world's largest
home improvement retailer, sponsored the study to gain insight into the
housing preferences and home improvement needs among this audience of
more than 125 million Americans. “This is a dynamic consumer group with
a wide range of interests and needs, and we want to enable them to make the
most of their home regardless of life stage,” said Roger Adams, CMO and
senior vice president of Marketing for The Home Depot. “When our boomer
and 50-plus customers plan home improvement projects, we offer the
products, services and know-how they need to create an intergenerational
living space that welcomes family members of all ages and abilities.” Key
home improvement findings for consumers 50 and older include the following:
plan to live in current home during the next five years
American Society of Interior Designers
• 60 percent expect to live in their current residence during the next five
years.
• 65 percent plan to remodel or improve their homes.
• 42 percent of all home improvement projects will be done by outside
contractors.
• 77 percent believe how their home looks is an important part of who they
are.
• 73 percent say the kitchen is the most important room for them.
Homeowners of any age can benefit by incorporating innovative designs
into their home improvement plans, creating not only a stylish environment
reflective of how they live today, but also a safe and comfortable home for
years to come. Following are home modification suggestions for two key areas
of any home, the kitchen and bath:
In the kitchen
• Under-cabinet task lighting brightens countertops, lessening eyestrain.
• Pull-down shelving removes effort from pantry access.
• Slide-out drawers eliminate the need to twist or bend to access pots
its exhibit at Life@50+ AARP's National Event & Expo which took place Oct.
26–28 in Anaheim, Calif. The exhibit is a house that incorporates intergenerational
design concepts, and products and services relevant to 50-plusyear-old
consumers, all of which are available from The Home Depot, Home
Letter from the TAID President
Dear Members,
With the beginning of my term as president
of TAID we are also seeing the convening
of the 80th Texas Legislature. During this
session TAID will again be submitting the
bill for an Interior Design Practice Act. As
always, we have high hopes for success, but
the support of interior designers from all
across Texas makes the passing of the Practice
Act much closer to a reality.
22
American Society of Interior Designers
News from TAID
ASID and IIDA interior designers are
working together to educate our state legislators
on how interior designers’ decisions
can affect the life safety of the public. On
January 30th many of these interior designers
gathered at the Capitol to visit each state
representative’s and state senator’s office, asking for their support of our Practice Act. The Governor signed a proclamation, declaring January 30th as
Interior Design Legislative Day in Texas. That same evening, TAID hosted a reception for the entire state legislature at the Driskill Hotel, a historical hotel within
walking distance of the Capitol.
If you were not able to make it to Austin for Interior Design Legislative Day, you can still help with getting our bill passed. You can write a letter, and send
by mail or fax, to your representative and your senator asking for their support. We want them to know that an interior designer makes decisions that affect
the health, safety, and welfare of the public. We would like our bill passed so that code regulated spaces can be designed by only licensed interior designers,
who are required to have an accredited education, an exam, and work experience. We could also assure the legislators that our bill exempts architects.
As I am writing this, our bill for a Practice Act has not been filed with the 80th State Legislature. That means at this point we do not have a bill number that
I can give you to refer to when you write your legislator. Please check the TAID website, www.supporttaid.org, because as soon as we have a bill number, it
will be posted on our site. If you are unsure who your representative and senator are you can go to www.capitol.state.tx.us, and under “who represents me”
you can give your address to find your legislators.
With all of us working together we can insure a secure future for interior design, raising the quality of our profession.
In Memorium
Irving D.Schwartz, FASID passed away on Feb 1st after a brief fight
with cancer. Irv was National Treasurer in 1976 and National President
1978 of ASID and served on numerous boards and committees nationally,
state wide, and locally. He is one of the founders of NCIDQ and also
a past-president of TAID. Irv was an Architect and Interior Designer. He
believed strongly that the professions should work closely hand in hand.
That is the philosophy that helped create his firm IDS/B inc. Irv is survived
by his loving wife Jeannine Bazer, FASD.
Services were held at:
Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home
7405 W. Northwest Highway Dallas, Texas 75225
Irving was very dedicated to the Dallas Wind Symphony which is
why the Dallas Design community has taken on the remodel of their offices
as our project this year. One thing we could not afford to do was build
them a music library. Irv and Jeannine have asked that in lieu of flowers
donations be made for creation of this music library.
Please send any donations to
The Dallas Wind Symphony
Well, the New Year is all about making and, hopefully, keeping resolutions
and the Austin Design Community board has made a short, but
significant list of their own.
Resolution One: We would like to increase membership attendance
to the monthly meetings. We hope to accomplish this by engaging
interesting speakers who can provide valuable information and insight
cont. on page 29
into our design profession and industry and also to the business of running
a successful practice.
Resolution Two: We would like to increase member participation in
our annual Design Excellence competition. One step to accomplish this
is to offer as a door prize, one free competition entry at each monthly
meeting this year. Another step is to devote large amounts of meeting
time to clear and thorough explanations and strategy analysis of successfully
entering and completing the Design Excellence competition requirements.
Resolution Three: We would like to become more involved with our
Industry Partners. We have added Paul Davison, of David Alan Rugs,
as an Industry Partner Liaison to our board. He will be responsible for
ideas and plans allowing our Industry Partners easy access to our Austin
Design Community. We will continue to invite our Industry Partners to
all of our ASID events.
Chelsea Bandy, our Student Liaison Chair, is busy gearing up for the
2007 Interior Design Mentor program for the Austin area. This wonderful
annual program allows design students the opportunity to experience
the profession of Interior Design by meeting with an ASID design professional
at least three times during the school semester. Students and
mentors use a suggested activity outline designed to give the student an
overview into the business side of the design world. Student orientations
was hosted by ASID the week of February 13th in order to familiarize
the student with their prospective mentor’s firm. This program has
proven to be so popular, that in 2006, both the students and the mentors
requested time together in addition to the required three meetings.
Maria Aponte has flawlessly executed our monthly evites and announcements
to our membership. Karen Javier has held up to her role of Financial
Chair even as the due date of her twin babies looms closer and closer.
Our spring calendar is filling up with exciting events thanks to Amanda
Hill, Programs Chair. In February our meeting will be held at Seasonal
Living Trading Company. In March we will host a meeting on “Winning
Strategies for Competing in Design Excellence”. In April we will meet
at Dal-tile.
Sponsors continue to show an interest in our programs, new members
continue to join the Austin Design Community chapter and one resolution
was met in January with a record monthly meeting attendance.
The November 14th meeting was hosted by Elegant Additions, IP
at the new International Center. The presentation was on the “Spirit of
Water” and creating the Spa atmosphere in today’s bath. How wellness,
ritual, function and beauty are incorporated into the bath retreat at home,
as well as some new technologies were presented to us by the President
of US Dornbracht, Jon Spector. It was a lovely event and many thanks
go to Julie Koch, the owner of Elegant Additions and to Landon Smith,
Showroom manager. Also to all the staff that help to create such a nice
meeting. A certificate of appreciation went to Elegant Additions as well
as to Dallas Home Design. DHD has very generously donated a year of
full page advertisements that explain what an ASID designer is and the
importance of hiring one.
Public education is a number one priority in our quest to be widely
recognized as the professionals that we are.
December 12th was our Annual Holiday Party, which was an extremely
successful and elegant party, hosted so graciously by the McGannon
Showroom. We raised a record amount of money with ticket and raffle
sales. This year the money we raised will go towards our Community
Service project. The project this year is the remodel of the office of The
Dallas Wind Symphony.
Their office is in one of the historic building in Fair Park. The Dallas
Wind Symphony is a non profit organization that spends much of their
time bringing music to young people and those who are disadvantaged.
They give so much to the community that we wanted to do some thing
nice for them. This project is being headed by Jeannine Bazer. We were
honored as well at the holiday party to have the Tuba Quartet from the
Wind Symphony come and perform for us. Truly a memorable evening
and a huge Thank you to McGannons for the incredible job they did
putting this party together for us. Thanks to Dallas Sight and Sound for
again providing sound equipment for the evening.
And the whole event would not have been successful had it not been
for the extremely generous people who made donations for our raffle.
Many, many thanks to:
Design District Draperies, Fiber-Seal, The Dallas Wind Symphony,
Tommye Pitts Baker, The Patricia Group, Capel Rugs, Arizona Tile,
January 9th, 2007 was our meeting at Robert Allen/ Beacon Hill,
IP. It had been a while since we had a lunch meeting and Robert Allen/Beacon
Hill put out a nice and delicious spread for us. The show room was beautiful
and our turn out was incredible with over 100 attending. The guest
speaker was Angela Merola. Ms. Merola facilitates Career/Life Coaching
workshops to groups and individuals. Her special presentation was titled
“How to Custom Design Better Client Relationships”. Her focus was on
setting expectations for the design process by creating boundaries, solutions
for handling difficult situations and how to take clients on the
El Paso Design Community
By Sally Dinsmoor, ASID
The El Paso Design Community has had a busy and rewarding year
thus far. Because I missed the last deadline (sorry, new kid on the block),
I would like bring you all up to date from September 2006 when we met
at Highpoint Enterprises in El Paso for a lunch meeting.
For 30 years Highpoint Enterprises has been in the business of supplying
clients and designers with just about everything they need to design
the interior of a house.
Highpoint supplies flooring, wood and natural stone, custom cabinets
for kitchens and bathroom vanities, and fixtures (including whirlpools,
faucets, ventilation fans, skylights, glass enclosures, flooring heating
systems, saunas and steam generators). Highpoint also offers a full selection
of counter tops (including: granite, marble, glass, concrete or butcher
block). They can supply you and your client with closet organizers and
all major appliances. As described by our past chair, Shelley Saab, Highpoint
is “A small hidden jewel box”.
In October we were fortunate to have a wonderful CEU meeting and
lunch hosted by manufacturers representative Pat Gerry Wilson and
BPSI, our local Herman Miller Dealership. Maryann McConnell of Crypton
Fabrics presented the class. Her power point presentation gave us more
then a few laughs! We received useful crypton cleaning demonstration
kits. Ann Perez was the lucky winner of a Crypton designer portfolio bag.
It does pay to make it to your monthly ASID meetings!
What a fantastic and informative meeting we had on November 8 with
Kathleen Powers of Mechoshade International. Kathleen treated us
to a delicious lunch and CEU class with the local AIA group. Kathleen is
busy signing up 2 or 3 window treatment dealers to be certified with their
product in El Paso. Mechoshade can not be bought directly, and we must
go through a certified dealer for product and installation.
I am sure that all those who attended this meeting obtained valuable
information about solar blinds.
Kathleen spoke of how designers love to specify white solar blinds.
She said designers specify them a lot because their appearance is clean
and architectural. However, the color white intensifies sunlight when it
hits the shade, and this can be very disturbing to a client’s work environment.
The bright light bounces off work surfaces and interferes with
computer screens. Some offices have actually had to tape large sheets
of brown paper to their windows to avoid the glare from the sun.
Kathleen told us that while all solar shades deflect heat, only the darker
colors keep down the intensity of the light, no matter what the opacity
of the weave. If a client complains about the white shades, the manufacturer
can either retrofit a Mylar screen or install a blackout shade behind
the original white shade to fix the problem.
But the best solution, according to Kathleen, is to specify the right
shade at the beginning of the job-- stick with grays, blacks, or browns,
the darker the color the better.
You can reach Kathleen Powers at her cell number 480-231-7417 or
Email her at kathleenp@mechoshade.com
On November 30th, we were invited to the Dal-tile Grand Reopening
with the local AIA group. We had a wonderful evening. We shared great
food and drink, had a quick stone installation presentation given by
Laticrete. We walked away from the meeting with Laticrete grout samples
and lots of literature. I don’t know about you but I personally loved their
glow-in-the-dark grout and their glitter grout that works great with
glass tile. I laugh when I think about us all huddling in the darkened
restroom to get a good look at that glow-in-the-dark product!
Our combined ASID El Paso Design Community Christmas Party/December
meeting was held on Monday evening, December 11th, at Charlotte’s
Fine Furniture Showroom. Fran Timbrook hosted the event in which
we enjoyed great food and company.
32
American Society of Interior Designers
We were invited to do some Christmas shopping in the Charlottes
gift shop before hand and those who did not shop, were busy eating
and filling out a survey that Sally Dinsmoor created to gather information
from our local members to assist us in determining how we can
improve our local design community.
Also in December, Fran Timbrook and Sally Dinsmoor met over lunch
with the design department head at El Paso Community College; Maria
Prospero. Maria is busy aligning our local school with the current issue
of moving design graduates into a four year interior design program at
one of our fine Universities here in Texas.
January’s meeting and membership drive was held at Art Masters
on January 11, 2007.
Our host was Doug Anthony, the gallery and custom framing owner
of Art Masters. Doug opened his business in El Paso 10 years ago after
seeing a need in El Paso for quality framed artwork and custom framing
services at an affordable price with great service.
Doug and his employee Blythe Burkhart explained to us the latest
trends and technology in picture framing, including how computerized
framing can be an advantage to designers and their clients. Doug and
Blythe covered conservation framing-- including the advantages and
disadvantages of conservation framing, when to use conservation framing,
the latest and greatest installation tricks for framed art work, and much
more. We had a lot of great questions for Doug and his staff -- and we
learned quit a bit.
Not only did Doug provide some of El Paso’s best Mexican food, but he
had a drawing for three door prizes which consisted of signed and limited
edition prints. Our winners were Shelley Saab, Maggie Adame- Alvidrez,
and guest Gabriela Villalobos. Again, attend your meetings to be eligible
for some great prizes.
Twelve members and sixteen guests (hopefully soon to be members)
attended this membership drive.
February’s meeting was held at Annie Mo’s Decorator Warehouse
on Thursday evening February 15, 2007 at 5:30 PM. Annie lectured us
on “What’s hot and what’s not in the floral industry today.” We are
lucky to have such a talented woman as Annie and her business here in
El Paso.
We are looking forward to our March 6th meeting, when Johnsonite
Commercial Flooring will host a CEU luncheon for us, “Life Saving
Design.” This class is aimed at enhancing public safety and welfare through
the integration of design and advanced egress-routing systems.
We offer a special thank you to Nicole Ferrini for the spectacular on
line newsletter that she sends out each month. Each month’s graphics
are different and delightful. Those who miss a meeting can catch up easily
and effectively. We truly appreciate her hard work.
We also congratulate Andrea Ross from Facilities Connection (our
local Haworth Dealership) for successfully passing the NCIDQ last fall.
We give her high kudos and know that she is an inspiration to others in
El Paso, who are studying diligently to take the exam.
Happy New Year to each and every one of you from the El Paso Design
Community!!!
Lubbock Design Community
By Allison Lee, Allied Member ASID, Chair
In December, the Lubbock ASID Community teamed up with the IIDA
Lubbock City Center for a great Holiday Event and Christmas party.
Members from both organizations were treated to wonderful food, holiday
cheer and great door prizes donated by several local area businesses.
Members also participated in a lively “Christmas Sweater Contest”, where
prizes were awarded for the most original, most creative and ugliest
sweaters. We hope to plan even more joint functions with the local IIDA
City Center in the future, to foster friendships, continue networking and
enjoy camaraderie with our peers.
The Lubbock Community did not hold a January meeting, as everyone
was busy recuperating and catching up from the holidays. February, March
and April meeting plans are in the works, and promise to be insightful,
educational and entertaining!
The November meeting was held at Allen and Allen, a hardware and
plumbing showroom.
Robbie Jalnos, a master plumber, and owner of Steve's Plumbing,
spoke for an hour and a half on ADA compliance in plumbing for both
residential and commercial applications. This is the barrier free CEPH
that is part of the eight hours of TBAE's requirements in order to be
compliant in keeping our licenses as Interior Designers. We all felt that
we had gone to ADA 101 and beyond, and will apply the information in
our bathroom interiors.
Allen and Allen furnished lunch, and included us in their 75 year celebration
of being in business in San Antonio. We are most grateful to both
Mr. Jalnos, and to Allen and Allen.
December found us all celebrating with a Christmas Party hosted by
Art Inc. a showroom specializing framing of art, and serves as an art
source for both residential and commercial interiors. The food and libations
were wonderful and a good time was had by all. Many thanks to the
Grothues family owners of Art Inc.
At the Christmas party a large number of toys were collected for the
Children's Shelter in San Antonio. The next day these were delivered to
the grateful staff. It would seem that since Katrina the quantity of toys
had dwindled. For value of each toy, United Way matches in-kind, the
supplies so needed for the children who are brought into this safe place.
A letter of appreciation was sent from Katherine W. Hollimon, the Vice
President of Community Relations to the Texas Chapter. To quote from
this: "Over 100 years ago, a vision was founded on hope. Hope that we
can make a difference in the lives of children - each life touched uniquely
by the care and involvment of our supporters. Through your in-kind gift
of toys, you help us provide the essential necessities of childhood, inspiring
many happy memories."
After a poignant description of a staff member assisting a toddler with
an "abusive and neglectful past" to walk, the letter goes to say that
"The secure surroundings in which our children grow to trust are made
possible by your generosity. We wholeheartedly thank you, on behalf
of our staff and most importantly, on behalf of our first-time walkers."
Thank you to all who brought toys for these children. Such a little thing
that means so much.
There was no meeting in January as everyone is encouraged to meet
in Austin for the Legislative Days the 29th and 30th. This is the year of
the Legislative session and we are going for the Practice Act in Texas.
National ASID has sent 35K towards this effort. With the successful
passage of this legislation, only registered interior designers will be able
to do interiors in those commercial spaces governed by code.
February's meeting will be held at noon on the 27th of February at
Summer Classics, a new Industry Partner showroom, 2600 Broadway.
Lunch will be provided.
The March meeting will be held at ProSource, 12919 Flagship at noon
for a CEPH and product introduction by the residential Masland rep for
South Texas, Sharon Wilson. Masland is a national Industry Partner.
Lunch will be provided by Pro Source, an Industry Partner.
