Well, the New Year is all about making and, hopefully, keeping resolutions and the Austin Design Community board has made a short, but significant list of their own. Resolution One: We would like to increase membership attendance to the monthly meetings. Resolution Two: We would like to increase member participation in our annual Design Excellence competition. One step to accomplish this is to offer as a door prize, one free competition entry at each monthly meeting this year. Another step is to devote large amounts of meeting time to clear and thorough explanations and strategy analysis of successfully entering and completing the Design Excellence competition requirements. Resolution Three: We would like to become more involved with our Industry Partners. We have added Paul Davison, of David Alan Rugs, as an Industry Partner Liaison to our board. He will be responsible for ideas and plans allowing our Industry Partners easy access to our Austin Design Community. We will continue to invite our Industry Partners to all of our ASID events. Chelsea Bandy, our Student Liaison Chair, is busy gearing up for the 2007 Interior Design Mentor program for the Austin area. This wonderful annual program allows design students the opportunity to experience the profession of Interior Design by meeting with an ASID design professional at least three times during the school semester. Students and mentors use a suggested activity outline designed to give the student an overview into the business side of the design world. Student orientations was hosted by ASID the week of February 13th in order to familiarize the student with their prospective mentor’s firm. This program has proven to be so popular, that in 2006, both the students and the mentors requested time together in addition to the required three meetings. Maria Aponte has flawlessly executed our monthly evites and announcements to our membership. Karen Javier has held up to her role of Financial Chair even as the due date of her twin babies looms closer and closer. Our spring calendar is filling up with exciting events thanks to Amanda Hill, Programs Chair. In February our meeting will be held at Seasonal Living Trading Company. In March we will host a meeting on “Winning Strategies for Competing in Design Excellence”. In April we will meet at Dal-tile. Sponsors continue to show an interest in our programs, new members continue to join the Austin Design Community chapter and one resolution was met in January with a record monthly meeting attendance. Dallas Design Community By Scott Frelick, ASID Chair The November 14th meeting was hosted by Elegant Additions, IP at the new International Center. The presentation was on the “Spirit of Water” and creating the Spa atmosphere in today’s bath. How wellness, ritual, function and beauty are incorporated into the bath retreat at home, as well as some new technologies were presented to us by the President of US Dornbracht, Jon Spector. It was a lovely event and many thanks go to Julie Koch, the owner of Elegant Additions and to Landon Smith, Showroom manager. Also to all the staff that help to create such a nice meeting.
