Spotlight on Volunteers

Dining Room Desk Volunteers:
Loretta and Sam Horton
Sam and Loretta
were born and raised in
Sheridan. After many
moves they came back
to be closer to their son
and grandchildren.
They have been married
58 years after
eloping to a little
church in Hardin when
they were (in their own
words, very, very young

- ages 17 and 15) after
knowing each other less than three months. They have five children,
10 grandchildren and three greats spread throughout the
country. They have been hard workers all their life. Sam worked
rough necking, ranching, as a heavy equipment mechanic and
owned and operated S&L Salvage and Repair for 12 years in the
early 1980’s.
Sam and Loretta Horton share, “We enjoy visiting and that is
why we are here.” Besides helping at the desk on Sundays and
holidays, which are the toughest days to find volunteers, the Hortons
have been carrying trays, helping with beverages, and calling
tables. Loretta also works the reception desk during the SheridanAires
spring and winter shows while Sam can be found helping
in the kitchen. They also assist collating the newsletter and other
mailings.
We thank Sam and Loretta for the wonderful work they are
doing for the Center! ☼

Come by the Center and meet volunteer
Sarah Aksamit. She is helping the Center
out with Marketing and Public Relations
this summer. Sarah recently graduated
from the University of Wyoming with a degree
in Communications and a minor in
marketing. Thank you for your time and
great ideas Sarah!” ☼

Jan Quinn has consistently
been a cheery face at the dining
room desk since December
2009.
“From the time I walked in the
Senior Center doors, I wanted to
a part of this warm and
welcoming place. I have never
left here without someone telling
me thank you for being here,”
Jan shares.
Jan relocated to Sheridan
from Scottsbluff, Nebraska to be
closer to her daughter and
grandchildren and her son and
grandchild in Gillette. She is now
serving as the dining room desk
coordinator and will also assist
in the Family Caregiver Program.
The loss of staff member and
volunteer, Duane Portwood, left
not only an empty space in our
lives but an empty chair at the
dining room desk three days a
week. We would like to take this
opportunity to also thank Jan
who is so vital in this position to
the
operations
of the
Senior
Center. ☼
