<strong>Checklist</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>bryophytes</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong>, <strong>India</strong><br />
Bischler-Causse (1989) included <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong> in <strong>the</strong> distribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter species on <strong>the</strong> basis<br />
<strong>of</strong> at least one Chopra record <strong>of</strong> M. palmata. However, she also remarked that all <strong>the</strong> <strong>India</strong>n<br />
specimens she had seen named as M. palmata - for example, that "those cited in Kashyap<br />
(1929), Chopra (1943) and Singh (1966), belonged to M. papillata subsp. grossibarbara, except<br />
for <strong>the</strong> specimen from <strong>Tamil</strong> <strong>Nadu</strong> drawn by Srinivasan (1939 [1940]), which is <strong>of</strong> M. pappeana<br />
subsp. robusta". Srinivasan commented that "M. palmata" was very common around<br />
Ootacamund. Bischler-Causse (1989) confirmed M. emarginata subsp. emarginata from <strong>the</strong><br />
neighbouring states <strong>of</strong> Karnataka and Kerala.<br />
