of J. purpurata in their revisions of Asian Jungermannia, except as a misidentification (see J.
pfleidereri above). The species is otherwise known only from the Himalayan region.
Solenostoma sphaerocarpum (Hook.) Steph. – Kodaikanal, Foreau, 1934, 2130, as Aplozia
sphaerocarpa [Chopra 1938: 245]. To be clarified: not mentioned from South India in Bapna &
Kachroo (2000a), or in revisions of Asian Jungermannia by Amakawa or Váňa.
Spruceanthus polymorphus (Sande Lac.) Verd. – to be confirmed. Bapna & Kachroo (2000b) cite
two localities: Yercaud (Rao & Udar 1957), which is discounted here because of the inadequate
descripion and illustration which seem to conform more with S. semirepandus, and Kodaikanal,
for which a source reference has not been found.
ANTHOCEROTOPHYTA
Anthoceros macrosporus Steph. – the only record of this species is from Borghat, Khandala,
Maharashtra (Asthana & Srivastvava (1991). Kachroo et al. 1977 (repeated in Bapna & Kachroo
2000a) give a location as 'Borghat, Kodaikanal', but the latter is treated as a error.
BRYOPHYTA
Atrichum longifolium Cardot & Dixon ex Gangulee – S. India [Chopra 1975: 16]. No certain
record from Tamil Nadu.
Ectropothecium manii Broth. – Gangulee (1980: 1990) listed this species from "South India" and
his distribution map indicates a locality in the Western Ghats which, however, may be in either
Kerala or Tamil Nadu.
Entodon beyrichii (Schwägr.) Müll.Hal. – Reported from Nilghiri by Montagne (1842: 247), as
Isothecium beyrichii Mont. (Neckera beyrichii), but requiring confirmation.
Entodon rubicundus (Griff.) A.Jaeger – South India [Gangulee 1980: 1783]. No certain record
from Tamil Nadu.
Leucoloma tenerum Mitt. – S. India, Kanara [Chopra 1975: 86]. No certain record from Tamil
Nadu, the locality, Kanara, probably referring to a place in Karnataka.
Meiothecium jagorii (Müll.Hal.) Broth. – South India [Gangulee 1980: 1872]. No certain record
from Tamil Nadu.
Paraleucobryum albicans (Schwägr.) Loeske – Nilgheri [Montagne 1842a: 255]. P. albicans is
confined to the neotropics, and the Montagne record must refer to another species.
Philonotis dispersa (Cardot & P.de la Varde ) D.G.Griffin & W.R.Buck – S. India [Chopra 1975:
248]. No certain record from Tamil Nadu.
Pogonatum contortum (Menzies ex Brid.) Lesq. – circa Coonoor lectum [Montagne 1842a: 252].
Hyvönen (1989a) considered this species to be confined to both sides of the northern Pacific
Ocean. Gangulee does not accept P. contortum from S. India, and the Montagne record must
represent another species.
Pogonatum inflexum (Lindb.) Sande Lac. – reported from S. India (Chopra 1975: 24). Hyvönen
(1989) considered the species to be restricted to Japan and surrounding areas of NE Asia, and
that many records from mainland Asia are based on misidentifications of either P. neesii
(Müll.Hal.) Dozy or P. fuscatum Mitt.
Sphagnum ceylanicum Mitt. ex Warnst. – S. India [Chopra 1975: 4]. No certain record from Tamil
Nadu.
