Library Studies in the History of the Book. The leading biblioscholars
shed a fascinating light on many aspects of the history of the
book. The exceptionally wide range of topics relates to manuscripts
as well as the printed book. Essays cover papermaking in America,
hand bookbinding, authorship and maritime publishing in 18thcentury
Britain. Of special interest to the business historian are the
discussions of the financing of these operations. It is this process
of interdependent exchange that is the central theme to the essays
which are based on lectures given at the William Andrews Clark
Library.
privately published, describes important books in the history of the
literature of bookbinding, as well as important book bindings of the
Avery. Avery was the founder of the famous Avery Architectural
was formed with the intention of contributing to that collection.
The catalogue is in two parts, the first showing in chronological
order the works on bookbinding practical and historical, Nos. 1 to
120 bis. The catalogue describes the most important as well as the
earliest published practical works on the subject in English and
French. Part two, covering Nos. 121 to 243, describes specimens of
bindings for their merit as works of art for the time in which it was
made. The bindings in this section are arranged chronologically.
German blind-stamped bindings are described, as are Italian goldtooled
bindings and the famous Lyonnese painted bindings. Full
collations are provided. In all, 243 items are described. A scarce title.
FROM WEDNE SDAY, JUNE 27TH TO SATUR
DAY, JULY 7TH. London: J. & M.L. Tregaskis, “Caxton
Head”, 1894, large 8vo., sewn, stiff paper wrappers.
25 pages, with 8 leaves of chromolithographic plates.
$ 75.00
Catalogue of 75 bindings of a Kelmscott book (“King Florus and the
Fair Jehane”) from 29 different countries, exhibited at the London
bookseller “Caxton Head” in 1894. A number of well-known London
binders of the time are represented, but one also finds entries for
bindings from Australia, China, Persia and other places. Each
binding is described and 8 are illustrated with chromolithographic
plates. Judging from the descriptions and illustrations, these were
bindings partly in a retrospective, historicizing style, and partly
showing a William Morris-Art Nouveau influence. The introduction
by C. Davenport expresses a very conservative view of binding and
discusses some of the items. Of interest as a record of non-English
and even non-European fine binding at the end of the 19th century.
Wrappers worn and front cover detached with pieces along edge
missing. Some staining along outer edge of a few pages. Part of paper
guard adhering to the chromolithography on one plate. [55100]
editions, reproducing multicolor illustrated title and sample pages,
photo-illustrations of eleven bindings, etc., and includes four (tippedin)
multicolor endpaper samples. The beautiful designs are the work
of Otto Hupp and Karl Spindler. The hymnal was being printed by
J. H. Ed. Heitz (Heitz & Mündel) in Strassburg. The exterior of this
copy has darkened irregularly and shows minor soiling and wear.
Inside, the letterpress-printed, thick-paper leaves are well-preserved.
INGS, EVIDENCE AND PRINCIPLE S. New
Ever since W. H. James Weale laid the foundations for the scholarly
study of panel-stamped bindings in 1894, it has been universally
assumed that the stamps were hand-engraved, and thus that each
panel was a unique artifact. However, Fogelmark discovered that
virtually everything written since Weale’s study has been based on
a fundamental mistake. In Fogelmark’s search for literature on blind
panels, he had not been able to find a single item dealing with the
all-important questions of production and technique. Fogelmark
believes that one must understand the nature of the panel stamp
and the basic rules that guided its use before discussing matters of
attribution and iconography. He now presents decisive evidence that
panel stamps were cast in metal rather than hand engraved and were
often produced in multiple copies for wide distribution. Identical
stamps could be used concurrently in different shops, different cities
and even different countries.
Fogelmark’s research is based on many years of research in a large
number of European libraries and a detailed study of various technical
and artistic features of the panels. This is a distinguished and highly
original contribution to bookbinding history, which greatly extends
knowledge of the late medieval booktrade. An exciting work,
handsomely produced at The Stinehour Press. [71394]
First edition, first printing. The sixth book on book design and
bookbinding from the book artist K.A. Smith, with the assistance
of the binder and teacher F.A. Jordan, covers the making of
books from the selection of paper from the standpoint of binding
requirements up to and including finishing. Three bindings suitable
for nonprofessional (but not unskilled!) binders are emphasized:
pamphlet binding in boards, flat back (cased) binding, and tight back
(rounded and backed) quarter leather. There are many photographic
illustrations and clear drawings of structures, materials, processes
and finished products. With notes, a glossary, indexes and a list of
paper and leather suppliers. [53429]
-quick leather bindings, with no paste or glue. Divided into sections
A Te c h n i c A l gu i d e
by Jen Lindsay
The purpose of this book is to guide the reader
through the sequence of operations involved
in creating a book bound in leather, or a “fine binding.”
The author defines a fine binding as a book
fully covered in leather, with leather-jointed
endpapers, gilt edges, and leather doublures.
Although a basic knowledge of bookbinding terms
and techniques is assumed, this book is meant for
both novice and experienced bookmakers.
The book is intended to be used as an active
guide during the process of fine binding. It is
arranged into sixteen sections, listing the sequence
of operations, beginning with preliminary work
and ending with preparing and putting in leather
doublures. Each section includes appropriately
numbered instructions allowing the user to find his
or her place in the sequence of operations with a reference for what step is next. There are also numbered explanatory
sections that include a rationale (why you do it) and technique (how you do it). The work includes close to 300 black
and white illustrations, four appendices, and a bibliography.
Jen Lindsay is a bookbinder with extensive experience in teaching, lecturing, and writing on bookbinding and
