Since the appearance of The Binder’s Art in 1989, respected bookbinding historian and craftsman Bernard C. Middleton continued to add to his collection of books and ephemera on the history and techniques of bookbinding, begun in the 1940s. Numbering about 2,000 volumes, the love of Middleton’s professional life is now installed in the Cary Graphic Arts Collection at the Rochester Institute of Technology where it is fully available to students and scholars in its own reading room. This catalogue describes and illustrates in color 34 highlights from Middleton’s collection and is complemented by four classic Middleton essays updated, where appropriate, for this compilation. London: The First Edition Club, 1926, 4to., red cloth stamped in gilt, top edge gilt. xii, 68 pages plus 30 fullpage plates of bindings. $ 100.00 S-K 875. Printed in an edition limited to 600 numbered copies (this copy is out of series) at the Chiswick Press, being the tenth book published by the First Editions Club.This exhibition of about 300 bindings was held over two days at the house of Sir Philip Sassoon and featured books from private libraries in or near London. Its strength lay chiefly in English works from 1660 to 1700, regarded by the author as the Golden Age of bookbinding in England. G.D. Hobson (1882–1949) was a partner in Sotheby’s (1909) and did more than anyone to promote the serious study of historical bookbinding. “In choosing the bindings for reproduction, my object has been to select the most interesting unpublished examples, only one of our thirty bindings has ever been reproduced previously” (introduction). Thirty full-page plates of bindings, including eighteen embossed chromolithographs. Spine slightly faded with a small worn spot at top of spine. Bookplate removed from front pastedown. [98831] 161.
