i. David Anrias (c. early 20 th century)
Man and the Zodiac. George Routledge & Sons, 1938.
Man and the Zodiac includes full-body drawings of individuals which link physical
appearance to the Ascendant placed in each of the 36 Hindu decans. The composite drawings
are intended to demonstrate the pure impact of the decan on physical appearance with no
references made to either the decan ruler or the decan ruler’s sign.
David Anrias was the pseudonym for an anonymous astrologer and Theosophist whose
colleagues included Cyril Scott. Though I have no facts to support the linkage, it appears the
rediscovery of the Hindu decans and dwads by Alan Leo during his 1909 and 1911 Indian trips
was the inspiration for this book. Anrias appears to have operated during the generation of
British astrologers and theosophists following Leo’s death in 1917. As stated before, Leo’s style
of decan delineation is entirely psychological. By making physiognomic assessments of the
decans, Anrias complements Leo’s psychological approach.
