just three miles east<br />

of Superior, Arizona.<br />

Kennecott M<strong>in</strong>erals Company<br />

Kennecott M<strong>in</strong>erals (KMC) produces<br />

gold, silver, z<strong>in</strong>c, copper and other base<br />

metals from wholly owned and jo<strong>in</strong>t<br />

venture operations <strong>in</strong> the US.<br />

Kennecott M<strong>in</strong>erals manages the<br />

Kennecott Greens Creek M<strong>in</strong>e<br />

(70.3 percent ownership) <strong>in</strong> Alaska,<br />

which produces silver, z<strong>in</strong>c, gold<br />

and lead. The Cortez Gold M<strong>in</strong>es<br />

operation <strong>in</strong> Nevada is 40 percent<br />

owned by Kennecott M<strong>in</strong>erals.<br />

Kennecott M<strong>in</strong>erals is <strong>in</strong> the process<br />

of permitt<strong>in</strong>g the Eagle project,<br />

an underground nickel/copper m<strong>in</strong>e<br />

<strong>in</strong> northern Michigan.<br />

Kennecott M<strong>in</strong>erals has successfully<br />

closed and reclaimed several m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

operations and is <strong>in</strong> the process of<br />

rehabilitat<strong>in</strong>g another <strong>in</strong> Nevada. Both<br />

the Flambeau M<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> Wiscons<strong>in</strong> and the<br />

Ridgeway M<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> South Carol<strong>in</strong>a have<br />

achieved closure with ongo<strong>in</strong>g benefits<br />

to the local communities<br />

The Flambeau M<strong>in</strong>e located near Ladysmith, Wiscons<strong>in</strong>, produced over more than 1.8 million short tons of copper and gold ore dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

operations from 1991 to 1996. F<strong>in</strong>al reclamation and seed<strong>in</strong>g was completed by 1999. The reclaimed m<strong>in</strong>e site <strong>in</strong>cludes a system of<br />

hik<strong>in</strong>g and recreational trails, prairie and woodland habitat and more than ten acres of wetlands.<br />

Both facilities have received the US<br />

Department of Interior Reclamation and<br />

Susta<strong>in</strong>able M<strong>in</strong>erals Development<br />

Award (2003 and 2005, respectively).<br />

M<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g at the Rawhide M<strong>in</strong>e (51 percent<br />

ownership) <strong>in</strong> Nevada ceased <strong>in</strong> 2003,<br />

and reclamation at the m<strong>in</strong>e is partially<br />

completed. A susta<strong>in</strong>able development<br />

plan to utilize the open pits as a landfill<br />

for community benefit is progress<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Resolution Copper Company<br />

The Resolution project is <strong>in</strong> the historic<br />

Pioneer M<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g District just three miles<br />

east of Superior, Arizona. Exploration<br />

conducted from 2001 to 2003 <strong>in</strong>dicates a<br />

large copper orebody more than 7,000<br />

feet below the surface. If developed, the<br />

project will be an underground m<strong>in</strong>e that<br />

will have positive environmental impacts<br />

through programs <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a voluntary<br />

cleanup <strong>in</strong>itiative and ISO 14001:2004<br />

registration. The project is under<br />

evaluation and if feasibility studies are<br />

successful, production would likely beg<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> the next decade.<br />
