WASHINGTON SCENE 

Serbian Orthodox Church Delegation 

in Washington, DC 

A delegation of the Serbian Orthodox 

Church visited the United States of America 

from March 25th lasting until April 15th, 

2005. The delegation was appointed by the 

Holy Synod of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox 

Church, with His Holiness Serbian 

Patriarch Pavle presiding, according to decision 

no. 123 of the Holy Synod of Bishops 

dated January 28, 2005. 

The members of the delegation included: 

- His Grace Bishop Grigorije of Zahumlje 

and Herzegovina – member of the Holy 

Synod of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox 

Church and the Holy Assembly of Bishops 

of the Serbian Orthodox Church’s Council 

for Kosovo; 

- His Grace Bishop Teodosije of Lipljan 

– abbot of Visoki Decani Monastery, vicar 

to the Bishop of Raska and Prizren and 

member of the Holy Assembly of Bishops 

of the Serbian Orthodox Church’s Council 

for Kosovo; 

- Hieromonk Irinej Dobrijevic – consultant 

to the Holy Synod of Bishops for international 

and inter-church affairs and member 

of the Holy Assembly of Bishops of the Serbian 

Orthodox Church’s Council for Kosovo; 

- Dr. Bogoljub Sijakovic – vice-dean for sciences 

of the Orthodox Theological Faculty 

of the University of Belgrade; and 

- Andrej (Andy) Veric – director of the Serbian 

Unity Congress Washington office 

Accompanying them was monk Jezekilj, 

secretary of the SOC Delegation 

The first meeting began at the United Nations 

headquarters in New York City to discuss 

matters of importance of the Serbian 

Orthodox Church in Kosovo-Metohija, Republika 

Srpska, and elsewhere. At the UN, 

the SOC Delegation presented the recently 

signed Memorandum on the restoration of 

Serbian Orthodox holy shrines signed by 

Patriarch Pavle by the Serbian Orthodox 

Church directly to the UN Secretary General 

Kofi Anan. 

The Delegation of the Serbian Orthodox 

Church visit to New York 

NEW YORK - Following the meeting at the 

United Nations, the Delegation split into 

two groups. Bishop Grigorije, Fr. Irinej, 

and Dr. Sijakovic arranged meetings with 

the office of Religions for Peace, which has 

helped to mediate violent conflicts in the 

Balkans and elsewhere. Bishop Teodosije, 

Fr. Jezekilj, and Andy Verich, met with the 

Italian U.N. Mission. At the Italian Mission, 

Bishop Teodosije presented icons and 

gifts to the Italian diplomats who spent time 

in KiM as a sign of appreciation for their 

friendship. 

On March 29, the Delegation was invited 

to the Park East Synagogue in Manhattan 

to meet with Senior Rabbi Arthur Schneier, 

President, Appeal of Conscience Foundation. 

During the discussions, Rabbi Schneier 

proposed that the Appeal of Conscience 

Foundation organize a conference in Belgrade 

with all the religious leaders of the 

various ethnic groups throughout the Balkans. 

These discussions could address the 

various ethnic and religious issues in the 

region. Bishop Grigorije also announced 

that following the Delegation’s visit to the 

United States, plans will be put forth to hold 

a memorial for the Jasenovac crimes. 

The SOC Delegation meets with members 

of the SUC DC Chapter and St. Luke Serbian 

Orthodox Church 

WASHINGTON – In coordination with 

SUC Board member Sofija Skoric and SUC 

DC Chapter member George Jovanovic a 

presentation by Bogoljub Sijakovic was 

given at St. Luke Serbian Orthodox Church 

in Potomac, MD on April 2, 2005. The presentation 

focused on Professor Sijakovic’s 

book “A Critique of Balkanistic Discourse.” 

Following the presentation, the SOC Delegation 

took questions from the audience. 

In addition to the book, the Bishops spoke 

about the Delegation’s goal of visiting the 

United States and situation of the SOC 

throughout former Yugoslavia. Professor Sijakovic 

also provided his expertise on the 

situation in Montenegro. 

A number of people expressed 

interest to purchase Professor Sijakovic’s 

book, after the successful presentation. It 

was announced that the book could be ordered 

by sending a check to the Serbian 

Literary Company in the amount of $15 (includes

NOTE: Professor Sijakovic is an author of 

many books and a Professor of Greek Philosophy 

at the Faculty of Philosophy in Niksic 

and a Professor at the Faculty of Theology 

in Belgrade (Serbia and Montenegro). From 

the fall of 2000 to the end of 2002 he was 

a Minister of Religious Affairs in the Federal 

Government of Yugoslavia. He authored the 

Law on Religions, widely deemed to have 

met the highest of European standards. 

High-Level Meeting at the U.S. State Department 

WASHINGTON – On April 4, 2005 the 

Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns received 

the Serbian Orthodox Church Delegation. 

Burns, a former Ambassador to 

Greece and later to NATO, has recently 

replaced Undersecretary Marc Grossman. 

The position is the third highest in State 

Department after Secretary of State Condoleeza 

Rice. The Undersecretary expressed 

that he is focusing on relations with Serbia 

Montenegro, Bosnia – Herzegovina and in 

particular Kosovo. According to Bishop 

Grigorije, this is the highest level meeting at 

State Department ever made by members of 

the Serbian Orthodox Church. 

Bishop Grigorije opened his discussion 

with the following: “We have come 

from a small land but with great problems.” 

However, the Bishop stated that the Serbian 

Orthodox Church will stay in Kosovo 

– Metohija - no matter what the political 

outcome is. The Ambassador responded 

that as a former representative of NATO, 

he is truly disturbed how KFOR performed 

in March of 2004. The Undersecretary expressed 

that following the March anti-Serb 

pogrom, meetings took place at the highest 

level of the Department of Defense to 

work out the problems that NATO faced in 

its failure to halt violence against the Serbs 

in KiM. However, he stated very strongly 

that this should never have taken place under 

NATO’s watch. Furthermore, and not 

mentioning countries by name, the Undersecretary 

blamed the failure on several 

countries who took orders from the capitals 

rather than the KFOR central command. 

“You know who these countries are,” stated 

the Undersecretary.

The Delegation then presented their ideas 

for the future of reconstruction for KiM. Due 

to the successful meeting with Kofi Anan, 

UNMIK issued an executive order to establish 

buffer zones around the monasteries. 

These zones will allow Serbs to return and 

to lay down the ground work for repatriation 

of Serbs in KiM. However, members of 

the Delegation also reported that there are 

still obstacles to implementing free zones. 

Floren Krasniqi, made famous for his recent 

interview with CBS 60 Minutes on how he 

duped U.S. customs to send arms to the KLA 

in Kosovo, is claiming territory surrounding 

the monasteries for his personal business 

projects. Krasniqi, reported the Delegation 

to the Undersecretary is an American citizen 

from the area of Decani. His projects 

to extract marble and bottle spring water 

on Church property will be an obstacle to 

the Church’s plans to encourage repatriation. 

Therefore, an important step that has 

to be made is restitution of property seized 

during the communist era in order for the 

Church to secure its rightful ownership. The 

Undersecretary indicated he will discuss 

these issues with Pristina Mission and Contact 

Group. 

The Undersecretary will be meeting 

with members of the Contact Group to 

discuss Kosovo this Wednesday in London. 

White House Meeting 

WASHINGTON – The Serbian Orthodox 

Church delegation, headed by Their Graces 

Bishop Grigorije of Zahumlje and Herzegovina, 

and Bishop Teodosije of Lipljan 

(Kosovo-Metohija), met with advisors to 

President Bush from the National 

Security Council in the 

White House to discuss proposals 

for reconstruction of Serbian 

Orthodox Holy sites, restitution 

of property and repatriation of 

Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija. 

The advisors included Dr. 

Jack Crouch II, Assistant to the 

President and Deputy National 

Security Advisor in the White 

House, and Dan Fried, a top 

aide at the White House National 

Security Council. Ambassador 

Fried explained to 

the Delegation the process that 

will take place in the next six 

to eight months in deciding the 

status on Kosovo. According 

to Fried, during the summer of 

2005 the International Community will review 

the so-called standards. Only if the 

U.N. finds there is enough standards that 

have been achieved will there be any start 

to the status process. He also emphasized 

that nobody will make any announcements 

of a decision of status whatsoever until 

there is a long discussion of which Serbs 

will be part of. Fried also advised the Delegation 

that the Serbs should not wait for 

this discussion to begin. They should begin 

rebuilding as much as possible. He further 

advised that the Serbs in Kosovo need to 

participate more and that the United States 

wishes local power to be strengthened and 

that Serbs should have more power. 

The Delegation presented to the 

White House the proposal of the Serbian 

Orthodox Church to begin the repatriation 

of Serbs to the newly established buffer 

zone around the Decani Monastery. This 

will allow Serbs to be gainfully employed 

in the reconstruction and allow Serbs to 

have a chance to work through the UNMIK 

tendering process for reconstruction of Serb 

Holy Sites. The Delegation explained that 

Serbs should live in compact areas instead 

of repatriating Serbs in small islands that 

cannot provide security or ability to sustain 

lives. When this is achieved, it will become 

more feasible for Serbs to be able to re-enter 

the transitional government. 

The Delegation further presented 

the need for restitution of property in Kosovo 

– Metohija. Although UNMIK has issued an 

order declaring Decani as a buffer zone, the 

Albanian-American roofing businessman 

Florin Krasniqi is threatening to develop 

his own private business enterprise on the 


Church’s lands. Not only would this disrupt 

the lives and work of the Decani brotherhood, 

it also will prevent repatriation of 

Serbs to this buffer zone. The Delegation 

further provided articles and transcripts of 

Krasniqi’s recent interviews with CBS 60 

minutes, and his boasting of running arms 

from the United States to Kosovo unhindered. 

The Delegation then presented the 

White House with a copy of a documentary 

titled “The Brooklyn Connection” provided 

by the SUC Washington office that reveals 

Krasniqi’s gun running and ties to the KLA. 

The documentary was televised last summer 

in Holland and also catches Krasniqi 

and his associates on film donating money 

to Richard Holbrooke and General Clark for 

the 2004 Kerry Presidential Campaign. 

The Delegation also mentioned 

the importance of these meetings not just 

for Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija or in Serbia, 

but for the Serb Diaspora in the United 

States. The Delegation noted that Delegation 

members Fr. Irinej Dobrijevic and Andy 

Verich are American born Serbs and the importance 

of the role of the Serb Diaspora 

for consulting on these issues. The Serbian 

Unity Congress in particular represents the 

Serb community in the United States. 

As a result of the Delegation’s presentations, 

the Deputy National Security Advisor 

Dr. Crouch stated that he understands 

the problems of Serbs in Kosovo much better 

now. He also agreed that restitution is a 

huge issue for them and he further advised 

that the Serbian Orthodox Church and SUC 

Washington office to maintain contacts 

with the Administration and State Department. 

The White House also promised to 

study the Delegation’s proposals and to see 

how to move forward. 

Important Notes: 

Dr. Jack Crouch II is the Assistant to 

President George W. Bush and the Deputy 

National Security Advisor. Prior to his post, 

Dr. Crouch was the Ambassador to Romania 

which saw its integration into NATO 

and earlier, he was the Assistant Secretary 

of Defense for International Security Policy 

from 2001 to 2003. 

Ambassador Dan Fried is a former 

U.S. ambassador to Poland and is nominated 

to become the U.S. assistant secretary of 

state for European affairs pending Senate 

confirmation. His nomination is reportedly 

being backed by Senator George Voinovich 

(R-OH) who assisted in contacting Fried 

during the March 17, 2004 anti-Serb riots.

During the riots, it was reported that Fried 

was instrumental in securing a more robust 

rules of engagement for the U.S. contingent 

of KFOR that resulted in the failure of Albanians 

to attack Serb Holy Sites within the 

U.S. sector. 

Most recently he has been senior 

NSC director for European and Eurasian affairs 

and a trusted adviser to Condoleezza 

Rice when she was President Bush’s national 

security adviser. 

SOC Delegation presents reconstruction 

and repatriation proposals to USAID Director, 

Andrew Natsios on April 5 

WASHINGTON – The SOC Delegation met 

with Andrew Natsios, Administrator of the 

United States Agency for Internatnational 

Development (USAID). The meeting included 

Sarah Farnsworth, USAID Balkans 

Division, and several aids to Natsios. Mr. 

Natsios listened to the presentations by the 

members of the Delegation about the situation 

in KiM and received concrete proposals 

of how the USAID can assist the plans of 

the Serbian Orthodox Church to establish a 

buffer zone in which repatriated Serbs can 

participate in reconstruction efforts of the 

Church and the local economy. 

During the meeting, Natsios asked 

Sarah Farnsworth of the USAID Balkans Division 

why aren’t programs already helping 

the Serbs in Kosovo. Farnsworth noted that 

previously Serbs have refused to cooperate. 

However, the Delegation explained that the 

Serbian Orthodox Church has established 

a contact office at the Patriarchate in Belgrade 

and they may contact the Church via 

the Serbian Unity Congress Washington 

office for any coordination of USAID projects. 

Natsios instructed Farnsworth to begin 

moving forward with establishing contact. 

The groups also discussed the importance 

of restitution of property and its importance 

of solving many issues – including the proposals 

of Floren Krasniqi to seize Church 

property for his own business interests. Mr. 

Natsios explained that this is a real problem 

even with his own family – who are 

Greeks who were land owners in present 

day southern Albania. Natsios himself personally 

visited his family’s land which contained 

fertile vineyards and farm land but 

because of Albanian discrimination against 

Orthodox in Albania, his family still has not 

been granted restitution to land he feels is 

rigthfully his family’s.

ciate of Fr. Irinej Dobrijevic who served together 

on the board of directors of the International 

Orthodox Church Charities (IOCC) 

before he came to USAID. 

The SUC Washington office hosts important 

meetings for the Serbian Orthodox 

WASHINGTON – In addition to facilitating 

various press conferences and interviews 

with members of the Serbian media, 

the SUC Washington office hosted several 

meetings of importance for the Delegation 

of the Serbian Orthodox Church on April 

6, 2005. Director for Southeast Europe of 

the White House National Security Council, 

Bertram Braun met the Delegation to 

discuss the upcoming meeting at the White 

House. Mr. Braun reported to the Delegation 

what he believes will be the reality and 

future for Kosovo. 

Braun stated that a comprehenisve 

review of standards in Kosovo will take place 

this summer. The reason why the United 

States wants to start the standards process 

is because, the current situation is bad, explained 

Braun. Following the review, there 

will be a new resolution that will deal with 

solving the issues and restitution and a detailed 

plan will be submitted to members of 

the International Community. This will lead 

to a new U.N. resolution. However, Braun 

doubts that the result will allow Kosovo to 

become reintegrated back into Serbia under 

Belgrade, but instead will most likely result 

in some kind of unit of government that will 

require International protection. Braun also 

advised that the Serb community and the 

Serbian Orthodox Church need to propose 

concrete plans in details what they want 

and what they need to make a Kosovo solution 

work. Once they have a detailed plan, 

the Serbs then will be able to engage the 

team conducting 

the review. He also 

stated that Belgrade 

must be involved 

with this process 

and work with it 

and not try to derail 

it. He also hopes 

that Russia will also 

not try to derail this 

process.

visits in New York and Washington including 

details of the fruitful meeting with the 

USAID Administrator Andrew Natsios, former

It was agreed that the IOCC will 

work with the Serbian Orthodox Church to 

assist with the facilitation of the proposed 

plans of reconstruction of Serb Orthodox 

Holy Sites and repatriation of Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija.

Congressional Serbian Caucus FAQ’s: 

Q: How do I get my Congressional representative to join the Serbian 

Caucus? 

A: 1. First you need to find out who your rep is. 

2. Contact your rep’s district office by telephone or fax and ask 

them to join the Serbian Caucus. 

3. Follow up. You must remember to be persistent (but still courteous!). 

It does not hurt to check up. 

4. Contact the SUC Washington office for additional questions, 

advice. 

5. Remember 3 things: Presence (we have a Serb presence in the 

USA), Professionalism, and Persistence - Serbs do not give up!

Q: I sent an email to my rep to join. I have not heard anything 

back yet. 

A: Just sending an email does not ensure it will be read. Hand written 

mail takes longer but has the best chance of being answered. 

Faxes are also effective and a follow up phone call is even better 

yet. It takes just a little work but affecting some change to help 

Serbs is well worth it. We all can do our part! 

Q: I see my Congressional representative has already joined. 

What can I do to help? 

A: Congratulations that your rep has joined the Serbian Caucus. 

Your rep needs to hear from you! 

Members of the Serbian Caucus need to know how much their 

constituents are interested in Serbian issues. They cannot determine 

this if Serbs do not inform their reps. 

Q: Is the Serbian Caucus a lobby group? 

A: No, this is a common misunderstanding. The Caucus is an informal 

group of lawmakers who meet to discuss issues related to 

Serbia and the Serbian people (Contact SUC for a free copy and 

Caucus kit). This is very important for Serbs for the following reasons: 

1. Due to terrorism, events in the Middle East, Sudan, and numerous 

other issues, the Balkans receive less attention these days. A 

Serbian Caucus ensures that more attention is paid to human rights 

of Serbs in the region and ensuring better relations between Serbian 

and the United States. 

2. In the past, members of Congress received their information 

from limited sources. Most often this information was misleading 

or biased against Serbs. A Serbian Caucus combined with the Serb- 

American involvement, will ensure that the members of Congress 

receive the Serbian side of the story. 

3. Participation by Serb - Americans is crucial. Most members who 

join the Caucus joined because their constituents took the time 

and initiative to show their rep there is a Serb community within 

their district. The more interest in Serb issues that Serb Americans 

display, the more members of Congress will take our issues seriously.

Десета година рада на подстицању образовања у Матици, Задужбина Студеница 

И ове године Задужбина Срба из 

Америке, Студеница, доделила је 

стипендије у вредности од 50.000 

долара. На свечаној додели у сали 

Министарства за дијаспору педесет 

студената из Приштине, Београда, Новог 

Сада, Котора, Никшића, Бања Луке 

итд. примило је овогодишње стипендије. 

У име председника Задубине г. 

Мирослава Мајкла Ђорђевића добитнике 

је поздравила и честитала им 

директор КСУ у Београду Славка Драшковић. 

Присутне стипендисте и госте 

поздравили су Министар за дијаспору 

Војислав Вукчевић и његов заменик, 

Александар Чотрић. Министар Вукчевић 

је том приликом поздравио овакве напоре 

дијаспоре истичући посебан значај 

које образовање има за нацију. 

Свечаности су присуствовали и представници 

Бироа Републике Српске, 

бројни новинари, уредници и представници 

медија, чланови КСУ и гости. 

Студеницу су основале 1995. у Сан 

Франциску породице угледних чланова 

Конгрес српског уједињења, Мирослава 

Мајкла Ђорђевића, породица Ћеловића 

из Детроита и Боре Вуковића из Денвера. 

Осим давања стипендија Студеница 

је до сада помогла издавање више од 

десет књига за школе, давала награде 

ђацима на литерарним конкурсима 

које је организовала у Србији и РС, 

опремила рачунарски неколико школа 

и студентских организација, помогла 

више студијских путовања и докторских 

и магистарских радова. У сарадњи са 

Nikolic Trust Задужбина помаже да 

докторате заврши око 20 студената из 

Србије Црне Горе и РС на престижним 

универзитетима у Америци. Конкурс 

за стипендије Задужбине за следећу 

2005/06 биће објављен крајем септембра 

на сајту Конгреса српског уједињења.

САОПШТЕЊЕ О ПДВ-У НА 

ХУМАНИТАРНУ ПОМОЋ 

Министарство за дијаспору Владе 

Републике Србије реаговало је на 

бројне захтеве дијаспоре за укидање 

пореза на додату вредност (ПДВ) на 

хуманитарну помоћ и у складу са тим 

проф. др Војислав Вукчевић, министар 

за дијаспору у Влади Републике Србије 

је поднео иницијативу Влади Републике 

Србије за измену Закона о порезу на 

додату вредност, којом би хуманитарна 

помоћ увезена из иностранства била 

ослобођена од наведеног пореза. 

Реагујући између осталог и на иницијативу 

Министарства за дијаспору 

која је проистекла из апела многобројних 

припадника дијаспоре чија је

измена и допуна Закона о

порезу на додату вредност предвиђено 

и ослобађање од обавезе плаћања ПДВ 

при увозу хуманитарне помоћи и добара 

која су предмет уговора о донацији. 

Министар финансија господин Млађан 

Динкић је најавио и да ће бити извршена 

рефундација и за период од почетка 

примене Закона о ПДВ, па до ступања 

на снагу измена овог правног акта. ПДВ 

се више неће плаћати ни при увозу 

ортопедских помагала за инвалиде.

Драги земљаци, 

Поштовани сународници, 

Министарство за дијаспору Републике 

Србије ради на Предлогу закона о сарадњи 

са дијаспором. У јединственом 

законском тексту, чије се усвајање у 

Скупштини Србије очекује до краја 2005. 

године, биће кодификована целокупна 

материја која се односи на питања исељеништва, 

њихових потомака, као и 

припадника српског народа ван граница 

Србије. 

На овом правном акту, поред правника 

из Министарства, раде и стручњаци Института 

за упоредно право, Универзитета 

у Београду, Српске академије наука 

и уметности,Српске православне цркве 

и других националних институција. 

Закон ће, поред осталог, уређивати 

питања држављанства, гласања у иностранству, 

избора представника дијаспоре, 

образовања и информисања 

на матерњем језику, као и односа са 

матичном државом на привредном, културном, 

просветном и спортском плану. 

С обзиром на то да се Министарство држи 

принципа — НИШТА О ДИЈАСПОРИ 

БЕЗ ДИЈАСПОРЕ, позивамо вас у 

својству представника удружења, клубова, 

асоцијација и савеза, да нам доставите 

своје предлоге и савете који ће 

бити најозбиљније размотрени током 

рада на писању Закона о сарадњи са 

дијаспором и, верујемо, уграђени у текст

Састанак са Љиљаном Милутиновић, 

генералним секретаром 


Крајем марта завршено је пресељење 

КСУ Канцеларије у Београду. Много 

посла око селидбе целе канцеларије 

опреме и телефона и брзе компјутерске 

везе надокнађено је сјајном локацијом 

и могућностима новог простора. На 

новој адреси у Васиној 20 у поткровљу, 

у самом срцу Београда, канцеларија је 

смештена на око 100 м 2 , колико је отприлике 

био велик и простор на ранијој 

адреси. 

Други, пространији део простора величине 

око 140 м 2 , који је КСУ такође 

изнајмио, за сада је празан и ту је планиран 

Пословни центар дијаспоре који 

ће моћи да користе све организације 

из дијаспоре, као и појединци приватно 

или пословно. Овај део под 

радним називом «Ваша канцеларија 

у Београду» замишљен је да пружа 

информације како да се региструје 

фирма, коју банку или адвоката да изаберу, 

каква је правна регулатива за 

поједине области улагања и сл. Поред 

основних секретарских услуга, Центар 

би посредовао око организовања састанака, 

press конференција, успостављања 

контактата, рекламе, обавештавања 

о привредним догађањима, 

итд. У току је процес дефинисања и 

планирања буџета за овај пројекат. У 

истом простору биће и професионални 

Press центар, где ће се објављивати и 

часопис Министарства за дијаспору посвећен 

дијаспори. 

Генерални секретар Министарства дијаспоре, 

у чијој се згради налази простор 

за организације из дијаспоре посетила 

је канцеларију КСУ. Разговарано је о 

сарадњи и редовној размени информација.

УНАПРЕДИТИ ПРИВРЕДУ 

СРБИЈЕ 

Канцеларија Конгреса српског уједињења 

у Београду радила је на 

дефинисању и организацији новог 

концепта Економског форума који је 

последњих пар година држан као претходница 

КСУ Конвенције. 

Основна намера је да се развије идеја 

Форума и да се привуку стране инвестиције 

у Србију те да дијаспора допринесе 

унапређењу српске привреде. 

Да би овај концепт био успешан заказали 

смо у Београду заједнички састанак 

на коме су почетком априла 

учествовали, поред КСУ, представици 

Министарства за дијаспору, Привредне 

коморе Србије, SIEPA-е и Националне 

Штедионице. На састанку је договорена 

подршка ових институција напорима 

Конгреса српског уједињења да се Економски 

форум успешно организује. Део 

подршке је помоћ у припреми Форума, 

који би био на јесен у Америци, једним 

припремним скупом — Форумом на 

пролеће у Београду. Оба ова догађаја, 

припремни у Београду и централни у 

Америци, добила су већ подршку министра 

дијаспоре Вукчевића и министра 

привреде и приватизације, Бубала, тако 

да је састанак о коме је реч био први 

оперативни састанак како бисмо ове 

идеје и одлуке спровели у дело.

SAN DIEGO SERBS RECRUIT 

CONGRESSMAN ISSA

Two of Issa’s assistants were present including his District 

Director. 

A delegation of SUC members met 

with Congressman Darrell Issa, California 

Republican in the San Diego North County 

to brief him on the Balkans and to invite 

him to join the Serbian Caucus. The members 

were Dr. Sam Mikolaski, past chapter 

president and Issa’s constituent, Lilly Pantovich, 

chapter president, and Dr. Vojin Joksimovich, 

past SUC president. Two of Issa’s 

assistants were present including his District 

Director. 

Darrell Issa, 50, was first elected to 

Congress in 2000 and currently serves on 

the House Government Reform Committee 

where he is Chairman of the Subcommittee 

on Energy and Resources. He is also a 

member of the House International Committee 

and House Judiciary Committee. . 

He is best known in California as the architect 

of a successful effort to recall former 

governor Gray Davis in 2003. 

Prior to election to the Congress, 

Issa was a technology industry leader and 

CEO. He founded Vista based Directed Electronics, 

the industry-leading manufacturer 

of automobile security and convenience 

products. He had served as Chairman of the 

Consumer Electronics Association, Director 

of the San Diego Economic Development 

Association and the Greater San Diego 

County Chamber of Commerce. In 1994 received 

the Entrepreneur of the Year Award. 

Issa is the grandson of immigrants and an 

Orthodox Christian. 

Sam offered introductory remarks 

in which he pointed out that Serbs are loyal 

Americans who believe in democracy and 

market economy, but are concerned about 

the welfare of the Serbian 

people in particular those 

living in Kosovo where 

their human rights have 

been violated daily for 

almost six years. Lilly expanded 

on the history and 

work of the SUC and the 

recently formed Serbian 

Caucus. Congressman Issa 

told us that he had already 

decided to join the Caucus 

and was looking forward 

to working with congressmen 

Dan Burton and Rahm 

Emanuel. 

Hence, the further discussion 

was focused on 

Kosovo. Vojin added the 

concrete data on the present 

situation and left some 

materials with the congressman 

including his Kosovo book. Issa 

questioned why Kosovo independence was 

unacceptable to the Serbs. He was told that 

Kosovo to the Serbs is equivalent to what 

Jerusalem is for the Jews, Vatican to Roman 

Catholics, Mecca to Muslims and Alamo to 

Texans. Issa was of the opinion that our best 

case was human rights violations. When 

Vojin mentioned terrorism, he said that everybody 

was using that argument. However, 

it turned out that he was unaware of White 

Al Qaeda existence in Kosovo and Bosnia. 

Vojin recommended that Bodansky should 

brief him.

MEETS LAS VEGAS SERBS 

On Sunday, March 27, 2005, several 

BoD members traveled to Las Vegas, and 

gave two-hour long presentation to about 

100 Las Vegas Serbs in the St. Simeon Serbian 

Orthodox Church. The BoD members 

were met with great hospitality and interest, 

and friendly discussion about presented issues 

and ways for better collaboration lasted 

long after the presentation was over. 

We would like to express our gratitude 

to Fr. Uros Todorovic, dr Aleksandar 

Knezevic, president, and Veselin Jevtic, 

vice-president of the Executive Board of St. 

Simeon, and particularly to Marko Rucnov, 

Zoran and Kristina Savicic, who help with 

the organization of our visit. Also, we are 

grateful to Prof. Michael Pravica, who recently 

joined the faculty at the University of 

Nevada, Las Vegas, for agreeng to help with 

our Washington efforts.

Having in mind that Nevada has 

only 2 congressmen (Jim Gibbons, R-NV2, 

and Jon C. Porter, R-NV3) and one congresswoman 

(Shelley Berkley, D-NV1) we prepared 

3 sets of packages that also included 

the Census 2000 data for ethic groups from 

former Yugoslavia for all three congressional 

districts . For example, in Nevada Congressional 

District 1 there are 54% Serbs, 35% 

Croats and only 2% Albanians, while in Nevada 

Congressional District 2 there are 65% 

Serbs, 22% Croats and 2% Albanians. 

Overall, the BoD members meetings 

with local Serbian communities were 

very successful in informing our members 

and getting them involved in our projects. 

We are planning to continue with this project 

and invite our members in local communities 

to organize similar events.

Uz 60 godina od jurisa obeznadjenih 

jasenovackih kostura na ustaske 

bodljikave zice, mitraljeze i bunkere 

“TRAZIMO POMILOVANJE” 

O jasenovackom sistemu ustaskih 

logora genocida nad Srbima, Jevrejima i 

Romima, kao i masovnom ubijanju nepocudnih 

elemenata bilo koje narodnosne 

provenijencije jedno vreme se uopste nije 

prilazilo sa bilo kakvim ljudskim pristupom 

i obzirima. Postivanje kulta mrtvih je davna 

civilizacijska tekovina, ako ne i najstariji 

ljudski trag. Tek, uz svaku komemorativnu 

svecanost, posvecenu svetom neprebroju 

jasenovackih velikomucenika, koje je prvo 

J. B. Tito poceo da “praktikuje” u poznije 

vreme svoje besprizivne faraonske vlasti, 

bila su prisutna najogoljelija politikantska 

podmetanja od one najsarkasticnije vrste, 

koja su uvek isla u smeru, pre svega, narusavanja 

vecnog mira bezbrojnih zrtava 

jasenovackog crnog arhipelaga i minimiziranja 

nepojamnog megagenocidnog 

zlocina koji je sa sobom “odnekud” doneo 

ustaski kleronacisticki pokret i koji se 

smatrao (a i danas smatra) drzavotvornim 

fundamentom Paveliceve Nezavisne 

Drzave Hrvatske, “porodjene” na nemackim 

bajonetama i vatikanskom svemocnim 

pokroviteljstvom i logistikom. 

Sa diktiranom marginalizacijom 

“jasenovacke teme” nastavljeno je veoma 

konzistentno sve do ovovremenih smutnih 

dana. U prvom planu je i dalje nastavljeno 

samo sa “pricom” o broju zrtava, dok je na 

nepojamne ustaske zlocine i neverovatno 

razrogacenom mrznjom brojnih egezekutora 

potpuno zaboravljeno ili jezuitski 

vesto relativizirano i skrajnuto. Najsveziji 

primer je “slucaj” Stjepana Mesica, sopstvenika 

osobitog sarkazma kada su u pitanju 

megazlocini neverovatne patologije 

u jasenovackom sistemu ustaskih logora 

genocida. Prvo je nedavno u Izraelu i to bas 

u Jad Vasemu napravio pravi diplomatski 

incident sarkasticno reagujuci na izjavu 

srpskog predstavnika iz Republike Srpske 

Paravca o stotinama hiljada ubijenih Srba u 

jasenovackim logorima, pitajuci ga kako je 

i gde sabrao tolike srpske zrtve, da bi nedavno 

na komemoraciji u samom Jasenovcu 

prolivao krokodilske suze za desetinama 

hiljada jasenovackih zrtava. Upravo kako je 

njegov poglavnik Franjo Tudjman govorio u 

Hagu krajem 1991. godine o 20 tisuca zrtava 

Jasenovca. S druge strane i na drugoj 

obali Save na memorijalnom kompleksu 

u Donjoj Gradini u povodu 60. godisnjice 

herojskog jurisa jasenovackih logorasa 

odrzana je 17. aprila ove godine visoko 

dostojanstvena komemorativna svecanost 

“Trazimo pomilovanje”. Njih nesto manje 

od hiljadu su u nedelju 22. aprila 1945. 

jurnuli golim prsima na ustasku bodljikavu 

zicu, mitraljeze i bunkere. Spasilo ih se 

nesto manje od stotine. Dan pre ustase su 

likvidirale zenski deo logora, usmrtivsi oko 

hiljadu zatocenih zena. Nakon odrzanog 

komemorativnog skupa u dostojanstvenoj 

tisini u Donjoj Gradini svetom je proletela 

gotovo neverovatna i velicanstvena vest, 

koja ce u mnogome pomoci da sveti jasenovacki 

neprebroj konacno nadje svoj, toliko 

zasluzeni, vecni smiraj. U Holokaust Parku 

u Bruklinu otkriveno je spomen obelezje 

u cast zaboravljenih jasenovackih zrtava, a 

gradonacelnik Njujork Sitija Majkl Blumberg 

proglasio je 17. april za dan secanja 

na nesrecne jasenovacke velikomucenike 

sa osnovnim motom da se to necuveno 

ustasko zlo nikada ne zaboravi (“So That 

You May Not Forget”). 

Uvod u stvaranje nove NDH poceo 

je upravo na tim “temeljima” minimiziranja 

ustaskog mega-zla u jasenovackim logorima 

(Logor I - Krapje, Logor II - Brocice, Logor 

III - Ciglana, Logor IV - Koz’ara, Logor V - 

Stara Gradiska, Logor VI - Lepoglava, Logor 

Kruscica, Logor Loborgrad, Logor Gornja 

Rijeka, Logor Djakovo, Logor Tenja, Logor 

Jastrebarsko, ...). I doprinos tome tekuceg 

predsednika najnovije hrvatske drzave je 

nezaobilazan. Naime, pred prve posleratne 

visestranacke izbore u Socijalistickoj Republici 

Hrvatskoj (koji ce se ubrzo pokazati 

kao prvi predratni izbori) u prolece 1990. 

godine slucaj je hteo (ili nije) da vreme tzv. 

izborne cutnje padne u vreme tradicionalnog 

komemorativnog skupa u Jasenovcu 

sa direktnim TV - prenosom za celu tadasnju 

Jugoslaviju. Tudjman-Mesiceva stranka 

HDZ (sa izbornim sloganom: “HDZ - 

zna se”) trazila je da direktni TV - prenos 

komemoracije jasenovackim zrtvama ne 

bude prikazivan na teritoriji Hrvatske, jer bi 

to podsecanje na neverovatne ustaske zlocine 

i neprebrojne jasenovacke zrtve moglo 

da utice na izborno telo (!). I ono sto je 

najzalosnije taj zahtev je uvazen od strane 

izborne komisije i direktnog TV - prenosa 

jasenovacke komemoracije nije bilo na teritoriji 

tadasnje Hrvatske. 

Ono sto ce se kasnije desiti u Hrvatskoj 

bilo je na postojanom tragu onih zlogukih 

“trecina” dr Mile Budaka - “Jednu trecinu 

Srba iseliti, jednu trecinu pokatoliciti, a 

JASENOVAC - 60 YEARS AFTER 

jednu trecinu - pobiti”. Taj i takav “drzavotvorni 

program” ucinio je da se u poslednjih 

stotinjak godina broj Srba na prostorima 

Slavonije, Dalmacije, Vojne Krajine i 

Hrvatske (danas je sve to - Hrvatska) smanjio 

za gotovo deset puta (!). Gde su pravoslavni 

Srbi danas u danasnjoj Hrvatskoj, a o 

katolickim Srbima vise nema ni nevidljivih 

tragova, a u prvim decenijama proslog 

veka imali su cak i svoje novine. Ono sto 

je tridesetih godina minulog veka svojevremeno 

pisao u listu “Hrvat” zloglasni Gustav 

Perhcec i danas je na dnevnom redu (uz 

aktuelne modalitete):Izvan sumnje je svima 

i svakome, da mi Hrvati uopste nemamo 

dusmanina kao sto je Srbin, pa s tom cinjenicom 

treba racunati od sada, pa dok 

bude i jednog Hrvata i jednog Srbina”. 

Potpisnik ovih redaka bio je u odboru za 

obelezavanje pola veka od prestanka “rada” 

jasenovackog sistema ustaskih logora genocida 

i herojskog jurisa u nebo jasenovackih 

logorasa i dok su se razne srpske delegacije 

dogovarale (i nikako da dogovore) oko datuma 

komemoracije nove ustase su napale 

Republiku Srpsku Krajinu i uz koristenje 

uniformi organizacije UN usli u Jasenovac. 

Tom prilikom, pored ostalih, ubijen je Milos 

Bachic - Crni, jedan od potomaka vlasnika 

zemljista na kome je centralni jasenovacki 

logor - Logor III - Ciglana. Kada su Srbi iz 

Republike Srpske Krajine napustali svoja 

vekovna ognjista tekuci predsednik tekuce 

hrvatske drzave je opet dosao do izrazaja sa 

svojim sarkazmom, kazavsi kako Srbi mogu 

poneti sa sobom samo zemlju na svojim 

opancima (!). Inace, da zalost bude veca, 

tekuci predsednik tekuce hrvatske drzave je 

srpski zet iz stradalnog banijskog sela Slabinje. 

Vise od pola ovog srpskog sela nestalo 

je u jasenovackim logorima. Ona manja 

polovica je opet uspela podici ovo selo 

na noge, ali danas je ono takoreci prazno. 

Pamtimo i njegovu izjavu kao poslednjeg 

predsednika Avnojevske Jugoslavije, kao je 

on zavrsio svoj posao - i da Jugoslavije vise 

nema ! 

Dakle, mrak je jos uvek na dnevnom 

redu. “Ko govori da je u svetlosti, a mrzi 

svoga brata, jos uvek je u tami” (Prva poslanica 

Jovanova, 2:9). A sta nama Srbima 

preostaje u ovim smutnim vremenima koja 

nikako da prominu!? U uslovima prave elementarne 

katastrofe, kada nas je vecina 

izvan svojih maticnih koordinata kolektivno 

pamcenje ce biti jedini lek, pravi put i svetlokaz, 

lelujavi plamicak svece u aktuelnoj 

olujnoj tmici.

Michigan Serbs Unite In Detroit! 

It is official! After only one meeting Michigan 

Serbs are on a united front to revitalize 

the Serbian Unity Congress Chapter in 

Detroit, and help their Serbian community 

throughout the Homeland and Diaspora! 

On a sunny April 9th, 2005, the 

Detroit Serbian community and Serbian students 

from the University of Michigan welcomed 

Dr. Jasmina Vujic, who is a Professor 

of Nuclear Engineering at the University of 

California, Berkely and the Vice President 

of the Serbian Unity Congress. 

Dr. Vujic delivered an important 

speech regarding the critical issues facing 

the Serbian community in the US and the 

Homeland. The speech covered U.S. policy 

towards our holy land of Kosovo and Metohija, 

preservation and promotion of our 

Kosovo heritage, and Homeland cooperation 

and Diaspora participation. Additionally, 

Dr. Vujic spoke about a new and exciting 

campaign that the SUC has launched 

known as “Know Your Congress”. 

The goal with this campaign is to 

get more Congressmen to join the Congressional 

Serbian Caucus, which currently 

includes 22 Members of Congress. It is 

during this process that Detroit Serbs can 

present the concerns of the community to 

their elected Representatives. However, 

this goal cannot be attained without volunteers 

of the local Serbian community. This is 

where the Michigan Serbs are rising to the 

challenge. 

Specific materials were prepared 

for the Detroit Serbs to take home with them 

to utilize. They were provided with the list 

of Representatives in the Southeast Michigan 

area, sample letters that they could immediately 

send out to their Representative, 

and a membership packet that provided an 

instruction sheet on how to present their 

case to their Congressman/woman. 

Dr. Vujic pointed out key phrases 

for our future success in Detroit. The first 

phrase is “Professionalism”. We need to be 

there, organize members, and effectively 

communicate. The second phrase is “Member 

Support”. Wide support of our efforts 

is essential both in numbers and finances. 

And the third and final phrase is “Volunteering”. 

Footwork done by members and 

supporters is vital. 

The Serbian community has never 

come together as a whole in this construc- 

tive manner and the Detroit Chapter is 

building the foundation of unity in its local 

metro area. 

Zlatko Erdeljan and myself, Violeta 

Grujovski have accepted the interim positions 

of the President and Secretary of the 

SUC Michigan Chapter. A “Kick Off” meeting 

is planned for sometime in May 2005 in 

which we will then elect Chapter Officers. 

During this short time I have had 

great pleasure with working with Zlatko. 

He and I are committed to be strong leaders 

and to help build confidence and unite this 

Michigan Chapter. It will take time but with 

everyone’s hard work and dedication it can 

be done! 

After our meeting ended, Zlatko 

and I packed our things into our cars and 

as I made my way home my thoughts went 

to Dr. Vujic’s presentation and our people. 

This year is a very important year for the 

Serbian Community throughout the world. 

No one will speak for us unless we do and 

no one will help us so we need to help ourselves 

and be united. 

I would love to believe that our famous 

slogan “Samo Sloga Srbina Spasava” 

actually mean something to each Serbian. 

They are words that should not be said or 

taken lightly. They are very powerful because 

it is a statement of truth. Without us 

being united and in agreement of the things 

that are important, which today is Kosovo- 

Metojhia, we lose a lot and we end up with 

nothing. 

Today the Michigan Serbs are uniting 

and we ask everyone to unite with us as 

we create one voice for the world to hear. 

Let us work together and present our case to 

our elected Representatives and reach the 

goal of 50 Members for our caucus by Vidovdan! 

We thank Dr. Vujic and the Washington 

Staff for all of their dedication, support, 

and guidance they have provided to 

Zlatko and I these past several weeks! The 

Michigan Chapter is looking forward to 

working with them and many other members 

throughout the Diaspora.

English studies program is involvement in 

Serbian society. We are trying to motivate 

our Serbian intelectuals in Austria to become 

interested in Serbian organizations 

and to help us by becoming members or increasing 

their involvement with the implementation 

of projects. 

We are planning similar projects 

for Belgrade, Podgorica and Banja Luka 

(next year). Vesti Frankfurt will be actively 

involved in both projects. 

These projects are well welcomed 

by all serbian organizations and the media. 

We have received the most compliments we 

have received from Vienna University Student 

Club, which consists of aproximately 

200 members. 

Serbian National Defense Initiate Most 

Needed Census Project 

April 14, 2005 

The Serbian Orthodox Church endorses 

this project and our North American Bishops 

gave it their blessings. If it will make 

you any more comfortable, you may submit 

completed forms to your parish priest who 

will forward them on to the census data collection 

center. 

Our census center will eliminate any duplications. 

The Serbia Ministry for the Diaspora 

also endorsed this action. The form is 

also published in the Serbian National Defense’s 

publication “Sloboda – Liberty” and 

the Serbian National Federation’s publication 

“SRBOBRAN” Please be assured that 

any data that you submit will not be used 

for any commercial purposes, sold to mailing 

list operators or similar. 

The sole purpose of this census is to establish 

the number of Serbian Americans in the 

USA and the ZIP codes of their residences.
