Dear Friends, Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Services’ journey of healing families and changing lives began on September 16, 1984, over 25 years ago. With each passing year, the number of individuals and families in need of our programs and services increased, and our commitment to them did so as well. From the first day we opened the shelter to the end of this past year over 11,000 victims walked through our front doors, 6,684 women and children sought shelter, and the 24-Hour Helpline had been answered over 177,000 times to assist someone on the other end seeking information and help. Over the past 25 years Christine Ann has provided the highest quality of programs and services and achieved positive outcomes. In 2009 we enhanced programming to meet the evolving needs of victims, organized hundreds of men to stand up and speak out against violence against women, assessed our future space needs, increased work place safety training and ensured that we have the financial stability to continue to be in the community now and well into the future. In addition, we have expanded the Safe and Secure training program to numerous businesses addressing domestic violence and its impact on the workplace. We are also focusing on the increase in teen dating violence and working in partnership with schools and other agencies to address this issue on a county-wide level. IN HER OWN WORDS: “We came with almost nothing but by midnight that night we felt more normal and slept soundly for the first time since he had been arrested…in so many ways, it is like having a really emotionally healthy family there to help you when you need it most.” As we reflect on the past 25 years, we will always honor the journey of the agency, the journey of survivors and the journey of a community. Together, we recognized domestic abuse as a community issue and took action to stop it. It was not a popular message but one that needed to be heard. It took a few concerned and dedicated citizens to begin the process but it has taken a whole community to help us achieve the impact we have today. We remain deeply grateful to all of our partners and supporters for their dedication to end abuse in the community. We look forward to continuing to work together to heal families and change lives.
