EmERgENcy ShELTER PRogRAm Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Services’ emergency shelter, the Christine Ann Center, provides immediate safety to individuals and families who might otherwise be homeless as a result of domestic abuse. The shelter offers safe and temporary housing in a welcoming and supportive environment - in addition to having their basic needs met, victims meet with advocates to discuss personal and safety options and receive emotional support. While in shelter, the agency also offers victims legal advocacy, support groups, education and referrals to community resources—all while they maintain their own living spaces, make their own meals and take care of family needs. The shelter also houses the agency’s 24-Hour Helpline, answered by advocates and trained volunteers to assist victims, and concerned friends and family member with information on domestic violence issues. The goal is to offer a safe, self-empowering environment for individuals and families victimized by domestic violence. The program offers comprehensive support services to meet the often complex needs of victims including individual options advocacy, safety planning, support groups, legal advocacy and referrals to community resources as well as other essential needs such as housing, financial assistance, child care, medical and mental health, parenting support, transitional living services, and employment and training programs. The goal of the program is to increase safety and to strengthen the self-sufficiency of victims caught in the cycle of abuse, moving them from victims to survivors. Christine Ann provides a safe environment in which they can manage their fears and feelings, and learn about and understand healthy relationships and what it means to be safe. Services include individual support sessions, safety planning, support groups, and community referrals. The teen advocate works primarily with teens that are in abusive and unhealthy dating relationships, providing advocacy that centers on healthy and safe relationships. The program also offers support for parents (or caretakers) through positive parenting skills, and connecting them to community resources. The overall goal of the program is to enhance the safety and quality of life for children and teens that have witnessed or experienced domestic violence. The A.T.A.M. program holds batterers accountable for their violent and abusive choices, teaching them to recognize how their abusive behavior affects their partners and children, and to practice alternatives to abusive behaviors. In addition to A.T.A.M., the program offers individual assessments of domestic violence perpetrators as well as a companion program for female offenders called Choices and Consequences. The overall goal of the program is to enhance the quality of life for domestic violence victims by changing the attitudes and behaviors of batterers through intervention and treatment. The program offers presentations and trainings to a variety of community groups, organizations, and businesses; it also targets students in grades K-12 within the schools, addressing characteristics of abusive as well as healthy relationships, and teaching youth healthy ways to handle conflict and anger. The goal of the program is two-fold: To increase awareness of domestic violence by educating the community on how to help victims and to ensure that all victims know where to go for help; and to provide proactive services to decrease the generational cycle of violence and reduce future incidences of violence in the community. The goal of the program is to mitigate these barriers and to help victims achieve safety and self-sufficiency. Services offered in Green Lake County include shelter options, support groups, 24-Hour Helpline support, children and teen programming, individual advocacy, safety planning, legal advocacy, and community education presentations and trainings. As advocates work with families in the community who are experiencing domestic violence, volunteers are busy greeting clients and donors, answering phones, and assisting with other office tasks. Many other volunteers are helping with shelter maintenance, repair and yard work. Additionally, volunteers provide support to Christine Ann’s children and teen advocates as they help youth understand and recover from the affects of abuse. Volunteers also serve in a variety of capacities to help plan and execute special events and activities, assisting the agency in raising critical revenue and awareness.
